Through Variational Monte Carlo simulation we show the d-wave RVB pairing in the Heisenberg model on triangular lattice can be better described in terms of a two component order parameter. The fully gapped chiral d-wave RVB state, which is predicted by the mean field theory to be the unique minimum of variational energy in the two dimensional representation space of d-wave pairing, is found to be actually a local maximum and the true minimum of energy is reached by the non-chiral $d_{xy}$ state with line nodes. We also find that the usual Gutzwiller approximation, which enjoys great success for the square lattice system, fails badly on the triangular lattice as a result of the geometric frustration inherent of the system. An improved version of the Gutzwiiler approximation is proposed and is found to give a much better results than the usual one.
The topological entanglement entropy(TEE) of Gutzwiller projected RVB state is studied with Monte Carlo simulation. New tricks are proposed to improve the convergence of TEE, which enable us to show that the spin liquid state studied in Ref.\cite{Vishwanath} actually does not support $Z_{2}$ topological order, a conclusion that is consistent with the information drawn from the inspection of the topological degeneracy on the same state. We find both a long ranged RVB amplitude and an approximate Marshall sign structure are at the origin of the suppression of vison gap in this spin liquid state.…
The spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice is considered in the mean-field RVB approximation. The analytical estimates for the critical temperatures of the longitudinal s-RVB state (the upper one) and the 2D s-RVB state (the lower one) are obtained which fairly agree with the results of the previous numerical studies on this system. Analytical formulae for the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic contribution to the specific heat capacity in the longitudinal s-RVB state are obtained which fairly reproduce the results of the numerical experiment concerning these phys…
The self-consistency equations for the independent order parameters as well as the free energy expression for the mean-field RVB model of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian on the anisotropic triangular lattice is considered in the quasi-one-dimensional approximation. The solutions of the self-consistency equations in the zero-temperature limit are in fair agreement with the previous numerical analysis of the same model by other authors. In particular, the transition from the ungapped 1D-RVB state to the gapped 2D-RVB state occurs at an arbitrarily weak transversal exchange ($J_{2}\rightarrow…
Gutzwiller-projected BCS wave function or the resonating-valence-bond (RVB) state in the 2D extended t-J model is investigated by using the variational Monte Carlo technique. We show that the results of ground-state energy and excitation spectra calculated in the grand-canonical scheme allowing particle number to fluctuate are essentially the same as previous results obtained by fixing the number of particle in the canonical scheme if the grand thermodynamic potential is used for minimization. To account for the effect of Gutzwiller projection, a fugacity factor proposed by Laughlin and Anders…
We study the ground state phase diagram of the bilayer Heisenberg model on square lattice with a Bosonic RVB wave function. The wave function has the form of a Gutzwiller projected Schwinger Boson mean field ground state and involves two variational parameters. We find the wave function provides an accurate description of the system on both sides of the quantum phase transition. Especially, through the analysis of the spin structure factor, ground state fidelity susceptibility and the Binder moment ratio $Q_{2}$, a continuous transition from the antiferromagnetic ordered state to the quantum d…

We show the chiral d-wave RVB state on honeycomb lattice stands as a natural generalization of the staggered flux phase on square lattice. Although the state is generated from a time reversal symmetry broken mean field ansatz, it actually represents a fully symmetric spin liquid state with a positive definite wave function in the sense of Marshall sign rule for unfrustrated antiferromagnets. The evolution of the state with the parameter $Δ/χ$ follows exactly the same manner as that of the staggered flux phase on square lattice. The critical pairing strength corresponding to the $π$-flux phase …
We introduce a Monte Carlo scheme based on sampling of Pfaffians to investigate Anderson's resonating-valence-bond (RVB) spin liquid wave function on the kagome and the triangular lattice. This eliminates a sign problem that prevents utilization of the valence bond basis in Monte Carlo studies for non-bipartite lattices. Studying lattice sizes of up to 600 sites, we calculate singlet-singlet and spin-spin correlations, and demonstrate how the lattice symmetry is restored within each topological sector as the system size is increased. Our findings are consistent with the expectation that the ne…
With extensive variational Monte Carlo simulation, we show that the uniform resonating valence bond state(U-RVB) on square lattice is actually antiferromagnetic long range ordered. The ordered moment is estimated to be $m\approx 0.17$. Finite size scaling analysis on lattice up to lattice size of $50\times 50$ shows that the spin structure factor at the antiferromagnetic ordering wave vector follows perfectly the $\mathrm{S}_{\mathrm{q}=(π,π)} \simeq S_{0}+α(1/L)^{5/4}$ behavior, where $L$ is linear scale of the lattice. Such a behavior is quite unexpected from the slave Boson mean field treat…
