In this work we present a systematic experimental and theoretical study of the structural, transport and superconducting properties of Sm(Fe1-xRux)As(O0.85F0.15) polycrystalline samples as a function of Ru content (x) ranging from 0 to 1. The choice of Ru as isoelectronic substitution at Fe site of F-doped compounds allows to better clarify the role of structural disorder in modifying the normal and superconducting properties of these newly discovered multiband superconductors. Two different regions are identified: the Fe-rich phase (x<0.5) where superconducting and normal state properties are strongly affected by disorder induced by Ru substitution; the Ru-rich phase (x>0.5) where the system is metallic and strongly compensated and the presence of Ru frustrates the magnetic moment on Fe ions. Here the lack of magnetic features and related spin fluctuations may be the cause for the suppression of superconductivity.
Using one-step solid state reaction method, we have successfully synthesized the superconductor SrFe1-xRuxAs. X-ray diffraction indicates that the material has formed the ThCr2Si2-type structure with a space group I4/mmm. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants demonstrates that the Fe ions are successfully replaced by the Ru. By increasing the doping content of Ru, the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the parent compound is suppressed and superconductivity emerges. The maximum superconducting transition temperature is found at 13.5 K with the doping level of x = 0.7. The temper…
The superconductor MgCNi3 has been chemically doped by partial substitution of Ru for Ni in the solid solution MgCNi3-xRux for 0<x<0.5. Magnetic and specific heat measurements show that the Sommerfeld parameter (gamma_exp) and TC decrease immediately on Ru substitution, but that a TC above 2K is maintained even for a relatively large decrease in gamma_exp. Ferromagnetism is not observed to develop through Ru substitution, and the normal state magnetic susceptibility is suppressed.
Neutron powder diffraction has been used to investigate the structural and magnetic behavior of the isoelectronically doped Fe pnictide material PrFe1-xRuxAsO. Substitution of Ru for Fe suppresses the structural and magnetic phase transitions that occur in the undoped compound PrFeAsO. Contrary to the behavior usually observed in 1111 pnictide materials, the suppression of both the structural and magnetic transitions does not result in the emergence of superconductivity or any other new ground state. Interestingly, PrFeAsO itself shows an unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the c-ax…
The effects of isovalent Ru substitution at the Fe sites of BaFe2-xRuxAs2 are investigated by measuring resistivity and Hall coefficient on high-quality single crystals in a wide range of doping (0 < x < 1.4). Ru substitution weakens the antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, inducing superconductivity for relatively high doping level of 0.4 < x < 0.9. Near the AFM phase boundary, the transport properties show non-Fermi-liquid-like behaviors with a linear-temperature dependence of resistivity and a strong temperature dependence of Hall coefficient with a sign change. Upon higher doping, however, both …
The effect of isoelectronic substitutions on the microscopic properties of LaFe1-xRuxAsO, for 0< x< 0.8, has been investigated by means of muSR and 139La NMR. It was found that Ru substitution causes a progressive reduction of the Nèel temperature (T_N) and of the magnetic order parameter without leading to the onset of superconductivity. The temperature dependence of 139La nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 can be suitably described within a two-band model. One band giving rise to the spin density wave ground-state, while the other one is characterized by weakly correlated electrons. …
We studied the effects of isoelectronic Ru substitution at the Fe site on the energy gaps of optimally F-doped SmFeAsO by means of point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The results show that the SmFe_{1-x}Ru_{x}AsO_{0.85}F_{0.15} system keeps a multigap character at least up to x=0.50, and that the gap amplitudes Delta_1 and Delta_2 scale almost linearly with the local critical temperature TcA. The gap ratios 2Delta_i/(kB Tc) remain approximately constant only as long as Tc > 30 K, but increase dramatically when Tc decreases further. This trend seems to be common to many Fe-based supe…
The antiferromagnetic order and structural distortion in the LaFe(As1-xSbx)O system have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and physical properties measurements. Polycrystalline samples of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O (x<0.5) were prepared using solid state synthesis at ambient and high pressure. We find that the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As decreases the structural and magnetic transition temperatures but, contrary to the effects of phosphorus substitution, superconductivity is not induced. Instead a slight increase in the Fe magnetic moment is observed.
