We study the analogy between the Hawking radiation in Black-Holes and the Quantum depletion process of a Bose-Einstein condensate by using the Bogoliubov transformations method. We find that the relation between the Bogoliubov coefficients is similar in both cases (in the appropriate regimes). We then connect the condensate variables with those associated to the Black-Hole, demonstrating then that the zero temperature regime of the condensate is equivalent to the existence of an event horizon in gravity.
We study the low-temperature thermodynamics of weakly-interacting uniform liquids in one-dimensional attractive Bose-Bose mixtures.~The Bogoliubov approach is used to simultaneously describe quantum and thermal fluctuations. First, we investigate in detail two different thermal mechanisms driving the liquid-to-gas transition, the dynamical instability and the evaporation, and we draw the phase diagram. Then, we compute the main thermodynamic quantities of the liquid, such as the chemical potential, the Tan's contact, the adiabatic sound velocity and the specific heat at constant volume. The st…
We report a simple method for the creation of Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{85}$Rb by direct evaporation in a crossed optical dipole trap. The independent control of the trap frequencies and magnetic bias field afforded by the trapping scheme permits full control of the trapped atomic sample, enabling the collision parameters to be easily manipulated to achieve efficient evaporation in the vicinity of the 155 G Feshbach resonance. We produce nearly pure condensates of up to $4\times10^4$ atoms and demonstrate the tunable nature of the atomic interactions.
We have measured the quantum depletion of an interacting homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate, and confirmed the 70-year old theory of N.N. Bogoliubov. The observed condensate depletion is reversibly tuneable by changing the strength of the interparticle interactions. Our atomic homogeneous condensate is produced in an optical-box trap, the interactions are tuned via a magnetic Feshbach resonance, and the condensed fraction probed by coherent two-photon Bragg scattering.
The one-body density matrix of weakly interacting, condensed bosons in external potentials is calculated using inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory. We determine the condensate deformation caused by weak external potentials on the mean-field level. The momentum distribution of quantum fluctuations around the deformed ground state is obtained analytically, and finally the resulting quantum depletion is calculated. The depletion due to the external potential, or potential depletion for short, is a small correction to the homogeneous depletion, validating our inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory. Analytica…
We report on the single-atom-resolved measurement of the distribution of momenta $\hbar k$ in a weakly interacting Bose gas after a 330 ms time-of-flight. We investigate it for various temperatures and clearly separate two contributions to the depletion of the condensate by their $k$-dependence. The first one is the thermal depletion. The second contribution falls of as $k^{-4}$, and its magnitude increases with the in-trap condensate density as predicted by the Bogoliubov theory at zero temperature. These observations suggest associating it with the quantum depletion. How this contribution ca…
We consider the non-condensate density and density fluctuations of a trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, focusing on the regime where a roton-like excitation spectrum develops. Our results show that a characteristic peak in the non-condensate density occurs at trap center due to the rotons. In this regime we also find that the anomalous density becomes positive and peaked, giving rise to enhanced density fluctuations. We calculate the non-condensate density in momentum space and show that a small momentum halo is associated with the roton excitations.
