At sufficiently low temperatures, condensed-matter systems tend to develop order. An exception are quantum spin-liquids, where fluctuations prevent a transition to an ordered state down to the lowest temperatures. While such states are possibly realized in two-dimensional organic compounds, they have remained elusive in experimentally relevant microscopic two-dimensional models. Here, we show by means of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations of correlated fermions on the honeycomb lattice, a structure realized in graphene, that a quantum spin-liquid emerges between the state described by massless Dirac fermions and an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator. This unexpected quantum-disordered state is found to be a short-range resonating valence bond liquid, akin to the one proposed for high temperature superconductors. Therefore, the possibility of unconventional superconductivity through doping arises. We foresee its realization with ultra-cold atoms or with honeycomb lattices made with group IV elements.
Through resistivity measurements of an organic crystal hosting massless Dirac fermions with a charge-ordering instability, we reveal the effect of interactions among Dirac fermions on the charge transport. A low-temperature resistivity upturn appears robustly irrespectively of pressure and is enhanced while approaching the critical pressure of charge ordering, indicating that the insulating behavior originates from short-range Coulomb interactions. Observation of apparently vanishing gap in the charge-ordered phase accords with the theoretical prediction of the non-topological edge states.
Double Dirac fermions have recently been identified as possible quasiparticles hosted by three-dimensional crystals with particular non-symmorphic point group symmetries. Applying a combined approach of ab-initio methods and dynamical mean field theory, we investigate how interactions and double Dirac band topology conspire to form the electronic quantum state of Bi$_2$CuO$_4$. We derive a downfolded eight-band model of the pristine material at low energies around the Fermi level. By tuning the model parameters from the free band structure to the realistic strongly correlated regime, we find a…
The periodized cluster dynamical mean-field theory (PCDMFT) combined with exact diagonalization as impurity solver has been applied to the half-filled standard Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. A correlated Dirac semimetal is found for weak interactions and it transforms into an antiferromagnetic insulating phase for strong interactions via a first-order quantum phase transition, not intervened by a spin liquid phase in between. In this application, the PCDMFT introduces the partial translation symmetry, but cures well the problem due to the translation symmetry breaking in the cluster d…
An interaction-driven nonzero quantum Hall conductivity is shown to occur in time-reversal symmetric massive Dirac materials, in the absence of any external agent. The effect is produced through the dynamical breakdown of time-reversal symmetry, which is generated by quantum fluctuations, when the full dynamical electromagnetic interaction among the electrons is taken into account. The manifestation of this emergent parity anomaly should be observed in materials such as silicene, stanene, germanene and transition metal dichalcogenides, at low enough temperatures.
The role of non-local Coulomb correlations in the honeycomb lattice is investigated within cluster dynamical mean field theory combined with finite-temperature exact diagonalization. The paramagnetic semi-metal to insulator transition is found to be in excellent agreement with finite-size determinantal Quantum Monte Carlo simulations and with cluster dynamical mean field calculations based on the continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo approach. As expected, the critical Coulomb energy is much lower than within a local or single-site formulation. Short-range correlations are shown to give rise to …
Substituting magnetic ions with nonmagnetic ions is a new way to study dilution. Using determinant quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we investigate an interacting Dirac fermion model with the on-site Coulomb repulsion being randomly zero on a fraction $x$ of sites. Based on conductivity, density of states and antiferromagnetic structure factor, our results reveal a novel intermediate insulating phase induced by the competition between dilution and repulsion. With increasing doping level of nonmagnetic ions, this nonmagnetic intermediate phase is found to emerge from the zero-temperature quantu…
Discovering Dirac fermions with novel properties has become an important front in condensed matter and materials sciences. Here, we report the observation of unusual Dirac fermion states in a strongly-correlated electron setting, which are uniquely distinct from those of graphene and conventional topological insulators. In strongly-correlated cerium monopnictides, we find two sets of highly anisotropic Dirac fermions that interpenetrate each other with negligible hybridization, and show a peculiar four-fold degeneracy where their Dirac nodes overlap. Despite the lack of protection by crystalli…
Using the variational cluster approximation (VCA) and the cluster perturbation theory, we study the finite temperature phase diagram of a half-depleted periodic Anderson model on the honeycomb lattice at half filling for a model of graphone, i.e., single-side hydrogenated graphene. The ground state of this model is found to be ferromagnetic (FM) semi-metal. The spin wave dispersion in the FM state is linear in momentum at zero temperature but becomes quadratic at finite temperatures, implying that the FM state is fragile against thermal fluctuations. Indeed, our VCA calculations find that the …
In the previous paper, we studied the random-mass Dirac fermion in one dimension by using the transfer-matrix methods and by introducing an imaginary vector potential in order to calculate the localization lengths. Especially we considered effects of the nonlocal but short-range correlations of the random mass. In this paper, we shall study effects of the long-range correlations of the random mass especially on the delocalization transition. The results depend on how randomness is introduced in the Dirac mass.
