We introduce a measurement scheme that utilizes a single ion as a local field probe. The ion is confined in a segmented Paul trap and shuttled around to reach different probing sites. By the use of a single atom probe, it becomes possible characterizing fields with spatial resolution of a few nm within an extensive region of millimeters. We demonstrate the scheme by accurately investigating the electric fields providing the confinement for the ion. For this we present all theoretical and practical methods necessary to generate these potentials. We find sub-percent agreement between measured and calculated electric field values.
Trapped ions are among the most promising systems for practical quantum computing (QC). The basic requirements for universal QC have all been demonstrated with ions and quantum algorithms using few-ion-qubit systems have been implemented. We review the state of the field, covering the basics of how trapped ions are used for QC and their strengths and limitations as qubits. In addition, we discuss what is being done, and what may be required, to increase the scale of trapped ion quantum computers while mitigating decoherence and control errors. Finally, we explore the outlook for trapped-ion QC…
Trapped Rydberg ions are a promising novel approach to quantum computing and simulations. They are envisaged to combine the exquisite control of trapped ion qubits with the fast two-qubit Rydberg gates already demonstrated in neutral atom experiments. Coherent Rydberg excitation is a key requirement for these gates. Here, we carry out the first coherent Rydberg excitation of an ion and perform a single-qubit Rydberg gate, thus demonstrating basic elements of a trapped Rydberg ion quantum computer.
We report on a demonstration of Ramsey interferometry by three-dimensional motion with a trapped $^{171}Yb^+$ ion. We applied a momentum kick to the ion in a direction diagonal to the trap axes to initiate three-dimensional motion using a mode-locked pulse laser. The interference signal was analyzed theoretically to demonstrate three-dimensional matter-wave interference. This work paves the way to realizing matter-wave interferometry using trapped ions.
We experimentally study the real-time susceptibility of trapped-ion quantum systems to small doses of ionizing radiation. We expose an ion-trap apparatus to a variety of $α$, $β$, and $γ$ sources and measure the resulting changes in trapped-ion qubit lifetimes, coherence times, gate fidelities, and motional heating rates. We found no quantifiable degradation of ion trap performance in the presence of low-dose radiation sources for any of the measurements performed. This finding is encouraging for the long-term prospects of using ion-based quantum information systems in extreme environments, in…
We theoretically study trapped ions that are immersed in an ultracold gas of Rydberg-dressed atoms. By off-resonant coupling on a dipole-forbidden transition, the adiabatic atom-ion potential can be made repulsive. We study the energy exchange between the atoms and a single trapped ion and find that Langevin collisions are inhibited in the ultracold regime for these repulsive interactions. Therefore, the proposed system avoids recently observed ion heating in hybrid atom-ion systems caused by coupling to the ion's radio frequency trapping field and retains ultracold temperatures even in the pr…
We demonstrate a spatial-imaging thermometry technique for ions in a one-dimensional Coulomb crystal by relating their imaged spatial extent along the linear radiofrequency ion trap axis to normal modes of vibration of coupled oscillators in a harmonic potential. We also use the thermal spatial spread of bright ions in the case of a two-species mixed chain to measure the center-of-mass (COM) resonance frequency of the entire chain and infer the molecular composition of the co-trapped dark ions. These non-destructive techniques create new possibilities for better understanding of sympathetic co…
The interaction between the electric dipole moment of a trapped molecular ion and the configuration of the confined Coulomb crystal couples the orientation of the molecule to its motion. We consider the practical feasibility of harnessing this interaction to initialize, process, and read out quantum information encoded in molecular ion qubits without optically illuminating the molecules. We present two schemes wherein a molecular ion can be entangled with a co-trapped atomic ion qubit, providing, among other things, a means for molecular state preparation and measurement. We also show that vir…
Trapped ions are a promising candidate for large scale quantum computation. Several systems have been built in both academic and industrial settings to implement modestly-sized quantum algorithms. Efficient cooling of the motional degrees of freedom is a key requirement for high-fidelity quantum operations using trapped ions. Here, we present a technique whereby individual ions are used to cool individual motional modes in parallel, reducing the time required to bring an ion chain to its motional ground state. We demonstrate this technique experimentally and develop a model to understand the e…
