The influence of the spin-orbit interactions on the energy spectrum of two-electron laterally coupled quantum dots is investigated. The effective Hamiltonian for a spin qubit pair proposed in F. Baruffa et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 126401 (2010) is confronted with exact numerical results in single and double quantum dots in zero and finite magnetic field. The anisotropic exchange Hamiltonian is found quantitatively reliable in double dots in general. There are two findings of particular practical importance: i) The model stays valid even for maximal possible interdot coupling (a single dot), due to the absence of a coupling to the nearest excited level, a fact following from the dot symmetry. ii) In a weak coupling regime, the Heitler-London approximation gives quantitatively correct anisotropic exchange parameters even in a finite magnetic field, although this method is known to fail for the isotropic exchange. The small discrepancy between the analytical model (which employes the linear Dresselhaus and Bychkov-Rashba spin-orbit terms) and the numerical data for GaAs quantum dots is found to be mostly due to the cubic Dresselhaus term.
Coulomb interaction among electrons is found to have profound effects on the electronic properties of anisotropic quantum dots in a perpendicular external magnetic field, and in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. This is more evident in optical transitions, which we find in this system to be highly anisotropic and super-intense, in particular, for large values of the anisotropy parameter.
We have developed a theory of the one-phonon intraband resonance Raman scattering (IRRS) in anisotropic quantum dots subjected to an arbitrarily directed magnetic field. The differential Raman cross section is obtained. The resonance structure of the Raman cross section is studied. It is shown that the quantum dot subjected in a magnetic field can be used as the detector of phonon modes. The interesting multiplet structure of the resonance peaks is studied.
We have studied the absorption of electromagnetic radiation of an anisotropic quantum dot taking into account the spin-flip processes that is associated with the interaction of the electrons with optical phonons. It is shown that these processes lead to the resonance absorption. Explicit formula is derived for the absorption coefficient. The positions of the resonances peaks are found.
The effects of spin-orbit coupling on the two-electron spectra in lateral coupled quantum dots are investigated analytically and numerically. It is demonstrated that in the absence of magnetic field the exchange interaction is practically unaffected by spin-orbit coupling, for any interdot coupling, boosting prospects for spin-based quantum computing. The anisotropic exchange appears at finite magnetic fields. A numerically accurate effective spin Hamiltonian for modeling spin-orbit-induced two-electron spin dynamics in the presence of magnetic field is proposed.
We experimentally determine isotropic and anisotropic g-factor corrections in lateral GaAs single-electron quantum dots. We extract the Zeeman splitting by measuring the tunnel rates into the individual spin states of an empty quantum dot for an in-plane magnetic field with various strengths and directions. We quantify the Zeeman energy and find a linear dependence on the magnetic field strength which allows us to extract the g-factor. The measured g-factor is understood in terms of spin-orbit interaction induced isotropic and anisotropic corrections to the GaAs bulk g-factor. Because this imp…
The absorption of electromagnetic radiation of an anisotropic quantum dot is theoretically investigated taking into account the processes associated with simultaneous scattering from ionized impurities. It is shown that the scattering of electrons by impurities leads to the resonance absorption even if we have only one impurity in the quantum dot. Explicit formula is derived for the absorption coefficient. The positions of the resonances peaks are found. The effects of external magnetic field on the resonance absorption are studied.
We study the anisotropic orbital effect in the electric field tunability of the phonon induced spin-flip rate in quantum dots (QDs). Our study shows that anisotropic gate potential enhances the spin-flip rate and reduces the level crossing point to a lower quantum dot radius due to the suppression of the Land$\acute{e}$ g-factor towards bulk crystal. In the range of $10^4-10^6$ V/cm, the electric field tunability of the phonon induced spin-flip rate can be manipulated through strong Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. These results might assist the development of a spin based solid state quantum …
We propose a fast optically induced two-qubit \textsc{c-phase} gate between two resident spins in a pair of coupled quantum dots. An excited bound state which extends over the two dots provides an effective electron-electron exchange interaction. The gate is made possible by the electron-hole exchange interaction, which isolates a single transition in the system. When combined with appropriate single qubit rotations, this gate generates an entangled state of the two spins.
