We propose a fast optically induced two-qubit \textsc{c-phase} gate between two resident spins in a pair of coupled quantum dots. An excited bound state which extends over the two dots provides an effective electron-electron exchange interaction. The gate is made possible by the electron-hole exchange interaction, which isolates a single transition in the system. When combined with appropriate single qubit rotations, this gate generates an entangled state of the two spins.
We report on the resonant emission in coherently-driven single semiconductor quantum dots. We demonstrate that an ultra-weak non-resonant laser acts as an optical gate for the quantum dot resonant response. We show that the gate laser suppresses Coulomb blockade at the origin of a resonant emission quenching, and that the optically-gated quantum dots systematically behave as ideal two-level systems in both regimes of coherent and incoherent resonant emission.
We examine the influence of nuclear spins on the performance of optically induced rotations of single electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots. We consider Raman type optical transitions between electron spin states and take into account the additional effect of the Overhauser field. We calculate average fidelities of rotations around characteristic axes in the presence of nuclear spins analytically with perturbation theory up to second order in the Overhauser field. Moreover, we calculate the fidelity using numerical averaging over the nuclear field distribution, including arbitrary order…
We report electronic transport on silicon double and triple dots created with the optimized number of two gates. Using silicon nitride spacers two dots in series are created below two top gates overlapping a silicon nanowire. Coupling between dots is controlled by gate voltages. A third dot is created either by combined action of gate voltages or local doping depending on the spacers length. The main characteristics of the triple dot stability diagram are quantitatively fitted.
Recently, longitudinal acoustic phonons have been identified as the main source of the intensity damping observed in Rabi rotation measurements of the ground-state exciton of a single InAs/GaAs quantum dot. Here we report experiments of intensity damped Rabi rotations in the case of detuned laser pulses, the results have implications for the coherent optical control of both excitons and spins using detuned laser pulses.
We perform scanning gate microscopy on individual suspended carbon nanotube quantum dots. The size and position of the quantum dots can be visually identified from the concentric high conductance rings. For the ultra clean devices used in this study, two new effects are clearly identified. Electrostatic screening creates non-overlapping multiple sets of Coulomb rings from a single quantum dot. In double quantum dots, by changing the tip voltage, the interactions between the quantum dots can be tuned from the weak to strong coupling regime.
We replace the established aluminium gates for the formation of quantum dots in silicon with gates made from palladium. We study the morphology of both aluminium and palladium gates with transmission electron microscopy. The native aluminium oxide is found to be formed all around the aluminium gates, which could lead to the formation of unintentional dots. Therefore, we report on a novel fabrication route that replaces aluminium and its native oxide by palladium with atomic-layer-deposition-grown aluminium oxide. Using this approach, we show the formation of low-disorder gate-defined quantum d…
We present a theory of excitonic processes in gate controlled graphene quantum dots. The dependence of the energy gap on shape, size and edge for graphene quantum dots with up to a million atoms is predicted. Using a combination of tight-binding, Hartree-Fock and configuration interaction methods, we show that triangular graphene quantum dots with zigzag edges exhibit optical transitions simultaneously in the THz, visible and UV spectral ranges, determined by strong electron-electron and excitonic interactions. The relationship between optical properties and finite magnetic moment and charge d…
Deep cooling of electron and nuclear spins is equivalent to achieving polarization degrees close to 100% and is a key requirement in solid state quantum information technologies. While polarization of individual nuclear spins in diamond and SiC reaches 99% and beyond, it has been limited to 60-65% for the nuclei in quantum dots. Theoretical models have attributed this limit to formation of coherent "dark" nuclear spin states but experimental verification is lacking, especially due to the poor accuracy of polarization degree measurements. Here we measure the nuclear polarization in GaAs/AlGaAs …
Semiconductor quantum dots have emerged as promising candidates for implementation of quantum information processing since they allow for a quantum interface between stationary spin qubits and propagating single photons. In the meanwhile, transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers have moved to the forefront of solid-state research due to their unique band structure featuring a large band gap with degenerate valleys and non-zero Berry curvature. Here we report the observation of quantum dots in monolayer tungsten-diselenide with an energy that is 20 to 100 meV lower than that of two dime…

Elastic strain changes the energies of the conduction band in a semiconductor, which will affect transport through a semiconductor nanostructure. We show that the typical strains in a semiconductor nanostructure from metal gates are large enough to create strain-induced quantum dots (QDs). We simulate a commonly used QD device architecture, metal gates on bulk silicon, and show the formation of strain-induced QDs. The strain-induced QD can be eliminated by replacing the metal gates with poly-silicon gates. Thus strain can be as important as electrostatics to QD device operation operation.
