Measurements of quantum oscillations in the cuprate superconductors afford a new opportunity to assess the extent to which the electronic properties of these materials yield to a description rooted in Fermi liquid theory. However, such an analysis is hampered by the small number of oscillatory periods observed. Here we employ a genetic algorithm to globally model the field, angular, and temperature dependence of the quantum oscillations observed in the resistivity of YBa2Cu3O6.59. This approach successfully fits an entire data set to a Fermi surface comprised of two small, quasi-2-dimensional cylinders. A key feature of the data is the first identification of the effect of Zeeman splitting, which separates spin-up and spin-down contributions, indicating that the quasiparticles in the cuprates behave as nearly free spins, constraining the source of the Fermi surface reconstruction to something other than a conventional spin density wave with moments parallel to the CuO2 planes.
We investigate theoretically the excitation of Higgs oscillations of the order parameter in superconductors by incoherent short pulses of light with frequency much larger than the superconducting gap. The excitation amplitude of the Higgs mode is controlled by a single parameter which is determined by the total number of quasiparticles excited by the pulse. This fact can be traced back to the universality of the shape of the light-induced quasiparticle cascade at energy below the Debye frequency and above the gap.
When immersed in a see of cold electrons, local impurities give rise to density modulations known as Friedel oscillations. In spite of the generality of this phenomenon, the exact shape of these modulations is usually computed only for non-interacting electrons with a quadratic dispersion relation. In actual materials, one needs to take into account several additional factors, such as (i) the details of the band structure, (ii) the lifetime of quasiparticles, (iii) in superconductors, the presence of a pairing gap. Studying how these effects influence Friedel oscillations is a viable way to ac…
We perform de Haas-van Alphen measurements and quasiparticle self-consistent \textit{GW} (QS\textit{GW}) calculations on FeS. The calculated Fermi surface (FS) consists of two hole and two electron cylinders. We observe all the eight predicted FS cross sections experimentally. With momentum-independent band-energy adjustments of less than 0.1 eV, the maximum deviation between the calculated and observed cross sections is less than 0.2\% of the Brillouin zone area for $B \parallel c$. The carrier density is $\sim$0.5 carriers/Fe. The mass enhancements are nearly uniform across the FS cylinders …
When magnetic field is applied to metals and semimetals quantum oscillations appear as individual Landau levels cross the Fermi level. Quantum oscillations generally do not occur in superconductors (SC) because magnetic field is either expelled from the sample interior or, if strong enough, drives the material into the normal state. In addition, elementary excitations of a superconductor -- Bogoliubov quasiparticles -- do not carry a well defined electric charge and therefore do not couple in a simple way to the applied magnetic field. We predict here that in Weyl superconductors certain types…
We measure the Shubnikov-de Haas effect in thin-film Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ grown on an (LaAlO$_3$)$_{0.29}$-(SrAl$_{1/2}$Ta$_{1/2}$O$_3$)$_{0.71}$ (LSAT) substrate. We detect all three known Fermi surfaces and extract the Fermi surface volumes, cyclotron effective masses, and quantum lifetimes. We show that the electronic structure is nearly identical to that of single-crystal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, and that the quasiparticle lifetime is consistent with the Tc of comparably clean, single-crystal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Unlike single-crystal Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, where the quantum and transport lifetimes are roughly equal, we…
We investigate subgap quasiparticles of a single level quantum dot coupled to the superconducting and normal leads, whose energy level is periodically driven by external potential. Using the Floquet formalism we determine the quasienergies and analyze redistribution of their spectral weights between individual harmonics upon varying the frequency and amplitude of the driving potential. We also propose feasible spectroscopic methods for probing the in-gap quasiparticles observable in the differential conductance of the charge current averaged over a period of oscillations.
Low-energy quasiparticle excitations in the superconducting (SC) state of UBe$_{13}$ were studied by means of specific-heat ($C$) measurements in a rotating field. Quite unexpectedly, the magnetic-field dependence of $C(H)$ is linear in $H$ with no angular dependence at low fields in the SC state, implying that the gap is fully open over the Fermi surfaces, in stark contrast to the previous expectation. In addition, a characteristic cubic anisotropy of $C(H)$ was observed above 2~T with a maximum (minimum) for $H$ $||$ $[001]$ ($[111]$) within the $(1\bar{1}0)$ plane, both in the normal as wel…
Experimental evidence of the Higgs mode in strongly interacting superfluid Fermi gases had not been observed until recently [Behrle et al., Nat. Phys. 14, 781 (2018)]. Due to the coupling with other collective modes and quasiparticle excitations, generating stable Higgs-mode oscillations is challenging. We study how to excite long-lived Higgs-mode oscillations in a homogeneous superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover. We find that the Higgs mode can be excited by time-periodically modulating the scattering length at an appropriate amplitude and frequency. However, even for a modulation fr…
We study the quasiparticle current in clean ferromagnetic Josephson structures of the form $S_1/F_1/N/F_2/S_2$, where $S$, $F$, and $N$ denote superconducting, ferromagnetic or normal layers respectively. Our focus is on the structure of the conductance $G$ as a function of bias $V$, emphasizing the subgap region. We use a fully self consistent numerical method, coupled to a transfer matrix procedure to extract $G(V)$. We choose material parameters appropriate to experimentally realized Co Cu Nb structures. We find a resonance peak structure as a function of the intermediate layer thickness an…
Quantum mechanical systems with long-range interactions between quasiparticles provide a promising platform for coherent quantum information technology. Superconductors are a natural choice for solid-state based quantum devices, while magnetic impurities inside superconductors give rise to quasiparticle excitations of broken Cooper pairs that provide characteristic information about the host superconductor. Here, we reveal that magnetic impurities embedded below a superconducting La(0001) surface interact via quasiparticles extending to very large distances, up to several tens of nanometers. U…
