In this paper, a study of two-photon and two-gluon decays in the context of p-wave heavy quarkonia is presented. Within the covariant light-front framework, the annihilation rates of scalar and tensor quarkonium states are derived. In the absence of free parameters in this case, the results for the charmonium decay widths are consistent with the experimental data. However, in comparison to other theoretical calculations, there are large discrepancies in our results regarding bottomonia.
In this article, we study the radiative transitions among the vector and scalar heavy quarkonium states with the covariant light-front quark model. In calculations, we observe that the radiative decay widths are sensitive to the constituent quark masses and the shape parameters of the wave-functions, and reproduce the experimental data with suitable parameters.
The bound--state problem for the pion as a quarkonium with the funnel (Coulomb--plus--linear) interaction is solved in a framework that combines the bilocal approach to mesons with the covariant generalization of the instantaneous--potential model. The potential interaction leads to dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry. However, the Coulomb potential leads to ultraviolet divergences that must be subtracted. A careful choice of the renormalization prescription is needed in order to get the correct chiral limit. The mass, the lepton decay constant of the pion, as well as the pion decay width in…
The light-front approach is a relativistic quark model and offers many insights to the internal structures of the hadronic bound states. In this study, we apply the covariant light-front approach to ground-state heavy quarkonium. The pesudoscalar and vector meson decay constants are discussed. We present a detailed study of two-photon annihilation P \to γγand magnetic dipole transition V \to P γprocesses. The numerical predictions of the light-front approach are consistent with the experimental data and those in other approaches. The relations of the light-front approach with the other methods…
In this Snowmass White Paper, we discuss physics opportunities involving heavy quarkonia at the intensity and energy frontiers of high energy physics. We focus primarily on two specific aspects of quarkonium physics for which significant advances can be expected from experiments at both frontiers. The first aspect is the spectroscopy of charmonium and bottomonium states above the open-heavy-flavor thresholds. Experiments at e^+ e^- colliders and at hadron colliders have discovered many new, unexpected quarkonium states in the last 10 years. Many of these states are surprisingly narrow, and som…
We study the charmonium 2S states $ψ'$ and $η_c'$, and the bottomonium 2S states $Υ'$ and $η_b'$, using the light-front quark model and the 2S state wave function of harmonic oscillator as the approximation of the 2S quarkonium wave function. The decay constants, transition form factors and masses of these mesons are calculated and compared with experimental data. Predictions of quantities such as Br$(ψ' \to γη_c')$ are made. The 2S wave function may help us learn more about the structure of these heavy quarkonia.
We study heavy quarkonium within the light-front Hamiltonian formalism. Our effective Hamiltonian is based on the holographic QCD confining potential and the one-gluon exchange interaction with a running coupling. The obtained spectra are compared with experimental measurements. We present a set of light-front wave functions, which exhibit rich structure and are consistent with the nonrelativistic picture. Finally, we use the wave functions to compute the charge and mass radii.