We investigate how the presence of a localized impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate of trapped cold atoms that interact with each other weakly and repulsively affects the profile of the condensed and excited components at zero temperature. By solving the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we find that an impurity-boson contact attraction (repulsion) causes both components to change in spatial structure in such a way as to be enhanced (suppressed) around the impurity, while slightly declining (growing) in a far region from the impurity. Such behavior of the quantum depletion…
We describe the properties of a mixture of fermionic and bosonic atoms, as they are tuned across a Feshbach resonance associated with a fermionic molecular state. Provided the number of fermionic atoms exceeds the number of bosonic atoms, we argue that there is a critical detuning at which the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is completely depleted. The phases on either side of this quantum phase transition can also be distinguished by the distinct Luttinger constraints on their Fermi surfaces. In both phases, the total volume enclosed by all Fermi surfaces is constrained by the total number of …
We study the expansion of repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in shallow one-dimensional potentials. We show for these systems that the onset of wave chaos in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE), i.e. the onset of exponential separation in Hilbert space of two nearby condensate wave functions, can be used as indication for the onset of depletion of the BEC and the occupation of excited modes within a many-body description. Comparison between the multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree for bosons (MCTDHB) method and the GPE reveals a close correspondence between the man…
We present an optimized strategy for the production of tightly confined Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) of 87Rb in a crossed dipole trap with direct loading from a magneto-optical trap. The dipole trap is created with light of a multifrequency fiber laser with a center wavelength of 1070nm. Evaporative cooling is performed by ramping down the laser power only. A comparison of the resulting atom number in an almost pure BEC to the initial atom number and the value for the gain in phase space density per atom lost confirm that this straightforward strategy is very efficient. We observe that the …
The mean-field limit of a bosonic quantum many-body system is described by (mostly) non-linear equations of motion which may exhibit chaos very much in the spirit of classical particle chaos, i.e. by an exponential separation of trajectories in Hilbert space with a rate given by a positive Lyapunov exponent $λ$. The question now is whether $λ$ imprints itself onto measurable observables of the underlying quantum many-body system even at finite particle numbers. Using a Bose-Einstein condensate expanding in a shallow potential landscape as a paradigmatic example for a bosonic quantum many-body …
We predict the effect of the roton instability for a two-dimensional weakly interacting gas of tilted dipoles in a single homogeneous quantum layer. Being typical for strongly correlated systems, the roton phenomena appear to occur in a weakly interacting gas. It is important that in contrast to a system of normal to wide layer dipoles, breaking of the rotational symmetry for a system of tilted dipoles leads to the convergence of the condensate depletion even up to the threshold of the roton instability, with mean-field approach being valid. Predicted effects can be observed in a wide class of…
Cold trapped Bose-condensed atoms, interacting via hard-sphere repulsive potentials are considered. Simple mean-field approximations show that the condensate distribution inside a harmonic trap always has the shape of a hump with the maximum condensate density occurring at the trap center. However Monte Carlo simulations at high density and strong interactions display the condensate depletion at the trap center. The explanation of this effect of local condensate depletion at trap center is suggested in the frame of self-consistent theory of Bose-condensed systems. The depletion is shown to be …
We report the realisation of a Hanbury-Brown and Twiss (HBT)-like experiment with a gas of strongly interacting bosons at low temperatures. The regime of large interactions and low temperatures is reached in a three-dimensional optical lattice and atom-atom correlations are extracted from the detection of individual metastable Helium atoms after a long free-fall. We observe a HBT bunching in the non-condensed fraction of the gas whose properties strongly deviate from the HBT signals expected for non-interacting bosons. In addition, we show that the measured correlations reflect the peculiar qu…
We study the structure of a Bose-condensed gas after quenching interactions to unitarity. Using the method of cumulants, we decompose the evolving gas in terms of clusters. Within the quantum depletion we observe the emergence of two-body clusters bound purely by many-body effects, scaling continuously with the atomic density. As the unitary Bose gas forms, three-body Efimov clusters are first localized and then sequentially absorbed into the embedded atom-molecule scattering continuum of the surrounding depletion. These results motivate future experimental probes of a quenched Bose-condensate…
We demonstrate the production of large $^7$Li Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical dipole trap using $D_1$ gray molasses. The sub-Doppler cooling technique reduces the temperature of $4\times10^9$ atoms to $25~μ$K in 3~ms. After microwave evaporation cooling in a magnetic quadrupole trap, we transfer the atoms to a crossed optical dipole trap, where we employ a magnetic Feshbach resonance on the $|F=1,m_F=1\rangle$ state. Fast evaporation cooling is achieved by tilting the optical potential using a magnetic field gradient on the top of the Feshbach field. Our setup produces pure condensates…
Ultracold potassium is an interesting candidate for quantum technology applications and fundamental research as it allows controlling intra-atomic interactions via low-field magnetic Feshbach resonances. However, the realization of high-flux sources of Bose-Einstein condensates remains challenging due to the necessity of optical trapping to use magnetic fields as free parameter. We investigate the production of all-optical $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensates with different scattering lengths using a Feshbach resonance near $33$ G. By tuning the scattering length in a range between $75\, a_0$ an…
