We present a detailed analytical analysis of the propagation of Bogoliubov phonons on top of Bose-Einstein condensates with spatial and temporal step-like discontinuities in the hydrodynamic limit and focus on some features in the correlations patterns, in particular of density-density correlations. The application to the study of the Hawking signal in the formation of acoustic black hole-like configurations is also discussed.
In this paper we extend the hydrodynamic results of [1] and study, analytically, the propagation of Bogoliubov phonons on top of Bose-Einstein condensates with step-like discontinuities by taking into account dispersion effects. We focus on the Hawking signal in the density-density correlations in the formation of acoustic black hole-like configurations.
Observing quantum particle creation by black holes (Hawking radiation) in the astrophysical context is, in ordinary situations, hopeless. Nevertheless the Hawking effect, which depends only on kinematical properties of wave propagation in the presence of horizons, is present also in nongravitational contexts, for instance in stationary fluids undergoing supersonic flow. We present results on how to observe the analog Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensates by a direct measurement of the density correlations due to the phonon pairs (Hawking quanta-partner) created by the acoustic horizon…
We study the two-body momentum correlation signal in a quasi one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a sonic horizon. We identify the relevant correlation lines in momentum space and compute the intensity of the corresponding signal. We consider a set of different experimental procedures and identify the specific issues of each measuring process. We show that some inter-channel correlations, in particular the Hawking quantum-partner one, are particularly well adapted for witnessing quantum non-separability, being resilient to the effects of temperature and/or quantum quench…
Inspired by a recent experiment by Steinhauer and co-workers, we present a simple model which describes the formation of an acoustic black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate, allowing an analytical computation of the evolution in time of the corresponding density-density correlator. We show the emergence of analog Hawking radiation out of a "quantum atmosphere" region significantly displaced from the horizon. This is quantitatively studied both at $T=0$ and even in the presence of an initial temperature T, as is always the case experimentally.
This chapter is an introduction to the Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose condensates as applied to the study of the spontaneous emission of phonons in a stationary condensate flowing at supersonic speeds. This emission process is a condensed-matter analog of Hawking radiation from astrophysical black holes but is derived here from a microscopic quantum theory of the condensate without any use of the analogy with gravitational systems. To facilitate physical understanding of the basic concepts, a simple one-dimensional geometry with a stepwise homogenous flow is considered which allows for a ful…
The density density correlation function is computed for the Bogoliubov pseudoparticles created in a Bose-Einstein condensate undergoing a black hole flow. On the basis of the gravitational analogy, the method used relies only on quantum field theory in curved spacetime techniques. A comparison with the results obtained by ab initio full condensed matter calculations is given, confirming the validity of the approximation used provided the profile of the flow varies smoothly on scales compared to the condensate healing length.
We model a sonic black hole analog in a quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate, using a Gross-Pitaevskii equation matching the configuration of a recent experiment by Steinhauer [Nat. Phys. 10, 864 (2014)]. The model agrees well with important features of the experimental observations, demonstrating their hydrodynamic nature. We find that a zero-frequency bow wave is generated at the inner (white hole) horizon, which grows in proportion to the square of the background condensate density. The relative motion of the black and white hole horizons produces a Doppler shift of the bow wave a…
We study the quantum fluctuations in a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate realizing an analogous acoustic black hole. The taking into account of evanescent channels and of zero modes makes it possible to accurately reproduce recent experimental measurements of the density correlation function. We discuss the determination of Hawking temperature and show that in our model the analogous radiation presents some significant departure from thermality.
The Fourier transform of the density-density correlation function in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) analog black hole is a useful tool to investigate correlations between the Hawking particles and their partners. It can be expressed in terms of $\langle ^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{ext}}\ ^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{int}} \rangle$, where $^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{ext}}$ is the annihilation operator for the Hawking particle and $^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{int}} $ is the corresponding one for the partner. This basic quantity is calculated for …
We propose an experimental scheme to observe the Gibbons-Hawking effect in the acoustic analog of a 1+1-dimensional de Sitter universe, produced in an expanding, cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that a two-level system created at the center of the trap, an atomic quantum dot interacting with phonons, observes a thermal Bose distribution at the de Sitter temperature.
We report numerical evidence of Hawking emission of Bogoliubov phonons from a sonic horizon in a flowing one-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The presence of Hawking radiation is revealed from peculiar long-range patterns in the density-density correlation function of the gas. Quantitative agreement between our fully microscopic calculations and the prediction of analog models is obtained in the hydrodynamic limit. New features are predicted and the robustness of the Hawking signal against a finite temperature discussed.