The ab-plane resistivity of Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2 (x = 0.00, 0.09, 0.16, 0.21, and 0.28) was studied under nearly hydrostatic pressures, up to 7.4 GPa, in order to explore the T-P phase diagram and to compare the combined effects of iso-electronic Ru substitution and pressure. The parent compound BaFe2As2 exhibits a structural/magnetic phase transition near 134 K. At ambient pressure, progressively increasing Ru concentration suppresses this phase transition to lower temperatures at the approximate rate of ~5 K/% Ru and is correlated with the emergence of superconductivity. By applying pressure to …
We have studied the effects of the isoelectronic substitution of Ru for Fe in polycrystalline samples of the spin density wave (SDW) material PrFeAsO. Crystal structures from powder x-ray diffraction at room temperature and transport properties from 2-300 K are reported. The SDW is completely suppressed upon Ru substitution. The distortion of the tetrahedral coordination environment of the transition metal site increases as the Ru concentration increases, which may be related to the absence of superconductivity above 2 K. Band structure calculations show that the larger size of Ru 4$d$ orbital…
The intermetallic perovskite MgCNi3 is a superconductor with a Tc=7 K. Substitution of Fe and Ru for Ni decreases Tc monotonically as the doping concentration is increased. Here we report thermopower measurements, S(T), on MgCNi3, MgCNi3-xFex and MgCNi3-xRux. For MgCNi3, the thermopower is negative, - 12.5 mikroV/K, at 300 K. The absolute value of S decreases as x increases in MgCNi3-xFex and MgCNi3-xRux. The sign of S changes from negative to positive at low temperatures for values of x > 0.01. These data show that the carriers in MgCNi3 are electrons, and by increasing x and decreasing tempe…
The evolution of 75As NMR parameters with composition and temperature was probed in the Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2 system where Fe is replaced by isovalent Ru. While the Ru-end member was found to be a conventional Fermi liquid, the composition (x=0.5) corresponding to the highest Tc (20K) in this system shows an upturn in 75As 1/T1T below about 80 K evidencing the presence of antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations. These results are similar to those obtained in another system with isovalent substitution BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 [Y. Nakai, T. Iye, S. Kitagawa, K. Ishida, H. Ikeda, S. Kasahara, H. Shishido, T. Shib…
Based on the five-orbital model, we derive the reduced impurity scattering rate $g=zγ/2πT_{c0}$ in Sm(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$)AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ from the residual resistivity. At $x=0$, the transition temperature is $T_{c0}=50$ K. For $0.05<x<0.36$ ($0.84>T_{c}/T_{c0}>0.3$) the obtained value of $g$ ranges from 1.5 to 2.9, which suggests that the $s_\pm$-wave state cannot survive. We point out that the magnetoresistance frequently gives an underestimated value of $g$ in correlated electron systems.
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a new class of materials constructed from multiple principal elements statistically arranged on simple crystallographic lattices. Due to the large amount of disorder present, they are excellent model systems for investigating the properties of materials intermediate between crystalline and amorphous states. Here we report the effects of systematic isoelectronic replacements, using Mo-Y, Mo-Sc, and Cr-Sc mixtures, for the valence electron count 4 and 5 elements in the BCC Ta-Nb-Zr-Hf-Ti high entropy alloy (HEA) superconductor. We find that the superconducting tran…
Isoelectronic substitution is an ideal tuning parameter to alter electronic states and correlations in iron-based superconductors. As this substitution takes place outside the conducting Fe planes, the electronic behaviour is less affected by the impurity scattering experimentally and relevant key electronic parameters can be accessed. In this short review, I present the experimental progress made in understanding the electronic behaviour of the nematic electronic superconductors, FeSe1-xSx. A direct signature of the nematic electronic state is in-plane anisotropic distortion of the Fermi surf…
We report experimental studies of a series of BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ ($0\leq x\leq3$) single crystals and powder specimens using x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and electrical transport measurements. A structural transformation from Cmcm (BaFe$_2$S$_3$) to Pnma (BaFe$_2$Se$_3$) was identified around $x = 0.7\sim 1$. Neutron diffraction measurements on the samples with $x$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 reveal that the N$é$el temperature of the stripe antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed from $\sim$120 to 85 K, while the magnitude of the ordered Fe$^{2+}$ moments …
75As NMR experiments were performed in Ba(Fe1-xRux)2As2 for x=0 to 80%. Magnetic fractions and NMR lineshapes demonstrate that Ru substitution destroys the antiferromagnetic (AF) order inhomogeneously with a magnetic moment distributed from 0.9 to 0 uB. Superconductivity emerges at intermediate Ru doping and coexists with AF order only in the regions where moments are smaller than ~0.3uB, resulting in an original nanoscale texture. This situation contrasts with that of Co substitution, challenging the apparent universality of the phase diagram in Fe-based superconductors.