We reexamine the tunneling density of states in quantum dots and nanoparticles within the model which is extension of the universal Hamiltonian to the case of uniaxial anisotropic exchange. We derive the exact analytical result for the tunneling density of states in the case of arbitrary single-particle energy spectrum. We find that, similar to the case of the isotropic exchange, the tunneling density of states as a function of energy has the maximum due to a finite value of the total spin of the ground state near the Stoner instability. We demonstrate that there are no additional extrema whic…
We study the effect of elastic anisotropic biaxial strain on the light emitted by neutral excitons confined in different kinds of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). We find that the light polarization rotates by up to 80 degree and the excitonic fine structure splitting varies by several tens of $μ$eVs as the strain is varied. By means of a continuum model we mainly ascribe the observed effects to substantial changes of the hole wave function. These results show that strain-fields of a few permill magnitude are suffcient to dramatically modify the electronic structure of QDs.
In this paper, a detailed analysis of anisotropic effects on the phonon induced spin relaxation rate in III-V semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is carried out. We show that the accidental degeneracy due to level crossing between the first and second excited states of opposite electron spin states in both isotropic and anisotropic QDs can be manipulated with the application of externally applied gate potentials. In particular, anisotropic gate potentials enhance the phonon mediated spin-flip rate and reduce the cusp-like structure to lower magnetic fields, in addition to the lower QDs radii in I…
We present a comprehensive photoluminescence study of exchange interaction in self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. We exploit the presence of multiple charge states in the photoluminescence spectra of single quantum dots to analyze simultaneously fine structure of different excitonic transitions, including recombination of neutral exciton/biexciton, doubly charged negative exciton and negatively charged biexciton. We demonstrate that the fine structure results from electron-hole exchange interaction and that spin Hamiltonians with effective exchange constants $δ_i$ can provide a good descrip…
We study the effect of the exchange interaction on the Coulomb blockade peak height statistics in chaotic quantum dots. Because exchange reduces the level repulsion in the many body spectrum, it strongly affects the fluctuations of the peak conductance at finite temperature. We find that including exchange substantially improves the description of the experimental data. Moreover, it provides further evidence of the presence of high spin states (S>1) in such systems.
Carrier-dopant exchange interactions in Mn-doped PbS colloidal quantum dots were studied by circularly polarized magneto-photoluminescence. Mn substitutional doping leads to paramagnetic behavior down to 5 K. While undoped quantum dots show negative circular polarization, Mn doping changes its sign to positive. A circular polarization value of 40% was achieved at T=7 K and B=7 tesla. The results are interpreted in terms of Zeeman splitting of the band edge states in the presence of carrier-dopant exchange interactions that are qualitatively different from the s,p-d exchange interactions in II-…
It has been experimentally shown that negative exchange interactions can arise in a linear three-dot system when a two-electron double quantum dot is exchange coupled to a larger quantum dot containing on the order of one hundred electrons. The origin of this negative exchange can be traced to the larger quantum dot exhibiting a spin triplet-like rather than singlet-like ground state. Here, we show using a microscopic model based on the configuration interaction (CI) method that both triplet-like and singlet-like ground states are realized depending on the number of electrons. In the case of o…
We report simple expressions for the exchange coupling in double quantum dots calculated within the Heitler-London and the Hund-Mulliken approximations using four different confining potentials. At large interdot distances and at large magnetic fields the exchange coupling does not depend significantly on the details of the potentials. In contrast, at low fields and short distances different behaviors of the exchange coupling can be attributed to particular features of the potentials. Our results may be useful as guidelines in numerical studies and in the modeling of experiments.
