In order to understand thermodynamical properties of N D-branes with chemical potentials associated with R-symmetry charges, we study a one dimensional large N gauge theory (bosonic BFSS type model) as a first step. This model is obtained through a dimensional reduction of a 1+D dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theory and we use a 1/D expansion to investigate the phase structure. We find three phases in the μ-T plane. We also show that all the adjoint scalars condense at large D and obtain a mass dynamically. This dynamical mass protects our model from the usual perturbative instability of massless scalars in a non-zero chemical potential. We find that the system is at least meta-stable for arbitrary large values of the chemical potentials in D \to \infty limit. We also explore the existence of similar condensation in higher dimensional gauge theories in a high temperature limit. In 2 and 3 dimensions, the condensation always happens as in one dimensional case. On the other hand, if the dimension is higher than 4, there is a critical chemical potential and the condensation happens only if the chemical potentials are below it.
Monte Carlo simulations of finite density systems are often plagued by the complex action problem. We point out that there exists certain non-commutativity in the zero chemical potential limit and the thermodynamic limit when one tries to study such systems by reweighting techniques. This is demonstrated by explicit calculations in a Random Matrix Theory, which is thought to be a simple qualitative model for finite density QCD. The factorization method allows us to understand how the non-commutativity, which appears at the intermediate steps, cancels in the end results for physical observables…
We present a derivation of an exact high temperature expansion for a one-loop thermodynamic potential $Ω(\tildeμ)$ with complex chemical potential $\tildeμ$. The result is given in terms of a single sum the coefficients of which are analytical functions of $\tildeμ$ consisting of polynomials and polygamma functions, decoupled from the physical expansion parameter $βm$. The analytic structure of the coefficients permits us to explicitly calculate the thermodynamic potential for the imaginary chemical potential and analytically continue the domain to the complex $\tildeμ$ plane. Furthermore, our…
The thermodynamic Euler equation for high-energy states of large-$N$ gauge theories is derived from the dependence of the extensive quantities on the number of colors $N$. This Euler equation relates the energy of the state to the temperature, entropy, number of degrees of freedom and its chemical potential, but not to the volume or pressure. In the context of the gauge/gravity duality we show that the Euler equation is dual to the generalized Smarr formula for black holes in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. We also match the fundamental variational equation of thermodynamics …
We discuss an effective Polyakov loop model for QCD thermodynamics with a chemical potential. Using high temperature expansion techniques the partition sum is mapped exactly onto the partition sum of a flux model. In the flux representation the complex action problem is resolved and a simulation with worm-type algorithms becomes possible also at finite chemical potential.
We study the thermodynamics of soft wall model in AdS/QCD framework. The low temperature phase of QCD is described by thermal AdS and high temperature phase by AdS Black hole solution of five dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant. The chemical potential is introduced via the solution of U(1) vector field in the bulk. The difference of action densities in two phases is studied and the results are compared with hard wall model. The quark number susceptibility is also calculated in both the models.
We propose a new $q$-series formula for a character of parafermion conformal field theories associated to arbitrary non-twisted affine Lie algebra $\widehat{g}$. We show its natural origin from a thermodynamic Bethe ansatz analysis including chemical potentials.
We study a series of $N\!=\!1$ supersymmetric integrable particle theories in $d=1+1$ dimensions. These theories are represented as integrable perturbations of specific $N\!=\!1$ superconformal field theories. Starting from the conjectured $S$-matrices for these theories, we develop the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA), where we use that the 2-particle $S$-matrices satisfy a free fermion condition. Our analysis proves a conjecture by E.~Melzer, who proposed that these $N\!=\!1$ supersymmetric TBA systems are ``folded'' versions of $N\!=\!2$ supersymmetric TBA systems that were first studied by…
We present Monte Carlo results for the thermodynamics of pure SU(N) gauge theories with $N=2,...,6$ in 2+1 dimensions. We focus on the confined phase region $T<T_c$ and study thermodynamics variables such as the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, pressure, energy and entropy density using the integral method. We also investigate scaling properties with $N$ of the different observables. We compare our results with a gas of free glueballs and the bosonic string predictions for the Hagedorn spectrum.
We study the thermodynamics of the two flavor massless Schwinger model on a torus at a finite chemical potential. We show that thermodynamic quantities only depend on the isospin chemical potential and there are marked deviations from a free fermion theory.
We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a novel class of gauge-Yukawa theories that have recently been shown to be completely asymptotically safe, because their short-distance behaviour is determined by the presence of an interacting fixed point. Not only do all the coupling constants freeze at a constant and calculable value in the ultraviolet, their values can even be made arbitrarily small for an appropriate choice of the ratio $N_c/N_f$ of fermion colours and flavours in the Veneziano limit. Thus, a perturbative treatment can be justified. We compute the pressure, entropy density, a…
We present a general procedure to construct the first law of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon and illustrate its validity by examining it in some extended gravity theories. Applying this procedure, we can describe the thermodynamics on the apparent horizon in Randall-Sundrum braneworld imbedded in a nontrivial bulk. We discuss the mass-like function which was used to link Friedmann equation to the first law of thermodynamics and obtain its special case which gives the generalized Misner-Sharp mass in Lovelock gravity.
