We study the BGK approximation to first-order scalar conservation laws with a flux which is discontinuous in the space variable. We show that the Cauchy Problem for the BGK approximation is well-posed and that, as the relaxation parameter tends to 0, it converges to the (entropy) solution of the limit problem.
We study the derivation of a scalar conservation law with stochastic forcing starting from a stochastic BGK model with a high-field scaling. We prove the convergence to a new kinetic formulation where appears a modified Maxwellian. We deduce from it the existence of a weak solution to the scalar conservation law with stochastic forcing. We establish that this solution satisfies some Krushkov-like entropy relations.
This paper deals with an optimal control problem and describes the reachable set for the scalar 1-D conservation laws with discontinuous flux. Regarding the optimal control problem we first prove the existence of a minimizer and then we prescribe an algorithm to compute it. The same method also applies to compute the initial data control. The proof relies on the explicit formula for the conservation laws with the discontinuous flux and finer properties of the characteristics.
Solutions to a class of conservation laws with discontinuous flux are constructed relying on the Crandall-Liggett theory of nonlinear contractive semigroups~\cite{CL}. In particular, the paper studies the existence of backward Euler approximations, and their convergence to a unique entropy-admissible solution to the Cauchy problem. The proofs are achieved through the study of the backward Euler approximations to the viscous conservation laws.
In this work we study variational properties of approximate solutions of scalar conservation laws. Solutions of this type are described by a kinetic equation which is similar to the kinetic representation of admissible weak solutions due to Lions-Perthame-Tadmor, but also retain small scale non-equilibrium behavior. We show that approximate solutions can be obtained from a BGK-type equation with equilibrium densities satisfying Gibb's entropy minimization principle.
We study nonlocal conservation laws with a discontinuous flux function of regularity $\mathsf{L}^{\infty}(\mathbb{R})$ in the spatial variable and show existence and uniqueness of weak solutions in $\mathsf{C}\big([0,T];\mathsf{L}^{1}_{\text{loc}}(\mathbb{R})\big)$, as well as related maximum principles. We achieve this well-posedness by a proper reformulation in terms of a fixed-point problem. This fixed-point problem itself necessitates the study of existence, uniqueness and stability of a class of discontinuous ordinary differential equations. On the ODE level, we compare the solution type …
We prove a uniqueness result for BV solutions of scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux in several space dimensions. The proof is based on the notion of kinetic solution and on a careful analysis of the entropy dissipation along the discontinuities of the flux.
We propose new Kruzhkov type entropy conditions for one dimensional scalar conservation law with a discontinuous flux. We prove existence and uniqueness of the entropy admissible weak solution to the corresponding Cauchy problem merely under assumptions on the flux which provide the maximum principle. In particular, we allow multiple flux crossings and we do not need any kind of genuine nonlinearity conditions.
We prove the well-posedness of entropy weak solutions for a class of space-discontinuous scalar conservation laws with non-local flux arising in traffic modeling. We approximate the problem adding a viscosity term and we provide $L^\infty$ and BV estimates for the approximate solutions. We use the doubling of variable technique to prove the stability with respect to the initial data from the entropy condition.
We study compactness properties of time-discrete and continuous time BGK-type schemes for scalar conservation laws, in which microscopic interactions occur only when the state of a system deviates significantly from an equilibrium distribution. The threshold deviation, $ε,$ is a parameter of the problem. In the vanishing relaxation time limit we obtain solutions of a conservation law in which flux is pointwisely close (of order $ε$) to the flux of the original equation and derive several other properties of such solutions, including an example of approximate solution to a shock for Burger's eq…
Burger et al.in \cite{karlsen-1} proposed a flux TVD (FTVD) second order scheme by using a new non local limiter algorithm for conservation laws with discontinuous flux modeling clarifier thickener units. In this work we show that their idea of constructing FTVD second order schemes also can be used to construct second order schemes satisfying (A,B)-entropy condition for the scalar conservation law with discontinuous flux with proper modification at the interface. We present numerical experiments to show the superiority of the second order schemes over the monotone first order schemes. We show…
We investigate the structure of solutions of conservation laws with discontinuous flux under quite general assumption on the flux. We show that any entropy solution admits traces on the discontinuity set of the coefficients and we use this to prove the validity of a generalized Kato inequality for any pair of solutions. Applications to uniqueness of solutions are then given.
