We theoretically propose a finite-size quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with coherent source and drain placed at its two ends, which can in principle sustain a stationary sonic black hole with a single event horizon. Our analysis is focused on the condensate persistence against quantum fluctuations. We show that similar to white hole-black hole pairs, dynamical instabilities occur. Investigating in detail the instabilities' dependence on the system parameters, we also identify windows of formally infinite black hole lifetimes. By using quantum depletion of the condensate as a diagnostic tool, we validate the usage of Bogoliubov theory to describe the analogue Hawking process, and establish novel signatures of Hawking radiation in the depleted cloud, both inside and outside the event horizon.
We study the quantum fluctuations in a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate realizing an analogous acoustic black hole. The taking into account of evanescent channels and of zero modes makes it possible to accurately reproduce recent experimental measurements of the density correlation function. We discuss the determination of Hawking temperature and show that in our model the analogous radiation presents some significant departure from thermality.
Analogue gravity is based on the simple observation that perturbations propagating in several physical systems can be described by a quantum field theory in a curved spacetime. While phenomena like Hawking radiation are hardly detectable in astrophysical black holes, these effects may be experimentally tested in analogue systems. In this Thesis, focusing on Bose-Einstein condensates, we present our recent results about analogue models of gravity from three main perspectives: as laboratory tests of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, for the techniques that they provide to address various…
We have created an analogue of a black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate. In this sonic black hole, sound waves, rather than light waves, cannot escape the event horizon. A step-like potential accelerates the flow of the condensate to velocities which cross and exceed the speed of sound by an order of magnitude. The Landau critical velocity is therefore surpassed. The point where the flow velocity equals the speed of sound is the sonic event horizon. The effective gravity is determined from the profiles of the velocity and speed of sound. A simulation finds negative energy excitations, by mea…
We study dynamical processes in coherently coupled atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Josephson effects in ring-shaped and dumbbell geometries are theoretically investigated. Conditions for observation of the Josephson effect are revealed. We found that multicharged persistent current in toroidal condensate can be robust even for supersonic atomic flow. In numerical simulations the acoustic analogues of event horizon in quantized superflow was observed. These theoretical finding open perspectives for investigation of Bose Josephson junctions and quantum aspects of acoustic analogue of Hawking r…
Inspired by a recent experiment by Steinhauer and co-workers, we present a simple model which describes the formation of an acoustic black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate, allowing an analytical computation of the evolution in time of the corresponding density-density correlator. We show the emergence of analog Hawking radiation out of a "quantum atmosphere" region significantly displaced from the horizon. This is quantitatively studied both at $T=0$ and even in the presence of an initial temperature T, as is always the case experimentally.
We demonstrate theoretically that analogues of D-branes in string theory can be realized in rotating, phase-separated, two-component Bose-Einstein condensates and that they are observable using current experimental techniques. This study raises the possibility of simulating D-branes in the laboratory.
We investigate stability of non-equilibrium steady states of Bose-Einstein condensates with a local one-body loss in the presence of double potential barriers. We construct an exactly solvable mean-field model, in which the local loss and the potential barriers take the form of a delta function. Using the exact solutions of our model, we show that there are parameter regions in which two steady-state solutions are dynamically stable, i.e., the model exhibits bistability. We also find that unidirectional hysteresis phenomena appear when the local-loss rate is varied in some parameter region.