We report on the production of a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in a simplified vacuum apparatus. Magneto-optical traps with large numbers and ultra-high vacuum for moderately long conservative trap lifetimes of 16 seconds are sequentially obtained with light induced rapid atomic vapor pressure modulation. Subsequent evaporative cooling is carried out in two stages in a hybrid magnetic quadrupole plus optical dipole trap. High evaporation efficiencies are observed in both stages and $^{87}$Rb BECs with more than 10$^5$ atoms can be reliably produced with total evaporation time of only 9.5 s…
We show that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) significantly enhances the depletion of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate in three dimensions. With decreasing anisotropy of the SOC, both the quantum and thermal depletion increase. In particular, different types of SOC give rise to qualitatively different dependences of the condensate depletion on microscopic variables including the scattering length, the strength of the SOC, and the temperature, which can be directly observed once these types of SOC are realized in experiments. Moreover, we point out that thermal depletion in three dimensions beco…
We study the effect of disorder on the propagation of collective excitations in a disordered Bose superfluid. We incorporate local density depletion induced by strong disorder at the meanfield level, and formulate the transport of the excitations in terms of a screened scattering problem. We show that the competition of disorder, screening, and density depletion induces a strongly non-monotonic energy dependence of the disorder parameter. In three dimensions, it results in a rich localization diagram with four different classes of mobility spectra, characterized by either no or up to three mob…
We present a novel route to Bose-Einstein condensation devised for two-electron atoms, which do not admit practicable cooling techniques based upon narrow intercombination lines. A dipole trap for $^{40}$Ca atoms in the singlet ground state is loaded from a moderately cold source of metastable triplet atoms via spatially and energetically selective optical pumping permitting four orders of magnitude increase of the phase space density. Further cooling to quantum degeneracy is achieved by forced evaporation optimized to minimize three-body losses. In a combined loading and evaporation cycle of …
In an equilibrium three-dimensional (3D) disordered condensate, it's well established that disorder can generate an amount of normal fluid equaling to $\frac{4}{3}$ of the condensate depletion. The concept that the superfluid is more volatile to the existence of disorder than the condensate is crucial to the understanding of Bose glass phase. In this Letter, we show that, by bringing a weakly disordered 3D condensate to nonequilibrium regime via a quantum quench in the interaction, disorder can destroy superfluid significantly more, leading to a steady state in which the normal fluid density f…
We demonstrate a fast production of large 23Na Bose-Einstein condensates in an optically plugged, magnetic quadrupole trap. A single global minimum of the trapping potential is generated by slightly displacing the plug beam from the center of the quadrupole field. With a dark magneto-optical trap and a simple rf evaporation, our system produces a condensate with N = 10^7 atoms every 17 s. The Majorana loss rates and the resultant heating rates for various temperatures are measured with and without plugging. The average energy of a spin-flipped atom is almost linearly proportional to temperatur…
We investigate Hawking evaporation in a recently suggested picture in which black holes are Bose condensates of gravitons at a quantum critical point. There, evaporation of a black hole is due to two intertwined effects. Coherent excitation of a tachyonic breathing mode is responsible for the collapse of the condensate, while incoherent scattering of gravitons leads to Hawking radiation. To explore this, we consider a toy model of a single bosonic degree of freedom with derivative self-interactions. We consider the real-time evolution of a condensate and derive evaporation laws for two possibl…
We investigate a dilute Bose gas confined in a tight one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice plus a superimposed random potential at zero temperature. Accordingly, the ground state energy, quantum depletion and superfluid density are calculated. The presence of the lattice introduces a crossover to the quasi-2D regime, where we analyze asymptotically the 2D behavior of the system, particularly the effects of disorder. We thereby offer an analytical expression for the ground state energy of a purely 2D Bose gas in a random potential. The obtained disorder-induced normal fluid density $n_n$ and qua…
By generalizing the Green's function approach proposed by Beliaev [1, 2], we investigate the effect of quantum depletion on the energy spectra of elementary excitations in an F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, in particular, of 87Rb atoms in an external magnetic field. We find that quantum depletion increases the effective mass of magnons in the spin-wave excitations with quadratic dispersion relations. The enhancement factor turns out to be the same for both ferromagnetic and polar phases, and also independent of the magnitude of the external magnetic field. The lifetime of these magnons …
The low temperature unitary Bose gas is a fundamental paradigm in few-body and many-body physics, attracting wide theoretical and experimental interest. Here we first present a theoretical model that describes the dynamic competition between two-body evaporation and three-body re-combination in a harmonically trapped unitary atomic gas above the condensation temperature. We identify a universal magic trap depth where, within some parameter range, evaporative cooling is balanced by recombination heating and the gas temperature stays constant. Our model is developed for the usual three-dimension…
We consider a dilute homogeneous Bose gas with both an isotropic short-range contact interaction and an anisotropic long-range dipole-dipole interaction in a weak random potential at low temperature in three dimensions. Within the realm of Bogoliubov theory we analyze how both condensate and superfluid depletion are depleted due to quantum and thermal fluctuations as well as disorder fluctuations.