We study the properties of a $2+1$ dimensional Sonic black hole (SBH) that can be realised, in a quasi-two-dimensional two-component spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The corresponding equation for phase fluctuations in the total density mode that describes phonon field in the hydrodynamic approximation is described by a scalar field equation in $2+1$ dimension whose space-time metric is significantly different from that of the SBH realised from a single component BEC that was studied experimentally, and, theoretically meticulously in literature. Given the breakdown of the irr…
We study double-barrier interfaces separating regions of asymptotically subsonic and supersonic flow of Bose condensed atoms. These setups contain at least one black hole sonic horizon from which the analog of Hawking radiation should be generated and emitted against the flow in the subsonic region. Multiple coherent scattering by the double-barrier structure strongly modulates the transmission probability of phonons, rendering it very sensitive to their frequency. As a result, resonant tunneling occurs with high probability within a few narrow frequency intervals. This gives rise to highly no…
Acoustic analogues of black holes (dumb holes) are generated when a supersonic fluid flow entrains sound waves and forms a trapped region from which sound cannot escape. The surface of no return, the acoustic horizon, is qualitatively very similar to the event horizon of a general relativity black hole. In particular Hawking radiation (a thermal bath of phonons with temperature proportional to the ``surface gravity'') is expected to occur. In this note we consider quasi-one-dimensional supersonic flow of a Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) in a Laval nozzle (converging-diverging nozzle), with a …
We determine the feasibility of detecting analogue Hawking radiation in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of atom loss induced heating. We find that phonons created by three-body losses overshadow those due to analogue Hawking radiation. To overcome this problem, three-body losses may have to be suppressed, for example as proposed by Search et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 140401 (2004)]. The reduction of losses to a few percent of their normal rate is typically sufficient to suppress the creation of loss phonons on the time scale of a fast analogue Hawking phonon detection.
Arising out of a Non-local non-relativistic BEC, we present an Analogue gravity model upto $\mathcal{O}(ξ^{2})$ accuracy in the presence of the quantum potential term for a canonical acoustic BH in $(3+1)$-d spacetime where the series solution of the free minimally coupled KG equation for the large length scale massive scalar modes is derived. We systematically address the issues of the presence of the quantum potential term being the root cause of a UV-IR coupling between short wavelength `primary' modes which are supposedly Hawking radiated through the sonic horizon and the large wavelength …
The condensates of cold atoms at zero temperature in the tunable binary Bose-Einstein condensate system are studied with the Rabi transition between atomic hyperfine states where the system can be represented by a coupled two-field model of gapless excitations and gapped excitations. We set up the configuration of the supersonic and subsonic regimes with the acoustic horizon between them in the elongated two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, trying to mimic Hawking radiations, in particular due to the gapped excitations. The simplified step-like sound speed change is adopted for the subsoni…
We consider simple models of Bose-Einstein condensates to study analog pair-creation effects, namely the Hawking effect from acoustic black holes and the dynamical Casimir effect in rapidly time-dependent backgrounds. We also focus on a proposal by Cornell to amplify the Hawking signal in density-density correlators by reducing the atoms' interactions shortly before measurements are made.
We consider a sonic analog of a black hole realized in the one-dimensional flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that one- and two-body momentum distributions accessible by present-day experimental techniques provide clear direct evidence (i) of the occurrence of a sonic horizon, (ii) of the associated acoustic Hawking radiation and (iii) of the quantum nature of the Hawking process. The signature of the quantum behavior persists even at temperatures larger than the chemical potential.
