We construct a finite subgroup of Brauer-Manin obstruction for detecting the existence of integral points on integral models of homogeneous spaces of linear algebraic groups of multiplicative type. As application, the strong approximation theorem for linear algebraic groups of multiplicative type is established. Moreover, the sum of two integral squares over some quadratic fields is discussed.

The purpose of this paper is to study fields whose multiplicative groups admit the structure of linear spaces. We prove that the multiplicative group of a finite field is a linear space if and only if the order of the multiplicative group is 1, 2, or a Mersenne prime. We give necessary conditions for the multiplicative group of an infinite field to be a linear space over another field. We also construct an example of an infinite field whose multiplicative group is a linear space over $\mathbb{Q}$.
We formulate, and provide strong evidence for, a natural generalization of a conjecture of Robert Coleman concerning Euler systems for the multiplicative group over arbitrary number fields.
In an earlier paper, we determined the finite fields with indecomposable multiplicative groups and conjectured that there is no infinite field whose multiplicative group is indecomposable. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for several popular classes of fields, including finitely generated fields, discrete valued fields, fields of Hahn series, local fields, global fields, and function fields.
We generalize Gel'fond's transcendence criterion to the context of a sequence of polynomials whose first derivatives take small values on large subsets of a fixed subgroup of the multiplicative group C* of the field of complex numbers.
A characterization of multiplicative (and additive) arithmetical functions is given. Using this characterization, we show that the group of multiplicative arithmetical functions is isomorphic to the group of additive arithmetical functions.
Let $G$ be a multiplicative subgroup of the prime field $\mathbb F_p$ of size $|G|> p^{1-κ}$ and $r$ an arbitrarily fixed positive integer. Assuming $κ=κ(r)>0$ and $p$ large enough, it is shown that any proportional subset $A\subset G$ contains non-trivial arithmetic progressions of length $r$. The main ingredient is the Szemerédi-Green-Tao theorem.
In this paper, we construct a higher rank Euler system for the multiplicative group over a totally real field by using the Iwasawa main conjecture proved by Wiles. A key ingredient of the construction is to generalize the notion of the characteristic ideal. Under certain technical assumptions, we prove that all higher Fitting ideals of a certain $p$-ramified Iwasawa module are described by analytic invariants canonically associated with Stickelberger elements.
Rescaled Mellin-type transforms of the exponential functional of the Bourgade-Kuan-Rodgers statistic of Riemann zeroes are conjecturally related to the distribution of the total mass of the limit lognormal stochastic measure of Mandelbrot-Bacry-Muzy. The conjecture implies that a non-trivial, log-infinitely divisible probability distribution is associated with Riemann zeroes. For application, integral moments, covariance structure, multiscaling spectrum, and asymptotics associated with the exponential functional are computed in closed form using the known meromorphic extension of the Selberg i…
Let K be a field of positive characteristic. When V is a linear variety in K^n and G is a finitely generated subgroup of K^*, we show how to compute the intersection of V and G^n effectively using heights. We calculate all the estimates explicitly. A special case provides the effective solution of the S-unit equation in n variables.
We describe a refinement of the general theory of higher rank Euler, Kolyvagin and Stark systems in the setting of the multiplicative group over arbitrary number fields. We use the refined theory to prove new results concerning the Galois structure of ideal class groups and the validity of both the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture and of the `refined class number formula' that has been conjectured by Mazur and Rubin and by Sano. In contrast to previous work in this direction, these results require no hypotheses on the decomposition behaviour of places that are intended to rule out the ex…
Let $K$ be a number field, and let $G\subset K^\times$ be a finitely generated subgroup. Fix some prime number $\ell$, and consider the set of primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ satisfying the following property: the reduction of $G$ modulo $\mathfrak{p}$ is well-defined and has size coprime to $\ell$. We give a closed--form expression for the density of this set.
Let K be a field of characteristic 0 and let n be a natural number. Let Gamma be a subgroup of the multiplicative group $(K^\ast)^n$ of finite rank r. Given $A_2,...,a_n\in K^\ast$ write $A(a_1,...,a_n,Γ)$ for the number of solutions x=(x_1,...,x_n)\in Γ$ of the equation a_1x_1+...+a_nx_n=1$, such that no proper subsum of $a_1x_1+...+a_nx_n$ vanishes. We derive an explicit upper bound for $A(a_1,...,a_n,Γ)$ which depends only on the dimension n and on the rank r.
We establish lower bounds on the rank of matrices in which all but the diagonal entries lie in a multiplicative group of small rank. Applying these bounds we show that the distance sets of finite pointsets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ generate high rank multiplicative groups and that multiplicative groups of small rank cannot contain large sumsets.