We review thermodynamic properties of modified gravity theories such as $F(R)$ gravity and $f(T)$ gravity, where $R$ is the scalar curvature and $T$ is the torsion scalar in teleparallelism. In particular, we explore the equivalence between the equations of motion for modified gravity theories and the Clausius relation in thermodynamics. In addition, thermodynamics of the cosmological apparent horizon is investigated in $f(T)$ gravity. We show both equilibrium and non-equilibrium descriptions of thermodynamics. It is demonstrated that the second law of thermodynamics in the universe can be met…
We study the thermodynamics of the 2+1 dimensional Gross-Neveu model in the presence of a chemical potential by introducing a representation for the canonical partition function which encodes both real and imaginary chemical potential cases. It is pointed out that the latter case probes the thermodynamics of the possible anyon-like excitations in the spectrum. It is also intimately connected to the breaking of the discrete Z-symmetry of a U(1) gauge theory coupled to the Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature, which we interpret as signaling anyon deconfinement. Finally, the chiral properties…
We discuss general spinning p-branes of string and M-theory and use their thermodynamics along with the correspondence between near-horizon brane solutions and field theories with 16 supercharges to describe the thermodynamic behavior of these theories in the presence of voltages under the R-symmetry. The thermodynamics is used to provide two pieces of evidence in favor of a smooth interpolation function between the free energy at weak and strong coupling of the field theory. (i) A computation of the boundaries of stability shows that for the D2, D3, D4, M2 and M5-branes the critical values of…
We develop the thermodynamics of field theories characterized by non-local propagators. We analyze the partition function and main thermodynamic properties arising from perturbative thermal loops. We focus on the p-adic models associated with the tachyon phenomenology in string theories. We reproduce well known features of these theories, but also obtain many new results. In particular, we explain how to maintain consistency of such non-local theories by avoiding the appearance of ghosts at finite temperature. As a consequence of this fact, the vacuum energy in p-adic theories becomes positive…
We study the ultraviolet asymptotics in non-simply laced affine Toda theories considering them as perturbed non-affine Toda theories, which possess the extended conformal symmetry. We calculate the reflection amplitudes, in non-affine Toda theories and use them to derive the quantization condition for the vacuum wave function, describing zero-mode dynamics. The solution of this quantization conditions for the ground state energy determines the UV asymptotics of the effective central charge. These asymptotics are in a good agreement with Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz(TBA) results. To make the comp…
We use gauge/gravity duality to study the thermodynamics of a generic almost conformal theory, specified by its beta function. Three different phases are identified, a high temperature phase of massless partons, an intermediate quasi-conformal phase and a low temperature confining phase. The limit of a theory with infrared fixed point, in which the coupling does not run to infinity, is also studied. The transitions between the phases are of first order or continuous, depending on the parameters of the beta function. The results presented follow from gauge/gravity duality; no specific boundary …
We numerically construct black hole solutions corresponding to the deconfined, chirally symmetric phase of strongly coupled cascading gauge theories at various temperatures. We compute the free energy as a function of the temperature, and we show that it becomes positive below some critical temperature, indicating the possibility of a first order phase transition at which the theory deconfines and restores the chiral symmetry.
We propose and investigate the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations for the minimal $W_p^N$ models~(associated with the $A_{N-1}$ Lie algebra) perturbed by the least~($Z_N$ invariant) primary field $Φ_N$. Our results reproduce the expected ultraviolet and infrared regimes. In particular for the positive sign of the perturbation our equations describe the behaviour of the ground state flowing from the $W_p^N$ model to the next $W_{p-1}^N$ fixed point.
We calculate the constitutive equations of the stress-energy tensor and the currents of the free massless Dirac field at thermodynamic equilibrium with acceleration and rotation and a conserved axial charge by using the density operator approach. We carry out an expansion in thermal vorticity to the second order with finite axial chemical potential $μ_A$. The obtained coefficients of the expansion are expressed as correlators of angular momenta and boost operators with the currents. We confirm previous observations that the axial chemical potential induces non-vanishing components of the stres…
We study the ultraviolet asymptotics in affine Toda theories. These models are considered as perturbed non-affine Toda theories. We calculate the reflection amplitudes, which relate different exponential fields with the same quantum numbers. Using these amplitudes we derive the quantization condition for the vacuum wave function, describing zero-mode dynamics, and calculate the UV asymptotics of the effective central charge. These asymptotics are in a good agreement with thermodynamic Bethe ansatz results.
