The main purpose of the paper is to provide a survey of our recent studies on soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. The classification is based on the far-field patterns of the solutions which consist of a finite number of line-solitons. Each soliton solution is then defined by a point of the totally non-negative Grassmann variety which can be parametrized by a unique derangement of the symmetric group of permutations. Our study also includes certain numerical stability problems of those soliton solutions. Numerical simulations of the initial value problems indicate that certain class of initial waves asymptotically approach to these exact solutions of the KP equation. We then discuss an application of our theory to the Mach reflection problem in shallow water. This problem describes the resonant interaction of solitary waves appearing in the reflection of an obliquely incident wave onto a vertical wall, and it predicts an extra-ordinary four-fold amplification of the wave at the wall. There are several numerical studies confirming the prediction, but all indicate disagreements with the KP theory. Contrary to those previous numerical studies, we find that the KP theory actually provides an excellent model to describe the Mach reflection phenomena when the higher order corrections are included to the quasi-two dimensional approximation. We also present laboratory experiments of the Mach reflection recently carried out by Yeh and his colleagues, and show how precisely the KP theory predicts this wave behavior.
This gives a survey of our recent studies on soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with an emphasis on the Mach reflection problem in shallow water.
In our paper we show that the Camassa-Holm equation does not represent a long wave asymptotic due to a major inconsistency with the theory of shallow water waves. We state that any solution of the Camassa-Holm equation, which is not asymptotically close to a solution of the Korteweg--de Vries equation is an artefact of the model and irrelevant to the theory of shallow water waves.
The main purpose of this paper is to give a survey of recent development on a classification of soliton solutions of the KP equation. The paper is self-contained, and we give a complete proof for the theorems needed for the classification. The classification is based on the Schubert decomposition of the real Grassmann manifold, Gr$(N,M)$, the set of $N$-dimensional subspaces in $\mathbb{R}^M$. Each soliton solution defined on Gr$(N,M)$ asymptotically consists of the $N$ number of line-solitons for $y\gg 0$ and the $M-N$ number of line-solitons for $y\ll 0$. In particular, we give the detailed …
The two-dimensional shallow water equations with a particular bottom and the Coriolis's force $f=f_{0}+Ωy$ are studied in this paper. The main goal of the paper is to describe all invariant solutions for which the reduced system is a system of ordinary differential equations. For solving the systems of ordinary differential equations we use the sixth-order Runge-Kutta method.

In classical shallow water wave (SWW) theory, there exist two integrable one-dimensional SWW equation [Hirota-Satsuma (HS) type and Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur (AKNS) type] in the Boussinesq approximation. In this paper, we mainly focus on the integrable SWW equation of AKNS type. The nonlocal symmetry in form of square spectral function is derived starting from its Lax pair. Infinitely many nonlocal symmetries are presented by introducing the arbitrary spectrum parameter. These nonlocal symmetries can be localized and the SWW equation is extended to enlarged system with auxiliary dependent var…
We carry out the group classification of the class of two-dimensional shallow water equations with variable bottom topography using an optimized version of the method of furcate splitting. The equivalence group of this class is found by the algebraic method. Using algebraic techniques, we construct additional point equivalences between some of the listed cases of Lie-symmetry extensions, which are inequivalent up to transformations from the equivalence group.
We analyze shallow water wind waves in Currituck Sound, North Carolina and experimentally confirm, for the first time, the presence of $soliton$ $turbulence$ in ocean waves. Soliton turbulence is an exotic form of nonlinear wave motion where low frequency energy may also be viewed as a $dense$ $soliton$ $gas$, described theoretically by the soliton limit of the Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation, a $completely$ $integrable$ $soliton$ $system$: Hence the phrase "soliton turbulence" is synonymous with "integrable soliton turbulence." For periodic/quasiperiodic boundary conditions the $ergodic$ $sol…
Zero curvature formulations, pseudo-potentials, modified versions, ``Miura transformations'', and nonlocal symmetries of the Korteweg--de Vries, Camassa-- Holm and Hunter--Saxton equations are investigated from an unified point of view: these three equations belong to a two--parameters family of equations ``describing pseudo-spherical surfaces'', and therefore their basic integrability properties can be studied by geometrical means.
A new parameterization of the Jacobi inversion problem is used along with the dynamics of the peaks to describe finite time interaction of peakon weak solutions of the Shallow Water equation.
The system of equations of one-dimensional shallow water over uneven bottom in Euler's and Lagrange's variables is considered. Intermediate system of equations is introduced. Hydrodynamic conservation laws of intermediate system of equations is used to find all first order conservation laws of shallow water equations in Lagrange's variable for all bottom profiles. The obtained conservation laws are compared with the hydrodynamic conservation laws of the system of equations of one-dimensional shallow water over uneven bottom in Euler's variables. Bottom profiles are given for which there are ad…
In this study, we propose an improved version of the nonlinear shallow water (or Saint-Venant) equations. This new model is designed to take into account the effects resulting from the large spacial and/or temporal variations of the seabed. The model is derived from a variational principle by choosing the appropriate shallow water ansatz and imposing suitable constraints. Thus, the derivation procedure does not explicitly involve any small parameter.