We study a dissipative Bose-Hubbard chain subject to an engineered bath using a superoperator approach based on matrix product operators. The dissipation is engineered to stabilize a BEC condensate wave function in its steady state. We then characterize the steady state emerging from the interplay between incompatible Hamiltonian and dissipative dynamics. While it is expected that interactions lead to this competition, even the kinetic energy in an open boundary condition setup competes with the dissipation, leading to a non-trivial steady state. We also present results for the transient dynam…
In this paper we propose to apply the analogy between gravity and condensed matter physics to relativistic Bose-Einstein condensates (RBECs), i.e. condensates composed by relativistic constituents. While such systems are not yet a subject of experimental realization, they do provide us with a very rich analogue model of gravity, characterized by several novel features with respect to their non-relativistic counterpart. Relativistic condensates exhibit two (rather than one) quasi-particle excitations, a massless and a massive one, the latter disappearing in the non-relativistic limit. We show t…
Using the coherent state functional integral expression of the partition function, we show that the sine-Gordon model on an analogue curved spacetime arises as the effective quantum field theory for phase fluctuations of a weakly imperfect Bose gas on an incompressible background superfluid flow when these fluctuations are restricted to a subspace of the single-particle Hilbert space. We consider bipartitions of the single-particle Hilbert space relevant to experiments on ultracold bosonic atomic or molecular gases, including, e.g., restriction to high- or low-energy sectors of the dynamics an…
Two effectively one-dimensional parallel coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of external potentials are studied. The system is modelled by linearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. In particular, grey-soliton-like solutions representing analogues of superconducting Josephson fluxons as well as coupled dark solitons are discussed. Theoretical approximations based on variational formulations are derived. It is found that the presence of a magnetic trap can destabilize the fluxon analogues. However, stabilization is possible by controlling the effective linear coupling between th…
The sonic analogue of Hawking radiation can now be experimentally recreated in Bose-Einstein Condensates that contain an acoustic black hole. In these experiments the signal strength and analogue Hawking temperature increase for denser condensates, which however also suffer increased atom losses from inelastic collisions. To determine how these affect analogue Hawking radiation, we numerically simulate creation of the latter in a Bose-Einstein Condensate in the presence of atomic losses. In particular we explore modifications of density-density correlations through which the radiation has been…
The Unruh effect predicts a thermal response for an accelerated detector moving through the vacuum. Here we propose an interferometric scheme to observe an analogue of the circular Unruh effect using a localized laser coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Quantum fluctuations in the condensate are governed by an effective relativistic field theory, and as demonstrated, the coupled laser field acts as an effective Unruh-DeWitt detector thereof. The effective speed of light is lowered by 12 orders of magnitude to the sound velocity in the BEC. For detectors traveling close to the sound sp…
We investigate quantum entanglement in an analogue black hole realized in the flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate. The system is described by a three-mode Gaussian state and we construct the corresponding covariance matrix at zero and finite temperature. We study associated bipartite and tripartite entanglement measures and discuss their experimental observation. We identify a simple optical setup equivalent to the analogue Bose-Einstein black hole which suggests a new way of determining the Hawking temperature and grey-body factor of the system.

The recent detections of gravitational waves (GWs) by the LIGO and Virgo collaborations have opened the field of GW astronomy, intensifying interest in GWs and other possible detectors sensitive in different frequency ranges. Although strong GW producing events are rare and currently unpredictable, GWs can in principle be simulated in analogue systems at will in the lab. Simulation of GWs in a manifestly quantum system would allow for the study of the interaction of quantum phenomena with GWs. Such predicted interaction is exploited in a recently proposed Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) based G…
We consider a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential, where the atoms are magnetically coupled to a single-mode of the microwave field inside a superconducting resonator. We find that the system has the different dark-state subspaces in the strong- and weak-tunneling regimes, respectively. In the limit of weak tunnel coupling, steady-state entanglement between the two spatially separated condensates can be generated by evolving to a mixture of dark states via the dissipation of the photon field. We show that the entanglement can be faithfully indicated by an entangle…