Let $H$ be a bounded and Lipschitz continuous function. We consider discontinuous viscosity solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation $U_{t}+H(U_x)=0$ and signed Radon measure valued entropy solutions of the conservation law $u_{t}+[H(u)]_x=0$. After having proved a precise statement of the formal relation $U_x=u$, we establish estimates for the (strictly positive!) times at which singularities of the solutions disappear. Here singularities are jump discontinuities in case of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation and signed singular measures in case of the conservation law.
In this contribution we study the singular limit problem of a nonlocal conservation law with a discontinuity in space. The specific choice of the nonlocal kernel involving the spatial discontinuity as well enables it to obtain a maximum principle for the nonlocal equation. The corresponding local equation can be transformed diffeomorphically to a classical scalar conservation law where the well-know Kružkov theory can be applied. However, the nonlocal equation does not scale that way which is why the study of convergence is interesting to pursue. For exponential kernels in the nonlocal operato…
The initial boundary value problem for a class of scalar non autonomous conservation laws in one space dimension is proved to be well posed and stable with respect to variations in the flux. Targeting applications to traffic, the regularity assumptions on the flow are extended to a merely $\mathbf{L}^{\infty}$ dependence on time. These results ensure, for instance, the well posedness of a class of vehicular traffic models with time dependent speed limits. A traffic management problem is then shown to admit an optimal solution.
This article deals with the regularity of the entropy solutions of scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux. It is well-known [Adimurthi et al., Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 2011] that the entropy solution for such equation does not admit BV regularity in general, even when the initial data belongs to BV. Due to this phenomenon fractional BVs spaces wider than BV are required, where the exponent 0<s\leq 1 and BV = BV1. It is a long standing open question to find the optimal regularizing effect for the discontinuous flux with L^\infty initial data. The optimal regularizing effect in BVs is pr…
We introduce the notion of entropy solutions (e.s.) to a conservation law with an arbitrary jump continuous flux vector and prove existence of the largest and the smallest e.s. to the Cauchy problem. The monotonicity and stability properties of these solutions are also established. In the case of a periodic initial function we derive the uniqueness of e.s. Generally, the uniqueness property can be violated, which is confirmed by an example. Finally, we proved that in the case of single space variable a weak limit of a sequence of spatially periodic e.s. is an e.s. as well.
This paper describes the reachable set and resolves an optimal control problem for the scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux. We give a necessary and sufficient criteria for the reachable set. A new backward resolution has been described to obtain the reachable set. Regarding the optimal control problem we first prove the existence of a minimizer and then the backward algorithm allows us to compute it. The same method also applies to compute the initial data control for an exact control problem. Our methodology for the proof relies on the explicit formula for the conservation laws w…
We deal with the Cauchy problem for multi-dimensional scalar conservation laws, where the fluxes and the source terms can be discontinuous functions of the unknown. The main novelty of the paper is the introduction of a~kinetic formulation for the considered problem. To handle the discontinuities we work in the framework of re-parametrization of the flux and the source functions, which was previously used for Kružkov entropy solutions. Within this approach we obtain a fairly complete picture: existence of entropy measure valued solutions, entropy weak solutions and their equivalence to the kin…
We study a BGK-like approximation to hyperbolic conservation laws forced by a multiplicative noise. First, we make use of the stochastic characteristics method and establish the existence of a solution for any fi xed parameter $\varepsilon$. In the next step, we investigate the limit as $\varepsilon$ tends to 0 and show the convergence to the kinetic solution of the limit problem.
