We propose and analyze a new approach to generate a broadband astro-comb by spectral broadening of a narrowband astro-comb inside a highly nonlinear optical fiber. Numerical modeling shows that cascaded four-wave-mixing dramatically degrades the input comb's side-mode suppression and causes side-mode amplitude asymmetry. These two detrimental effects can systematically shift the center-of-gravity of astro-comb spectral lines as measured by an astrophysical spectrograph with resolution \approx100,000; and thus lead to wavelength calibration inaccuracy and instability. Our simulations indicate that this performance penalty, as a result of nonlinear spectral broadening, can be compensated by using a filtering cavity configured for double-pass. As an explicit example, we present a design based on an Yb-fiber source comb (with 1 GHz repetition rate) that is filtered by double-passing through a low finesse cavity (finesse = 208), and subsequent spectrally broadened in a 2-cm, SF6-glass photonic crystal fiber. Spanning more than 300 nm with 16 GHz line spacing, the resulting astro-comb is predicted to provide 1 cm/s (~10 kHz) radial velocity calibration accuracy for an astrophysical spectrograph. Such extreme performance will be necessary for the search for and characterization of Earth-like extra-solar planets, and in direct measurements of the change of the rate of cosmological expansion.
Self-referencing turns pulsed laser systems into self-referenced frequency combs. Such frequency combs allow counting of optical frequencies and have a wide range of applications. The required optical bandwidth to implement self-referencing is typically obtained via nonlinear broadening in optical fibers. Recent advances in the field of Kerr frequency combs have provided a path towards the development of compact frequency comb sources that provide broadband frequency combs, exhibit microwave repetition rates and that are compatible with on-chip photonic integration. These devices have the pote…
Si$_3$N$_4$ waveguides, pumped at 1550 nm, can provide spectrally smooth, broadband light for gas spectroscopy in the important 2 ${\mathrmμ}$m to 2.5 ${\mathrmμ}$m atmospheric water window, which is only partially accessible with silica-fiber based systems. By combining Er+:fiber frequency combs and supercontinuum generation in tailored Si$_3$N$_4$ waveguides, high signal-to-noise dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS) spanning 2 ${\mathrmμ}$m to 2.5 ${\mathrmμ}$m is demonstrated. Acquired broadband dual-comb spectra of CO and CO$_2$ agree well with database line shape models and have a spectral-signal…
The importance of inter-particle radiation for clusters of gray and diffuse particles is investigated. The radiative cooling of each individual particle is found to vary strongly with its position in the cluster, and a mean radiative particle cooling term is proposed for single particle simulations of particle clusters or for high detail simulation, like Direct Numerical Simulations of small sub-volumes of large clusters of particles. Radiative cooling is shown to be important both for furnaces for coal gasification and coal combustion. Broadening the particle size distribution is found to hav…
We demonstrate efficient generation of coherent super-octave pulses via a single-stage spectral broadening of a Yb:KGW laser in a single, pressurized, Ne-filled, hollow-core fiber capillary. Emerging pulses spectrally spanning over more than $\sim$1 PHz (250 nm- 1600 nm) at a dynamic range of $\sim$60 dB, and an excellent beam quality open the door to combining Yb:KGW lasers with modern light field synthesis techniques. Compression of a fraction of the generated supercontinuum to intense (8 fs, $\sim$2.4 cycle, $\sim$650 $μ$J) pulses allows convenient use of these novel laser sources in strong…
Using a turn-key Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser frequency comb, an off-the-shelf supercontinuum device, and Fabry-Perot mode filters, we report the generation of a 16 GHz frequency comb spanning a 90 nm band about a center wavelength of 566 nm. The light from this astro-comb is used to calibrate the HARPS-N astrophysical spectrograph for precision radial velocity measurements. The comb-calibrated spectrograph achieves a stability of $\sim$ 1 cm/s within half an hour of averaging time. We also use the astro-comb as a reference for measurements of solar spectra obtained with a compact telescope, …
As Ultrafast laser technology advances towards ever higher peak and average powers, generating sub-50 fs pulses from laser architectures that exhibit best power-scaling capabilities remains a major challenge. Here, we present a very compact and highly robust method to compress 1.24 ps pulses to 39 fs by means of only a single spectral broadening stage which neither requires vacuum parts nor custom-made optics. Our approach is based on the hybridization of the multi-plate continuum and the multi-pass cell spectral broadening techniques. Their combination leads to significantly higher spectral b…
We report on the observation of puzzling nonuniform, but ordered, frequency combs in erbium-doped fiber lasers at low temperatures, between 3 K and 14 K. At ~14 K the combs disappear. The combs contain ~240 lines and have nonuniform frequency spacings that starts from ~25 GHz at ~1540.5 nm and decreases, almost monotonically, to ~100 MHz within (1.8-2) nm. We discuss possibilities that they result from enlarged regular mode-comb spacings, from prime numbers-based solitary waves free of four-wave mixing or result from gain gratings. However, we think that the combs originate from multi-lasing l…