The classic composite fermion field theory (Ref. 1) builds up an excellent framework to uniformly study important physical objects and globally explain anomalous experimental phenomena in fractional quantum Hall physics while there are also inherent weaknesses. We present a nonperturbative emergent Dirac fermion theory from this strongly correlated composite fermion field theory, which overcomes these serious long-standing shortcomings. The particle-hole symmetry of Dirac equation resolves this particle-hole symmetry enigma in the composite fermion field theory. With the help of presented nume…
Recently, the most intensely studied objects in the electronic theory of solids have been strongly correlated systems and graphene. However, the fact that the Dirac bands in graphene are made up of $sp^{2}$-electrons, which are subject to neither strong Hubbard repulsion $U$ nor strong Hund's rule coupling $J$ creates certain limitations in terms of novel, interaction-induced physics that could be derived from Dirac points. Here we propose GaCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ (Ga-substituted herbertsmithite) as a correlated Dirac-Kagome metal combining Dirac electrons, strong interactions and frustrat…

Emergence of exceptional points in two dimensions is one of the remarkable phenomena in non-Hermitian systems. We here elucidate the impacts of symmetry on the non-Hermitian physics. Specifically, we analyze chiral symmetric correlated systems in equilibrium where the non-Hermitian phenomena are induced by the finite lifetime of quasi-particles. Intriguingly, our analysis reveals that the combination of symmetry and non-Hermiticity results in novel topological degeneracies of energy bands which we call symmetry-protected exceptional rings (SPERs). We observe the emergence of SPERs by analyzing…
The fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state is a topological state of matter resulting from the many-body effect of interacting electrons and is of vast interest in fundamental physics. The experimental observation of topological surface states (SSs) in three-dimensional bulk solids has allowed the study of a correlated chiral Dirac fermion system, which can host a single Dirac valley without spin degeneracy. Recent theoretical studies suggest that the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) might be observable in topological insulators. However, due to the dominant bulk conduction it is difficult t…
We study quantum criticality of the magnetic field induced charge density wave (CDW) order in correlated spinless Dirac fermions on the $π$-flux square lattice at zero temperature as a prototypical example of the magnetic catalysis, by using the infinite density matrix renormalization group. It is found that the CDW order parameter $M(B)$ exhibits an anomalous magnetic field $(B)$ scaling behavior characteristic of the $(2+1)$-dimensional chiral Ising universality class near the quantum critical point, which leads to a strong enhancement of $M(B)$ compared with a mean field result. We also est…
We investigate correlated insulating states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) by the exact diagonalization method applied to the extended Hubbard model with interaction parameters recently evaluated in the realistic effective model. Our model can handle the competing interactions among Wannier orbitals owing to their significant overlap, which is a crucial but overlooked aspect of the magic-angle TBG. We propose two candidates for the correlated insulating states: spin- and valley-ferromagnetic band insulator and the Dirac semimetallic state for two flavors with peculiar renormaliz…
The energy spectra for the tight-binding models on the Lieb and kagomé lattices both exhibit a flat band. We present a model which continuously interpolates between these two limits. The flat band located in the middle of the three-band spectrum for the Lieb lattice is distorted, generating two pairs of Dirac points. While the upper pair evolves into graphene-like Dirac cones in the kagomé limit, the low energy pair evolves until it merges producing the band-bottom flat band. The topological characterization of the Dirac points is achieved by projecting the Hamiltonian on the two relevant band…