In this paper we study the relation between the light-front (infinite momentum) and rest-frame descriptions of quarkonia. While the former is more convenient for high-energy production, the latter is usually used for the evaluation of charmonium properties. In particular, we discuss the dynamics of a relativistically moving system with nonrelativistic internal motion and give relations between rest frame and light-front potentials used for the description of quarkonium states. We consider two approximations, first the small coupling regime, and next the nonperturbative small binding energy app…
In this work, we perform a detailed study of transition form factors for axial-vector meson production via the two-photon fusion process $γ^* γ^* \to 1^{++}$, with space-like virtual photons in the initial state and a $P$-wave axial-vector quarkonium in the final state. In this analysis, we employ the formalism of light-front quarkonium wave functions obtained from a solution of the Schrödinger equation for a selection of interquark potentials for $Q \bar Q$ interaction. We found the helicity structure and covariant decomposition of the matrix elements that can be generically applied for any $…
Two-Body Dirac equations of constraint dynamics provide a covariant framework to investigate the problem of highly relativistic quarks in meson bound states. This formalism eliminates automatically the problems of relative time and energy, leading to a covariant three dimensional formalism with the same number of degrees of freedom as appears in the corresponding nonrelativistic problem. It provides bound state wave equations with the simplicity of the nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation. Unlike other three-dimensional truncations of the Bethe-Salpeter equation, this covariant formalism has …
We analyze the uncertainties induced by different definitions of the momentum fraction $z$ in the application of gluon to heavy quarkonium fragmentation function. We numerically calculate the initial $g \to J / ψ$ fragmentation functions by using the non-covariant definitions of $z$ with finite gluon momentum and find that these fragmentation functions have strong dependence on the gluon momentum $\vec{k}$. As $| \vec{k} | \to \infty$, these fragmentation functions approach to the fragmentation function in the light-cone definition. Our numerical results show that large uncertainties remains w…
We study the heavy quarkonium within the basis light-front quantization approach. We implement the one-gluon exchange interaction and a confining potential inspired by light-front holography. We adopt the holographic light-front wavefunction (LFWF) as our basis function and solve the non-perturbative dynamics by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian matrix. We obtain the mass spectrum for charmonium and bottomonium. With the obtained LFWFs, we also compute the decay constants and the charge form factors for selected eigenstates. The results are compared with the experimental measurements and with othe…
Dimensional regularization is incompatible with the standard covariant projection methods that are used to calculate the short-distance coefficients in inclusive heavy quarkonium production and annihilation rates. A new method is developed that allows dimensional regularization to be used consistently to regularize the infrared and ultraviolet divergences that arise in these perturbative calculations. We illustrate the method by calculating the leading color-octet terms and the leading color-singlet terms in the gluon fragmentation functions for arbitrary quarkonium states. We resolve a discre…
We study charmonium and bottomonium as relativistic bound states in a light-front quantized Hamiltonian formalism. The effective Hamiltonian is based on light-front holography. We use a recently proposed longitudinal confinement to complete the soft-wall holographic potential for the heavy flavors. The spin structure is generated from the one-gluon exchange interaction with a running coupling. The adoption of asymptotic freedom improves the spectroscopy compared with previous light-front results. Within this model, we compute the mass spectroscopy, decay constants and the r.m.s. radii. We also…

We investigate the light quarkonium spectrum using a covariant Dyson-Schwinger-Bethe-Salpeter-equation approach to QCD. We discuss splittings among as well as orbital angular momentum properties of various states in detail and analyze common features of mass splittings with regard to properties of the effective interaction. In particular, we predict the mass of sbars exotic 1-+ states, and identify orbital angular momentum content in the excitations of the rho meson. Comparing our covariant model results, the rho and its second excitation being predominantly S-wave, the first excitation being …
We study the entropic destruction of heavy quarkonium in strongly coupled theories with an anisotropic scaling symmetry in time and spatial direction. We consider Lifshitz and hyperscaling violation theories which are covariant under a generalized Lifshitz scaling symmetry with the dynamical exponent $z$ and hyperscaling violation exponent $θ$. It is shown that the entropic force depends on the parameters of these theories. In particular, increasing $z$ decreases the entropic force thus reducing the quarkonium dissociation, while increasing $θ$ has opposite effect.
Based on the predictions of the relevant form factors from the covariant light-front quark model, we show the branching fractions for the $D (D_s) \to (P,\,S,\,V,\,A)\,\ellν_\ell$ ($\ell=e$ or $μ$) decays, where $P$ denotes the pseudoscalar meson, $S$ the scalar meson with a mass above 1 GeV, $V$ the vector meson and $A$ the axial-vector one. Comparison with the available experimental results are made, and we find an excellent agreement. The predictions for other decay modes can be tested in a charm factory, e.g., the BESIII detector. The future measurements will definitely further enrich our …
We present the calculation of O(as^2 aem) corrections to heavy-quarkonium total photoproduction cross-sections. Results are given for the colour-octet component of S and P waves. The calculation is performed using covariant projectors in dimensional regularization. A phenomenological study of the results, including a discussion of the high-energy behaviour of the cross sections, is presented. For gamma-p energies up to few hundred GeV the NLO corrections significantly reduce the scale dependence of the production rates relative to the Born-level results. Large small-x corrections arise at high…
Decay constants and form factors for parity-even (s-wave) and parity-odd (p-wave) mesons are studied within a covariant light-front approach. The three universal Isgur-Wise functions for heavy-to-heavy meson transitions are obtained.
