We analyze several aspects of the transport dynamics in the LH1-RC core of purple bacteria, which consists basically in a ring of antenna molecules that transport the energy into a target molecule, the reaction center, placed in the center of the ring. We show that the periodicity of the system plays an important role to explain the relevance of the initial state in the transport efficiency. This picture is modified, and the transport enhanced for any initial state, when considering that molecules have different energies, and when including their interaction with the environment. We study this last situation by using stochastic Schr{ö}dinger equations, both for Markovian and non-Markovian type of interactions.
The long-standing problem of nearly perfect photosynthetic yield in some types of bacteria and nearly all kinds of plants despite the interaction with a hot and noisy environment has witnessed quantum optical explanations in the last decade or so. Typically in these explanations, photosynthetic reaction centers are modeled as five-level quantum heat engines where the generation of Fano-type interference due to the coupling of discrete state transitions with a common Markovian reservoir is held responsible for the enhancement of the photosynthetic efficiency. In this work, we go beyond the Born…
Excitation energy transfer (EET) and electron transfer (ET) are crucially involved in photosynthetic processes. In reality, the photosynthetic reaction center constitutes an open quantum system of EET and ET, which manifests an interplay of pigments, solar light and phonon baths. So far theoretical studies have been mainly based on master equation approaches in the Markovian condition. The non-Markovian environmental effect, which may play a crucial role, has not been sufficiently considered. In this work, we propose a mixed dynamic approach to investigate this open system. The influence of ph…
Transport phenomena in photosynthetic systems have attracted a great deal of attention due to their potential role in devising novel photovoltaic materials. In particular, energy transport in light-harvesting complexes is considered quite efficient due to the balance between coherent quantum evolution and decoherence, a phenomenon coined Environment-Assisted Quantum Transport (ENAQT). Although this effect has been extensively studied, its behavior is typically described in terms of the decoherence's strength, namely weak, moderate or strong. Here, we study the ENAQT in terms of quantum correla…
Photosynthesis is an important and complex physical process in nature, whose comprehensive understanding would have many relevant industrial applications, for instance in the field of energy production. In this paper we propose a quantum algorithm for the simulation of the excitonic transport of energy, occurring in the first stage of the process of photosynthesis. The algorithm takes in account the quantum and environmental effects (pure-dephasing), influencing the quantum transport. We performed quantum simulations of such phenomena, for a proof of concept scenario, in an actual quantum comp…
Giant strides in ultrashort laser pulse technology have enabled real-time observation of dynamical processes in complex molecular systems. Specifically, the discovery of oscillatory transients in the two-dimensional electronic spectra of photosynthetic systems stimulated a number of theoretical investigations exploring possible physical mechanisms of the remarkable quantum efficiency of light harvesting processes. However, the theories employed have reached a high degree of sophistication and have become complex, making it difficult to gain insights into microscopic processes and biologically …
Photosynthesis is a highly efficient process, nearly 100 percent of the red photons falling on the surface of leaves reach the reaction center and get transformed into energy. Most theoretical studies on photosynthetic complexes focus mainly on the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex obtained from green-sulfur bacteria. Quantum coherence was speculated to play a significant role in this very efficient transport process. However, recent reports indicate quantum coherence via exciton transport may not be as relevant as coherence originating via vibronic processes to Photosynthesis. Regardless of the or…
Answering the titular question has become a central motivation in the field of quantum biology, ever since the idea was raised following a series of experiments demonstrating wave-like behavior in photosynthetic complexes. Here, we report a direct evaluation of the effect of quantum coherence on the efficiency of three natural complexes. An open quantum systems approach allows us to simultaneously identify their level of "quantumness" and efficiency, under natural physiological conditions. We show that these systems reside in a mixed quantum-classical regime, characterized by dephasing-assiste…
Environment-Assisted Quantum Walks in Photosynthetic Energy Transfer
Despite several different measures of efficiency that are applicable to the photosynthetic systems, a precise degree of efficiency of these systems is not completely determined. Introducing an efficient model for the dynamics of light-harvesting complexes in biological environments is a major purpose in investigating such systems. Here, we investigate the effect of macroscopic quantum behavior of a system of two pigments on the transport phenomena in this system model which interacts with an oscillating environment. We use the second-order perturbation theory to calculate the time-dependent po…
We theoretically show that the dynamics of a driven quantum harmonic oscillator subject to non-dissipative noise is formally equivalent to the single-particle dynamics propagating through an experimentally feasible dynamically-disordered photonic network. Using this correspondence, we find that noise assisted energy transport occurs in this network and, if the noise is Markovian or delta-correlated, we can obtain an analytical solution for the maximum amount of transferred energy between all network's sites at a fixed propagation distance. Beyond the Markovian limit, we further consider two di…
The application of open quantum systems in biological processes such as photosynthetic complexes has recently received renewed attention. In this paper, we introduce a quantum algorithm for simulation of Markovian dynamics of the Fenna-Matthew-Olson (FMO) complex that exists in photosynthesis using a "universal set" of a one-parameter semigroup of generators. We investigate the details of each generator that has been obtained from spectral decomposition of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan (GKS) matrix by using linear combination and unitary conjugation. Also, we present a simple quantum circui…