A new scheme of first-principles computation for strongly correlated electron systems is proposed. This scheme starts from the local-density approximation (LDA) at high-energy band structure, while the low-energy effective Hamiltonian is constructed by a downfolding procedure using combinations of the constrained LDA and the GW method. Thus obtained low-energy Hamiltonian is solved by the path-integral renormalization-group method, where spatial and dynamical fluctuations are fully considered. An application to Sr$_2$VO$_4$ shows that the scheme is powerful in agreement with experimental resul…
We investigate the interplay between the strong correlation and the spin-orbital coupling in the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model and obtain the qualitative phase diagram via the variational cluster approach. We identify, through an increase of the Hubbard $U$, the transition from the topological band insulator to either the spin liquid phase or the easy-plane antiferromagnetic insulating phase, depending on the strength of the spin-orbit coupling. A nontrivial evolution of the bulk bands in the topological quantum phase transition is also demonstrated.
We study orbital diamagnetism at zero temperature in $(2+1)$-dimensional Dirac fermions with a short-range interaction which exhibits a quantum phase transition to a charge density wave (CDW) phase. We introduce orbital magnetic fields into spinless Dirac fermions on the $π$-flux square lattice, and analyze them by using infinite density matrix renormalization group. It is found that the diamagnetism remains intact in the Dirac semimetal regime as a result of a non-trivial competition between the enhanced Fermi velocity and magnetic-field-induced mass gap, while it is monotonically suppressed …
Orthorhombic CuMnAs has been proposed as an antiferromagnetic semimetal hosting nodal line and Dirac points around the Fermi level. We investigate relations between the topological bands and transport phenomena, i.e. spin Hall effect and anomalous Hall effect, in orthorhombic CuMnAs with first-principles calculations combined with symmetry analysis of magnetic structures and of (spin) Berry curvature. We show the nodal line gapped with spin-orbit coupling in CuMnAs dominantly generates large spin Hall conductivity in the ground state. Although the magnetic symmetry in the ground state of CuMnA…

Dirac fermions play a central role in the study of topological phases, for they can generate a variety of exotic states, such as Weyl semimetals and topological insulators. The control and manipulation of Dirac fermions constitute a fundamental step towards the realization of novel concepts of electronic devices and quantum computation. By means of ARPES experiments and ab initio simulations, here we show that Dirac states can be effectively tuned by doping a transition metal sulfide, BaNiS2, through Co/Ni substitution. The symmetry and chemical characteristics of this material, combined with …
The interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom in strongly correlated fermionic systems, in particular of Dirac fermions, is a long-standing problem in condensed matter physics. We investigate the competing orders in the half-filled SU(2N) Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, which can be accurately realized in optical lattices with large-spin ultra-cold alkaline-earth fermions. Employing large-scale projector determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we have explored quantum phase transitions from the gapless Dirac semi-metals to the gapped Mott-insulating phases in the SU(4) an…