We report the computer-automated tuning of gate-defined semiconductor double quantum dots in GaAs heterostructures. We benchmark the algorithm by creating three double quantum dots inside a linear array of four quantum dots. The algorithm sets the correct gate voltages for all the gates to tune the double quantum dots into the single-electron regime. The algorithm only requires (1) prior knowledge of the gate design and (2) the pinch-off value of the single gate $T$ that is shared by all the quantum dots. This work significantly alleviates the user effort required to tune multiple quantum dot …
The spin-dependent localization of electrons in quadruple quantum dots (QD's) has been studied by the configuration interaction method. We have investigated two nanodevices that consist of laterally coupled quadruple QD's. We have shown that -- in both the nanodevices with suitably chosen parameters -- the exclusive OR (XOR) logic gate can be realized by all-electrical control with the readout of output via the spin-to-charge conversion. We have determined the nanodevice parameters that are optimal for the performance of the XOR logic gate.
We prepare a gate-defined quadruple quantum dot to study the gate-tunability of single to quadruple quantum dots with finite inter-dot tunnel couplings. The measured charging energies of various double dots suggest that the dot size is governed by gate geometry. For the triple and quadruple dots we study gate-tunable inter-dot tunnel couplings. Particularly for the triple dot we find that the effective tunnel coupling between side dots significantly depends on the alignment of the center dot potential. These results imply that the present quadruple dot device has gate performance relevant for …
We present a feasible scheme for performing an optically controlled phase gate between two conduction electron spin qubits in adjacent self assembled quantum dots. Interaction between the dots is mediated by the tunneling of the valence hole state which is activated only by applying a laser pulse of the right polarization and frequency. Combining the hole tunneling with the Pauli blocking effect, we obtain conditional dynamics for the two quantum dots, which is the essence of our gating operations. Our results are of explicit relevance to the recent generation of vertically stacked self-assemb…
We report on a high resolution x-ray diffraction study unveiling the effect of carriers optically injected into (In,Ga)As quantum dots on the surrounding GaAs crystal matrix. We find a tetragonal lattice expansion with enhanced elongation along the [001] crystal axis that is superimposed on an isotropic lattice extension. The isotropic contribution arises from excitation induced lattice heating as confirmed by temperature dependent reference studies. The tetragonal expansion on the femtometer scale is attributed to polaron formation by carriers trapped in the quantum dots.
We investigate the effect of the Coulomb interaction on the applicability of quantum gates on a system of two Coulomb-coupled quantum dots. We calculate the fidelity for a single- and a two-qubit gate and the creation of Bell states in the system. The influence of radiative damping is also studied. We find that the application of quantum gates based on the Coulomb interaction leads to significant input state-dependent errors which strongly depend on the Coulomb coupling strength. By optimizing the Coulomb matrix elements via the material and the external field parameters, error rates in the ra…
We characterize InSb quantum dots induced by bottom finger gates within a nanowire that is grown via the vapor-liquid-solid process. The gates are separated from the nanowire by an exfoliated 35\,nm thin hexagonal BN flake. We probe the Coulomb diamonds of the gate induced quantum dot exhibiting charging energies of $\sim 2.5\,\mathrm{meV}$ and orbital excitation energies up to $0.3\,\mathrm{meV}$. The gate hysteresis for sweeps covering 5 Coulomb diamonds reveals an energy hysteresis of only $60\mathrm{μeV}$ between upwards and downwards sweeps. Charge noise is studied via long-term measureme…
We propose a method to generate a two-dimensional cluster state of polarization encoded photonic qubits from two coupled quantum dot emitters. We combine the recent proposal [N. H. Lindner and T. Rudolph, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 113602 (2009)] for generating 1-dimensional cluster state strings from a single dot, with a new proposal for an optically induced conditional phase (CZ) gate between the two quantum dots. The entanglement between the two quantum dots translates to entanglement between the two photonic cluster state strings. Further inter-pair coupling of the quantum dots using cavities a…
Exchange-coupled singlet-triplet spin qubits in two gate-defined double quantum dots are considered theoretically. Using charge density operators to describe the double-dot orbital states, we calculate the Coulomb couplings between the qubits, and identify optimal bias points for single- and two-qubit operations, as well as convenient idle positions. The same intuitive formulation is used to derive dephasing rates of these qubits due to the fluctuating charge environment, thereby providing the main considerations for a quantum computation architecture that is within current experimental capabi…
We report on charge detection in electrostatically-defined quantum dot devices in bilayer graphene using an integrated charge detector. The device is fabricated without any etching and features a graphite back gate, leading to high quality quantum dots. The charge detector is based on a second quantum dot separated from the first dot by depletion underneath a 150 nm wide gate. We show that Coulomb resonances in the sensing dot are sensitive to individual charging events on the nearby quantum dot. The potential change due to single electron charging causes a step-like change (up to 77 %) in the…

We use numerically exact Chebyshev expansion and kernel polynomial methods to study transport through circular graphene quantum dots in the framework of a tight-binding honeycomb lattice model. Our focus lies on the regime where individual modes of the electrostatically defined dot dominate the charge carrier dynamics. In particular, we discuss the scattering of an injected Dirac electron wave packet for a single quantum dot, electron confinement in the dot, the optical excitation of dot-bound modes, and the propagation of an electronic excitation along a linear array of dots.