We developed functional integral formulation for the stripe phase of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The excitation spectrum is found to exhibit double gapless band structures, identified to be two Goldstone modes resulting from spontaneously broken internal gauge symmetry and translational invariance symmetry. The sound velocities display anisotropic behaviors with the lower branch vanishes in the direction perpendicular to the stripe in the x-y plane. At the transition point between the plane wave phase and the stripe phase, physical quantities such as flu…
We present a theoretical study of the quantum depletion of microcavity polaritons that are excited with a resonant laser pulse. The dynamics of the quantum fluctuations are interpreted in the context of quantum quenches in general and in terms of the dynamical Casimir effect in particular. We compute the time evolution of the first and second order correlation functions of the polariton condensate. Our theoretical modelling is based on the truncated Wigner approximation for interacting Bose gases. For homogeneous systems, analytical results are obtained in the linearised Bogoliubov approximati…
We describe interacting bosons at low temperature in spatially correlated random potentials. By a Bogoliubov expansion around the deformed mean-field condensate, the fundamental Hamiltonian for elementary excitations is derived, achieving an analytical formulation in the case of weak disorder. From this, we calculate the sound velocity and true zero-temperature condensate depletion in correlated disorder and all dimensions.
In this work, we study many-body excitations of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in periodic one-dimensional optical lattices. In particular, we investigate the impact of quantum depletion onto the structure of the low-energy spectrum and contrast the findings to the mean-field predictions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations. Accurate results for the many-body excited states are obtained by applying a linear-response theory atop the MCTDHB (multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method for bosons) equations of motion, termed LR-MCTDHB. We demonstrate for condensates in a t…
We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a 2D optical lattice in the presence of weak disorder within the framework of the Bogoliubov theory. In particular, we analyze the combined effects of disorder and an optical lattice on quantum fluctuations and superfluid density of the BEC system. Accordingly, the analytical expressions of the ground state energy and quantum depletion of the system are obtained. Our results show that the lattice still induces a characteristic 3D to 1D crossover in the behavior of quantum fluctuations, despite the presence of weak disorder. Furthermore, we u…
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate driven by periodic delta-kicks. In contrast to first-order descriptions, which predict rapid, unbounded growth of the noncondensate in resonant parameter regimes, the consistent treatment of condensate depletion in our fully-time-dependent, second-order description acts to damp this growth, leading to oscillations in the (non)condensate population and the coherence of the system.
We explain from first principles why satisfying conservation laws in Bose Einstein condensate dynamics requires many-body theory. For the Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field we show analytically and numerically that conservation laws are violated. We provide examples for angular momentum and linear momentum conservation. Arbitrarily large violations occur despite negligible depletion and interaction energy. For the case of angular momentum we show through extensive many-body simulations how the conservation law can be gradually restored on the many-body level. Implications are discussed.
We study the thermalization dynamics of an impurity cloud inside a Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature, introducing a suitable Boltzmann equation. Some values of the temperature and of the initial impurity energy are considered. We find that, below the Landau critical velocity, the macroscopic population of the initial impurity state reduces its depletion rate. For sufficiently high velocities the opposite effect occurs. For appropriate parameters the collisions cool the condensate. The maximum cooling per impurity atom is obtained with multiple collisions.
We study the quantum phase transition from the superfluid to the Mott insulator state in two and three dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with optical lattices using Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian within the Generalized Hatree-Fock-Bogoliubov (GHFB) approximation. The behavior of the depletion and the anomalous fraction has been investigated in the Mott insulator phase. We found that at T = 0, these quantities become significant in two and three dimensions. It is shown also that the dimensionality of the lattice enhances the anomalous density.