Coupled elliptic quantum dots with different aspect ratios containing up to two electrons are studied using a model confinement potential in the presence of magnetic fields. Single and two particle Schroedinger equations are solved using numerical exact diagonolization to obtain the exchange energy and chemical potentials. As the ratio between the confinement strengths in directions perpendicular and parallel to the coupling direction of the double dots increases, the exchange energy at zero magnetic field increases, while the magnetic field of the singlet-triplet transition decreases. By inve…
We calculate spin relaxation rates in lateral quantum dot systems due to electron exchange between dots and leads. Using rate equations, we develop a theoretical description of the experimentally observed electric current in the spin blockade regime of double quantum dots. Single expression fits the entire current profile and describes the structure of both the conduction peaks and of the suppressed (`valley') region. Extrinsic rates calculated here have to be taken into account for accurate extraction of intrinsic relaxation rates due to the spin-orbit and hyperfine spin scattering mechanisms…
We study exchange coupling in Si double quantum dots, which have been proposed as suitable candidates for spin qubits due to their long spin coherence times. We discuss in detail two alternative schemes which have been proposed for implementing spin qubits in quantum dots. One scheme uses spin states in a single dot and the interdot exchange coupling controls interactions between unbiased dots. The other scheme employs the singlet and triplet states of a biased double dot as the two-level system making up the qubit and exchange controls the energy splitting of the levels. Exchange in these two…
We show theoretically that arbitrary coherent rotations can be performed quickly (with a gating time ~1 ns) and with high fidelity on the spin of a single confined electron using control of exchange only, without the need for spin-orbit coupling or ac fields. We expect that implementations of this scheme would achieve gate error rates on the order of η~ 10^{-3} in GaAs quantum dots, within reach of several known error-correction protocols
We study the variation in the Land$\acute{\text{e}}$ g-factor of electron spins induced by both anisotropic gate potentials and magnetic fields in InAs quantum dots for possible implementation towards solid state quantum computing. In this paper, we present analytical expressions and numerical simulations of the variation in the Land$\acute{\text{e}}$ g-factor for both isotropic and anisotropic quantum dots. Using both analytical techniques and numerical simulations, we show that the Rashba spin-orbit coupling has a major contribution in the variation of the g-factor with electric fields befor…
We study the exchange interaction between two hole-spin qubits in a double quantum dot setup in a silicon nanowire in the presence of magnetic and electric fields. Based on symmetry arguments we show that there exists an effective spin that is conserved even in highly anisotropic semiconductors, provided that the system has a twofold symmetry with respect to the direction of the applied magnetic field. This finding facilitates the definition of qubit basis states and simplifies the form of exchange interaction for two-qubit gates in coupled quantum dots. If the magnetic field is applied along …
We present an experimental study of electron-electron exchange interaction in self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots based on the photoluminescence measurements. The character and strength of this interaction are obtained by simultaneous observation of various recombination channels of a doubly negatively charged exciton, including previously unrecognized emission lines related to the electron-singlet configuration in the final state. A typical value of the electron singlet-triplet splitting, which corresponds to the exchange integral of electron-electron interaction, has been determined as 20.…
We study the effect of Coulomb correlation on the emission properties of the ground state exciton in zincblende CdSe/ZnS core-shell and in wurtzite ZnO quantum dots. We validate our theory model by comparing results of computed exciton energies of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots to photoluminescence and scanning near-field optical microscopy measurements. We use that to estimate the diameter of the quantum dots using a simple model based on infinitely deep quantum well and compare the results with the statistics of the atomic force microscopy scans of CdSe/ZnS dots, obtaining excellent agreement. Therea…
The charge stability diagram for two coupled quantum dots containing up to two electrons is computed in magnetic fields. One- and two-particle Schroedinger equations are solved by exact diagonalization to obtain the chemical potentials and exchange energy in these systems. By analyzing the chemical potentials variation with external biases and magnetic fields, it is possible to distinguish between the weak and strong inter-dot couplings. The variation of the chemical potential curvatures and the double-triple point separations in the stability diagrams confirms the inter-dot coupling decrease …
We have measured the Zeeman splitting of quantum levels in few-electron quantum dots (QDs) formed in narrow bandgap InSb nanowires via the Schottky barriers at the contacts under application of different spatially orientated magnetic fields. The effective g-factor tensor extracted from the measurements is strongly anisotropic and level-dependent, which can be attributed to the presence of strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and asymmetric quantum confinement potentials in the QDs. We have demonstrated a successful determination of the principal values and the principal axis orientations of the…