We investigate gate voltage dependence of electrical readout noise in high-speed rf reflectometry using gallium arsenide quantum dots. The fast Fourier transform spectrum from the real time measurement reflects build-in device noise and circuit noise including the resonator and the amplifier. We separate their noise spectral components by model analysis. Detail of gate voltage dependence of the flicker noise is investigated and compared to the charge sensor sensitivity. We point out that the dominant component of the readout noise changes by the measurement integration time.
The capacitive couplings between gate-defined quantum dots and their gates vary considerably as a function of applied gate voltages. The conversion between gate voltages and the relevant energy scales is usually performed in a regime of rather symmetric dot-lead tunnel couplings strong enough to allow direct transport measurements. Unfortunately this standard procedure fails for weak and possibly asymmetric tunnel couplings, often the case in realistic devices. We have developed methods to determine the gate voltage to energy conversion accurately in the different regimes of dot-lead tunnel co…
We study the leakage dynamics of charge stored in an ensemble of CdTe quantum dots embedded in a field-effect structure. Optically excited electrons are stored and read out by a proper time sequence of bias pulses. We monitor the dynamics of electron loss and find that the rate of the leakage is strongly dependent on time, which we attribute to an optically generated electric field related to the stored charge. A rate equation model quantitatively reproduces the results.
Time-resolved electron dynamics in coupled quantum dots is directly observed by a pulsed-gate technique. While individual gate voltages are modulated with periodic pulse trains, average charge occupations are measured with a nearby quantum point contact as detector. A key component of our setup is a sample holder optimized for broadband radio frequency applications. Our setup can detect displacements of single electrons on time scales well below a nanosecond. Tunneling rates through individual barriers and relaxation times are obtained by using a rate equation model. We demonstrate the full ch…
Quantum confinenement and manipulation of charge carriers are critical for achieving devices practical for quantum technologies. The interplay between electron spin and valley, as well as the possibility to address their quantum states electrically and optically, make two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides an emerging platform for the development of quantum devices. In this work, we fabricate devices based on heterostructures of layered 2D materials, in which we realize gate-controlled tungsten diselenide (WSe2) hole quantum dots. We discuss the observed mesoscopic transport fea…
Enhancement-mode Si/SiGe electron quantum dots have been pursued extensively by many groups for \revEdit{their} potential in quantum computing. Most of the reported dot designs utilize multiple metal-gate layers and use Si/SiGe heterostructures with Ge concentration close to 30\%. Here we report the fabrication and low-temperature characterization of quantum dots in Si/Si$_{0.8}$Ge$_{0.2}$ heterostructures using only one metal-gate layer. We find that the threshold voltage of a channel narrower than 1 $μ$m increases as the width decreases. The higher threshold can be attributed to the combinat…
We present here results of atomistic theory of electrons confined by metallic gates in a single layer of transition metal dichalcogenides. The electronic states are described by the tight-binding model and computed using a computational box including up to million atoms with periodic boundary conditions and parabolic confining potential due to external gates embedded in it. With this methodology applied to MoS2, we find a twofold degenerate energy spectrum of electrons confined in the two non-equivalent K-valleys by the metallic gates as well as six-fold degenerate spectrum associated with Q-v…
Graphene and bilayer graphene quantum dots are promising hosts for spin qubits with long coherence times. Although recent technological improvements make it possible to confine single electrons electrostatically in bilayer graphene quantum dots, and their spin and valley texture of the single particle spectrum has been studied in detail, their relaxation dynamics remains still unexplored. Here, we report on transport through a high-frequency gate controlled single-electron bilayer graphene quantum dot. By transient current spectroscopy of single-electron spin states, we extract a lower bound o…
With gate-defined electrostatic traps fabricated on a double quantum well we are able to realize an optically active and voltage-tunable quantum dot confining individual, long-living, spatially indirect excitons. We study the transition from multi excitons down to a single indirect exciton. In the few exciton regime, we observe discrete emission lines reflecting the interplay of dipolar interexcitonic repulsion and spatial quantization. The quantum dot states are tunable by gate voltage and employing a magnetic field results in a diamagnetic shift. The scheme introduces a new gate-defined plat…
We consider electrostatically coupled quantum dots in topological insulators, otherwise confined and gapped by a magnetic texture. By numerically solving the (2+1) Dirac equation for the wave packet dynamics, we extract the energy spectrum of the coupled dots as a function of bias-controlled coupling and an external perpendicular magnetic field. We show that the tunneling energy can be controlled to a large extent by the electrostatic barrier potential. Particularly interesting is the coupling via Klein tunneling through a resonant valence state of the barrier. The effective three-level system…