Quantum fluctuations play a central role in the properties of quantum matter. In non-interacting ensembles, they manifest as fluctuations of non-commuting observables, quantified by Heisenberg inequalities. In the presence of interactions, additional quantum fluctuations appear, from which many-body correlations and entanglement arise. In the context of many-body physics, the Bogoliubov theory provides us with an illuminating microscopic picture of how this occurs for weakly-interacting bosons, with the appearance of the quantum depletion formed by pairs of bosons with opposite momenta. Here, …
Motivated by recent experiments, we investigate the system of isotropically-interacting bosons with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. At the non-interacting level, there is a macroscopic ground-state degeneracy due to the many ways bosons can occupy the Rashba spectrum. Interactions treated at the mean-field level restrict the possible ground-state configurations, but there remains an accidental degeneracy not corresponding to any symmetry of the Hamiltonian, indicating the importance of fluctuations. By finding analytical expressions for the collective excitations in the long-wavelength limit and t…
We systematically investigate the properties of three-dimensional dipolar binary Bose mixture at low temperatures. A set of coupled self-consistent equations of motion are derived for the two condensates. In the homogeneous case, useful analytical formulas for the condensate depletion, the anomalous density, the ground-state energy, and the equation of state are obtained. The theory is extended to the inhomogeneous case and the importance of the inhomogeneity is highlighted. Our results open up a new avenue for studying dipolar mixture droplets. Impacts of the dipole-dipole interaction on the …
We present a combined computational and experimental study to optimize the efficiency of evaporative cooling for atoms in optical dipole traps. By employing a kinetic model of evaporation, we provide a strategy for determining the optimal relation between atom temperature, trap depth, and average trap frequency during evaporation given experimental initial conditions. We then experimentally implement a highly efficient evaporation process in an optical dipole trap, showing excellent agreement between the theory and experiment. This method has allowed the creation of pure Bose-Einstein condensa…
We study the effects of repulsive interaction and disorder on Bosons in a two-site Bose-Hubbard system, which provides a simple model of the dirty boson problem. By comparison with exact numerical results, we demonstrate how a straightforward application of the Bogoliubov approximation fails even to deliver a qualitatively correct picture: It wrongly predicts an increase of the condensate depletion due to disorder. We show that, in the presence of disorder, the noncommutative character of the condensate operator has to be retained for a correct description of the system.
We describe an experimental setup and the cooling procedure for producing 39K Bose-Einstein condensates of over 4x10^5 atoms. Condensation is achieved via a combination of sympathetic cooling with 87Rb in a quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration (QUIC) magnetic trap, and direct evaporation in a large volume crossed optical dipole trap, where we exploit the broad Feshbach resonance at 402 G to tune the 39K interactions from weak and attractive to strong and repulsive. In the same apparatus we create quasi-pure 87Rb condensates of over 8x10^5 atoms.
We consider two-component Bose-Einstein condensates subject to Weyl spin-orbit coupling. We obtain mean-field ground state phase diagram by variational method. In the regime where interspecies coupling is larger than intraspecies coupling, the system is found to be fully polarized and condensed at a finite momentum lying along the quantization axis. We characterize this phase by studying the excitation spectrum, the sound velocity, the quantum depletion of condensates, the shift of ground state energy, and the static structure factor. We find that spin-orbit coupling and interspecies coupling …
We study the possibility of using dark soliton in quasi one dimensional Bose Einstein condensates to produce two level system (qubits) by exploiting the intrinsic nonlinear and the coherent nature of the matter waves. We calculate the soliton spectrum and the conditions for a qubit to exist. We also compute the coupling between the phonons and the soliton and investigate the emission rate of the qubits in that case. Remarkably, the qubit lifetime is estimated to be of the order of a few seconds, being by the dark soliton "death" due to quantum evaporation.
We report Bose-Einstein condensation of two isotopes of the highly magnetic element dysprosium: 162Dy and 160Dy. For 162Dy, condensates with 10^5 atoms form below T = 50 nK. We find the evaporation efficiency for the isotope 160Dy to be poor; however, by utilizing a low-field Fano-Feshbach resonance to carefully change the scattering properties, it is possible to produce a Bose-Einstein condensate of 160Dy with 10^3 atoms. The 162Dy BEC reported is an order of magnitude larger in atom number than that of the previously reported 164Dy BEC, and it may be produced within 18 s.