Kondo insulators are primary candidates in the search for strongly correlated topological quantum phases, which may host topological order, fractionalization, and non-Abelian statistics. Within some Kondo insulators, the hybridization gap is predicted to protect a nontrivial topological invariant and to harbor emergent heavy Dirac fermion surface modes. We use high-energy-resolution spectroscopic imaging in real and momentum space on the Kondo insulator, SmB$_6$. On cooling through $T^*_Δ\approx$ 35 K we observe the opening of an insulating gap that expands to $Δ\approx$ 10 meV at 2 K. Within …
To determine how electron correlations open a gap in two-dimensional massless Dirac electrons in the organic compounds $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ [$α$-(ET)$_2$I$_3$] and $α$-(BEDT-TSeF)$_2$I$_3$ [$α$-(BETS)$_2$I$_3$], we derive and analyze $ab$ $initio$ low-energy effective Hamiltonians for these two compounds. We find that the horizontal stripe charge ordering opens a gap in the massless Dirac electrons in $α$-(ET)$_2$I$_3$, while an insulating phase without explicit symmetry breaking appears in $α$-(BETS)$_2$I$_3$. We clarify that the combination of the anisotropic transfer integrals and the el…
Mirror-symmetric magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (MATTG) hosts flat electronic bands close to zero energy, and has been recently shown to exhibit abundant correlated quantum phases with flexible electrical tunability. However studying these phases proved challenging as these are obscured by intertwined Dirac bands. In this work, we demonstrate a novel spectroscopy technique, that allows to quantify the energy gaps and Chern numbers of the correlated states in MATTG by driving band crossings between Dirac cone Landau levels and the energy gaps in the flat bands. We uncover hard correlated…
The field of topological electronic materials has seen rapid growth in recent years, in particular with the increasing number of weakly interacting systems predicted and observed to host topologically non-trivial bands. Given the broad appearance of topology in such systems, it is expected that correlated electronic systems should also be capable of hosting topologically non-trivial states. Interest in correlated platforms is heightened by the prospect that collective behavior therein may give rise to new types of topological states and phenomena not possible in non-interacting systems. Howeve…
Density functional theory calculations with an on-site Coulomb repulsion term (GGA+U method) reveal competing ground states in (111) oriented (LaAlO$_3$)$_M$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_N$ superlattices with n-type interfaces, ranging from spin, orbital polarized, Dirac point Fermi surface to charge ordered flat band phases. These are steered by the interplay of (i) Hubbard U, (ii) SrTiO$_3$ quantum well thickness and (iii) crystal field spitting tied to in-plane strain. In the honeycomb lattice bilayer case N=2 under tensile strain inversion symmetry breaking drives the system from a ferromagnetic Dirac poi…
The search for materials with novel and unusual electronic properties is at the heart of condensed matter physics as well as the basis to develop conceptual new technologies. In this context, the correlated honeycomb transition metal oxides attract large attention for both, being a possible experimental realization of the theoretically predicted magnetic Kitaev exchange and the theoretical prospect of topological nontriviality. The Mott insulating sodium iridate is prototypical among these materials with the promising prospect to bridge the field of strongly correlated systems with topology, f…
The charge-ordered insulator $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ gradually evolves to a metal when pressure is applied, and at low temperatures the electronic bands form tilted Dirac-like cones. A metallic state with a frequency-independent optical conductivity indicates the coexistence of the trivial and massless Dirac electrons in the system. Our infrared investigations also reveal that at the boundary between insulating and metallic states an energy gap opens due to correlated massive Dirac fermions, which is gradually suppressed when pressure increases.