In this paper, we explore the relationship between strong spin-orbit coupling and spin liquid physics. We study a very general model on the triangular lattice where spin-orbit coupling leads to the presence of highly anisotropic interactions. We use variational Monte Carlo to study both $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid states and ordered ones, via the Gutzwiller projected fermion construction. We thereby obtain the ground state phase diagram in this phase space. We furthermore consider effects beyond the Gutzwiller wavefunctions for the spinon Fermi surface quantum spin liquid, which are of particul…

We study the energetics of Gutzwiller projected BCS states of various symmetries for the triangular lattice antiferromagnet with a four particle ring exchange using variational Monte Carlo methods. In a range of parameters the energetically favored state is found to be a projected $d_{x^2-y^2}$ paired state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry. We show that the properties of this nematic or orientationally ordered paired spin liquid state as a function of temperature and pressure can account for many of the experiments on organic materials. We also study the ring-exchange model with ferrom…
Superconducting Pairing Symmetries in Anisotropic Triangular Quantum Antiferromagnets
We investigate the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice with breathing anisotropy (i.e. with weak and strong triangular units), constructing an improved simplex Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) ansatz by successive applications (up to three times) of local quantum gates which implement a filtering operation on the bare nearest-neighbor RVB state. The resulting Projected Entangled Pair State involves a small number of variational parameters (only one at each level of application) and preserves full lattice and spin-rotation symmetries. Despite its simple analytic form, the sim…
Recent numerical simulations find a possible chiral spin liquid state in the intermediate coupling regime of the triangular lattice Hubbard model. Here we provide a simple picture for its origin in terms of a Bosonic RVB description. More specifically, we show that such a chiral spin liquid state can be understood as a quantum disordered tetrahedral spin state stabilized by the four spin ring exchange coupling, which suppresses the order-by-disorder effect toward a stripy spin state. Such a chiral spin liquid state features a spin Berry phase of $\fracπ{2}$ per triangle. However, we show that …
We study a spin-1/2 system with Heisenberg plus ring exchanges on a four-leg triangular ladder using the density matrix renormalization group and Gutzwiller variational wave functions. Near an isotropic lattice regime, for moderate to large ring exchanges we find a spin Bose-metal phase with a spinon Fermi sea consisting of three partially filled bands. Going away from the triangular towards the square lattice regime, we find a staggered dimer phase with dimers in the transverse direction, while for small ring exchanges the system is in a featureless rung phase. We also discuss parent states a…
We show that the spin liquid phase of the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice can be described by a pure spin model. This is based on a high-order strong coupling expansion (up to order 12) using perturbative continuous unitary transformations. The resulting spin model is consistent with a transition from three-sublattice long-range magnetic order to an insulating spin liquid phase, and with a jump of the double occupancy at the transition. Exact diagonalizations of both models show that the effective spin model is quantitatively accurate well into the spin liquid phase, and a …
Understanding the nature of the excitation spectrum in quantum spin liquids is of fundamental importance, in particular for the experimental detection of candidate materials. However, current theoretical and numerical techniques have limited capabilities, especially in obtaining the dynamical structure factor, which gives a crucial characterization of the ultimate nature of the quantum state and may be directly assessed by inelastic neutron scattering. In this work, we investigate the low-energy properties of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice, including both nearest-neighb…
We find that the best RVB state of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model(spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ KAFH) is described by a $Z_{2}$ gapped mean field ansatz, which hosts a mean field spinon dispersion very different from that of the widely studied $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid state. However, we find that the physical spin fluctuation spectrum calculated from the Gutzwiller projected RPA(GRPA) theory above such an RVB state is actually gapless and is almost identical to that above the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid state. We find that such a peculiar behavior can be attributed to the u…
We study different ways of symmetry fractionalization in $Z_{2}$ spin liquids on the triangular lattice. Our classification can be used to identify the symmetry fractionalization in the $Z_{2}$ spin liquid reported in recent density-matrix-renormalization-group simulations for $J_{1}-J_{2}$ spin model on the triangular lattice. We find 64 types of symmetry enriched $Z_{2}$ spin liquid states on triangular lattice. Besides 8 states constructed in Schwinger-boson parton wavefunctions, 12 more states can be realized in Abrikosov-fermion parton construction. Within a larger gauge group than SU(2),…