We systematically study the effects of higher-order quantum and thermal fluctuations on the stabilization of self-bound droplets in Bose mixtures employing the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. We calculate the ground-state energy, the droplet equilibrium density, the depletion and anomalous density of the droplets as well as the critical temperature as a function of the relevant parameters. Our findings are compared with previous analytical predictions and diffusion Monte Carlo simulations. We employ our theory together with the local density approximation for quantum and thermal…
We investigate the dynamics of a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold atomic gases with a soft-core shape long-range interaction, which is induced by laser dressing the atoms to a highly excited Rydberg state. For a homogeneous condensate, the long-range interaction drastically alters the dispersion relation of the excitation, supporting both roton and maxon modes. Rotons are typically responsible for the creation of supersolids, while maxons are normally dynamically unstable in BECs with dipolar interactions. We show that maxon modes in the Rydberg-dressed condensate, on th…
We report on the production of a 41K-87Rb dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate in a hybrid trap, consisting of a magnetic quadrupole and an optical dipole potential. After loading both atomic species in the trap, we cool down 87Rb first by magnetic and then by optical evaporation, while 41K is sympathetically cooled by elastic collisions with 87Rb. We eventually produce two-component condensates with more than 10^5 atoms and tunable species population imbalance. We observe the immiscibility of the quantum mixture by measuring the density profile of each species after releasing them from the t…
While a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate has been experimentally observed, its elementary excitations remain unclear in the stripe phase. Here, we systematically study the elementary excitations in three distinct phases of a spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate. We find that the excitation spectrum as well as the corresponding static response function and structure factor depend strongly on spin-orbit coupling parameters such as the quadratic Zeeman field and the Rabi frequency. In the stripe phase, besides two gapless Goldstone modes, we show the existence of r…
We investigate magnetic solitons in an immiscible binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where the intraspecies interactions are slightly weaker than the interspecies interactions. While their density and phase profiles are analogous to dark-bright solitons, other characteristic properties such as velocities, widths, total density depletions, and in-trap oscillations are different. In the low velocity regime, a magnetic soliton reduces to a traveling pair of magnetic domain walls. Collisional behaviors of the solitons are also briefly discussed. We further demonstrate that these solitonic stat…
We show that a two-channel mean-field theory for a Bose gas near a Feshbach resonance allows for an analytic computation of the chemical potential, and therefore the universal constant β, at unitarity. To improve on this mean-field theory, which physically neglects condensate depletion, we study a variational Jastrow ansatz for the ground-state wave function and use the hypernetted-chain approximation to minimize the energy for all positive values of the scattering length. We also show that other important physical quantities such as Tan's contact and the condensate fraction can be directly ob…
The formulation for zero mode of a Bose-Einstein condensate beyond the Bogoliubov approximation at zero temperature [Y.Nakamura et al., Phys. Rev. A 89, 013613 (2014)] is extended to finite temperature. Both thermal and quantum fluctuations are considered in a manner consistent with a concept of spontaneous symmetry breakdown for a finite-size system. Therefore, we need a proper treatment of the zero mode operators, which invoke non-trivial enhancements in depletion condensate and thermodynamical quantities such as the specific heat. The enhancements are visible in the weak interaction case. O…
We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven optical superlattices. For a bichromatic lattice, each Bloch band split up into two minibands such that the dynamics is governed by the interplay of Bloch oscillations and transitions between the bands. Thus, bichromatic potentials provide an excellent model system for the study of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling and allow for a variety of applications in matter wave interferometry and quantum metrology. In the present paper we investigate the coherent dynamics of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate as well as its sta…
We present a fully comprehensive multi-mode quantum treatment based on the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA) to study many-body effects and quantum fluctuations on the formation of a discrete time crystal (DTC) in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) bouncing resonantly on an atom mirror, driven at period T. Our theoretical approach avoids the restrictions both of mean-field theory, where all bosons are assumed to remain in a single mode, and of time-dependent Bogoliubov theory, which assumes boson depletion from the condensate mode is small. For realistic initial conditions corresponding to a …
