We prove that any Artin group of large type is shortlex automatic with respect to its standard generating set, and that the set of all geodesic words over the same generating set satisfies the Falsification by Fellow-Traveller Property (FFTP) and hence is regular.
We study the horofunction boundary of an Artin group of dihedral type with its word metric coming from either the usual Artin generators or the dual generators. In both cases, we determine the horoboundary and say which points are Busemann points, that is the limits of geodesic rays. In the case of the dual generators, it turns out that all boundary points are Busemann points, but this is not true for the Artin generators. We also characterise the geodesics with respect to the dual generators, which allows us to calculate the associated geodesic growth series.
A regular set of words is ($k$-)locally testable if membership of a word in the set is determined by the nature of its subwords of some bounded length $k$. In this article we study groups for which the set of all geodesic words with respect to some generating set is ($k$-)locally testable, and we call such groups ($k$-)locally testable. We show that a group is \klt{1} if and only if it is free abelian. We show that the class of ($k$-)locally testable groups is closed under taking finite direct products. We show also that a locally testable group has finitely many conjugacy classes of torsion e…
We prove that for any infinite right-angled Coxeter or Artin group, its spherical and geodesic growth rates (with respect to the standard generating set) either take values in the set of Perron numbers, or equal $1$. Also, we compute the average number of geodesics representing an element of given word length in such groups.
We describe a constructive, cubic time solution to the conjugacy problem in Artin groups of extra-large type, which was proved solvable in those groups by Appel and Schupp. We use results from two of our previous papers that characterise geodesic words in those groups, as well as the description of conjugacy between elements involving three or more generators that is given by Appel and Schupp.
We study braid diagrams with a minimal number of crossings. Such braid diagrams correspond to geodesic words for the braid groups with standard Artin generators. We prove that a diagram of a homogeneous braid is minimal if and only if it is homogeneous. We conjecture that monoids of homogeneous braids are Artin-Tits monoids and prove that monoids of alternating braids are right-angled Artin monoids. Using this, we give a lower bound on the growth rate of the braid groups.
Computing normal forms in groups (or monoids) is in general harder than solving the word problem (equality testing). However, normal form computation has a much wider range of applications. It is therefore interesting to investigate the complexity of computing normal forms for important classes of groups. For Coxeter groups we show that the following algorithmic tasks can be solved by a deterministic Turing machine using logarithmic work space, only: 1. Compute the length of any geodesic normal form. 2. Compute the set of letters occurring in any geodesic normal form. 3. Compute the Parikh-ima…
We prove that many Artin groups of large type satisfy the rapid decay property, including all those of extra-large type. For many of these, including all 3-generator groups of extra-large type, a result of Lafforgue applies to show that the groups satisfy the Baum-Connes conjecture without coefficients. Our proof of rapid decay combines elementary analysis with combinatorial techniques, and relies on properties of geodesic words in Artin groups of large type that were observed in an earlier publication by two of the authors of this current article.
The objective of this paper is to detect which combinatorial properties of a regular graph can completely determine the geodesic growth of the right-angled Coxeter or Artin group this graph defines, and to provide the first examples of right-angled and even Coxeter groups with the same geodesic growth series.
We give a group theoretic characterization of geodesics with superlinear divergence in the Cayley graph of a right-angled Artin group A(G) with connected defining graph G. We use this to determine when two points in an asymptotic cone of A(G) are separated by a cut-point. As an application, we show that if G does not decompose as the join of two subgraphs, then A(G) has an infinite-dimensional space of non-trivial quasimorphisms. By the work of Burger and Monod, this leads to a superrigidity theorem for homomorphisms from lattices into right-angled Artin groups.
We give a systematic exposition of memory-length algorithms for solving equations in noncommutative groups. This exposition clarifies some points untouched in earlier expositions. We then focus on the main ingredient in these attacks: Length functions. After a self-contained introduction to Garside groups, we describe length functions induced by the greedy normal form and by the rational normal form in these groups, and compare their worst-case performances. Our main concern is Artin's braid groups, with their two known Garside presentations, due to Artin and due to Birman-Ko-Lee (BKL). We sho…
We develop an analogy between right-angled Artin groups and mapping class groups through the geometry of their actions on the extension graph and the curve graph respectively. The central result in this paper is the fact that each right-angled Artin group acts acylindrically on its extension graph. From this result we are able to develop a Nielsen--Thurston classification for elements in the right-angled Artin group. Our analogy spans both the algebra regarding subgroups of right-angled Artin groups and mapping class groups, as well as the geometry of the extension graph and the curve graph. O…
We derive functional relationships between spherical generating functions of graph monoids, right-angled Artin groups and right-angled Coxeter groups. We use these relationships to express the spherical generating function of a right-angled Artin group in terms of the clique polynomial of its defining graph. We also describe algorithms for computing the geodesic generating functions of these structures.
We show that the full set of solutions to systems of equations and inequations in a hyperbolic group, as shortlex geodesic words (or any regular set of quasigeodesic normal forms), is an EDT0L language whose specification can be computed in NSPACE$(n^2\log n)$ for the torsion-free case and NSPACE$(n^4\log n)$ in the torsion case. Furthermore, in the presence of quasi-isometrically embeddable rational constraints, we show that the full set of solutions to systems of equations in a hyperbolic group remains EDT0L. Our work combines the geometric results of Rips, Sela, Dahmani and Guirardel on the…
A graph is Helly if every family of pairwise intersecting combinatorial balls has a nonempty intersection. We show that weak Garside groups of finite type and FC-type Artin groups are Helly, that is, they act geometrically on Helly graphs. In particular, such groups act geometrically on spaces with convex geodesic bicombing, equipping them with a nonpositive-curvature-like structure. That structure has many properties of a CAT(0) structure and, additionally, it has a combinatorial flavor implying biautomaticity. As immediate consequences we obtain new results for FC-type Artin groups (in parti…
We study the curvature of metric spaces and branched covers of Riemannian manifolds, with applications in topology and algebraic geometry. Here curvature bounds are expressed in terms of the CAT(k) inequality. We prove a general CAT(k) extension theorem, giving sufficient conditions on and near the boundary of a locally CAT(k) metric space for the completion to be CAT(k). We use this to prove that a branched cover of a complete Riemannian manifold is locally CAT(k) if and only if all tangent spaces are CAT(0) and the base has sectional curvature bounded above by k. We also show that the branch…
Let $G \curvearrowright X$ be a nonelementary action by isometries of a hyperbolic group $G$ on a hyperbolic metric space $X$. We show that the set of elements of $G$ which act as loxodromic isometries of $X$ is generic. That is, for any finite generating set of $G$, the proportion of $X$--loxodromics in the ball of radius $n$ about the identity in $G$ approaches $1$ as $n \to \infty$. We also establish several results about the behavior in $X$ of the images of typical geodesic rays in $G$; for example, we prove that they make linear progress in $X$ and converge to the Gromov boundary $\partia…
