We carefully analyze how the abundance of Nitrogen over Oxygen evolves when dependent on metallicity stellar yields with a primary component of N proceeding from AGBs stars are used. We show the results obtained with a chemical evolution models grid, calculated with variable star formation efficiencies, which produce different star formation histories. Finally we see how the N/O abundance is related on the evolutionary history.
I briefly review what has been recently learned from determinations of mean stellar ages and abundances from integrated light studies of early-type galaxies, and discuss some new questions posed by recent data. A short discussion of spectroscopic ages is presented, but the main focus of this review is on the abundances of Fe, Mg, Ca, N, and C, obtained from comparisons of measurements taken in integrated spectra of galaxies with predictions from stellar population synthesis models.
Fully cosmological, high resolution N-Body + SPH simulations are used to investigate the chemical abundance trends of stars in simulated stellar halos as a function of their origin. These simulations employ a physically motivated supernova feedback recipe, as well as metal enrichment, metal cooling and metal diffusion. As presented in an earlier paper, the simulated galaxies in this study are surrounded by stellar halos whose inner regions contain both stars accreted from satellite galaxies and stars formed in situ in the central regions of the main galaxies and later displaced by mergers into…
Ultrafaint dwarf galaxies ($M_\star\lesssim10^{5-6}\,{\rm M}_\odot$) are relics of an early phase of galaxy formation. They contain some of the oldest and most metal-poor stars in the Universe which likely formed before the epoch of hydrogen reionisation. These galaxies are so faint that they can only be detected as satellites of the Milky Way. They are so small that they are just barely resolved in current cosmological hydrodynamics simulations. Here we combine very high resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations with a semi-analytic model of galaxy formation to study the demographics and s…
The Local Group (LG) is an environment accessible to detailed studies of galaxy formation, providing a complement to the early universe. In particular, spectroscopy of resolved stellar populations in the LG provides kinematical and chemical information for individual stars that can be used to infer the history of $L_\star$ galaxies like the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31). The Gaia revolution in the MW has enabled comprehensive observational studies of the MW's formation history. The exquisite detail in which the MW has been studied is currently not achievable in any other $L_\star$ galaxy.…
We present an extensive study of spectroscopically-derived chemical abundances for M87 and its globular cluster (GC) system. Using observations from the Mitchell spectrograph at McDonald, LRIS at Keck, and Hectospec on the MMT, we derive new metallicity gradients from $\sim 2$ to $140$ kpc. We use a novel hierarchical statistical framework to simultaneously separate the GC system into subpopulations while measuring the metallicity gradients of those subpopulations. We create physically-motivated spectral stacks of the GC subpopulations by leveraging the output of this statistical framework to …
Wave dark matter ($ψ\rm{DM}$) composed of extremely light bosons ($m_ψ \sim 10^{-22}\,\rm eV$), with quantum pressure suppressing structures below a kpc-scale de Broglie wavelength, has become a viable dark matter candidate. Compared to the conventional free-particle $ψ{\rm DM}$ (${\rm FP} ψ{\rm DM}$), the extreme-axion $ψ\rm{DM}$ model (${\rm EA} ψ{\rm DM}$) proposed by Zhang & Chiueh (2017) features a larger cut-off wavenumber and a broad spectral bump in the matter transfer function. Here we conduct cosmological simulations to compare the halo abundances and assembly histories at $z=4-11$ b…
In search for a synthetic understanding, a scenario for the evolution of the star formation rate and the chemical abundances in galaxies is proposed, combining gas infall from galactic halos, outflow of gas by supernova explosions, and an oscillatory star formation process. The oscillatory star formation model is a consequence of the modelling of the fractional masses changes of the hot, warm and cold components of the interstellar medium. The observed periods of oscillation vary in the range $(0.1-3.0)\times10^{7}$\,yr depending on various parameters existing from giant to dwarf galaxies. The…

Hierarchical structure formation implies that the number of subhalos within a dark matter halo depends not only on halo mass, but also on the formation history of the halo. This dependence on the formation history, which is highly correlated with halo concentration, can account for the super-Poissonian scatter in subhalo occupation at a fixed halo mass that has been previously measured in simulations. Here we propose a model to predict the subhalo abundance function for individual host halos, that incorporates both halo mass and concentration. We combine results of cosmological simulations wit…
