In this paper, a novel method for representation and recognition of the facial expressions in two-dimensional image sequences is presented. We apply a variation of two-dimensional heteroscedastic linear discriminant analysis (2DHLDA) algorithm, as an efficient dimensionality reduction technique, to Gabor representation of the input sequence. 2DHLDA is an extension of the two-dimensional linear discriminant analysis (2DLDA) approach and it removes the equal within-class covariance. By applying 2DHLDA in two directions, we eliminate the correlations between both image columns and image rows. Then, we perform a one-dimensional LDA on the new features. This combined method can alleviate the small sample size problem and instability encountered by HLDA. Also, employing both geometric and appearance features and using an ensemble learning scheme based on data fusion, we create a classifier which can efficiently classify the facial expressions. The proposed method is robust to illumination changes and it can properly represent temporal information as well as subtle changes in facial muscles. We provide experiments on Cohn-Kanade database that show the superiority of the proposed method. KEYWORDS: two-dimensional heteroscedastic linear discriminant analysis (2DHLDA), subspace learning, facial expression analysis, Gabor wavelets, ensemble learning.
This work shows the use of a two-dimensional Gabor wavelets in image processing. Convolution with such a two-dimensional wavelet can be separated into two series of one-dimensional ones. The key idea of this work is to utilize a Gabor wavelet as a multiscale partial differential operator of a given order. Gabor wavelets are used here to detect edges, corners and blobs. A performance of such an interest point detector is compared to detectors utilizing a Haar wavelet and a derivative of a Gaussian function. The proposed approach may be useful when a fast implementation of the Gabor transform is…

Texture analysis and classification remain as one of the biggest challenges for the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. On this matter, Gabor wavelets has proven to be a useful technique to characterize distinctive texture patterns. However, most of the approaches used to extract descriptors of the Gabor magnitude space usually fail in representing adequately the richness of detail present into a unique feature vector. In this paper, we propose a new method to enhance the Gabor wavelets process extracting a fractal signature of the magnitude spaces. Each signature is reduced usin…

Face detection and tracking in low resolution image is not a trivial task due to the limitation in the appearance features for face characterization. Moreover, facial expression gives additional distortion on this small and noisy face. In this paper, we propose deformable symmetric Gabor wavelet network face model for face detection in low resolution image. Our model optimizes the rotation, translation, dilation, perspective and partial deformation amount of the face model with symmetry constraints. Symmetry constraints help our model to be more robust to noise and distortion. Experimental res…

The resultant image is split into several periodic blocks and energy of each block is used as a feature space to automatically identify defective and defect-free blocks using Ward's hierarchical clustering. We present a method for extracting information about facial expressions from digital images. The method codes facial expression images using a multi-orientation, multi-resolution set of Gabor filters that are topographically ordered and approximately aligned with the face. A similarity space derived from this code is compared with one derived from semantic ratings of the images by human observers. Interestingly the low-dimensional structure of the image-derived similarity space shares organizational features with the circumplex model of affect, suggesting a bridge between categorical and dimen…

We propose an amplitude-phase representation of the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DT-CWT) which provides an intuitive interpretation of the associated complex wavelet coefficients. The representation, in particular, is based on the shifting action of the group of fractional Hilbert transforms (fHT) which allow us to extend the notion of arbitrary phase-shifts beyond pure sinusoids. We explicitly characterize this shifting action for a particular family of Gabor-like wavelets which, in effect, links the corresponding dual-tree transform with the framework of windowed-Fourier analysis. We…

In terms of the importance of different facial views, in this paper, we present multi-view face analysis based on sparse representation and Gabor wavelet coefficients. To evaluate the performance, we conduct face analysis experiments including face recognition (FR) and face expression recogn…

We propose a novel method for constructing Hilbert transform (HT) pairs of wavelet bases based on a fundamental approximation-theoretic characterization of scaling functions--the B-spline factorization theorem. In particular, starting from well-localized scaling functions, we construct HT pairs of biorthogonal wavelet bases of L^2(R) by relating the corresponding wavelet filters via a discrete form of the continuous HT filter. As a concrete application of this methodology, we identify HT pairs of spline wavelets of a specific flavor, which are then combined to realize a family of complex wavel…

In this paper, we present a technique by which high-intensity feature vectors extracted from the Gabor wavelet transformation of frontal face images, is combined together with Independent Component Analysis (ICA) for enhanced face recognition. Firstly, the high-intensity feature vectors are automatically extracted using the local characteristics of each individual face from the Gabor transformed images. Then ICA is applied on these locally extracted high-intensity feature vectors of the facial images to obtain the independent high intensity feature (IHIF) vectors. These IHIF forms the basis of…
In this article we propose a method for the recognition of faces with different facial expressions. For recognition we extract feature vectors by using log-Gabor filters of multiple orientations and scales. Using sliding window algorithm and variances -based masking these features are extracted at image regions that are less affected by the changes of facial expressions. Extracted features are passed to the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) -based recognition method. The results of face recognition experiments using expression variant faces showed that the proposed method could achieve higher…
Gabor wavelet is an essential tool for image analysis and computer vision tasks. Local structure tensors with multiple scales are widely used in local feature extraction. Our research indicates that the current corner detection method based on Gabor wavelets can not effectively apply to complex scenes. In this work, the capability of the Gabor function to discriminate the intensity changes of step edges, L-shaped corners, Y-shaped or T-shaped corners, X-shaped corners, and star-shaped corners are investigated. The minutia descriptor which describes characteristics of minutia, plays a major role in fingerprint recognition. Typically, fingerprint recognition systems employ minutia descriptors to find potential correspondence between minutiae, and they use similarity between two minutia descriptors to calculate overall similarity between two fingerprint images. A good minutia descriptor can improve recognition accuracy of fingerprint recognition system and largely reduce comparing time. A good minutia descriptor should have high ability to distinguish between different minutiae and at the same time sho…

Facial features were tracked and aligned using active appearance models (AAM). SIFT and Gabor features …

Interestingly, since Kuffler's pioneering experiments on retinal ganglion cells, mathematical models have been vital for advancing our understanding of the receptive fields of visual neurons. However, existing models were not designed to describe the most salient attributes of the highly specialized neurons in the V1 to MT motion processing stream; and they have not been able to do so. These maps are then fed into a pre-trained deep convolutional neural network to generate the deep representation. Then the facial expression prediction is simplyachieved by training linear SVMs over the deep representation for different maps and fusing these SV…
In the previous blind deconvolution methods, de-blurred images can be obtained by using the edge or pixel information. However, the existing edge-based methods did not take advantage of edge information in ommi-directions, but only used horizontal and vertical edges when recovering the de-blurred images. This limitation lowers the quality of the recovered images. This paper proposes a method which utilizes edges in different directions to recover the true sharp image. We also provide a statistical table score to show how many directions are enough to recover a high quality true sharp image. In…

Inspired by harmonic analysis, we develop a new, highly accurate and robust INR that does not exhibit this tradeoff. Wavelet Implicit neural REpresentation (WIRE) uses a contin…
