The theory for condensation of higher fermionic clusters is developed. Fully selfconsistent nonlinear equations for the quartet order parameter in strongly coupled fermionic systems are established and solved. The breakdown of the quasiparticle picture is pointed out. Derivation of numerically tractable approximation is described. The momentum projected factorisation ansatz of Ref. \cite{slr09} for the order parameter is employed again. As a definite example the condensation of $α$ particles in nuclear matter is worked out.
A general theory for the condensation of strongly bound quartets in infinite nuclear matter is presented. Critical temperatures for symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter are evaluated. A fully nonlinear theory for the quartet order parameter, based on an analogy of the Gorkov approach to pairing, is presented and solved. The strong qualitative difference with pairing is pointed out.
We investigate the quartet correlations in four-component fermionic systems at the thermodynamic limit within a variational many-body theory. The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-type variational wave function is extended to the systems with the coexistence of pair and quartet correlations at zero temperature. Special attention is paid to the application of the present framework to an alpha-particle condensation in symmetric nuclear matter, where the coexistence of deuteron and alpha condensations is anticipated. We also discuss how physical properties, such as quasiparticle dispersion, can be …

We theoretically study the ground-state properties and the condensations of exciton-like Cooper pairs and biexciton-like Cooper quartets in an electron-hole system. Applying the variational approach associated based on the quartet Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model to the four-component fermionic system consisting of spin-1/2 electrons and spin-1/2 holes, we show how Cooper pairs and quartet correlations appear in the equation of state at the thermodynamic limit. The biexciton-like four-body correlations survive even at the high-density regime as a many-body BCS-like state of Cooper quartet…

Bose-Einstein condensation, observed in either strongly interacting liquid helium or weakly interacting atomic Bose gases, is widely known to be a second-order phase transition. Here, we predict a first-order Bose-Einstein condensation in a cloud of harmonically trapped bosons interacting with both attractive two-body interaction and repulsive three-body interaction, characterized respectively by an $s$-wave scattering length $a<0$ and a three-body scattering hypervolume $D>0$. It happens when the harmonic trapping potential is weak, so with increasing temperature the system changes from a low…
We model the dynamics of condensation in a bimodal trap, consisting of a large reservoir region, and a tight "dimple" whose depth can be controlled. Experimental investigations have found that such dimple traps provide an efficient means of achieving condensation. In our kinetic equations, we include two- and three-body processes. The two-body processes populate the dimple, and lead to loss when one of the colliding atoms is ejected from the trap. The three-body processes produce heating and loss. We explain the principal trends, give a detailed description of the dynamics, and provide quantit…
The condensation of Cooper pairs, originating from the Fermi-surface instability due to a weakly attractive interaction between two fermions, opened a new frontier for exploring many-body physics in interdisciplinary contexts. In this work, we discuss the possible condensation of Cooper triples, which are three-body counterparts of Cooper pairs for three-component fermions with a three-body attraction. Although each composite trimer-like state obeys the Fermi-Dirac statistics, its aggregate can form a condensate at zero center-of-mass momentum in the presence of the internal degrees of freedom…
In an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate quenched to the unitary regime, we predict the sequential formation of a significant fraction of condensed pairs and triples. At short-distances, we demonstrate the two-body and Efimovian character of the condensed pairs and triples, respectively. As the system evolves, the size of the condensed pairs and triples becomes comparable to the interparticle distance, such that many-body effects become significant. The structure of the condensed triples depends on the relative size of Efimov states to density scales. Unexpectedly, we find universal condensed tri…
We study theoretically the collective dynamics of rotational excitations of polar molecules loaded into an optical lattice in two dimensions. These excitations behave as hard-core bosons with a relativistic energy dispersion arising from the dipolar coupling between molecules. This has interesting consequences for the collective many-body phases. The rotational excitations can form a Bose-Einstein condensate at non-zero temperature, manifesting itself as a divergent $T_2$ coherence time of the rotational transition even in the presence of inhomogeneous broadening. The dynamical evolution of a …
The formation of bosonic bound states underlies the formation of a superfluid ground state in the many-body phase diagram of ultracold Fermi gases. We study bound-state formation in a spin- and mass-imbalanced ultracold Fermi gas confined in a box with hard-wall boundary conditions. Because of the presence of finite Fermi spheres, the center-of-mass momentum of the potentially formed bound states can be finite, depending on the parameters controlling mass and spin imbalance as well as the coupling strength. We exploit this observation to estimate the potential location of inhomogeneous phases …
We report the realization of a BEC of metastable helium-4 atoms (4He*) in an all optical potential. Up to 10^5 spin polarized 4He* atoms are condensed in an optical dipole trap formed from a single, focused, vertically propagating far off-resonance laser beam. The vertical trap geometry is chosen to best match the resolution characteristics of a delay-line anode micro-channel plate detector capable of registering single He* atoms. We also confirm the instability of certain spin state combinations of 4He* to two-body inelastic processes, which necessarily affects the scope of future experiments…
We derive a theory for Bose condensation in nonequilibrium steady states of bosonic quantum gases that are coupled both to a thermal heat bath and to a pumped reservoir (or gain medium), while suffering from loss. Such a scenario describes photonic many-body systems such as exciton-polariton gases. Our analysis is based on a set of kinetic equations for a gas of noninteracting bosons. By identifying a dimensionless scaling parameter controlling the boson density, we derive a sharp criterion for which system states become selected to host a macroscopic occupation. We show that with increasing p…
Atomistic van der Waals heterostacks are ideal systems for high-temperature exciton condensation because of large exciton binding energies and long lifetimes. Charge transport and electron energy-loss spectroscopy showed first evidence of excitonic many-body states in such two-dimensional materials. Pure optical studies, the most obvious way to access the phase diagram of photogenerated excitons have been elusive. We observe several criticalities in photogenerated exciton ensembles hosted in MoSe2-WSe2 heterostacks with respect to photoluminescence intensity, linewidth, and temporal coherence …
We study the eigenstate properties of a nonintegrable spin chain that was recently realized experimentally in a Rydberg-atom quantum simulator. In the experiment, long-lived coherent many-body oscillations were observed only when the system was initialized in a particular product state. This pronounced coherence has been attributed to the presence of special "scarred" eigenstates with nearly equally-spaced energies and putative nonergodic properties despite their finite energy density. In this paper we uncover a surprising connection between these scarred eigenstates and low-lying quasiparticl…
These notes deal with the mean-field approximation for equilibrium states of N-body systems in classical and quantum statistical mechanics. A general strategy for the justification of effective models based on statistical independence assumptions is presented in details. The main tools are structure theorems {à} la de Finetti, describing the large N limits of admissible states for these systems. These rely on the symmetry under exchange of particles, due to their indiscernability. Emphasis is put on quantum aspects, in particular the mean-field approximation for the ground states of large boso…
We have observed Bose-Einstein condensation of an atomic gas in the (quasi-)uniform three-dimensional potential of an optical box trap. Condensation is seen in the bimodal momentum distribution and the anisotropic time-of-flight expansion of the condensate. The critical temperature agrees with the theoretical prediction for a uniform Bose gas. The momentum distribution of our non-condensed quantum-degenerate gas is also clearly distinct from the conventional case of a harmonically trapped sample and close to the expected distribution in a uniform system. We confirm the coherence of our condens…
We characterize the dissipative phase transition in a driven dissipative Bose-Einstein condensate of neutral atoms. Our results generalize the work on dissipative nonlinear Kerr resonators towards many modes and stronger interactions. We measure the effective Liouvillian gap and analyze the microscopic system dynamics, where we identify a non-equilibrium condensation process.