We use high resolution angle-resolved photoemission to study the electronic structure of the iron based high-temperature superconductors Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ as a function of Ru concentration. We find that substitution of Ru for Fe is isoelectronic, i. e., it does not change the value of the chemical potential. More interestingly, there are no measured, significant changes in the shape of the Fermi surface or in the Fermi velocity over a wide range of substitution levels ($0<x<0.55$). Given that the suppression of the antiferromagnetic and structural phase has been associated with th…
We report on terahertz time-domain spectroscopy on superconducting and metallic iron chalcogenides Rb$_{0.75}$Fe$_{1.6}$Se$_{2-z}$S$_z$. The superconducting transition is reduced from $T_c=$ 32 K ($z=0$) to 22 K ($z=1.0$), and finally suppressed ($z=1.4$) by isoelectronic substitution of Se with S. Dielectric constant and optical conductivity exhibit a metal-to-insulator transition associated with an orbital-selective Mott phase. This orbital-selective Mott transition appears at higher temperature $T_{met}$ with increasing sulfur content, identifying sulfur substitution as an efficient paramet…
Neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation measurements are used to obtain a detailed phase diagram of Pr(Fe,Ru)AsO. The isoelectronic substitution of Ru for Fe acts effectively as spin dilution, suppressing both the structural and magnetic phase transitions. The temperature of the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural phase transition decreases gradually as a function of x. Slightly below the transition temperature coherent precessions of the muon spin are observed corresponding to static magnetism, possibly reflecting a significant magneto-elastic coupling in the FeAs layers. Short range orde…
Iron-based chalcogenides are complex superconducting systems in which orbitally-dependent electronic correlations play an important role. Here, using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we investigate the effect of these electronic correlations outside the nematic phase in the tetragonal phase of superconducting FeSe1-xSx (x = 0; 0:18; 1). With increasing sulfur substitution, the Fermi velocities increase significantly and the band renormalizations are suppressed towards a factor of 1.5-2 for FeS. Furthermore, the chemical pressure leads to an increase in the size of the…
Single crystals of Ca(Fe1-xRux)2As2 (0<x<0.065) and Ca1-yLay(Fe0.973Ru0.027)2As2 (0<y<0.2) have been synthesized and studied with respect to their structural, electronic and magnetic properties. The partial substitution of Fe by Ru induces a decrease of the c-axis constant leading for x<0.023 to a suppression of the coupled magnetic and structural (tetragonal to orthorhombic) transitions. At x_cr=0.023 a first order transition to a collapsed tetragonal (CT) phase is found, which behaves like a Fermi liquid and which is stabilized by further increase of x. The absence of superconductivity near …
We investigate the specific influence of structural disorder on the suppression of antiferromagnetic order and on the emergence of cuprate superconductivity. We single out pure disorder, by focusing on a series of Y$_{z}$Eu$_{1-z}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$ samples at fixed oxygen content $y=0.35$, in the range $0\le z\le 1$. The gradual Y/Eu isovalent substitution smoothly drives the system through the Mott-insulator to superconductor transition from a full antiferromagnet with Néel transition $T_N=320$ K at $z=0$ to a bulk superconductor with superconducting critical temperature $T_c=18$ K at $z=…
FeSe has a unique ground state in which superconductivity coexists with a nematic order without long-range magnetic ordering at ambient pressure. Here, to study how the pairing interaction evolves with nematicity, we measured the thermal conductivity and specific heat of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$, where the nematicity is suppressed by isoelectronic sulfur substitution. We find that in the whole nematic ($0\leq x \leq 0.17$) and tetragonal ($x=0.20$) regimes, the application of small magnetic field causes a steep increase of both quantities. This indicates the existence of deep minima or line nodes in …