We study the properties of a $2+1$ dimensional Sonic black hole (SBH) that can be realised, in a quasi-two-dimensional two-component spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The corresponding equation for phase fluctuations in the total density mode that describes phonon field in the hydrodynamic approximation is described by a scalar field equation in $2+1$ dimension whose space-time metric is significantly different from that of the SBH realised from a single component BEC that was studied experimentally, and, theoretically meticulously in literature. Given the breakdown of the irr…
We explore prethermal Floquet steady states and instabilities of the weakly interacting two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model subject to periodic driving. We develop a description of the nonequilibrium dynamics, at arbitrary drive strength and frequency, using a weak-coupling conserving approximation. We establish the regimes in which conventional (zero-momentum) and unconventional [$(π,π)$-momentum] condensates are stable on intermediate time scales. We find that condensate stability is \emph{enhanced} by increasing the drive strength, because this decreases the bandwidth of quasiparticle excita…
We discuss the effect of dissipation on heating which occurs in periodically driven quantum many body systems. We especially focus on a periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model coupled to an energy and particle reservoir. Without dissipation, this model is known to undergo parametric instabilities which can be considered as an initial stage of heating. By taking the weak on-site interaction limit as well as the weak system-reservoir coupling limit, we find that parametric instabilities are suppressed if the dissipation is stronger than the on-site interaction strength and stable steady states ap…
We propose a possible experimental realization of a quantum analogue of Newton's cradle using a configuration which starts from a Bose-Einstein condensate. The system consists of atoms with two internal states trapped in a one dimensional tube with a longitudinal optical lattice and maintained in a strong Tonks-Girardeau regime at maximal filling. In each site the wave function is a superposition of the two atomic states and a disturbance of the wave function propagates along the chain in analogy with the propagation of momentum in the classical Newton's cradle. The quantum travelling signal i…
Collective modes propagating in a moving superfluid are known to satisfy wave equations in a curved space time, with a metric determined by the underlying superflow. We use the Keldysh technique in a curved space-time to develop a quantum geometric theory of fluctuations in superfluid hydrodynamics. This theory relies on a 'quantized' generalization of the two-fluid description of Landau and Khalatnikov, where the superfluid component is viewed as a quasi-classical field coupled to a normal component -- the collective modes/phonons representing a quantum bath. This relates the problem in the h…
We investigate the formation dynamics of sonic horizons in a Bose gas confined in a (quasi) one-dimensional trap. This system is one of the most promising realizations of the analogue gravity paradigm and has already been successfully studied experimentally. Taking advantage of the exact solution of the one-dimensional, hard-core, Bose model (Tonks-Girardeau gas) we show that, by switching on a step potential, either a sonic (black-hole-like) horizon or a black/white hole pair may form, according to the initial velocity of the fluid. Our simulations never suggest the formation of an isolated w…
Hawking radiation, the spontaneous emission of thermal photons from an event horizon, is one of the most intriguing and elusive predictions of field theory in curved spacetimes. A formally analogue phenomenon occurs at the supersonic transition of a fluid: in this respect, ultracold gases stand out among the most promising systems but the theoretical modelling of this effect has always been carried out in semiclassical approximation, borrowing part of the analysis from the gravitational analogy. Here we discuss the exact solution of a one-dimensional Bose gas flowing against an obstacle, showi…
We propose emulation of Hawking radiation (HR) by means of acoustic excitations propagating on top of persistent current in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in an annular confining potential. The setting is initially created as a spatially uniform one, and then switches into a nonuniform configuration, while maintaining uniform BEC density. The eventual setting admits the realization of sonic black and white event horizons with different slopes of the local sound speed. A smooth slope near the white-hole horizon suppresses instabilities in the supersonic region. It is found that…
We investigate the stability and critical velocity of a weakly interacting Bose gas flowing in a random potential. By applying the Bogoliubov theory to a disordered Bose system with a steady flow, the condensate density and the superfluid density are determined as functions of the disorder strength, flow velocity, and temperature. The critical velocity, at which the steady flow becomes unstable, is calculated from the spectrum of hydrodynamic excitation. We also show that in two dimensions the critical velocity strongly depends on the system size.