We present a calculation of next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to total hadronic production cross sections and to light-hadron-decay rates of heavy quarkonium states. Both colour-singlet and colour-octet contributions are included. We discuss in detail the use of covariant projectors in dimensional regularization, the structure of soft-gluon emission and the overall finiteness of radiative corrections. We compare our approach with the NLO version of the threshold-expansion technique recently introduced by Braaten and Chen. Most of the results presented here are new. Others represent t…
In this paper, we investigate the tensor form factors of $P\to P,\,S,\,V$ and $A$ transitions within the standard light-front (SLF) and the covariant light-front (CLF) quark models (QMs). The self-consistency and Lorentz covariance of CLF QM are analyzed via these quantities, and the effects of zero-mode are discussed. For the $P\to V$ and $A$ transitions, besides the inconsistence between the results extracted via longitudinal and transverse polarization states, which is caused by the residual $ω$-dependent spurious contributions, we find and analyze a "new" self-consistence problem of the tr…
In an explicitly covariant light-front formalism, we analyze transition form factors between pseudoscalar and scalar mesons. Application is performed in case of the $B \to f_0(980)$ transition in the full available transfer momentum range $q^2$.
We discuss the light-front zero-mode issue in the light-front quark model prediction of the twist-3 distribution amplitude of a pseudoscalar meson from the perspective of the vacuum fluctuation consistent with the chiral symmetry of QCD.
We investigate the momentum transfer dependence of differential cross sections $dσ/dt$ in diffractive electroproduction of heavy quarkonia on proton targets. Model predictions for $dσ/dt$ within the light-front QCD dipole formalism are based on a realistic model for a proper correlation between the impact parameter $\vec b$ of a collision and color dipole orientation $\vec r$. We demonstrate a significance of $\vec b-\vec r$ correlation by comparing with a standard simplification $\vec{b}\parallel\vec{r}$, frequently used in the literature.
We calculate the predicted width for the radiative decay of a $1^{++}$ heavy meson via the channel $1^{++} \to 1^{--} +γ$ in the covariant light-front quark model. Specifically, we compute the decay widths for $χ_{c1}(1P) \to J/ψ+ γ$ and $χ_{b1}(nP) \to Υ(n'S) + γ$. The results are compared with experimental data and with predictions from calculations based on nonrelativistic models and their extensions to include relativistic effects.
The hadronic decays of quarkonium and the B meson inclusive decay into J/Psi + X, if treated in the zero-binding approximation, suggest a value of the strong coupling constant much smaller than the value implied in the standard model by running from measurements at the Z. Thus, assuming the standard model is correct in the low energy region, there must be very substantial relativistic binding corrections to these processes. We discuss the wave function factor appearing in covariant treatments of quarkonium production and decay processes with special attention to the way in which the spin of th…

In this paper we discuss the relation between the standard covariant quantum field theory and light-front field theory. We define covariant theory by its Feynman diagrams, whereas light-front field theory is defined in terms of light-cone time-ordered diagrams. A general algorithm is proposed that produces the latter from any Feynman diagram. The procedure is illustrated in several cases. Technical problems that occur in the light-front formulation and have no counterpart in the covariant formulation are identified and solved.