Searching for $p+ip$ superconducting(SC) state has become a fascinating subject in condensed matter physics, as a dream application awaiting in topological quantum computation. In this paper, we report a theoretical discovery of a $p+ip$ SC ground state (coexisting with ferromagnetic order) in honeycomb lattice Hubbard model with infinite repulsive interaction at low doping($δ< 0.2$), by using both the state-of-art Grassmann tensor product state(GTPS) approach and a quantum field theory approach. Our discovery suggests a new mechanism for $p+ip$ SC state in generic strongly correlated systems …
An unbiased zero-temperature auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method is employed to analyze the nature of the semimetallic phase of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice at half filling. It is shown that the quasiparticle weight $Z$ of the massless Dirac fermions at the Fermi level, which characterizes the coherence of zero-energy single-particle excitations, can be evaluated in terms of the long-distance equal-time single-particle Green's function. If this quantity remains finite in the thermodynamic limit, the low-energy single-particle excitations of the correlated s…
A novel gapped metallic state coined orthogonal Dirac semimetal is proposed in the honeycomb lattice in terms of $Z_{2}$ slave-spin representation of Hubbard model. This state corresponds to the disordered phase of slave-spin and has the same thermaldynamical and transport properties as usual Dirac semimetal but its singe-particle excitation is gapped and has nontrivial topological order due to the $Z_{2}$ gauge structure. The quantum phase transition from this orthogonal Dirac semimetal to usual Dirac semimetal is described by a mean-field decoupling with complementary fluctuation analysis an…
Nd2Ir2O7 is a correlated semimetal with the pyrochlore structure, in which competing spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions are believed to induce a time-reversal symmetry broken Weyl semimetal phase characterized by pairs of topologically protected Dirac points at the Fermi energy. However, the emergent properties in these materials are far from clear, and exotic new states of matter have been conjectured. Here we demonstrate optically that at low temperatures the free carrier spectral weight is proportional to T^2 where T is the temperature, as expected for massless Dirac ele…
We report discovery of a topological Mott insulator in strongly-correlated Dirac semimetals. Such an interaction-driven topological state has been theoretically proposed but not yet observed with unbiased large scale numerical simulations. In our model, interactions between electrons are mediated by Ising spins in a transverse field. The results indicate that the topological mass term is dynamically generated and the resulting quantum phase transition belongs to the (2+1)D $N=8$ chiral Ising universality class. These conclusions stem from large scale sign free quantum Monte Carlo simulations.
We present a compelling response of a low-dimensional strongly correlated system to an external perturbation. Using the time-dependent Lanczos method we investigate a nonequilibrium evolution of the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, driven by a transient laser pulse. When the system is close to the phase boundary, by tuning the laser frequency and strength, a sustainable charge order enhancement is found that is absent in the Mott insulating phase. We analyze the conditions and investigate possible mechanisms of emerging charge order enhancement. Feasible experimental realiza…
Disordered 2D chiral fermions provide an effective description of several materials including graphene and topological insulators. While previous analysis considered delta correlated disorder and no ultraviolet cut-offs, we consider here the effect of short range correlated disorder and the presence of a momentum cut-off, providing a more realistic description of condensed matter models. We show that the density of states is anomalous with a critical exponent function of the disorder and that conductivity is universal only when the ultraviolet cut-off is removed, as consequence of the supersym…
We investigate the properties of the nearest-neighbor singlet pairing and the emergence of d-wave superconductivity in the doped honeycomb lattice considering the limit of large interactions and the $t-J_1-J_2$ model. First, by applying a renormalized mean-field procedure as well as slave-boson theories which account for the proximity to the Mott insulating state, we confirm the emergence of d-wave superconductivity in agreement with earlier works. We show that a small but finite $J_2$ spin coupling between next-nearest neighbors stabilizes d-wave symmetry compared to the extended s-wave scena…
Strongly correlated Kagome magnets are promising candidates for achieving controllable topological devices owing to the rich interplay between inherent Dirac fermions and correlation-driven magnetism. Here we report tunable local magnetism and its intriguing control of topological electronic response near room temperature in the Kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 using small angle neutron scattering, muon spin rotation, and magnetoresistivity measurement techniques. The average bulk spin direction and magnetic domain texture can be tuned effectively by small magnetic fields. Magnetoresistivity, in response,…
A partially filled Landau level (LL) hosts a variety of correlated states of matter with unique properties. The ability to control these phases requires tuning the effective electron interactions within a LL, which has been difficult to achieve in GaAs-based structures. Here we consider a class of Dirac materials in which the chiral band structure, along with the mass term, gives rise to a wide tunability of the effective interactions by the magnetic field. This tunability is such that different phases can occur in a single LL, and phase transitions between them can be driven in situ. The inco…