We study the nonequilibrium steady state of the Bose Hubbard model coupled to Lindblad reservoirs, using the density matrix renormalization group in operator space. We observe a transition from a flat particle density profile in the noninteracting limit to the linear profile with onset of the interparticle interaction. Analyzing the effect of coherent pumping on the nonequilibrium steady state we find a subspace which remains unaffected by the pumping in the noninteracting limit with the protection gradually diminishing due to interparticle interaction. In the equilibrium situation with one or…
Solid state quantum condensates often differ from previous examples of condensates (such as Helium, ultra-cold atomic gases, and superconductors) in that the quasiparticles condensing have relatively short lifetimes, and so as for lasers, external pumping is required to maintain a steady state. On the other hand, compared to lasers, the quasiparticles are generally more strongly interacting, and therefore better able to thermalise. This leads to questions of how to describe such non-equilibrium condensates, and their relation to equilibrium condensates and lasers. This chapter discusses in det…
We investigate the possibility to generate quantum-correlated quasi-particles utilizing analogue gravity systems. The quantumness of these correlations is a key aspect of analogue gravity effects and their presence allows for a clear separation between classical and quantum analogue gravity effects. However, experiments in analogue systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, and shallow water waves, are always conducted at non-ideal conditions, in particular, one is dealing with dispersive media at nonzero temperatures. We analyze the influence of the initial temperature on the entanglement ge…
The implementation of a combination of continuous weak measurement and classical feedback provides a powerful tool for controlling the evolution of quantum systems. In this work, we investigate the potential of this approach from three perspectives. First, we consider a double-well system in the classical large-atom-number limit, deriving the exact equations of motion in the presence of feedback. Second, we consider the same system in the limit of small atom number, revealing the effect that quantum fluctuations have on the feedback scheme. Finally, we explore the behavior of modest sized Hubb…
We present numerical analysis of steady states in a two-component (spinor) driven-dissipative quantum fluid formed by condensed exciton-polaritons in an annular optically induced trap. We demonstrate that an incoherent ring-shaped optical pump creating the exciton-polariton confinement supports the existence of stationary and rotating azimuthon steady states with azimuthally modulated density. Such states can be imprinted by coherent light pulses with a defined orbital angular momentum, as well as generated spontaneously in the presence of thermal noise.
We explore the dynamics of a resonant Bose gas following its quench to a strongly interacting regime near a Feshbach resonance. For such deep quenches, we utilize a self-consistent dynamic field approximation and find that after an initial regime of many-body Rabi-like oscillations between the condensate and finite-momentum quasiparticle pairs, at long times, the gas reaches a pre-thermalized nonequilibrium steady state. We explore the resulting state through its broad stationary momentum distribution function, that exhibits a power-law high momentum tail. We study the dynamics and steady-stat…
We analyze dynamics of the infinite-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with spatially inhomogeneous dissipation in the hardcore boson limit by solving the Lindblad master equation with use of the Gutzwiller variational method. We consider dissipation processes that correspond to inelastic light scattering in the case of Bose gases in optical lattices. We assume that the dissipation is applied to a half of lattice sites in a spatially alternating manner. We focus on steady states at which the system arrives after long-time evolution. We find that when the average particle density is varied, the ste…
The stability and chaotic behaviors of Bose-Einstein condensates with two- and three-atom interactions in optical lattices are discussed with analytical and numerical methods. It is found that the steady-state relative population appears tuning-fork bifurcation when the system parameters are changed to certain critical values. In particular, the existence of three-body interaction not only transforms the bifurcation point of the system but also affects greatly on the macroscopic quantum self-trapping behaviors of the system associated with the critically stable steady-state solution. In additi…