We present a new set of weak-line abundances of HII regions in M81, based on Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) observations. The aim is to derive plasma and abundance analysis for a sizable set of emission-line targets to study the galactic chemical contents in the framework of galactic metallicity gradients. We used the weak-line abundance approach by deriving electron density and temperatures for several HII regions in M81. Gradient analysis is based on oxygen abundances.Together with a set of HII region abundances determined similarly by us with Multi-Mirror Telescope (MMT) spectra, t…
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are some of the major dust components in the interstellar medium (ISM). We present our evolution models for the abundance of PAHs in the ISM on a galaxy-evolution timescale. We consider shattering of carbonaceous dust grains in interstellar turbulence as the formation mechanism of PAHs while the PAH abundance can be reduced by coagulation onto dust grains, destruction by supernova shocks, and incorporation into stars. We implement these processes in a one-zone chemical evolution model to obtain the evolution of the PAH abundance in a galaxy. We find that…
The abundance of fluorine in a few Galactic globular clusters is known to strongly vary from star-to-star. These unexpected chemical properties are an additional confirmation of the chemical inhomogeneities already found in several GC, and probably caused by the first generations of stars formed in these systems. The aim of this article is to complement our understanding of the F-behaviour in GC stars and to look for new constraints on the formation histories of their multiple stellar populations. We have collected near-IR spectra of 15 RGB stars belonging to GC spanning a wide range of metall…
We develop a chemical evolution model in order to study the star formation history of the Milky Way. Our model assumes that the Milky Way is formed from a closed box-like system in the inner regions, while the outer parts of the disc experience some accretion. Unlike the usual procedure, we do not fix the star formation prescription (e.g. Kennicutt law) in order to reproduce the chemical abundance trends. Instead, we fit the abundance trends with age in order to recover the star formation history of the Galaxy. Our method enables one to recover with unprecedented accuracy the star formation hi…
We present detailed chemical abundances in 8 clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We measure abundances of 22 elements for clusters spanning a range in age of 0.05 to 12 Gyr, providing a comprehensive picture of the chemical enrichment and star formation history of the LMC. The abundances were obtained from individual absorption lines using a new method for analysis of high resolution ($R\sim$25,000) integrated light spectra of star clusters. This method was developed and presented in Papers I, II, and III of this series. In this paper, we develop an additional integrated light $χ^2$-…
Observational studies of halo stars during the last two decades have placed some limits on the quantity and nature of accreted dwarf galaxy contributions to the Milky Way stellar halo by typically utilizing stellar phase-space information to identify the most recent halo accretion events. In this study we tested the prospects of using 2-D chemical abundance ratio distributions (CARDs) found in stars of the stellar halo to determine its formation history. First, we used simulated data from eleven "MW-like" halos to generate satellite template sets of 2-D CARDs of accreted dwarf satellites which…
Studying the evolution of dwarf galaxies can provide insights into the characteristics of systems that can act as building blocks of massive galaxies. This paper discusses the history of star formation and gas flows (inflow and outflow) of a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group, NGC 6822, from the viewpoint of gas-phase and stellar chemical abundance. Gas-phase oxygen abundance, stellar metallicity distribution and gas fraction data are compared to chemical evolution models in which continuous star formation and gas flows are assumed. If the galaxy is assumed to be a closed or an accretio…
I will review the tips learned from panchromatic modeling of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), based on our recent work to study the relationship between AGN and star formation (SF). Several AGN SED models are compared, and signifficant AGN contribution is found in the IR luminosities and corresponding star formation rate (SFR). I will review the AGN-SF relation and how different parameters and sample selections affect the observed correlation. I will then report on the constant ratio discovered between the SFR and the black hole mass accretion rate (BHAR), and their implications on the gas suppl…