We theoretically analyse the possibility to electrostatically confine electrons in circular quantum dot arrays, impressed on contacted graphene nanoribbons by top gates. Utilising exact numerical techniques, we compute the scattering efficiency of a single dot and demonstrate that for small-sized scatterers the cross-sections are dominated by quantum effects, where resonant scattering leads to a series of quasi-bound dot states. Calculating the conductance and the local density of states for quantum dot superlattices we show that the resonant carrier transport through such graphene-based nanos…
We present gate-controlled single, double, and triple dot operation in electrostatically gapped bilayer graphene. Thanks to the recent advancements in sample fabrication, which include the encapsulation of bilayer graphene in hexagonal boron nitride and the use of graphite gates, it has become possible to electrostatically confine carriers in bilayer graphene and to completely pinch-off current through quantum dot devices. Here, we discuss the operation and characterization of electron-hole double dots. We show a remarkable degree of control of our device, which allows the implementation of tw…
Many electrical applications of quantum dots rely on capacitively coupled gates; therefore, to make reliable devices we need those gate capacitances to be predictable and reproducible. We demonstrate in silicon nanowire quantum dots that gate capacitances are reproducible to within 10% for nominally identical devices. We demonstrate the experimentally that gate capacitances scale with device dimensions. We also demonstrate that a capacitance simulator can be used to predict measured gate capacitances to within 20%. A simple parallel plate capacitor model can be used to predict how the capacita…
We develop a microscopic and atomistic theory of electron spin-based qubits in gated quantum dots in a single layer of transition metal dichalcogenides. The qubits are identified with two degenerate locked spin and valley states in a gated quantum dot. The two-qubit states are accurately described using a multi-million atom tight-binding model solved in wavevector space. The spin-valley locking and strong spin-orbit coupling result in two degenerate states, one of the qubit states being spin-down located at the $+K$ valley of the Brillouin zone, and the other state located at the $-K$ valley w…
Theoretical and numerical calculations of two-phonon processes on gated lateral semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are outlined. A heterostructure made with two laterally coupled QDs, in the presence of an external magnetic field, has been employed in order to study the electron scattering rate due to two-phonon processes. The formalism is based on the acoustic phonon modes via the unscreened deformation potential and the piezoelectric interaction whenever the crystal lattice lacks a center of inversion symmetry. The rates are calculated by using second order perturbation theory. The strong depe…
We report experimental evidence identifying acoustic phonons as the principal source of the excitation-induced-dephasing (EID) responsible for the intensity damping of quantum dot excitonic Rabi rotations. The rate of EID is extracted from temperature dependent Rabi rotation measurements of the ground-state excitonic transition, and is found to be in close quantitative agreement with an acoustic-phonon model.
We exploit hyperfine interactions in a single Mn-ion confined in a quantum dot (QD) to create a qudit, i.e. a multi-level quantum-bit system, with well defined, addressable and robust set of spin states for the realization of universal quantum gates. We generate and probe an arbitrary superposition of states between selected hyperfine energy level pairs by using electron double resonance detected nuclear magnetic resonance (EDNMR). This enables the observation of Rabi oscillations and the experimental realization of NOT and SWAP universal quantum gates that are robust against decoherence. Our …
We study the conductance of an electron interferometer formed in a two dimensional electron gas between a nanostructured quantum contact and the charged tip of a scanning gate microscope. Measuring the conductance as a function of the tip position, thermally induced rings may be observed in addition to Fabry-Pérot interference fringes spaced by half the Fermi wavelength. If the contact is made of a quantum dot opened in the middle of a Kondo valley, we show how the location of the rings allows to measure by electron interferometry the magnetic moment of the dot above the Kondo temperature.
We study the anisotropic orbital effect in the electric field tunability of the phonon induced spin-flip rate in quantum dots (QDs). Our study shows that anisotropic gate potential enhances the spin-flip rate and reduces the level crossing point to a lower quantum dot radius due to the suppression of the Land$\acute{e}$ g-factor towards bulk crystal. In the range of $10^4-10^6$ V/cm, the electric field tunability of the phonon induced spin-flip rate can be manipulated through strong Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. These results might assist the development of a spin based solid state quantum …
Laterally coupled charge sensing of quantum dots is highly desirable, because it enables measurement even when conduction through the quantum dot itself is suppressed. In this work, we demonstrate such charge sensing in a double top gated MOS system. The current through a point contact constriction integrated near a quantum dot shows sharp 2% changes corresponding to charge transitions between the dot and a nearby lead. We extract the coupling capacitance between the charge sensor and the quantum dot, and we show that it agrees well with a 3D capacitance model of the integrated sensor and quan…