We propose new entropy admissibility conditions for multidimensional hyperbolic scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux which generalize one-dimensional Karlsen-Risebro-Towers entropy conditions. These new conditions are designed, in particular, in order to characterize the limit of vanishing viscosity approximations. On the one hand, they comply quite naturally with a certain class of physical and numerical modeling assumptions; on the other hand, their mathematical assessment turns out to be intricate. \smallskip The generalization we propose is not only with respect to the space di…
We construct a high order discontinuous Galerkin method for solving general hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. The method is CFL-less, matrix-free, has the complexity of an explicit scheme and can be of arbitrary order in space and time. The construction is based on: (a) the representation of the system of conservation laws by a kinetic vectorial representation with a stiff relaxation term; (b) a matrix-free, CFL-less implicit discontinuous Galerkin transport solver; and (c) a stiffly accurate composition method for time integration. The method is validated on several one-dimensional tes…
We prove that adapted entropy solutions of scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux are stable with respect to changes in the flux under the assumption that the flux is strictly monotone in u and the spatial dependency is piecewise constant with finitely many discontinuities. We use this stability result to prove a convergence rate for the front tracking method -- a numerical method which is widely used in the field of conservation laws with discontinuous flux. To the best of our knowledge, both of these results are the first of their kind in the literature on conservation laws with di…
We perform the nonlinear stability analysis of a chemotaxis model of bacterial self-organization, assuming that bacteria respond sharply to chemical signals. The resulting discontinuous advection speed represents the key challenge for the stability analysis. We follow a perturbative approach, where the shape of the cellular profile is clearly separated from its global motion, allowing us to circumvent the discontinuity issue. Further, the homogeneity of the problem leads to two conservation laws, which express themselves in differently weighted functional spaces. This discrepancy between the w…
In this paper, we discuss the total variation bound for the solution of scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux. We prove the smoothing effect of the equation forcing the $BV_{loc}$ solution near the interface for $L^\infty$ initial data without the assumption on the uniform convexity of the fluxes made as in [1,21]. The proof relies on the method of characteristics and the explicit formulas.
This article concerns a scalar multidimensional conservation law where the flux is of Panov type and may contain spatial discontinuities. We define a notion of entropy solution and prove that entropy solutions are unique. We propose a Godunov-type finite volume scheme and prove that the Godunov approximations converge to an entropy solution, thus establishing existence of entropy solutions. We also show that our numerical scheme converges at an optimal rate of $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{\D t}).$ To the best of our knowledge, convergence of the Godunov type methods in multi-dimension and error estimate…
Stabilizing Discontinuous Galerkin Methods Using Dafermos' Entropy Rate Criterion: II -- Systems of Conservation Laws and Entropy Inequality Predictors
A variety of real-world applications are modeled via hyperbolic conservation laws. To account for uncertainties or insufficient measurements, random coefficients may be incorporated. These random fields may depend discontinuously on the state space, e.g., to represent permeability in a heterogeneous or fractured medium. We introduce a suitable admissibility criterion for the resulting stochastic discontinuous-flux conservation law and prove its well-posedness. Therefore, we ensure the pathwise existence and uniqueness of the corresponding deterministic setting and present a novel proof for the…
We consider the Rosenau equation, which contains nonlinear dispersive effects. We prove that as the diffusion parameter tends to zero, the solutions of the dispersive equation converge to discontinuous weak solution of the Burgers equation. The proof relies on deriving suitable a priori estimates together with an application of the compensated compactness method in the L^p setting.
In this paper we prove a nonautonomous chain rule formula for the distributional divergence of the composite function $\boldsymbol{v}(x)=\boldsymbol{B}(x,u(x))$, where $\boldsymbol{B}(\cdot,t)$ is a divergence--measure vector field and $u$ is a function of bounded variation. As an application, we prove a uniqueness result for scalar conservation laws with discontinuous flux.
We study the following class of scalar hyperbolic conservation laws with discontinuous fluxes: \partial_tρ+\partial_xF(x,ρ)=0. The main feature of such a conservation law is the discontinuity of the flux function in the space variable x. Kruzkov's approach for the L1-contraction does not apply since it requires the Lipschitz continuity of the flux function; and entropy solutions even for the Riemann problem are not unique under the classical entropy conditions. On the other hand, it is known that, in statistical mechanics, some microscopic interacting particle systems with discontinuous speed …
Consider a scalar conservation law with discontinuous flux \begin{equation*}\tag{1} \quad u_{t}+f(x,u)_{x}=0, \qquad f(x,u)= \begin{cases} f_l(u)\ &\text{if}\ x<0,\\ f_r(u)\ & \text{if} \ x>0, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $u=u(x,t)$ is the state variable and $f_{l}$, $f_{r}$ are strictly convex maps. We study the Cauchy problem for (1) from the point of view of control theory regarding the initial datum as a control. Letting $u(x,t)\doteq \mathcal{S}_t^{AB} \overline u(x)$ denote the solution of the Cauchy problem for (1), with initial datum $u(\cdot,0)=\overline u$, that satisfy at $x=0$…