The sonic analogue of Hawking radiation can now be experimentally recreated in Bose-Einstein Condensates that contain an acoustic black hole. In these experiments the signal strength and analogue Hawking temperature increase for denser condensates, which however also suffer increased atom losses from inelastic collisions. To determine how these affect analogue Hawking radiation, we numerically simulate creation of the latter in a Bose-Einstein Condensate in the presence of atomic losses. In particular we explore modifications of density-density correlations through which the radiation has been…
Taking advantage of the known exact mapping of the one-dimensional Hard Core Bose (HCB) fluid onto a non-interacting spinless fermion gas, we examine in full detail a thought experiment on cold atoms confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trap, in order to investigate the emergence of the analogue Hawking radiation. The dynamics of a gas of interacting bosons impinging on an external potential is exactly tracked up to the reach of a stationary state. Under few strict conditions on the experimental parameters, the stationary state is shown to be described asymptotically by a thermal distribution, …
We study several realistic configurations allowing to realize an acoustic horizon in the flow of a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. In each case we give an analytical description of the flow pattern, of the spectrum of Hawking radiation and of the associated quantum fluctuations. Our calculations confirm that the non local correlations of the density fluctuations previously studied in a simplified model provide a clear signature of Hawking radiation also in realistic configurations. In addition we explain by direct computation how this non local signal relates to short range modificat…
Hawking radiation, the spontaneous emission of thermal photons from an event horizon, is one of the most intriguing and elusive predictions of field theory in curved spacetimes. A formally analogue phenomenon occurs at the supersonic transition of a fluid: in this respect, ultracold gases stand out among the most promising systems but the theoretical modelling of this effect has always been carried out in semiclassical approximation, borrowing part of the analysis from the gravitational analogy. Here we discuss the exact solution of a one-dimensional Bose gas flowing against an obstacle, showi…
We theoretically propose a finite-size quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with coherent source and drain placed at its two ends, which can in principle sustain a stationary sonic black hole with a single event horizon. Our analysis is focused on the condensate persistence against quantum fluctuations. We show that similar to white hole-black hole pairs, dynamical instabilities occur. Investigating in detail the instabilities' dependence on the system parameters, we also identify windows of formally infinite black hole lifetimes. By using quantum depletion of the condensate as a dia…
We consider a simple model for a black-hole laser: a Bose-Einstein condensate with uniform speed of sound and partially uniform flow, establishing two horizons, a black-hole and a white-hole horizon. Waves confined between the horizons are amplified similar to radiation in a laser cavity. Black-hole lasing appears as an instability with discrete sets of modes given approximately by a round-trip condition. We found that, in addition to the regular Hawking radiation, trans-Planckian radiation does tunnel out of the black-hole laser.
We present a theory of the density correlations that appear in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate as a consequence of the dynamical Casimir emission of pairs of Bogoliubov phonons when the atom-atom scattering length is modulated in time. Different regimes as a function of the temporal shape of the modulation are identified and a simple physical picture of the phenomenon is discussed. Analytical expressions for the density correlation function are provided for the most significant limiting cases. This theory is able to explain some unexpected features recently observed in numerical calculation…
Twenty years ago, Rovelli proposed that the degeneracy of black hole (i.e. the exponential of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy) is given by the number of ways the black hole horizon area can be expressed as a sum of unit areas. However, when counting the sum, one should treat the area quanta on the black hole horizon as distinguishable. This distinguishability of area quanta is noted in Rovelli's paper. Building on this idea, we derive that the Hawking radiation spectrum is not given by Planck radiation spectrum (i.e., Bose-Einstein distribution) but given by Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution.
It has been proposed that a black hole horizon should generate Hawking radiation. In order to test this theory, we have created a narrow, low density, very low temperature atomic Bose-Einstein condensate, containing an analog black hole horizon and an inner horizon, as in a charged black hole. We observe Hawking radiation emitted by the black hole. This is the output of the black hole laser. We also observe the exponential growth of a standing wave between the horizons. The latter results from interference between the negative energy partners of the Hawking radiation and the negative energy pa…
We study the analogy between the Hawking radiation in Black-Holes and the Quantum depletion process of a Bose-Einstein condensate by using the Bogoliubov transformations method. We find that the relation between the Bogoliubov coefficients is similar in both cases (in the appropriate regimes). We then connect the condensate variables with those associated to the Black-Hole, demonstrating then that the zero temperature regime of the condensate is equivalent to the existence of an event horizon in gravity.
We have used the analogy between gravitational systems and non-homogeneous fluid flows to calculate the density-density correlation function of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an acoustic black hole. The emission of correlated pairs of phonons by Hawking-like process results into a peculiar long-range density correlation. Quantitative estimations of the effect are provided for realistic experimental configurations.