A two-electron system confined in two coupled semiconductor quantum dots is investigated as a candidate for performing quantum logic operations on spin qubits. We study different processes of swapping the electron spins by controlled switching on/off the exchange interaction. The resulting spin swap corresponds to an elementary operation in quantum information processing. We perform a direct time evolution simulations of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation. Our results show that -- in order to obtain the full interchange of spins -- the exchange interaction should change smoothly in time.…
We theoretically investigate the properties of a two-electron system confined in the three-dimensional potential of coupled quantum dots formed in a quantum wire. For this purpose, we implement a variational Heitler-London method that minimize the system energies with respect to variational parameters in electron trial wavefunctions. We find that tunneling and exchange couplings exponentially decay with increasing inter-dot distance and inter-dot barrier height. In the quasi-one-dimensional limit achieved by reducing the wire diameter, we find that the overlap between the dots decreases, which…
Nanoantenna enhanced ultrafast emission from colloidal quantum dots as quantum emitters is required for fast quantum communications. On chip integration of such devices require a scalable and high throughput technology. We report self-assembly lithography technique of preparing hybrid of gold-nanorods antenna over a com- pact CdSe quantum dot monolayer. We demonstrate resonant and off resonant gold nanorod antenna enhanced radiative and anisotropic decay. Extensive simulations explain the mechanism of the decay rates and the role of antenna in both random and a compact monolayer of quantum dot…
We study theoretically phonon-assisted spin relaxation of an electron confined in an elliptical quantum dot (QD) subjected to a tilted magnetic field. In the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit terms, the relaxation rate is anisotropic with respect to the in-plane field orientation. This anisotropy originates from the interference, at nonzero tilt angle, between the two spin-orbit terms. We show that, in a narrow range of magnetic field orientations, the relaxation rate exhibits anomalous sensitivity to variations of the QD parameters. In this range, the relative change in the r…
The presence of degenerate conduction band valleys and how they are mixed by interfaces play critical roles in determining electron interaction and spectrum in a silicon nanostructure. Here we investigate how the valley phases affect the exchange interaction in a symmetric two-electron silicon double quantum dot. Through a configuration interaction calculation, we find that exchange splitting is suppressed at a finite value of valley phase difference between the two dots, and reaches its minimum value ({\sim} 0) when the phase difference is π. Such a suppression can be explained using the Hubb…
We study electron-electron interaction effects in the thermodynamic properties of quantum-dot systems. We obtain the direct and exchange contributions to the specific heat C_v in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation at finite temperatures. An exchange-induced phase transition is observed and the transition temperature is shown to be inversely proportional to the size of the system. The exchange contribution to C_v dominates over the direct and kinetic contributions in the intermediate regime of interaction strength (r_s ~ 1). Furthermore, the electron-electron interaction modifies bo…
We have investigated few-body states in vertically stacked quantum dots. Due to small inter-dot tunneling rate, the coupling in our system is in a previously unexplored regime where electron-hole exchange is the dominant spin interaction. By tuning the gate bias, we are able to turn this coupling off and study a complementary regime where total electron spin is a good quantum number. The use of differential transmission allows us to obtain unambiguous signatures of the interplay between electron and hole spin interactions. Small tunnel coupling also enables us to demonstrate all-optical charge…
We present measurements on gate-defined double quantum dots in Ge-Si core-shell nanowires, which we tune to a regime with visible shell filling in both dots. We observe a Pauli spin blockade and can assign the measured leakage current at low magnetic fields to spin-flip cotunneling, for which we measure a strong anisotropy related to an anisotropic g-factor. At higher magnetic fields we see signatures for leakage current caused by spin-orbit coupling between (1,1)-singlet and (2,0)-triplet states. Taking into account these anisotropic spin-flip mechanisms, we can choose the magnetic field dire…
Spin relaxation in undoped quasi-spherical CdS quantum dots at zero magnetic fields is investigated using time- and polarization-resolved transient absorption measurements. Unlike in previous studies of these systems, the measured signals were corrected for spin-insensitive contributions to the exciton bleaching dynamics, {allowing us to determine} the pure spin-related exciton dynamics. To explain the observed room-temperature spin-relaxation time of several nanoseconds, we propose a novel mechanism based on intralevel exciton transitions with the emission of one LO phonon, the absorption of …
We explore the effect of single-particle level fluctuations on the Stoner instability in a QD with a strong spin-orbit coupling in the framework of the universal Hamiltonian with the Ising exchange interaction. We reduce the problem to studying the statistics of extrema of a certain Gaussian process and demonstrate that, in spite of the randomness of the single-particle levels, the longitudinal spin susceptibility and all its moments diverge simultaneously at the point of the Stoner instability which is determined by the standard criterion involving the mean level spacing only.