Chemical abundances of stars in the Milky Way disk are empirical tracers of its enrichment history. However, they capture joint-information that is valuable to disentangle. In this work, we seek to quantify how individual abundances evolve across the present-day radius of the disk, at fixed supernovae contribution ([Fe/H], [Mg/Fe]). We use 18,135 APOGEE DR17 red clump stars and 7,943 GALAH DR3 main sequence stars to compare the abundance distributions conditioned on ([Fe/H], [Mg/Fe]) across $3-13$ kpc and $6.5-9.5$ kpc, respectively. In total we examine 15 elements: C, N, Al, K (light), O, Si,…
We present [Fe/H], ages, and Ca abundances for an initial sample of 10 globular clusters in NGC 5128 obtained from high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio echelle spectra of their integrated light. All abundances and ages are obtained using our original technique for high resolution integrated light abundance analysis of globular clusters. The clusters have a range in [Fe/H] between -1.6 to -0.2. In this sample, the average [Ca/Fe] for clusters with [Fe/H]<-0.4 is +0.37$\pm$0.07, while the average [Ca/Fe] in our MW and M31 GC samples is +0.29 $\pm$0.09 and +0.24 $\pm$0.10, respectively. Th…
Globular clusters (GCs), once thought to be well approximated as simple stellar populations (i.e. all stars having the same age and chemical abundance), are now known to host a variety of anomalies, such as multiple discrete (or spreads in) populations in colour-magnitude diagrams and abundance variations in light elements (e.g., Na, O, Al). Multiple models have been put forward to explain the observed anomalies, although all have serious shortcomings (e.g., requiring a non-standard initial mass function of stars and GCs to have been initially 10-100 times more massive than observed today). Th…

In the era of large-scale spectroscopic surveys in the Local Group (LG), we can explore using chemical abundances of halo stars to study the star formation and chemical enrichment histories of the dwarf galaxy progenitors of the Milky Way (MW) and M31 stellar halos. In this paper, we investigate using the Chemical Abundance Ratio Distributions (CARDs) of seven stellar halos from the Latte suite of FIRE-2 simulations. We attempt to infer galaxies' assembly histories by modelling the CARDs of the stellar halos of the Latte galaxies as a linear combination of template CARDs from disrupted dwarfs,…
We present deep broad-band imaging and long-slit spectroscopy of three compact, low-mass starburst galaxies at redshift z\sim0.2-0.3, also referred to as Green Peas (GP). We measure physical properties of the ionized gas and derive abundances for several species with high precision. We find that the three GPs display relatively low extinction, low oxygen abundances, and remarkably high N/O ratios We also report on the detection of clear signatures of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in these galaxies. We carry out a pilot spectral synthesis study using a combination of both population and evolutionary sy…
The evolution of chemical elements in a galaxy is linked to its star formation history. Variations in star formation history are imprinted in the relative abundances of chemical elements produced in different supernova events and asymptotic giant branch stars. We determine detailed elemental abundances of s- and r-process elements in stars belonging to Group3 of the Geneva-Copenhagen survey and compare their chemical composition with Galactic disc stars. The aim is to look for possible chemical signatures that might give information about the formation history of this kinematic group of stars,…
This is the first in a series of three papers describing a project with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope to measure abundances of the neutral interstellar medium (ISM) in a sample of 9 nearby star-forming galaxies. The goal is to assess the (in)homogeneities of the multiphase ISM in galaxies where the bulk of metals can be hidden in the neutral phase, yet the metallicity is inferred from the ionized gas in the HII regions. The sample, spanning a wide range in physical properties, is to date the best suited to investigate the metallicity behavior of the neutral gas …
Context: In recent years mid- and far infrared spectra of planetary nebulae have been analysed and lead to more accurate abundances. It may be expected that these better abundances lead to a better understanding of the evolution of these objects. Aims: The observed abundances in planetary nebulae are compared to those predicted by the models of Karakas (2003) in order to predict the progenitor masses of the various PNe used. The morphology of the PNe is included in the comparison. Since the central stars play an important role in the evolution, it is expected that this comparison will yield ad…
Stellar evolution models require initial isotopic abundance sets as input, but these abundances are incomplete outside the solar neighborhood, are challenging to infer from elemental observations, and are galaxy specific. Compositions different from the Milky Way (MW) have distinct chemical histories and are important to explore. We present an isotopic history model for the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) based on astrophysical processes, using a complementary approach to GCE models, which can estimate isotopic abundances for future nucleosynthesis studies. We approximated the isotopic…