Analogue gravity is based on the simple observation that perturbations propagating in several physical systems can be described by a quantum field theory in a curved spacetime. While phenomena like Hawking radiation are hardly detectable in astrophysical black holes, these effects may be experimentally tested in analogue systems. In this Thesis, focusing on Bose-Einstein condensates, we present our recent results about analogue models of gravity from three main perspectives: as laboratory tests of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, for the techniques that they provide to address various…
We compute the entanglement entropy associated to the Hawking emission of a $(1+1)$-dimensional acoustic black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We use the brick wall model proposed by 't Hooft, adapted to the momentum space, in order to tackle the case when high frequency dispersion is taken in account. As expected, we find that in the hydrodynamic limit the entropy only depends on the size of the box in the near-horizon region, as for gravitational $(1+1)$-dimensional black holes. When dispersion effects are considered, we find a correction that depends on the square of the size of the nea…
To obtain the end-point evolution of the so-called black hole laser instability, we study the set of stationary solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for piecewise constant potentials which admit a homogeneous solution with a supersonic flow in the central region between two discontinuities. When the distance between them is larger than a critical value, we recover that the homogeneous solution is unstable, and we identify the lowest energy state. We show that it can be viewed as determining the saturated value of the first (node-less) complex frequency mode which drives the instability. …
We investigate quantum entanglement in an analogue black hole realized in the flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. The system is described by a three-mode Gaussian state and we construct the corresponding covariance matrix at zero and finite temperature. We study associated bipartite and tripartite entanglement measures and discuss their experimental observation. We identify a simple optical setup equivalent to the analogue Bose-Einstein black hole which suggests a new way of determining the Hawking temperature and grey-body factor of the system.
We study the phonon fluxes emitted when the condensate velocity crosses the speed of sound, i.e., in backgrounds which are analogous to that of a black hole. We focus on elongated one dimensional condensates and on stationary flows. Our theoretical analysis and numerical results are based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation without further approximation. The spectral properties of the fluxes and of the long distance density-density correlations are obtained, both with and without an initial temperature. In realistic conditions, we show that the condensate temperature dominates the fluxes and …
We observe spontaneous Hawking radiation, stimulated by quantum vacuum fluctuations, emanating from an analogue black hole in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Correlations are observed between the Hawking particles outside the black hole and the partner particles inside. These correlations indicate an approximately thermal distribution of Hawking radiation. We find that the high energy pairs are entangled, while the low energy pairs are not, within the reasonable assumption that excitations with different frequencies are not correlated. The entanglement verifies the quantum nature of the Ha…
We consider the entropy associated to the phonons generated via the Hawking mechanism in a sonic hole in a Bose-Einsten condensate. In a previous paper, we looked at the (1+1)-dimensional case both in the hydrodynamic limit and in the case when high-frequency dispersion is taken in account. Here, we extend the analysis, based on the 't Hooft brick wall model, by including transverse excitations. We show that they can cure the infrared divergence that appears in the (1+1)-dimensional case, by acting as an effective mass for the phonons. In the hydrodynamic limit, where high-frequency dispersion…
Stimulated Hawking radiation in an analogue black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate was reported seven years ago, and it was claimed that the stimulation was of the black hole lasing variety. The study was based on observation of rapidly-growing negative-energy waves. We find that the Hawking particles are directly observable in the experimental plots, which confirms the stimulated Hawking radiation. We further verify this result with new measurements. Also, the observed Hawking particles provide a sensitive, background-free probe of the underlying mechanism of the stimulation. The experiment…
Recent developments in simulating fundamental quantum field theoretical effects in the kinematical context of analogue gravity are reviewed. Specifically, it is argued that a curved space-time generalization of the Unruh-Davies effect -- the Gibbons-Hawking effect in the de Sitter space-time of inflationary cosmological models -- can be implemented and verified in an ultracold gas of bosonic atoms.
We theoretically study the entanglement between phonons spontaneously generated in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates by analog Hawking and dynamical Casimir processes. The quantum evolution of the system is numerically modeled by a truncated Wigner method based on a full microscopic description of the condensate and state non-separability is assessed by applying a generalized Peres-Horodecki criterion. The peculiar distribution of entanglement is described in both real and momentum spaces and its robustness against increasing initial temperature is investigated. Viable strategies to experimenta…
We propose a Gaussian scalar field theory in a curved 2D metric with an event horizon as the low-energy effective theory for a weakly confined, invariant Random Matrix ensemble (RME). The presence of an event horizon naturally generates a bath of Hawking radiation, which introduces a finite temperature in the model in a non-trivial way. A similar mapping with a gravitational analogue model has been constructed for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) pushed to flow at a velocity higher than its speed of sound, with Hawking radiation as sound waves propagating over the cold atoms. Our work suggests…
Hawking effect of Dirac particles in a variable-mass Kerr space-time is investigated by using method of the generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. The location and the temperature of event horizon of the non-stationary Kerr black hole are derived. It is shown that the temperature and the shape of event horizon depend not only on the time but also on the polar angle. However, our results demonstrate that the Fermi-Dirac spectrum displays a new spin-rotation effect which is absent from that of Bose-Einstein distribution.