Yin and Radzihovsky [1] recently developed a self-consistent extension of a Bogoliubov theory, in which the condensate number density $n_c$ is treated as a mean field that changes with time, in order to analyze a JILA experiment by Makotyn et al. [2] on a $^{85}$Rb Bose gas following a deep quench to a large scattering length. We apply this theory to construct a closed set of equations that highlight the role of $\dot{n}_c$, which is to induce an effective interaction between quasiparticles. We show analytically that such a system supports a steady state characterized by a constant condensate …
We study the quench dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate under a Raman-assisted synthetic spin-orbit coupling. To model the dynamical process, we adopt a self-consistent Bogoliubov approach, which is equivalent to applying the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations. We investigate the dynamics of the condensate fraction as well as the momentum distribution of the Bose gas following a sudden change of system parameters. Typically, the system evolves into a steady state in the long-time limit, which features an oscillating momentum distribution and a stationary condensate fraction which…
We theoretically investigate a Bose-condensed exciton gas out of equilibrium. Within the framework of the combined BCS-Leggett strong-coupling theory with the non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism, we show how the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of excitons is suppressed to eventually disappear, when the system is in the non-equilibrium steady state. The supply of electrons and holes from the bath is shown to induce quasi-particle excitations, leading to the partial occupation of the upper branch of Bogoliubov single-particle excitation spectrum. We also discuss how this quasi-particle induction …
We investigate non-equilibrium steady states of driven-dissipative ideal quantum gases of both bosons and fermions. We focus on systems of sharp particle number that are driven out of equilibrium either by the coupling to several heat baths of different temperature or by time-periodic driving in combination with the coupling to a heat bath. Within the framework of (Floquet-)Born-Markov theory, several analytical and numerical methods are described in detail. This includes a mean-field theory in terms of occupation numbers, an augmented mean-field theory taking into account also non-trivial two…
Bose-Einstein condensates with balanced gain and loss can support stationary states despite the exchange of particles with the environment. In the mean-field approximation this is described by the PT-symmetric Gross-Pitaevskii equation with real eigenvalues. In this work we study the role of stationary states in the appropriate many-particle description. It is shown that without particle interaction there exist two non-oscillating trajectories which can be interpreted as the many-particle equivalent of the stationary PT-symmetric mean-field states. Furthermore the system has a non-equilibrium …
We investigate theoretically a one-dimensional ideal Bose gas that is driven into a steady state far from equilibrium via the coupling to two heat baths: a global bath of temperature $T$ and a "hot needle", a bath of temperature $T_h\gg T$ with localized coupling to the system. Remarkably, this system features a crossover to finite-size Bose condensation at temperatures $T$ that are orders of magnitude larger than the equilibrium condensation temperature. This counterintuitive effect is explained by a suppression of long-wavelength excitations resulting from the competition between both baths.…
We determined perturbatively the low-energy universal thermodynamics of dilute one-dimensional bosons with the three-body repulsive forces. The final results are presented for the limit of vanishing potential range in terms of three-particle scattering length. An analogue of Tan`s energy theorem for considered system is derived in generic case without assuming weakness of the interparticle interaction. We also obtained an exact identity relating the three-body contact to the energy density.
The quasiparticle content of a quantum field depends on the observer, in particular on its motional state, on the way the observer's detector couples to the quantum field, and on the frequency standard in which the detector carried by the observer measures the quanta to be detected. I review a procedure of making this fundamental property of quantum field theory experimentally manifest using quantum-optical means in Bose-Einstein condensates.
Rotational superradiance is one of the most fascinating phenomena in black-hole physics. Here, with the aim of probing quantum properties of superradiance in the lab, we investigate the interaction of the acoustic waves with quantum vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in the framework of dissipative mean-field model. We find the conditions of the acoustic-induced quantum phase slips in condensates with ring topology and discuss the possibility of observing an acoustic analogue of quantum superradiance in ultracold atomic gases.