Using Levi-Civita's theory of ideal fluids, we derive the complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, describing the complex velocity of a shallow fluid up to first order. We use perturbation theory, and the long wave, slowly varying velocity approximations for shallow water. The complex KdV equation describes the nontrivial dynamics of all water particles from the surface to the bottom of the water layer. A crucial new step made in our work is the proof that a natural consequence of the complex KdV theory is that the wave elevation is described by the real KdV equation. The complex KdV approach…
Process of the nonlinear deformation of the surface wave in shallow water is studied. Main attention is paid to the relation between the Fourier-spectrum and wave steepness. It is shown that the spectral harmonics of the initially sine wave can be expressed through the wave steepness, and this is important for applications.
Extended shallow water wave equations are derived, using the method of asymptotic expansions, from the Euler (or water wave) equations. These extended models are valid one order beyond the usual weakly nonlinear, long wave approximation, incorporating all appropriate dispersive and nonlinear terms. Specifically, first we derive the extended Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, and then proceed with the extended Benjamin-Bona-Mahony and the extended Camassa-Holm equations in (1+1)-dimensions, the extended cylindrical KdV equation in the quasi-one dimensional setting, as well as the extended Kadomt…
Process of the nonlinear deformation of the shallow water wave in a basin of constant depth is studied. The characteristics of the first breaking are analyzed in details. The Fourier spectrum and steepness of the nonlinear wave is calculated. It is shown that spectral amplitudes can be expressed through the wave front steepness, and this can be used for practical estimations.
We study the existence and stability of periodic travelling-wave solutions for generalized Benjamin-Bona-Mahony and Camassa-Holm equations. To prove stability, we use the abstract results of Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss and the Floquet theory for periodic eigenvalue problems.
The integrable 3rd-order Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation emerges uniquely at linear order in the asymptotic expansion for unidirectional shallow water waves. However, at quadratic order, this asymptotic expansion produces an entire {\it family} of shallow water wave equations that are asymptotically equivalent to each other, under a group of nonlinear, nonlocal, normal-form transformations introduced by Kodama in combination with the application of the Helmholtz-operator. These Kodama-Helmholtz transformations are used to present connections between shallow water waves, the integrable 5th-ord…
Numerical simulations of the unidirectional random waves are performed within the Korteweg -de Vries equation to investigate the statistical properties of surface gravity waves in shallow water. Nonlinear evolution shows the relaxation of the initial state to the quasi-stationary state differs from the Gaussian distribution. Significant nonlinear effects lead to the asymmetry in the wave field with bigger crests amplitudes and increasing of large wave contribution to the total distribution, what gives the rise of the amplitude probability, exceeded the Rayleigh distribution. The spectrum shift…
We apply the version of the method of simplest equation called modified method of simplest equation for obtaining exact traveling wave solutions of a class of equations that contain as particular case a nonlinear PDE that models shallow water waves in viscous fluid (Topper-Kawahara equation). As simplest equation we use a version of the Riccati equation. We obtain two exact traveling wave solutions of equations from the studied class of equations and discuss the question of imposing boundary conditions on one of these solutions.
The interest in the Camassa-Holm equation inspired the search for various generalizations of this equation with interesting properties and applications. In this letter we deal with such a two-component integrable system of coupled equations. First we derive the system in the context of shallow water theory. Then we show that while small initial data develop into global solutions, for some initial data wave breaking occurs. We also discuss the solitary wave solutions. Finally, we present an explicit construction for the peakon solutions in the short wave limit of system.
In this paper, using the standard truncated Painleve analysis, the Schwartzian equation of (2+1)-dimensional generalised variable coefficient shallow water wave (SWW)equation is obtained. With the help of lax pairs, nonlocal symmetries of the SWW equation are constructed which be localized by a complicated calculation process. Furthermore, using the Lie point symmetries of the closed system and Schwartzian equation, some exact interaction solutions are obtained, such as soliton-cnoidal wave solutions. Corresponding 2D and 3D figures are placed on illustrate dynamic behavior of the generalised …
We study the maximum wave amplitude produced by line-soliton interactions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation, and we discuss a mechanism of generation of large amplitude shallow water waves by multi-soliton interactions of KPII. We also describe a method to predict the possible maximum wave amplitude from asymptotic data. Finally, we report on numerical simulations of multi-soliton complexes of the KPII equation which verify the robustness of all types of soliton interactions and web-like structure.
The generation of an undular bore in the vicinity of a wave-breaking point is considered for the integrable Kaup-Boussinesq shallow water system. In the framework of the Whitham modulation theory, an analytic solution of the Gurevich-Pitaevskii type of problem for a generic "cubic" breaking regime is obtained using a generalized hodograph transform, and a further reduction to a linear Euler-Poisson equation. The motion of the undular bore edges is investigated in detail.