We study the ultraviolet asymptotics in $A_n$ affine Toda theories with integrable boundary actions. The reflection amplitudes of non-affine Toda theories in the presence of conformal boundary actions have been obtained from the quantum mechanical reflections of the wave functional in the Weyl chamber and used for the quantization conditions and ground-state energies. We compare these results with the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz derived from both the bulk and (conjectured) boundary scattering amplitudes. The two independent approaches match very well and provide the non-perturbative checks of t…
We study the ratio of the entropy to the total energy in conformal field theories at finite temperature. For the free field realizations of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in D=4 and the (2,0) tensor multiplet in D=6, the ratio is bounded from above. The corresponding bounds are less stringent than the recently proposed Verlinde bound. For strongly coupled CFTs with AdS duals, we show that the ratio obeys the Verlinde bound even in the presence of rotation. For such CFTs, we point out an intriguing resemblance in their thermodynamic formulas with the corresponding ones of two-dimensional CFTs. The…
We show that the equations of motion of generalized theories of gravity are equivalent to the thermodynamic relation $δQ = T δS$. Our proof relies on extending previous arguments by using a more general definition of the Noether charge entropy. We have thus completed the implementation of Jacobson's proposal to express Einstein's equations as a thermodynamic equation of state. Additionally, we find that the Noether charge entropy obeys the second law of thermodynamics if the matter energy momentum tensor obeys the null energy condition. Our results support the idea that gravitation on a macros…
We study on-shell and off-shell properties of the supersymmetric sinh-Gordon and perturbed SUSY Yang-Lee models using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and form factors. Identifying the supersymmetric models with the Eight Vertex Free Fermion Model, we derive inversion relation for inhomogeneous transfer matrix and TBA equations and get correct UV results. We obtain two-point form factors of the trace of energy-momentum tensor using the Watson equations and their SUSY transformations. As an application, we compute the UV central charge using these form factors and spectral representation of the $…
We study $N$=2 supersymmetric integrable theories with spontaneously-broken \Zn\ symmetry. They have exact soliton masses given by the affine $SU(n)$ Toda masses and fractional fermion numbers given by multiples of $1/n$. The basic such $N$=2 integrable theory is the $A_n$-type $N$=2 minimal model perturbed by the most relevant operator. The soliton content and exact S-matrices are obtained using the Landau-Ginzburg description. We study the thermodynamics of these theories and calculate the ground-state energies exactly, verifying that they have the correct conformal limits. We conjecture tha…
We study thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a five-dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black hole in $AdS_5\times{S^5}$ spacetime by treating the cosmological constant as the number of colors in the boundary gauge theory and its conjugate quantity as the associated chemical potential. It is found that the chemical potential is always negative in the stable branch of black hole thermodynamics and it has a chance to be positive, but appears in the unstable branch. We calculate scalar curvatures of the thermodynamical Weinhold metric, Ruppeiner metric and Quevedo metric, respectively and we f…
We show that at sufficiently large chemical potential SU(N) lattice gauge theories in the strong coupling limit with staggered fermions are in a chirally symmetric phase. The proof employs a polymer cluster expansion which exploits the anisotropy between timelike and spacelike directions in the presence of a quark chemical potential $μ$. The expansion is shown to converge in the infinite volume limit at any temperature for sufficiently large $μ$. All expectations of chirally non-invariant local fermion operators vanish identically, or, equivalently, their correlations cluster exponentially, wi…
This paper starts from a toy model for inflation in a class of modified theories of gravity in the metric formalism. Instead of the standard procedure -- assuming a non-linear Lagrangian $f(R)$ in the Jordan frame -- we start from a simple $ϕ^2$ potential in the Einstein frame and investigate the corresponding $f(R)$ in the former picture. The addition of an ad-hoc Cosmological Constant in the Einstein frame leads to a Thermodynamical interpretation of this physical system, which allows further insight on its (meta)stability and evolution.