Using discrete and continuous variable subsystems, hybrid approaches to quantum information could enable more quantum computational power for the same physical resources. Here, we propose a hybrid scheme that can be used to generate the necessary Gaussian and non-Gaussian operations for universal continuous variable quantum computing in trapped ions. This scheme utilizes two linear spin-motion interactions to generate a broad set of non-linear effective spin-motion interactions including one and two mode squeezing, beam splitter, and trisqueezing operations in trapped ion systems. We discuss p…
Resolved sideband cooling is a standard technique for cooling trapped ions below the Doppler limit to near their motional ground state. Yet, the most common methods for sideband cooling implicitly rely on low Doppler-cooled temperatures and tightly confined ions, and they cannot be optimized for different experimental conditions. Here we introduce a framework which calculates the fastest possible pulsed sideband cooling sequence for a given number of pulses and set of experimental parameters, and we verify its improvement compared to traditional methods using a trapped $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ion. Afte…
A complete set of spectroscopic data is indispensable when using Rydberg states of trapped ions for quantum information processing. We carried out Rydberg series spectroscopy for $nS_{1/2}$ states with $38 \leq n \leq 65$ and for $nD_{5/2}$ states with $37\leq n \leq 50$ on a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion. From a nonlinear regression to resonance frequencies, we determined the ionization energy of 2 870 575.582(15) GHz, measured 60 times more accurately as compared to the accepted value and contradicting it by 7.5 standard deviations. We confirm quantum defect values of $δ_{S_{1/2}}=1.80299…
We present protocols for dissipative entanglement of three trapped-ion qubits and discuss a scheme that uses sympathetic cooling as the dissipation mechanism. This scheme relies on tailored destructive interference to generate any one of six entangled W states in a three-ion qubit space. Using a beryllium-magnesium ion crystal as an example system, we theoretically investigate the protocol's performance and the effects of likely error sources, including thermal secular motion of the ion crystal, calibration imperfections, and spontaneous photon scattering. We estimate that a fidelity of $\sim$…
Great advances in precision quantum measurement have been achieved with trapped ions and atomic gases at the lowest possible temperatures. These successes have inspired ideas to merge the two systems. In this way one can study the unique properties of ionic impurities inside a quantum fluid or explore buffer gas cooling of the trapped ion quantum computer. Remarkably, in spite of its importance, experiments with atom-ion mixtures remained firmly confined to the classical collision regime. We report a collision energy of 1.15(0.23) times the $s$-wave energy (or 9.9(2.0)~$μ$K) for a trapped ytte…
We discuss a protocol for the analogue quantum simulation of superradiance and subradiance using a linear chain of N trapped qubit ions with a single sympathetic cooling ion. We develop a simple analytic model that shows the dynamics of the qubit subspace converge to those of a cloud undergoing Dicke superradiance and subradiance. We provide numerical simulations of the full ion chain and show that they converge to the dynamics predicted by our analytic model with no fitting parameters. We also map out the parameter regime needed to reach this convergence.

Fiber-based quantum networks require photons at telecommunications wavelengths to interconnect qubits separated by long distances. Trapped ions are leading candidates for quantum networking with high-fidelity two-qubit gates, long coherence times, and the ability to readily emit photons entangled with the ion's internal qubit states. However, trapped ions typically emit photons at wavelengths incompatible with telecommunications fiber. Here, we demonstrate frequency conversion of visible photons, emitted from the S-P dipole transition of a trapped Ba+ ion, into the telecommunications C-band. T…
In this paper we consider two problems in diagnostics of trapped ion crystals in which an analysis of the ions' collective oscillatory motion yield potentially useful results. When one of the ions in a linear crystal undergoes a collision, observation of the subsequent motion allows one to deduce the identity of which ion sustained the collision. When a linear ion crystal is formed with a dark impurity ion, analysis of the ions' motion can identify the mass (and thus give an important clue to the species) of the impurity.