We study the dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose gas after a sudden change of the interaction strength from zero to a finite value using the numerical time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm. It is shown that despite the integrability of the system, local quantities such as the two-particle correlation $g^{(2)}(x,x)$ attain steady state values in a short characteristic time inversely proportional to the Tonks parameter $γ$ and the square of the density. The asymptotic values are very close to those of a finite temperature grand canonical ensemble with a local temperature corresponding t…
We study the hydrodynamic forces acting on a small impurity moving in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate at non-zero temperature. The condensate is modelled by the damped-Gross Pitaevskii (dGPE) equation and the impurity by a Gaussian repulsive potential coupled to the condensate. For weak coupling, we obtain analytical expressions for the forces acting on the impurity, and compare them with those computed through direct numerical simulations of the dGPE and with the corresponding expressions for classical forces. For non-steady flows, there is a time-dependent force dominated by inert…
The system of a transversely pumped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) coupled to a lossy ring cavity can favor a supersolid steady state. Here we find the existence of supersolid gap soliton in such a driven-dissipative system. By numerically solving the mean-field atom-cavity field coupling equations, gap solitons of a few different families have been identified. Their dynamical properties, including stability, propagation and soliton collision, are also studied. Due to the feedback atom-intracavity field interaction, these supersolid gap solitons show numerous new features compared with the usu…
Thermo-optic interaction significantly differs from the usual particle-particle interactions in physics, as it is retarded in time. A prominent platform for realising this kind of interaction are photon Bose-Einstein condensates, which are created in dye-filled microcavities. The dye solution continually absorbs and re-emits these photons, causing the photon gas to thermalise and to form a Bose-Einstein condensate. Because of a non-ideal quantum efficiency, these cycles heat the dye solution, creating a medium that provides an effective thermo-optic photon-photon interaction. So far, only a me…
We obtain approximations for the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) and complex GP equation in two and three spatial dimensions by generalizing the divergence-free WKB method. The results include an explicit expression of a uniformly valid approximation for the condensate density of an ultracold Bose gas confined in a harmonic trap that extends into the classically forbidden region. This provides an accurate approximation of the condensate density that includes healing effects at leading order that are missing in the widely adopted Thomas-Fermi approximation. The results presented herein a…
We show that an elliptical obstacle moving through a Bose-Einstein condensate generates wakes of quantum vortices which resemble those of classical viscous flow past a cylinder or sphere. The role of ellipticity is to facilitate the interaction of the vortices nucleated by the obstacle. Initial steady symmetric wakes lose their symmetry and form clusters of like-signed vortices, in analogy to the classical Bénard-von Kármán vortex street. Our findings, demonstrated numerically in both two and three dimensions, confirm the intuition that a sufficiently large number of quanta of circulation repr…
External driving is emerging as a promising tool for exploring new phases in quantum systems. The intrinsically non-equilibrium states that result, however, are challenging to describe and control. We study the steady states of a periodically driven one-dimensional electronic system, including the effects of radiative recombination, electron-phonon interactions, and the coupling to an external fermionic reservoir. Using a kinetic equation for the populations of the Floquet eigenstates, we show that the steady-state distribution can be controlled using the momentum and energy relaxation pathway…
In an equilibrium three-dimensional (3D) disordered condensate, it's well established that disorder can generate an amount of normal fluid equaling to $\frac{4}{3}$ of the condensate depletion. The concept that the superfluid is more volatile to the existence of disorder than the condensate is crucial to the understanding of Bose glass phase. In this Letter, we show that, by bringing a weakly disordered 3D condensate to nonequilibrium regime via a quantum quench in the interaction, disorder can destroy superfluid significantly more, leading to a steady state in which the normal fluid density f…
Motivated by recent experiments, we analyse the stability of a three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in a periodically driven one-dimensional optical lattice. Such periodically driven systems do not have a thermodynamic ground state, but may have a long-lived steady state which is an eigenstate of a "Floquet Hamiltonian". We explore collisional instabilities of the Floquet ground state which transfer energy into the transverse modes. We calculate decay rates, finding that the lifetime scales as the inverse square of the scattering length and inverse of the peak three- dimensi…