Exclusive radiative B decays, B to K* gamma, K_1(1270) gamma, K_1(1400) gamma and K*_2(1430) gamma, are studied in the framework of a covariant light-front quark model. The tensor form factor T_1(q^2) at q^2=0, which is relevant to the decay B to K* gamma, is found to be 0.24, substantially smaller than what expected from the conventional light-front model or light-cone sum rules. Taking into account the sizable next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections, the calculated branching ratio of B to K* gamma agrees with experiment, while most of the existing models predict too large B to K* gamma compa…
Hindered magnetic dipole transitions $Υ(nS)\to γη_b(n'S)$ are studied in the covariant light-front approach. Compared with the allowed magnetic dipole transitions, we find that results for hindered magnetic dipole transitions are sensitive to heavy quark mass and shape parameters of the light-front wave functions. It is possible to tune the parameters so that the predictions of branching fractions of $Υ(2S,3S)\toγη_b$ are consistent with the recent experimental data, but the relevant decay constant of $η_b$ is much smaller than that of $Υ(1S)$. We also generalize the investigation to the charm…
Light-front perturbation theory has been proposed as an alternative to covariant perturbation theory. Light-front perturbation theory is only acceptable if it produces invariant S-matrix elements. Doubts have been raised concerning the equivalence of light-front and covariant perturbation theory. One of the obstacles to a rigorous proof of equivalence is the occurrence of longitudinal divergences not present in covariant perturbation theory. We show in the case of the Yukawa model of fermions interacting with scalar bosons at the one-loop level how to deal with the longitudinal divergences. In…
The rho-meson eletromagnetic form factors are calculated, both in covariant and light-front framework with constituintes quarks. The effect of the breakdown rotational symmetry for the one-body current operador in the null-plane is investigate by comparing calculations within ligth-front and covariant approaches.
The light-front (LF) canonical quantization of quantum chromodynamics in covariant gauge is discussed. The Dirac procedure is used to eliminate the constraints in the gauge-fixed front form theory quantum action and to construct the LF Hamiltonian formulation. The physical degrees of freedom emerge naturally. The propagator of the dynamical $ψ_+$ part of the free fermionic propagator in the LF quantized field theory is shown to be causal and not to contain instantaneous terms. Since the relevant propagators in the covariant gauge formulation are causal, rotational invariance---including the Co…
We study the decay constants and form factors of the ground-state s-wave and low-lying p-wave mesons within a covariant light-front approach. Numerical results of the form factors for transitions between a heavy pseudoscalar meson and an s-wave or p-wave meson and their momentum dependence are presented in detail. In particular, form factors for heavy-to-light and B to D** transitions, where D** denotes generically a p-wave charmed meson, are compared with other model calculations. The experimental measurements of the decays B^- to D** pi^- and B to D D**_s are employed to test the decay const…
Light-Front Field Theory (LFFT) is a good candidate to describe bound states. In LFFT covariance is non-manifest. Burkardt and Langnau claim that, even for scattering amplitudes, rotational invariance is broken. We will take a different path of obtaining rules for light-front time-ordered diagrams. Covariance depends on the choice of a regulator $α$. We need to apply some regularisation scheme to render physical amplitudes finite. This is done by applying minus regularisation. In this process all ambiguities related to the regulator $α$ are removed. Therefore there is equivalence between the p…
We discuss the equivalence between light-front time-ordered-perturbation theory and covariant quantum field theory in light-front quantization, in the case of quantum electrodynamics at one-loop level. In particular, we review the one-loop calculation of the vertex correction, fermion self-energy and vacuum polarization. We apply the procedure of integration by residue over the light-front energy in the loop to show how the perturbative expansion in covariant terms can be reduced to a sum of propagating and instantaneous diagrams of light-front time-ordered perturbation theory. The detailed pr…
This work is the first check of gauge invariance for nonperturbative calculations in light-front QED. To quantize QED in an arbitrary covariant gauge, we use a light-front analog of the equal-time Stueckelberg quantization. Combined with a Pauli-Villars regularization, where massive, negative-metric photons and fermions are included in the Lagrangian, we are then able to construct the light-front QED Hamiltonian and the associated mass eigenvalue problem in a Fock-space representation. The formalism is applied to the dressed-electron state, with a Fock-space truncation to include at most one p…
We study the decay constants and form factors of the ground-state s-wave and low-lying p-wave mesons within a covariant light-front approach. Numerical results of the B to D** transition form factors, where D** denotes generically a p-wave charmed meson, are compared with other model calculations. Predictions on the decay rates for Bbar to D** pi, D** rho, Dbar**_s D* by using these decay constants and form factors are in agreement with the experimental data. The universal Isgur-Wise functions, xi, tau_{1/2}, tau_{3/2} are obtained and are used to test the Bjorken and Uraltsev sum rules.