In this chapter, we illustrate how a trapped ion system can be used for the experimental study of quantum thermodynamics, in particular, quantum fluctuation of work. As technology of nano/micro scale develops, it becomes critical to understand thermodynamics at the quantum mechanical level. The trapped ion system is a representative physical platform to experimentally demonstrate quantum phenomena with excellent control and precision. We provide a basic introduction of the trapped ion system and present the theoretical framework for the experimental study of quantum thermodynamics. Then we bri…
Trapped ion hardware has made significant progress recently and is now one of the leading platforms for quantum computing. To construct two-qubit gates in trapped ions, experimental manipulation approaches for ion chains are becoming increasingly prevalent. Given the restricted control technology, how implementing high-fidelity quantum gate operations is crucial. Many works in current pulse design optimization focus on ion-phonon and effective ion-ion coupling while ignoring the higher-order expansion impacts of these two terms brought on by experiment defects. This paper proposed a novel robu…
We have experimentally observed the dynamics of a single polariton and two polaritons in a two-ion chain. By driving two trapped ions at a motional blue-sideband transition, we realize the anti-Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model. When a single polariton exists in a trapped-ion chain, the polariton hops between the ion sites. On the other hand, when there are single polaritons at each ion site, the hopping of the polaritons is suppressed because of the polariton-polariton interaction induced by the nonlinearity of the anti-Jaynes-Cummings interaction, thereby realizing the blockade of polariton hopp…
We propose a new method for generating programmable interactions in one- and two-dimensional trapped-ion quantum simulators. Here we consider the use of optical tweezers to engineer the sound-wave spectrum of trapped ion crystals. We show that this approach allows us to tune the interactions and connectivity of the ion qubits beyond the power-law interactions accessible in current setups. We demonstrate the experimental feasibility of our proposal using realistic tweezer settings and experimentally relevant trap parameters to generate the optimal tweezer patterns to create target spin-spin int…

We propose and demonstrate a scalable scheme for the simultaneous determination of internal and motional states in trapped ions with single-site resolution. The scheme is applied to the study of polaritonic excitations in the Jaynes- Cummings Hubbard model with trapped ions, in which the internal and motional states of the ions are strongly correlated. We observe quantum phase transitions of polaritonic excitations in two ions by directly evaluating their variances per ion site. Our work establishes an essential technological method for large-scale quantum simulations of polaritonic systems.
Trapped-ion quantum information processors store information in atomic ions maintained in position in free space via electric fields. Quantum logic is enacted via manipulation of the ions' internal and shared motional quantum states using optical and microwave signals. While trapped ions show great promise for quantum-enhanced computation, sensing, and communication, materials research is needed to design traps that allow for improved performance by means of integration of system components, including optics and electronics for ion-qubit control, while minimizing the near-ubiquitous electric-f…
The two most widely used ion cooling methods are laser cooling and sympathetic cooling by elastic collisions (ECs). Here we demonstrate another method of cooling ions that is based on resonant charge exchange (RCE) between the trapped ion and the ultracold parent atom. Specifically, trapped Cs$^{+}$ ions are cooled by collisions with co-trapped, ultracold Cs atoms and, separately, by collisions with co-trapped, ultracold Rb atoms. We observe that the cooling of Cs$^{+}$ ions by Cs atoms is more efficient than cooling of Cs$^{+}$ ions by Rb atoms. This signals the presence of a cooling mechanis…
Squeezed and rotated quadrature of an ion in a Paul trap is discussed in connection with reconstructing its quantum state using symplectic-tomography method. Marginal distributions of the quadrature for squeezed and correlated states and for nonlinear coherent states of a trapped ion are obtained and the density matrices in the Fock basis are expressed explicitly in terms of these marginal distributions.
We show how to produce a fast quantum Rabi model with trapped ions. Its importance resides not only in the acceleration of the phenomena that may be achieved with these systems, from quantum gates to the generation of nonclassical states of the vibrational motion of the ion, but also in reducing unwanted effects such as the decay of coherences that may appear in such systems.