We study phases of equilibrium Hawking radiation in $d$-dimensional holographic CFTs on spatially compact spacetimes with two black holes. In the particular phases chosen the dual $(d+1)$-dimensional bulk solutions describe a variety of black funnels and droplets. In the former the CFT readily conducts heat between the two black holes, but it in the latter such conduction is highly suppressed. While the generic case can be understood in certain extreme limits of parameters on general grounds, we focus on CFTs on specific geometries conformally equivalent to a pair of $d \ge 4$ AdS${}_d$-Schwar…
Hawking effect of Dirac particles in a variable-mass Kerr space-time is investigated by using a method called as the generalized tortoise coordinate transformation. The location and the temperature of the event horizon of the non-stationary Kerr black hole are derived. It is shown that the temperature and the shape of the event horizon depend not only on the time but also on the angle. However, the Fermi-Dirac spectrum displays a residual term which is absent from that of Bose-Einstein distribution.
We study acoustic white holes in a steadily flowing atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. A white hole configuration is obtained when the flow velocity goes from a super-sonic value in the upstream region to a sub-sonic one in the downstream region. The scattering of phonon wavepackets on a white hole horizon is numerically studied in terms of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of mean-field theory: dynamical stability of the acoustic white hole is found, as well as a signature of a nonlinear back-action of the incident phonon wavepacket onto the horizon. The correlation pattern of density fluctuations …
We analytically study the low-frequency properties of the analogue Hawking effect in Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that in one-dimensional flows displaying an analogue horizon, the Hawking effect is dominant in the low-frequency regime. This happens despite non vanishing greybody factors, that is, the coupling of the Hawking mode and its partner to the mode propagating with the flow. To show this, we obtained analytical expressions for the scattering coefficients, in general flows and taking into account the full Bogoliubov dispersion relation. We discuss the obtained expressions for the …
One can use transsonic Bose-Einstein condensates of alkali atoms to establish the laboratory analog of the event horizon and to measure the acoustic version of Hawking radiation. We determine the conditions for supersonic flow and the Hawking temperature for realistic condensates on waveguides where an external potential plays the role of a supersonic nozzle. The transition to supersonic speed occurs at the potential maximum and the Hawking temperature is entirely determined by the curvature of the potential.
We propose a simple experiment to create a sonic horizon in isotropically trapped cold atoms within currently available experimental techniques. Numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation shows that the sonic horizon should appear by making the condensate expand. The expansion is triggered by changing the interaction which can be controlled by the Feshbach resonance in real experiments. The sonic horizon is shown to be quasi-static for sufficiently strong interaction or large number of atoms. The characteristic temperature that is associated with particle emission from the horizon, …
General types of Bose-Einstein condensates are considered. The formation of black-hole analogues is examined for both short- and long-range interactions for arbitrary spatial dimensions greater than two. The former case includes non-linear derivative terms plus an inevitable external potential, while the latter one consists solely of gravity-like self-interactions for which intrinsic formation of analogue Schwarzschild-type background space-times is possible. The corresponding geometries are studied, and it is shown how they can be made stable. Their Hawking temperature is estimated, and it is…
The work is divided in three parts. We devote the first part to the study of analog Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensates. We study numerically the birth of a sonic black hole in an outcoupled Bose-Einstein condensate after relaxing the confinement provided by an optical lattice. We also study possible signatures of spontaneous Hawking radiation. We propose that the violation of CS inequalities is a smoking gun of the presence of the Hawking effect. We compare this criterion with the presence of entaglement, finding that both are equivalent under usual assumptions. Finally, we study a…
We study the evolution of an initially confined atom condensate which is progressively outcoupled by gradually lowering the confining barrier on one side. The goal is to identify protocols that best lead to a quasi-stationary sonic black hole separating regions of subsonic and supersonic flow. An optical lattice is found to be more efficient than a single barrier in yielding a long-time stationary flow. This is best achieved if the final conduction band is broad and its minimum not much lower than the initial chemical potential. An optical lattice with a realistic Gaussian envelope yields simi…
We investigate, within the framework of Quantum Field Theory in curved space, the correlations across the horizon of a black hole in order to highlight the particle-partner pair creation mechanism at the origin of Hawking radiation. The analysis concerns both acoustic black holes, formed by Bose-Einstein condensates, and gravitational black holes. More precisely, we have considered a typical acoustic black hole metric with two asymptotic homogeneous regions and the Schwarzschild metric as describing a gravitational black hole. By considering equal time correlation functions, we find a striking…