In the semi-conductor double quantum dot singlet-triplet qubit architecture, the decoherence caused by the qubit's charge environment poses a serious obstacle in the way towards large scale quantum computing. The effects of the charge decoherence can be mitigated by operating the qubit in the so called sweet spot regions where it is insensitive to electrical noise. In this paper, we propose singlet-triplet qubits based on two quantum dots of different sizes. Such asymmetric double dot systems allow the implementation of exchange gates with controllable exchange splitting $J$ operated in the do…
We calculate the exchange energy in two dimensional laterally coupled quantum dots using Heitler-London, Hund-Mullikan and variational methods. We assess the quality of these approximations in zero and finite magnetic fields comparing against numerically exact results. We find that surprisingly, the Hund-Mullikan method does not offer any significant improvement over the much simpler Heitler-London method, whether at large or small interdot distances. Contrary to that, our variational ansatz proves substantially better. In a single dot at finite magnetic field, all approximate methods fail. Th…
Exchange interaction has been studied for electrons in coupled quantum dots (QD's) by a configuration interaction method using confinement potentials with different profiles. The confinement potential has been parametrized by a two-centre power-exponential function, which allows us to investigate various types of QD's described by either soft or hard potentials of different range. For the soft (Gaussian) confinement potential the exchange energy decreases with increasing interdot distance due to the decreasing interdot tunnelling. For the hard (rectangular-like) confinement potential we have f…
We examine the logical qubit system of a pair of electron spins in double quantum dots. Each electron experiences a different hyperfine interaction with the local nuclei of the lattice, leading to a relative phase difference, and thus decoherence. Methods such as nuclei polarization, state narrowing, and spin-echo pulses have been proposed to delay decoherence. Instead we propose to suppress hyperfine dephasing by adiabatic rotation of the dots in real space, leading to the same average hyperfine interaction. We show that the additional effects due to the motion in the presence of spin-orbit c…
g-factor tuning of electrons in quantum dots is studied as function of in-plane and perpendicular magnetic fields for different confinements. Rashba and Dresselhaus effects are considered, and comparison is made between wide- and narrow-gap materials. The interplay between magnetic fields and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling is analyzed, with two distinct phases found in the spectrum for GaAs in perpendicular field. The anisotropy of the g-factor is reported, and good agreement with available experimental findings is obtained.
We investigate the zero-frequency shot noise of electronic tunneling through a single quantum dot (SQD) and coherently coupled quantum dots (CQD) taking into account the Coulomb interaction. Within Hartree-Fock approximation, the analytical expressions of current and zero-frequency shot noise are self-consistently derived in the framework of full counting statistics for the both systems. We demonstrate that the correction term of zero-frequency shot noise induced by the intradot Coulomb interaction is almost negligible compared to the noninteracting shot noise in a SQD, while in a CQD the inte…
We investigate the wave functions, spectrum, and g-factor anisotropy of low-energy electrons confined to self-assembled, pyramidal InAs quantum dots (QDs) subject to external magnetic and electric fields. We present the construction of trial wave functions for a pyramidal geometry with hard-wall confinement. We explicitly find the ground and first excited states and show the associated probability distributions and energies. Subsequently, we use these wave functions and 8-band $k\cdot p$ theory to derive a Hamiltonian describing the QD states close to the valence band edge. Using a perturbativ…
Charge-neutral excitons in semiconductor quantum dots have a small finite energy separation caused by the anisotropic exchange splitting. Coherent excitation of neutral excitons will generally excite both exciton components, unless the excitation is parallel to one of the dipole axes. We present a polaron master equation model to describe two-exciton pumping using a coherent continuous wave pump field in the presence of a realistic anisotropic exchange splitting. We predict a five-peak incoherent spectrum, thus generalizing the Mollow triplet to become a Mollow quintuplet. We experimentally co…
We investigated optical spin orientation and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in individual self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) doped by a single Mn atom, a magnetic impurity providing a neutral acceptor A$^0$ with an effective spin $J=1$. We find that the spin of an electron photo-created in such a quantum dot can be efficiently oriented by a quasi-resonant circularly-polarized excitation. For the electron spin levels which are made quasi-degenerate by a magnetic field compensating the exchange interaction $Δ_e$ with A$^0$, there is however a full depolarization due the anisotropi…
The exchange coupling between quantum dot spin qubits is isotropic, which restricts the types of quantum gates that can be formed. Here, we propose a method for controlling anisotropic interactions between spins arranged in a bus geometry. The symmetry is broken by an external magnetic field, resulting in XXZ-type interactions that can efficiently generate Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states or universal gate sets for exchange-only quantum computing. Analysis of the bus ground state provides a link between quantum critical phenomena and the communication capacity.