In this paper we construct a covariant light-front model of heavy mesons within the framework of heavy quark effective theory (HQET). The covariant model consists of the light-front heavy meson bound states constructed in the heavy quark limit with heavy quark symmetry and heavy quark effective theory as its basis. Within this model, the Isgur-Wise function and decay constants in the infinite quark mass limit can be evaluated in a very simple and the most general way. The results are ensured to be consistent with heavy quark symmetry. From the heavy-quark-limit bound states, we can further dev…
We revisit the calculation of the width for the radiative decay of a $1^{+-}$ heavy $Q \bar Q$ meson via the channel $1^{+-} \to 0^{-+} +γ$ in the covariant light-front quark model. We carry out the reduction of the light-front amplitude in the non-relativistic limit, explicitly computing the leading and next-to-leading order relativistic corrections. This shows the consistency of the light-front approach with the non-relativistic formula for this electric dipole transition. Furthermore, the theoretical uncertainty in the predicted width is studied as a function of the inputs for the heavy qua…
Although the meson decay amplitude described by a two-point function may be regarded as one of the simplest possible physical observable, it is interesting that this apparently simple amplitude bears abundant fundamental informations on QCD vacuum dynamics and chiral symmetry. The light-front zero-mode issue of the vector meson decay constant $f_V$ is in this respect highly non-trivial and deserves careful analyses. We discuss the zero-mode issue in the light-front quark model (LFQM) prediction of $f_V$ from the perspective of the vacuum fluctuation consistent with the chiral symmetry of QCD. …
The light-front dynamics is an efficient approach to study of field theory and of relativistic composite systems (nuclei at relativistic relative nucleon momenta, hadrons in the quark models). The explicitly covariant version of this approach is briefly reviewed and illustrated by some applications.
In the covariant light-front quark model, we investigate the $B_c\to h_c, χ_{c0,1,2}$ form factors. The form factors are evaluated in space-like kinematic region and are recasted to the physical region by adopting the exponential parametrization. We also study the semileptonic $B_c$ decays and find that branching fractions for the $B_c\to (h_c,χ_{c0,1,2})l\barν(l=e,μ)$ decays have the order $10^{-3}$ while branching fractions for $B_c\to (h_c,χ_{c0,1,2})τ\barν_τ$ are suppressed by one order. These predictions will be tested at the forthcoming hadron colliders.
We reanalyze the $B\to M$ tensor form factors in a covariant light-front quark model, where $M$ represents a vector meson $V$, an axial-vector meson $A$, or a tensor meson $T$. The treatment of masses and mixing angles in the $K_{1A,1B}$ systems is improved, where $K_{1A}$ and $K_{1B}$ are the $^3P_1$ and $^1P_1$ states of the axial-vector meson $K_1$, respectively. Rates of $B\to Mγ$ decays are then calculated using the QCD factorization approach. The updated $B\to K^*γ$, $B\to K_1(1270)γ$, $K_1(1400)γ$ and $K_2γ$ rates agree with the data. The $K_1(1270)$--$K_1(1400)$ mixing angle is found t…
The generalized parton distributions of the pion are studied within different light-front approaches for the quark-hadron and quark-photon vertices, exploring different kinematical regions in both the valence and non-valence sector. Moments of the generalized parton distributions which enter the definition of generalized form factors are also compared with recent lattice calculations.