We discuss the free-energy density of bosonic and fermionic theories possessing strongly coupled critical points in D=3. We construct a stationary renormalization group trajectory which interpolates between the free massless theory of N scalars and a class of interacting theories including both bosons and fermions. At a special point of this trajectory the free-energy density is 5/4 times the free-energy density of the O(N) vector model at its nontrivial critical point. Our method could in principle be useful in the study of other theories with strongly coupled fixed points, such as {\cal N}=4…
In this paper, we study Einstein gravity either minimally or non-minimally coupled to a vector field which breaks the gauge symmetry explicitly in general dimensions. We first consider a minimal theory which is simply the Einstein-Proca theory extended with a quartic self-interaction term for the vector field. We obtain its general static maximally symmetric black hole solution and study the thermodynamics using Wald formalism. The aspects of the solution are much like a Reissner-Nordstrøm black hole in spite of that a global charge cannot be defined for the vector. For non-minimal theories, w…
In modified theories of gravity, higher curvature terms may be added to the Einstein-Hilbert action. Conventionally, the effects of the higher curvature terms on the black hole thermodynamics are rather difficult to obtain. In this paper, we show that, at least at the first order level, the corrections to the thermodynamics of the Schwarzschild black hole can be easily obtained, without solving the modified black hole metric. We examine some specific examples, which produces the known results in the literature, as well as those previously unknown. Furthermore, we find some nonperturbative exac…
We investigate the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSL) in generalized theories of gravity. We examine the total entropy evolution with time including the horizon entropy, the non-equilibrium entropy production, and the entropy of all matter, field and energy components. We derive a universal condition to protect the generalized second law and study its validity in different gravity theories. In Einstein gravity, (even in the phantom-dominated universe with a Schwarzschild black hole), Lovelock gravity, and braneworld gravity, we show that the condition to keep the GSL can always be …
We consider 3+1-dimensional gauge theories at finite temperature and a finite density of charges which couple to a 2+1-dimensional Chern-Simons operator, giving rise to a theta-term with constant spatial gradient of theta. The strong-coupling limit of thermal N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory with this kind of anisotropic deformation has been used in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence as a model for strongly coupled anisotropic quark-gluon plasma. In this paper we work out the thermodynamics and the (nontrivial) phase diagram in the limit of vanishing gauge coupling and compare with the corre…
The relationship between thermodynamics and the Lloyd bound on the holographic complexity for a black hole has been of interest. We consider $D$ dimensional anti-de Sitter black holes with hyperbolic geometry as well as black holes with momentum relaxation that have a minimum for temperature and mass. We show that the singular points of the thermodynamic curvature of the black holes, as thermodynamic systems, correspond to the zero points of the action and volume complexity at the Lloyd bound. For such black holes with a single horizon, the complexity of volume and the complexity of action at …
Surface charges and their algebra in interacting Lagrangian gauge field theories are investigated by using techniques from the variational calculus. In the case of exact solutions and symmetries, the surface charges are interpreted as a Pfaff system. Integrability is governed by Frobenius' theorem and the charges associated with the derived symmetry algebra are shown to vanish. In the asymptotic context, we provide a generalized covariant derivation of the result that the representation of the asymptotic symmetry algebra through charges may be centrally extended. Finally, we make contact with …
We extend to the Horndeski realm the irreversible thermodynamics description of gravity previously studied in "first generation" scalar-tensor theories. We identify a subclass of Horndeski theories as an out-of--equilibrium state, while general relativity corresponds to an equilibrium state. In this context, we identify an effective heat current, "temperature of gravity", and shear viscosity in the space of theories. The identification is accomplished by recasting the field equations as effective Einstein equations with an effective dissipative fluid, with Einstein gravity as the equilibrium s…
We derive the equations of motion for Palatini F(R) gravity by applying an entropy balance law T dS= δQ+δN to the local Rindler wedge that can be constructed at each point of spacetime. Unlike previous results for metric F(R), there is no bulk viscosity term in the irreversible flux δN. Both theories are equivalent to particular cases of Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor gravity. We show that the thermodynamical approach can be used ab initio also for this class of gravitational theories and it is able to provide both the metric and scalar equations of motion. In this case, the presence of an addition…
We show that field equations of some typical modified gravity theories can be recast as thermodynamic first law on dynamical holographic screens. The thermodynamic second law are also presented.
The phase structure of four-fermion theories is thoroughly investigated with varying temperature and chemical potential for arbitrary space-time dimensions $(2 \leq D < 4)$ by using the 1/N expansion method. It is shown that the chiral symmetry is restored in the theory under consideration for sufficiently high temperature and/or chemical potential. The critical line dividing the symmetric and broken phase is given explicitly. It is found that for space-time dimension $2 \leq D < 3$ both the first-order and second-order phase transition occur depending on the value of temperature and chemical …
The issue discussed is a thermodynamic version of the Bern-Kosower master amplitude formula, which contains all necessary one-loop Feynman diagrams. It is demonstrated how the master amplitude at finite values of temperature and chemical potential can be formulated within the framework of the world-line formalism. In particular we present an elegant method how to introduce a chemical potential for a loop in the master formula. Various useful integral formulae for the master amplitude are then obtained. The non-analytic property of the master formula is also derived in the zero temperature limi…
We demonstrate that there does exist an equilibrium description of thermodynamics on the apparent horizon in the expanding cosmological background for a wide class of modified gravity theories with the Lagrangian density $f(R, ϕ, X)$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar and $X$ is the kinetic energy of a scalar field $ϕ$. This comes from a suitable definition of an energy momentum tensor of the "dark" component obeying the local energy conservation law in the Jordan frame. It is shown that the equilibrium description in terms of the horizon entropy $S$ is convenient because it takes into account the…
