Let K be an arbitrary (commutative) field, and V be a linear subspace of M_n(K) such that codim V<n-1. Using a recent generalization of a theorem of Atkinson and Lloyd, we show that every linear embedding of V into M_n(K) which strongly preserves non-singularity must be M->PMQ or M->PM^TQ for some pair (P,Q) of non-singular matrices of M_n(K), unless n=3, codim V=1 and K is isomorphic to F_2. This generalizes a classical theorem of Dieudonné with a similar strategy of proof. Weak linear preservers are also discussed, as well as the exceptional case of a hyperplane of M_3(F_2).
Using a recent result of Bogdanov and Guterman on the linear preservers of pairs of simultaneously diagonalizable matrices, we determine all the automorphisms of the vector space M_n(R) which stabilize the set of diagonalizable matrices. To do so, we investigate the structure of linear subspaces of diagonalizable matrices of M_n(R) with maximal dimension.
Here we characterize the linear operators that preserve rank of matrices over additively idempotent and multiplicatively cancellative semirings. The main results in this article generalize the corresponding results on the two element Boolean algebra and on the max algebra; and holds on max-plus algebra and some other tropical semirings.
Given an arbitrary field K, we reduce the determination of the singular endomorphisms $f$ of M_n(K) that stabilize GL_n(K) to the classification of n-dimensional division algebras over K. Our method, which is based upon Dieudonné's theorem on singular subspaces of M_n(K), also yields a proof for the classical non-singular case.
Hua's fundamental theorem of geometry of hermitian matrices characterizes all bijective maps on the space of all hermitian matrices, which preserve adjacency in both directions. In this and subsequent paper we characterize maps on the set of all invertible hermitian matrices over a finite field, which preserve adjacency in one direction. This and author's previous result are used to obtain two new results related to maps that preserve the `speed of light' on finite Minkowski space-time. In this first paper it is shown that maps that preserve adjacency on the set of all invertible hermitian mat…
Maps that preserve adjacency on the set of all invertible hermitian matrices over a finite field are characterized. It is shown that such maps form a group that is generated by the maps $A\mapsto PAP^{\ast}$, $A\mapsto A^σ$, and $A\mapsto A^{-1}$, where $P$ is an invertible matrix, $P^{\ast}$ is its conjugate transpose, and $σ$ is an automorphism of the underlying field. Bijectivity of maps is not an assumption but a conclusion. Moreover, adjacency is assumed to be preserved in one directions only. The main result and author's previous result [16] are applied to characterize maps that preserve…
Let $V$ be the set of $n\times n$ complex or real general matrices, Hermitian matrices, symmetric matrices, positive definite (resp. semi-definite) matrices, diagonal matrices, or upper triangular matrices. Fix $k\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0, 1\}$. We characterize linear maps $ψ:V\to V$ that satisfy $ψ(A^k)=ψ(A)^k$ on an open neighborhood $S$ of $I_n$ in $V$. The $k$-power preservers are necessarily $k$-potent preservers, and the case $k=2$ corresponds to Jordan homomorphisms. Applying the results, we characterize maps $ϕ,ψ:V\to V$ that satisfy "$ \operatorname{tr}(ϕ(A)ψ(B)^k)=\operatorname{tr}…
When K is an arbitrary field, we study the affine automorphisms of M_n(K) that stabilize GL_n(K). Using a theorem of Dieudonné on maximal affine subspaces of singular matrices, this is easily reduced to the known case of linear preservers when n>2 or #K>2. We include a short new proof of the more general Flanders' theorem for affine subspaces of M_{p,q}(K) with bounded rank. We also find that the group of affine transformations of M_2(F_2) that stabilize GL_2(F_2) does not consist solely of linear maps. Using the theory of quadratic forms over F_2, we construct explicit isomorphisms between it…
We prove that the only entrywise transforms of rectangular matrices which preserve total positivity or total non-negativity are either constant or linear. This follows from an extended classification of preservers of these two properties for matrices of fixed dimension. We also prove that the same assertions hold upon working only with symmetric matrices; for total-positivity preservers our proofs proceed through solving two totally positive completion problems.
We study linear functions on the space of $n \times n$ matrices over a field which preserve or strongly preserve each of Green's equivalence relations ($\mathcal{L}$, $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{H}$ and $\mathcal{J}$) and the corresponding pre-orders. For each of these relations we are able to completely describe all preservers over an algebraically closed field (or more generally, a field in which every polynomial of degree $n$ has a root), and all strong preservers and bijective preservers over any field. Over a general field, the non-zero $\mathcal{J}$-preservers are all bijective and coincide…
In this paper a complete description of the linear maps $ϕ:W_{n}\rightarrow W_{n}$ that preserve the Lorentz spectrum is given when $n=2$ and $W_{n}$ is the space $M_{n}$ of $n\times n$ real matrices or the subspace $S_{n}$ of $M_{n}$ formed by the symmetric matrices. In both cases, it has been shown that $ϕ(A)=PAP^{-1}$ for all $A\in W_{2}$, where $P$ is a matrix with a certain structure. It was also shown that such preservers do not change the nature of the Lorentz eigenvalues (that is, the fact that they are associated with Lorentz eigenvectors in the interior or on the boundary of the Lore…