We present deep photometry of the Carina dwarf Spheroidal galaxy in the B,V filters from CTIO/MOSAIC, out to and beyond the tidal radius. The accurately calibrated photometry is combined with spectroscopic metallicity distributions of Red Giant Branch stars to determine the detailed star formation and chemical evolution history. The star formation history confirms the episodic formation history of Carina and quantifies the duration and strength of each episode in great detail, as a function radius from the centre. Two main episodes of star formation occurred at old (>8 Gyr) and intermediate (2…
Context. The chemical tagging technique is a promising approach to reconstruct the history of the Galaxy by only using stellar chemical abundances. Different studies have undertaken this analysis and they raised several challenges. Aims. Using a sample of open clusters stars, we wish to address two issues: minimize chemical abundance differences which origin is linked to the evolutionary stage of the stars and not their original composition; evaluate a phylogenetic approach to group stars based on their chemical composition. Methods. We derived differential chemical abundances for 207 stars (b…
Deep observations of the dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxy NGC 1396 (M$_V = -16.60$, Mass $\sim 4\times10^8$ M$_\odot$), located in the Fornax cluster, have been performed with the VLT/ MUSE spectrograph in the wavelength region from $4750-9350$ Å. In this paper we present a stellar population analysis studying chemical abundances, the star formation history (SFH) and the stellar initial mass function (IMF) as a function of galacto-centric distance. Different, independent ways to analyse the stellar populations result in a luminosity-weighted age of $\sim$ 6 Gyr and a metallicity [Fe/H]$\sim$ $-0.4…
Numerous studies of integrated starlight, stellar counts, and kinematics have confirmed that the Milky Way is a barred galaxy. However, far fewer studies have investigated the bar's stellar population properties, which carry valuable independent information regarding the bar's formation history. Here we conduct a detailed analysis of chemical abundance distributions ([Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe]) in the on-bar and off-bar regions to study the azimuthal variation of star formation history (SFH) in the inner Galaxy. We find that the on-bar and off-bar stars at Galactocentric radii 3 $< r_{\rm GC}<$ 5 kpc …
The APOGEE Open Cluster Chemical Abundances and Mapping (OCCAM) survey is used to probe the chemical evolution of the s-process element cerium in the Galactic disk. Cerium abundances were derived from measurements of Ce II lines in the APOGEE spectra using the Brussels Automatic Code for Characterizing High Accuracy Spectra (BACCHUS) in 218 stars belonging to 42 open clusters. Our results indicate that, in general, for Ages $<$ 4 Gyr, younger open clusters have higher [Ce/Fe] and [Ce/$α$-element] ratios than older clusters. In addition, metallicity segregates open clusters in the [Ce/X]-Age pl…
It is debated whether the Milky Way bulge has the characteristics of a classical bulge sooner than those of a pseudobulge. Detailed abundance studies of bulge stars is a key to investigate the origin, history, and classification of the bulge. The aim is to add to the discussion on the origin of the bulge and to study detailed abundances determined from near-IR spectra for bulge giants already investigated with optical spectra, the latter also providing the stellar parameters which are very significant for the results of the present study. Especially, the important CNO elements are better deter…
We conduct a quantitative analysis of the star formation history (SFH) of the Milky Way's bulge by exploiting the constraining power of its stellar [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe] distribution functions. Using APOGEE data, we confirm the previously-established bimodal [Mg/Fe]--[Fe/H] distribution within 3 kpc of the inner Galaxy. Compared to that in the solar vicinity, the high-$α$ population in the bulge peaks at a lower [Fe/H]. To fit these observations, we use a simple but flexible star formation framework, which assumes two distinct stages of gas accretion and star formation, and systematically evaluat…
It has recently been shown that the abundance of cold neutral gas may follow a similar evolution as the star formation history. This is physically motivated, since stars form out of this component of the neutral gas and if the case, would resolve the longstanding issue that there is a clear disparity between the total abundance of neutral gas and star forming activity over the history of the Universe. Radio-band 21-cm absorption traces the cold gas and comparison with the Lyman-alpha absorption, which traces all of the gas, provides a measure of the cold gas fraction or the spin temperature. T…