The phenomenon of linewidth continuously broadening along with the recirculation number in recirculating frequency shifting loop is observed. In this paper, a novel method of measuring the phase noise accumulation induced by EDFA in recirculating frequency shifting loop is proposed and the experiment results support the viewpoint of the laser linewidth will be broadening by EDFA. An empirical formula has been extracted to estimate the linewidth deterioration of the RFS output. We demonstrate the relationship between the linewidth and the recirculation number of the RFS based optical frequency …
A 12.5 GHz-spaced optical frequency comb locked to a Global Positioning disciplined oscillator for near-IR spectrograph calibration is presented. The comb is generated via filtering a 250 MHz-spaced comb. Subsequency nonlinear broadening of the 12.5 GHz comb extends the wavelength range to cover 1380 nm to 1820 nm, providing complete coverage over the H-band transmission widow of Earth's atmosphere. Finite suppression of spurious sidemodes, optical linewidth and instability of the comb have been examined to estmiate potential wavelength biases in spectrograph calibration. Sidemode suppression …
A compact green astro-comb with 43-GHz repetition rate is developed based on a Ti:Sapphire optical frequency comb (OFC) and a mode-selecting cavity. The OFC's large repetition rate of 1.6 GHz eases the requirements for the mode-selecting cavity. Unnecessary frequency-modes of the OFC are suppressed down to $5 \times 10^{-4}$ at 535 nm - 550 nm using a single mode-selecting cavity with 70-MHz linewidth. The radial velocity precision $σ\sim 1.4$ m/s is achieved at the High Dispersion Echelle Spectrosraph for the Okayama 188-cm telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan using our…
Improved wavelength calibrators for high-resolution astrophysical spectrographs will be essential for precision radial velocity (RV) detection of Earth-like exoplanets and direct observation of cosmological deceleration. The astro-comb is a combination of an octave-spanning femtosecond laser frequency comb and a Fabry-Pérot cavity used to achieve calibrator line spacings that can be resolved by an astrophysical spectrograph. Systematic spectral shifts associated with the cavity can be 0.1-1 MHz, corresponding to RV errors of 10-100 cm/s, due to the dispersive properties of the cavity mirrors o…
We demonstrate a compact 29.3 GHz visible astro-comb covering the spectrum from 560nm to 700nm. A 837 MHz Yb:fiber laser frequency comb phase locked to a Rb clock served as the seed comb to ensure the frequency stability and high side mode suppression ratio. After the visible super-continuum generation, a cavity-length-fixed Fabry-Perot cavity made by ultra-low expansion glass was utilized to filter the comb teeth for eliminating the rapid active dithering. The mirrors were home-made complementary chirped mirrors pair with zero dispersion and high reflection to guarantee no mode skipping. Thes…
The method of Doppler - free comb - spectroscopy for dipole transitions was proposed. The calculations for susceptibility spectrum for moving two-level atoms driving by strong counter propagating combs have been done. The used theoretical method based on the Fourier expansion of the components of density matrix on two rows on kv (v-velocity of group of atoms, k-projection of wave vector) and Ω (frequency between comb components). For testing of validity of this method the direct numerical integration was done. The narrow peaks with homogeneous width arise on the background of Doppler counter. …
Optical frequency combs generated by multiple four-wave mixing of two stabilized single-frequency lasers in optical fibers are proposed for use as high precision frequency markers, calibration of astrophysical spectrometers and metrology. Use of highly nonlinear and photonic crystal fibers with very short lengths and small group velocity dispersion, combined with energy and momentum conservation required by the parametric generation, assures negligible phase mismatch between comb frequencies. In contrast to combs from mode-locked lasers or microcavities, the absence of a resonator allows large…
In this work, control over the precise state emitted by quantum cascade laser frequency combs through strong radio-frequency current modulation close to their repetition frequency is demonstrated. In particular, broadening of the spectrum from about 20 cm$^{-1}$ to 60cm$^{-1}$ can be achieved throughout most of the current dynamical range while preserving the coherence, as measured by shifted wave interference Fourier transform spectroscopy (SWIFTS). The required modulation frequency to achieve this broadening is red-shifted compared to the free-running beatnote frequency at increasing modulat…
The quest for extrasolar planets and their characterisation as well as studies of fundamental physics on cosmological scales rely on capabilities of high-resolution astronomical spectroscopy. A central requirement is a precise wavelength calibration of astronomical spectrographs allowing for extraction of subtle wavelength shifts from the spectra of stars and quasars. Here, we present an all-fibre, 400 nm wide near-infrared frequency comb based on electro-optic modulation with 14.5 GHz comb line spacing. Tests on the high-resolution, near-infrared spectrometer GIANO-B show a photon-noise limit…
The phase information provided by the beat note between frequency combs and two continuous-wave lasers is used to extrapolate the phase evolution of comb modes found in a spectral region obtained via nonlinear broadening. This thereafter enables using interferogram self-correction to fully retrieve the coherence of a dual-comb beat note between two independent fiber lasers. This approach allows to forego the $f - 2f$ self-referencing of both combs, which is a significant simplification. Broadband near-infrared methane spectroscopy has been conducted as a demonstration of the simplified system'…