The simplest spin-orbital model can host a nematic spin-orbital liquid state on the triangular lattice. We provide clear evidence that the ground state of the SU(4) Kugel-Khomskii model on the triangular lattice can be well described by a "single" Gutzwiller projected wave function with an emergent parton Fermi surface, despite it exhibits strong finite-size effect in quasi-one-dimensional cylinders. The finite-size effect can be resolved by the fact that the parton Fermi surface consists of open orbits in the reciprocal space. Thereby, a stripy liquid state is expected in the two-dimensional …
Using tensor network states to unravel the physics of quantum spin liquids in minimal, yet generic microscopic spin or electronic models remains notoriously challenging. A prominent open question concerns the nature of the insulating ground state of two-dimensional half-filled Hubbard-type models on the triangular lattice in the vicinity of the Mott metal-insulator transition, a regime which can be approximated microscopically by a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model supplemented with additional "ring-exchange" interactions. Using a novel and efficient state preparation technique whereby we initialize f…
Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in 1986 by Bednorz and Mueller, great efforts have been devoted to finding out how and why it works. From the d-wave symmetry of the order parameter, the importance of antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and the presence of a mysterious pseudogap phase close to the Mott state, one can conclude that high-Tc superconductors are clearly distinguishable from the well-understood BCS superconductors. The d-wave superconducting state can be understood through a Gutzwiller-type projected BCS wave-function. In this review article, we revisit the Hub…
We study the spin-$1$ model in a triangular lattice in presence of a uniaxial anisotropy field using a Cluster Mean-Field approach (CMF). The interplay between antiferromagnetic exchange, lattice geometry and anisotropy forces Gutzwiller mean-field approaches to fail in a certain region of the phase diagram. There, the CMF yields two supersolid (SS) phases compatible with those present in the spin-$1/2$ XXZ model onto which the spin-$1$ system maps. Between these two SS phases, the three-sublattice order is broken and the results of the CMF depend heavily on the geometry and size of the cluste…
Impurities in triangular lattice spin 1/2 antiferromagnet
By using Gutzwiller projected fermionic wave functions and variational Monte Carlo technique, we study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model with the first-neighbor ($J_1$), second-neighbor ($J_2$), and additional scalar chiral interaction $J_χ{\bf S}_i \cdot ({\bf S}_j \times {\bf S}_k)$ on the triangular lattice. In the non-magnetic phase of the $J_1-J_2$ triangular model with $0.08 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.16$, recent density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. We find that the Schwinger Boson mean field theory(SBMFT) supplemented with Gutzwiller projection provides an exceedingly accurate description for the ground state of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model(spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ TLHAF). However, we find the SBMFT fails even qualitatively in the description of the dynamical behavior of the system. In particular, the SBMFT fails to predict the Goldstone mode in the magnetic ordered phase. We show that the coherent peak in the two-spinon continuum in the presence of spinon condensate should not be interpreted as …
On the triangular and kagome lattices, short-ranged resonating valence bond (RVB) wave functions can be sampled without the sign problem using a recently-developed Pfaffian Monte Carlo scheme. In this paper, we study the Renyi entanglement entropy in these wave functions using a replica-trick method. Using various spatial bipartitions, including the Levin-Wen construction, our finite-size scaled Renyi entropy gives a topological contribution consistent with $γ= \text{ln}(2)$, as expected for a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid. We prove that the mutual statistics are consistent with …
Although it is well accepted that the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet(TLHAF) has a long range ordered ground state, a thorough understanding of its spin dynamics is still missing. While the linear spin wave theory(LSWT) predicts three branches of magnon mode in the magnetic Brillouin zone(MBZ), the 1/S expansion at the next order is found to break down in a large portion of the MBZ centered around the M point, leaving the fate of the magnon modes there undecided. Recent neutron scattering measurement on Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$, an ideal realization of the spin-$\fr…
In this paper, we do a complete classification of valence-bond crystals (VBCs) on the kagome lattice based on general arguments of symmetry only and thus identify many new VBCs for different unit cell sizes. For the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet, we study the relative energetics of competing gapless spin liquids (SLs) and VBC phases within the class of Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions using variational Monte Carlo techniques, hence implementing exactly the constraint of one fermion per site. By using a state-of-the-art optimization method, we conclusively show that the U(1) …