We study the implications of Lorentz symmetry for hadronic structure by formulating a manifestly covariant constituent quark model and find full covariance for any Lorentz transformation requires utilizing a variable quantization surface. Even though time-reversal invariance mandates a unique orientation for the surface's direction, we investigated alternative choices and find small numerical sensitivity to different directions. We also calculate the static properties of the low lying pseudoscalar mesons and compare results with existing noncovariant calculations. We conclude that there is a l…
The $D$-wave admixture in quarkonium wave functions is acquired from the photonlike structure of $V\to Q\bar Q$ transition in the light-front frame widely used in the literature. Such a $D$-wave ballast is not justified by any nonrelativistic model for $Q-\bar Q$ interaction potential and leads to falsified predictions for the cross sections in heavy quarkonium production in ultra-peripheral nuclear collisions. We analyze this negative role of $D$-wave contribution by comparing with our previous studies based on a simple non-photon-like "$S$-wave-only" $V\to Q\bar Q$ transition in the $Q\bar Q…
The structure of the pion wave function in the relativistic constituent quark model is investigated in the explicitly covariant formulation of light-front dynamics. We calculate the two relativistic components of the pion wave function in a simple one-gluon exchange model and investigate various physical observables: decay constant, charge radius, electromagnetic and transition form factors. We discuss the influence of the full relativistic structure of the pion wave function for an overall good description of all these observables, including both low and high momentum scales.
We consider the three fundamental one loop Feynman diagrams of QED viz. vertex correction, fermion self-energy and vacuum polarization in the light-front gauge and discuss the equivalence of their standard covariant expressions with the light-front expressions obtained using light-cone time-ordered Hamiltonian perturbation theory. Although this issue has been considered by us and others previously, our emphasis in this article is on addressing the ambiguity regarding the correct form of the gauge boson propagator to be used in the light-front gauge. We generalize our earlier results and show, …
$B\to (π, η, η')$ transition form factors are investigated in the covariant light-front approach. With theoretical uncertainties, we find that $B\to (π, η, η')$ form factors at $q^2=0$ are $f^{(π, η, η')}_{+}(0)=(0.245^{+0.000}_{-0.001}\pm 0.011, 0.220 \pm 0.009\pm0.009, 0.180\pm 0.008^{+0.008}_{-0.007})$ for vector current and $f^{(π, η, η')}_{T}(0)=(0.239^{+0.002+0.020}_{-0.003-0.018}, 0.211\pm 0.009^{+0.017}_{-0.015}, 0.173\pm 0.007^{+0.014}_{-0.013})$ for tensor current, respectively. With the obtained $q^2$-dependent $f^π_{+}(q^2)$ and observed branching ratio (BR) for $\bar B_d\to π^+ \e…
In this paper, a study of light-cone distribution amplitudes for p-wave heavy quarkonium states are presented. Within the light-front framework, the leading twist light-cone distribution amplitudes, and their relevant decay constants, have some simple relations. These relations can be further simplified when the non-relativistic limit and the wave function as a function of relative momentum |\vecκ| are taken into consideration. In addition, the κ_\perp integrations in the equations of LCDAs and ξ-moments can be completed analytically when the Gaussian-type wave function is considered. After fi…
Here we begin important tests of the relativistic sixteen component wave function solutions obtained in …
We revisit the proof of equivalence of one loop expressions for fermion self-energy and vertex correction in light-front QED and Covariant QED at the Feynman diagram level and generalize, to all components, the proof of equivalence for the one loop vertex correction diagram which was presented earlier by us only for the $+$ component of $Λ^μ$. We demonstrate, in the general case also, that the equivalence cannot be established without the third term in the three-term photon propagator in light cone gauge.
We investigate the model dependence of no-helicity flip generalized parton distribution of the pion upon different approaches for the quark-hadron and quark-photon vertexes, in the spacelike region. In order to obtain information on contributions from both the valence and non-valence regions, we compare results for spacelike momentum transfers obtained from i) an analytic covariant model with a bare quark-photon vertex, ii) a Light-front approach with a quark-photon vertex dressed through a microscopic vector-meson model and iii) a Light-front approach based on the Relativistic Hamiltonian Dyn…
We reanalyzed nonleptonic charmless two-body B decays involving tensor mesons in final state motivated by the disagreement between current experimental information and theoretical predictions obtained in ISGW2 model for some $\mathcal{B}(B \to P(V)T)$ (where $P$, $V$ and $T$ denote a pseudoscalar, a vector and a tensor meson, respectively). We have calculated branching ratios of charmless $B \to PT$ and $B\to VT$ modes, using $B \to T$ form factors obtained in the covariant light-front (CLF) approach and the full effective Hamiltonian. We have considered the $η-η^{\prime}$ two-mixing angle for…