We examine two counting problems that seem very group-theoretic on the surface but, on closer examination, turn out to concern integers with restrictions on their prime factors. First, given an odd prime $q$ and a finite abelian $q$-group $H$, we consider the set of integers $n\le x$ such that the Sylow $q$-subgroup of the multiplicative group $(\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z)^\times$ is isomorphic to $H$. We show that the counting function of this set of integers is asymptotic to $K x(\log\log x)^\ell/(\log x)^{1/(q-1)}$ for explicit constants $K$ and $\ell$ depending on $q$ and $H$. Second, we conside…
The multiplicative group of a finite field is well known to be cyclic; in this note, we determine the finite fields whose multiplicative groups are direct sum indecomposable. We obtain our classification using a direct argument and also as a corollary to Catalan's Conjecture. Turning to infinite fields, we prove that any infinite field whose characteristic is not equal to 2 must have a decomposable multiplicative group. We conjecture that this is also true for infinite fields of characteristic 2 and we narrow the class of possible counter-examples. Finally, using the classification of finite c…
We generalize the absolute logarithmic Weil height from elements of the multiplicative group of algebraic numbers modulo torsion, to finitely generated subgoups. The height of a finitely generated subgroup is shown to equal the volume of a certain naturally occurring, convex, symmetric subset of Euclidean space. This connection leads to a bound on the norm of integer vectors that give multiplicative dependencies among finite sets of algebraic numbers.
The purpose of this article is to describe explicitly the polylogarithm class in absolute Hodge cohomology of a product of multiplicative groups, in terms of the Bloch-Wigner-Ramakrishnan polylogarithm functions. We will use the logarithmic Dolbeault complex defined by Burgos to calculate the corresponding absolute Hodge cohomology groups.
We study multiplicative dependence between elements in orbits ofalgebraic dynamical systems over number fields modulo a finitely generated multiplicative subgroup of the field. We obtain a series of results, many of which may be viewed as a blend of Northcott's theorem on boundedness of preperiodic points and Siegel's theorem on finiteness of solutions to $S$-unit equations.
In this paper we explore the concept of {\em good heredity} for fields from a group theoretic perspective. Extending results from \cite{alice}, we show that several natural families of fields are of good heredity, and some others are not. We also construct several examples to show that various wishful thinking expectations are not true.
We describe explicit multiplicative excellent families of rational elliptic surfaces with Galois group isomorphic to the Weyl group of the root lattices E_7 or E_8. The Weierstrass coefficients of each family are related by an invertible polynomial transformation to the generators of the multiplicative invariant ring of the associated Weyl group, given by the fundamental characters of the corresponding Lie group. As an application, we give examples of elliptic surfaces with multiplicative reduction and all sections defined over Q for most of the entries of fiber configurations and Mordell-Weil…
We study the action of the multiplicative group generated by two prime numbers in $\mathbf{Z}/Q\mathbf{Z}$. More specifically, we study returns to the set $([-Q^\varepsilon,Q^\varepsilon]\cap \mathbf{Z})/Q\mathbf{Z}$. This is intimately related to the problem of bounding the greatest common divisor of $S$-unit differences, which we revisit. Our main tool is the $S$-adic subspace theorem.
Hambly, Keevash, O'Connell and Stark have proven a central limit theorem for the characteristic polynomial of a permutation matrix with respect to the uniform measure on the symmetric group. We generalize this result in several ways. We prove here a central limit theorem for multiplicative class functions on symmetric group with respect to the Ewens measure and compute the covariance of the real and the imaginary part in the limit. We also estimate the rate of convergence with the Wasserstein distance.
We show that an arithmetic function which satisfies some weak multiplicativity properties and in addition has a non-decreasing or $\log$-uniformly continuous normal order is close to a function of the form $n\mapsto n^c$. As an application we show that a finitely generated, residually finite, infinite group, whose normal growth has a non-decreasing or a $\log$-uniformly continuous normal order is isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}, +)$.
This paper surveys and develops links between polynomial invariants of finite groups, factorization theory of Krull domains, and product-one sequences over finite groups. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the multiplicative ideal theory of invariant rings, and connections between the Noether number and the Davenport constants of finite groups.
Let $G$ and $N$ be two finite groups of the same order. It is well-known that the existences of the following are equivalent: (a) a Hopf-Galois structure of type $N$ on any Galois $G$-extension; (b) a skew brace with additive group $N$ and multiplicative group $G$; (c) a regular subgroup isomorphic to $G$ in the holomorph of $N$. We shall say that $(G,N)$ is realizable when any of the above exists. Fixing $N$ to be a cyclic group, W. Rump (2019) has determined the groups $G$ for which $(G,N)$ is realizable. In this paper, fixing $G$ to be a cyclic group instead, we shall give a complete charac…
Our results concern analytic functions on the open unit $p$-adic poly-disc in $\mathbb{C}^n_p$ centered at the multiplicative unit and we prove that such functions only vanish at finitely many $n$-tuples of roots of unity $(ζ_1-1,\ldots,ζ_n-1)$ unless they vanish along a translate of the formal multiplicative group. For polynomial functions, this follows from the multiplicative Manin-Mumford conjecture. However we allow for a much wider class of analytic functions; in particular we establish a rigidity result for formal tori. Moreover, our methods apply to Lubin-Tate formal groups beyond just …
We construct classes of permutation polynomials over F_{Q^2} by exhibiting classes of low-degree rational functions over F_{Q^2} which induce bijections on the set of (Q+1)-th roots of unity in F_{Q^2}. As a consequence, we prove two conjectures about permutation trinomials from a recent paper by Tu, Zeng, Hu and Li.