Cyanopolyynes are chains of carbon atoms with an atom of hydrogen and a CN group on either side. They are detected almost everywhere in the ISM, as well as in comets. In the past, they have been used to constrain the age of some molecular clouds, since their abundance is predicted to be a strong function of time. We present an extensive study of the cyanopolyynes distribution in the solar-type protostar IRAS16293-2422 based on TIMASSS IRAM-30m observations. The goals are (i) to obtain a census of the cyanopolyynes in this source and of their isotopologues; (ii) to derive how their abundance va…
We present a multi-wavelength study of the Magellanic Stream (MS), a massive gaseous structure in the Local Group that is believed to represent material stripped from the Magellanic Clouds. We use ultraviolet, optical and radio data obtained with HST/COS, VLT/UVES, FUSE, GASS, and ATCA to study metal abundances and physical conditions in the Stream toward the quasar Fairall 9. Line absorption in the MS from a large number of metal ions and from molecular hydrogen is detected in up to seven absorption components, indicating the presence of multi-phase gas. From the analysis of unsaturated SII a…
We present Herschel/HIFI observations of nine transitions of \hho and \hheo towards six high-mass star-forming regions, obtained as part of the PRISMAS Key Program. Water vapor in translucent clouds is detected in absorption along every sightline. We derive the column density of \hho or \hheo for the lower energy level of each transition observed. The total water column density is about a few $10^{13} \rm{cm^{-2}}$. We find that the abundance of water relative to hydrogen nuclei is $1\times10^{-8}$ in agreement with models for oxygen chemistry with high cosmic ray ionization rates. Relative to…
We have studied the chemical enrichment history of the interstellar medium through an analysis of the n-dimensional stellar abundances space. This work is a non-parametric analysis of the stellar chemical abundance space. The main goal is to study the stars from their organization within this abundance space. Within this space, we seek to find clusters (in a statistical sense), that is, stars likely to share similar chemo-evolutionary history, using two methods: the hierarchical clustering and the principal component analysis. We analysed some selected abundance surveys available in the litera…

Intrinsic iron abundance spreads in globular clusters, although usually small, are very common, and are signatures of self enrichment: some stars within the cluster have been enriched by supernova ejecta from other stars within the same cluster. We use the Bailin (2018) self enrichment model to predict the relationship between properties of the protocluster -- its mass and the metallicity of the protocluster gas cloud -- and the final observable properties today -- its current metallicity and the internal iron abundance spread. We apply this model to an updated catalog of Milky Way globular cl…
Segue 1 is the current best candidate for a "first galaxy", a system which experienced only a single short burst of star formation and has since remained unchanged. Here we present possible star formation scenarios which can explain its unique metallicity distribution. While the majority of stars in all other ultra-faint dwarfs (UFDs) are within 0.5 dex of the mean [Fe/H] for the galaxy, 5 of the 7 stars in Segue 1 have a spread of $Δ$[Fe/H] $>0.8$ dex. We show that this distribution of metallicities canot be explained by a gradual build-up of stars, but instead requires clustered star formati…
We present chemical abundances of red giant branch (RGB) stars in the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellite system of Andromeda (M31), using spectral synthesis of medium resolution (R $\sim 6000$) spectra obtained with the Keck II telescope and DEIMOS spectrograph via the Spectroscopic and Photometric Landscape of Andromeda's Stellar Halo (SPLASH) survey. We coadd stars according to their similarity in photometric metallicity or effective temperature to obtain a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) high enough to measure average [Fe/H] and [$α$/Fe] abundances. We validate our method using high S/N spectra …
The globular cluster M 2 has a photometrically detected double red giant branch (RGB) sequence. We investigate here the chemical differences between the two RGBs in order to gain insight in the star formation history of this cluster. The low-resolution spectra, covering the blue spectral range, were collected with the MODS spectrograph on the LBT, and analyzed via spectrum synthesis technique. The high quality of the spectra allows us to measure C, N, Ba, and Sr abundances relative to iron for 15 RGB stars distributed along the two sequences. We add to the MODS sample C and N measurements for …
We obtained high-resolution near-IR spectra of 45 AGB stars located in the Galactic bulge. The aim of the project is to determine key elemental abundances in these stars to help constrain the formation history of the bulge. A further aim is to link the photospheric abundances to the dust species found in the winds of the stars. Here we present a progress report of the analysis of the spectra.