We describe in detail a full configuration interaction (CI) method designed to analyze systems of quantum dots. This method is capable of exploring large regions of parameter space, like more approximate approaches such as Heitler London and Hund Mulliken, though it is not limited to weakly coupled dots. In particular, this method is well-suited to the analysis of solid state quantum-dot-based qubits, and we consider the case of a double quantum dot (DQD) singlet-triplet qubit. Past analyses have used techniques which are either substantially restricted in the regimes they can be used, or devi…
We describe the spin and charge dynamics of the system of two electrons confined within a double quantum dot defined in a quantum wire. The spin dynamics is driven by the electron motion in presence of the spin-orbit interaction and the randomly varying local Overhauser field due to the nuclear spins. The Schroedinger equation is solved with the time-dependent configuration interaction method that allows for an exact description of the system dynamics. The procedures of the spin separation, exchange and read-out by the spin to charge conversion all induced by the detuning variation are simulat…
Spintronics devices rely on spin-dependent transport behavior evoked by the presence of spin-polarized electrons. Transport through nanostructures, on the other hand, is dominated by strong Coulomb interaction. We study a model system in the intersection of both fields, a quantum dot attached to ferromagnetic leads. The combination of spin-polarization in the leads and strong Coulomb interaction in the quantum dot gives rise to an exchange field acting on electron spins in the dot. Depending on the parameter regime, this exchange field is visible in the transport either via a precession of an …
The exchange effect and the magneto-plasmon mode dispersion are studied theoretically for an anisotropic two-dimensional electronic system in the presence of an uniform perpendicular magnetic field. Employing an effective low-energy model with anisotropic effective masses, which is relevant for a monolayer of phosphorus, the exchange effect due to the electron-electron interaction is treated within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. The magneto-plasmon mode dispersion is obtained by solving a Bethe-Salpeter equation for the electron density-density correlation function within the …
It has recently been proposed that spin-transfer torques in magnetic systems with anisotropic exchange can be strongly enhanced, reducing the characteristic current density with up to four orders of magnitude compared to conventional setups. Motivated by this, we analytically solve the equations of motion in a collective-coordinate framework for this type of anisotropic exchange system, to investigate the domain wall dynamics in detail. In particular, we obtain analytical expressions for the maximum attainable domain wall velocity of such a setup and also for the occurrence of Walker breakdown…
The mechanism of Stokes shift in semiconductor quantum dots is investigated by calculating the energy of the excitonic states. We have taken into account all possible contributions to the total electronic energy in the dot, i.e, dielectric mismatch between dot and surrounding medium, the effects of finite barrier height and electron-hole exchange interaction. The Stokes shift is calculated as a function of radius of dot and compared with experimental data on two different semiconductor based quantum dots. These results provide evidence for exchange splitting of excitonic states, as the mechani…
Optical studies of a bright exciton provide only limited information about the hole anisotropy in a quantum dot. In this work we present a universal method to study heavy hole anisotropy using a dark exciton in a moderate in-plane magnetic field. By analysis of the linear polarization of the dark exciton photoluminescence we identify both isotropic and anisotropic contributions to the hole g-factor. We employ this method for a number of individual self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots, demonstrating a variety of behaviors of in-plane hole g-factor: from almost fully anisotropic to almost isotr…
The optically induced indirect exchange interaction between spins in two quantum dots is investigated theoretically. We present a microscopic formulation of the interaction between the localized spin and the itinerant carriers including the effects of correlation, using a set of canonical transformations. Correlation effects are found to be of comparable magnitude as the direct exchange. We give quantitative results for realistic quantum dot geometries and find the largest couplings for one dimensional systems.
We investigate the optical response of quantum dot molecules coherently driven by polarized laser light. Our description includes the splitting in excitonic levels caused by isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions. We consider interdot transitions mediated by hole tunneling between states with the same total angular momentum and between bright and dark exciton states, as allowed by spin-flip hopping between the dots in the molecule. Using realistic experimental parameters we demonstrate that the excitonic states coupled by tunneling exhibit a rich and controllable optical response. We …
