We analyze the symmetry breaking of matter-wave solitons in a pair of cigar-shaped traps coupled by tunneling of atoms. The model is based on a system of linearly coupled nonpolynomial Schrödinger equations (NPSEs). Unlike the well-known spontaneous-symmetry-breaking (SSB) bifurcation in coupled cubic equations, in the present model the SSB competes with the onset of collapse in this system. Stability regions of symmetric and asymmetric solitons, as well as the collapse region, are identified in the parameter space of the system.

We explore the phase diagram of a finite-sized dysprosium dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a cylindrical harmonic trap. We monitor the final state after the scattering length is lowered from the repulsive BEC regime to the quantum droplet regime. Either an adiabatic transformation between a BEC and a quantum droplet is obtained or, above a critical trap aspect ratio $λ_{\rm c}=1.87(14)$, a modulational instability results in the formation of multiple droplets. This is in full agreement with the predicted structure of the phase diagram with a crossover region below $λ_{\rm c}$ and a multista…
We provide a framework to solve generic models describing the dissociation of multiple molecular Bose-Einstein condensates in a nonadiabatic regime. The competition between individual chemical reactions can lead to non-trivial dependence on critical components such as path interference and symmetries, thus, affecting the final distribution of atomic population. We find an analytical solution for an illustrative example model involving four atomic modes. When the system parameters satisfy $CPT$ symmetry, where $C$ is charge conjugation, $P$ is parity, and $T$ is time-reversal symmetry, our solu…
We study analytically and numerically the condensation of a driven-dissipative exciton-polariton system using symmetric nonresonant pumping geometries. We show that the lowest condensation threshold solution carries a definite parity as a consequence of the symmetric excitation profile. At higher pump intensities competition between the two parities can result in critical quenching of one and saturation of the other. Using long pump channels, we show that the competition of the condensate parities gives rise to a different type of topologically stable defect propagating indefinitely along the …
Granulation of quantum matter -- the formation of persistent small-scale patterns -- is realized in the images of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates perturbed by a periodically modulated interaction. Our present analysis of a mean-field approximation suggests that granulation is caused by the gradual transformation of phase undulations into density undulations. This is achieved by a suitably large modulation frequency, while for low enough frequencies the system exhibits a quasi-adiabatic regime. We show that the persistence of granulation is a result of the irregular evolution of…
We consider large rings of weakly-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, analyzing their transition to chaotic dynamics and loss of coherence. Initially, a ring is considered to be in an eigenstate, i.e. in a commensurate configuration with equal site fillings and equal phase differences between neighboring sites. Such a ring should exhibit a circulating current whose value will depend on the initial, non-zero phase difference. The appearance of such currents is a signature of an established coherence along the ring. If phase difference falls between $π/2$ and $3π/2$ and interparticle interaction …
We analyse the formation and the dynamics of quantum turbulence in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate with a Josephson junction barrier modelled using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show that a sufficiently high initial superfluid density imbalance leads to randomisation of the dynamics and generation of turbulence, namely, the formation of a quasi-1D dispersive shock consisting of a train of grey solitons that eventually breakup into chains of distinct quantised vortices of alternating vorticity followed by random turbulent flow. The Josephson junction barrier allows us to create t…
A space-time crystal has recently been observed in a superfluid Bose gas. Here we construct a variational model that allows us to describe from first principles the coupling between the radial breathing mode and the higher-order axial modes that underlies the observation of the space-time crystal. By comparing with numerical simulations we verify the validity of our variational Ansatz. From the model we determine the requirements for the observation of the space-time crystal and the Ising-like nature of the symmetry breaking involved. Also, we find the onset and growth rate of the space-time c…
We present an action that can be used to study variationally the collapse of Bose Einstein condensates. This action is real, even though it includes dissipative terms. It adopts long range interactions between the atoms, so that there is always a stable minimum of the energy, even if the remaining number of atoms is above the number that in the case of local interactions is the critical one. The proposed action incorporates the time needed for the abrupt and delayed onset of collapse, yielding in fact its dependence on the scattering length. We show that the evolution of the condensate is equi…
We address the impact of intra-site spin-orbit (SO) coupling and associated inter-component Rabi coupling on the modulational instability (MI) of plane-wave states in two-component discrete Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Conditions for the onset of the MI and the respective instability are found analytically. SO coupling allows us to produce the MI even for a small initial wavenumber (q < π/2) for miscible states. In particular, SO coupling introduces MI even in the absence of hopping coefficient, a concept which may have wider ramifications in heavy atomic BECs. Our investigations predict …
Atoms can be extracted from a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by driving spin-flips to untrapped states. The coherence properties of the BEC are transfered to the released atoms, creating a coherent beam of matter refered to as an atom laser. In this work, the extraction of atoms from a BEC is investigated numerically by solving a coupled set of Gross-Pitaevskii equations in up to three dimensions. The result is compared to experimental data and a semiclassical rate model. In the weak-coupling regime, quantitative agreement is reached between theory and experiment and a semiclassical ra…