We present a high-resolution ($R\sim35,000$), high signal-to-noise ($S/N=350$) Magellan/MIKE spectrum of the bright extremely metal-poor star 2MASS~J1808$-$5104. We find [Fe/H] = $-$4.01 (spectroscopic LTE stellar parameters), [Fe/H] = $-$3.8 (photometric stellar parameters), [Fe/H] = $-$3.7 (spectroscopic NLTE stellar parameters). We measured a carbon-to-iron ratio of $\mbox{[C/Fe]}= 0.38$ from the CH G-band. J1808$-$5104 is thus not carbon-enhanced, contrary to many other stars with similarly low iron abundances. We also determine, for the first time, a barium abundance ($\mbox{[Ba/Fe]} =-0.…
The abundances of r-process elements of very metal-poor stars capture the history of the r-process enrichment in the early stage of star formation in a galaxy. Currently, various types of astrophysical sites including neutron star mergers, magneto-rotational supernovae, and collapsars, are suggested as the origin of r-process elements. The time delay between the star formation and the production of r-process elements is the key to distinguish these scenarios with the caveat that the diffusion of r-process elements in the interstellar medium may induce the delay in r-process enrichment because …
We investigate the role of radial migration history of stars in chemical evolution of a disk galaxy, in particular in understanding the origin of their bimodal distribution on the [alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane. For this purpose, we examine the three different models with no, continuous, and discontinuous radial migration, respectively. We find that for the model with radial migration, the [alpha/Fe] ratios of stars in outer disk regions decrease more rapidly with time than the model without radial migration, because the associated net transfer of intermediate and old disk stars from inner to outer d…
The age-metallicity relation is fundamental to study the formation and evolution of the disk. Observations have shown that this relation has a large scatter which can not be explained by observational errors only. That scatter is hence attributed to the effects of radial migration in which stars tracing different chemical evolution histories in the disk get mixed. However, the recent study of Nissen et al. 2020, using high precision observational data of solar type stars, found two relatively tight age-metallicity relations. One sequence of older and metal-richer stars probably traces the chem…
Chemical tagging has great promise as a technique to unveil our Galaxy's history. Grouping stars based on their similar chemistry can establish details of the star formation and merger history of the Milky Way. With precise measurements of stellar chemistry, chemical tagging may be able to group together stars born from the same gas cloud, regardless of their current positions and kinematics. Successfully tagging these birth clusters requires high quality chemical space information and a good cluster-finding algorithm. To test the feasibility of chemical tagging on data from current and upcomi…

Elemental abundances of stars are the result of the complex enrichment history of their galaxy. Interpretation of observed abundances requires flexible modeling tools to explore and quantify the information about Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) stored in such data. Here we present Chempy, a newly developed code for GCE modeling, representing a parametrized open one-zone model within a Bayesian framework. A Chempy model is specified by a set of 5-10 parameters that describe the effective galaxy evolution along with the stellar and star-formation physics: e.g. the star-formation history, the f…
