Experiments have revealed multiple quantum oscillation frequencies in underdoped high temperature superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+δ}}$, corresponding to approximately 10% doping, which contain $\mathrm{CuO}$ bilayers in the unit cell. These unit cells are further coupled along the c-axis by a tunneling matrix element. A model of the energy dispersion that has its roots in the previously determined electronic structure, combined with two-fold commensurate density waves, reveals multiple electron and hole pockets. To the extent that quasiparticles of the reconstructed Fermi surface have finite residues, however small, the formation of Landau levels are the cause of these oscillations and the bilayer splitting and warping of the electronic dispersion along the direction perpendicular to the CuO-planes are firm consequences. We explore this possibility in detail and find overall consistency with experiments. An important conclusion is that bilayer splitting is severely renormalized from the value obtained from band structure calculations. It would be extremely interesting to perform these experiments for higher values of doping. We roughly expect the splitting of the frequencies to increase with doping, but the full picture may be more complex because the density wave order parameter is also expected to decrease with doping, vanishing around the middle of the superconducting dome.
We show that the distribution of quantum oscillation frequencies observed over a broad range of magnetic field can be reconciled with the wavevectors of charge modulations found in nuclear magnetic resonance and resonant x-ray spectroscopy experiments in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x within a model of biaxial charge ordering occurring in a bilayer CuO2 planar system. Bilayer coupling introduces the possibility of different period modulations and quantum oscillation frequencies corresponding to each of the bonding and antibonding bands, which can be reconciled with recent experimental observations
A study of the ferromagnetic transition of $SrRuO_3$ in nanometer thick bilayers with $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$, $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4-y}$, Au and Cr: Signature of injected carriers in the pseudogap regime
We report quantum oscillations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.56 over a significantly large range in magnetic field extending from 24 to 101 T, enabling three well-spaced low frequencies at 440 T, 532 T, and 620 T to be clearly resolved. We show that a small nodal bilayer coupling that splits a nodal pocket into bonding and antibonding orbits yields a sequence of frequencies, F0 - ΔF, F0, and F0 + ΔF and accompanying beat pattern similar to that observed experimentally, on invoking magnetic breakdown tunneling at the nodes. The relative amplitudes of the multiple frequencies observed experimentally i…
The temperature dependence of the relaxation dynamics in the bilayer thin film heterostructure composed of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$ (BFO) and superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ (YBCO) grown on a (001) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate is studied by a time-resolved pump-probe technique, and compared with that of pure YBCO thin film grown under the same growth conditions. The superconductivity of YBCO is found to be retained in the heterostructure. We observe a speeding up of the YBCO recombination dynamics in the superconducting state of the heterostructure, and attribute it to the presence of weak f…

Hole-doped high-temperature cuprate superconductors below optimum doping have small electron-like Fermi surfaces occupying a small fraction of the Brillouin zone. There is strong evidence that this is linked to charge density wave (CDW) order, which reconstructs the large hole-like Fermi surfaces predicted by band structure calculations . Recent experiments have revealed the structure of the two CDW components in the benchmark bilayer material YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ in high field where quantum oscillation (QO) measurements are performed. We have combined these results with a tight-binding desc…
Electronic transport and magnetization measurements were performed on La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (LCMO/YBCO) bilayers below the superconducting transition temperature in order to study the interaction between magnetism and superconductivity. This study shows that a substantial number of weakly pinned vortices are induced in the YBCO layer by the large out-of-plane stray field in the domain walls. Their motion gives rise to large dissipation peaks at the coercive field. The angular dependent magnetoresistance (MR) data reveal the interaction between the stripe domain str…
Heteroepitaxially grown bilayers of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) on top of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) thin films were investigated by focusing on electric transport properties as well as on magnetism and orbital occupation at the interface. Transport measurements on YBCO single layers and on YBCO/LCMO bilayers, with different YBCO thickness $d_Y$ and constant LCMO thickness $d_L=50$\,nm, show a significant reduction of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ only for $d_Y<10$\,nm,with only a slightly stronger $T_c$ suppression in the bilayers, as com…
Within the complex phase diagram of the hole-doped cuprates, seizing the nature of the mysterious pseudo-gap phase is essential to unravel the microscopic origin of high-temperature superconductivity. Below the pseudo-gap temperature $\rm T^{\star}$, evidences for intra-unit-cell orders breaking the 4-fold rotation symmetry have been provided by neutron diffraction and scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Using polarized neutron diffraction on a detwinned $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}$ sample, we here report a distinct a-b anisotropy of the intra-unit-cell magnetic structure factor below $\rm T^{\star}$, …

By improving the experimental conditions and extensive data accumulation, we have achieved very high-precision in the measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$. We find that the main oscillation, so far believed to be single-frequency, is composed of three closely spaced frequencies. We attribute this to bilayer splitting and warping of a single quasi-2D Fermi surface, indicating that \emph{c}-axis coherence is restored at low temperature in underdoped cuprates. Our results do not support the existence of a larger…
Circular dichroism and bilayer splitting in the normal state of underdoped (Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$(Ca$_x$Y$_{1-x}$)Cu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ and overdoped (Pb,Bi)$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$
Heteroepitaxial superlattices of [YBa2Cu3O7(n)/ La0.67Ca0.33MnO3(m)]x, where n and m are the number of YBCO and LCMO monolayers and x the number of bilayer repetitions, have been grown with pulsed laser deposition on NdGaO3 (110) and Sr0.7La0.3Al0.65Ta0.35O3 (LSAT) (001). These substrates are well lattice matched with YBCO and LCMO and, unlike the commonly used SrTiO3, they do not give rise to complex and uncontrolled strain effects due to structural transitions at low temperature. The growth dynamics and the structure have been studied in-situ with reflection high energy electron diffraction …
The mystery of the normal state in the underdoped cuprates has deepened with the use of newer and complementary experimental probes. While photoemission studies have revealed solely `Fermi arcs' centered on nodal points in the Brillouin zone at which holes aggregate upon doping, more recent quantum oscillation experiments have been interpreted in terms of an ambipolar Fermi surface, that includes sections containing electron carriers located at the antinodal region. To address the question of whether an ambipolar Fermi surface truly exists, here we utilize measurements of the second harmonic q…

The charge density wave in the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) is now known to have two different ordering tendencies differentiated by their $c$-axis correlations. These correspond to ferro- (F-CDW) and antiferro- (AF-CDW) couplings between CDW in neighbouring CuO$_2$ bilayers. This discovery has prompted a number of fundamental questions. For example, how does superconductivity adjust to two competing orders and are either of these orders responsible for the electronic reconstruction? Here we use high-energy x-ray diffraction to study YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.67}$ as …
In high temperature cuprate superconductors, the interlayer coupling between the CuO$_2$ planes plays an important role in dictating superconductivity, as indicated by the sensitive dependence of the critical temperature (T$_C$) on the number of CuO$_2$ planes in one structural unit. In Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ superconductor with two CuO$_2$ planes in one structural unit, the interaction between the two CuO$_2$ planes gives rise to band splitting into two Fermi surface sheets (bilayer splitting) that have distinct superconducting gap. The iron based superconductors are composed of stacki…
Measurements of quantum oscillations in the cuprate superconductors afford a new opportunity to assess the extent to which the electronic properties of these materials yield to a description rooted in Fermi liquid theory. However, such an analysis is hampered by the small number of oscillatory periods observed. Here we employ a genetic algorithm to globally model the field, angular, and temperature dependence of the quantum oscillations observed in the resistivity of YBa2Cu3O6.59. This approach successfully fits an entire data set to a Fermi surface comprised of two small, quasi-2-dimensional …
Bilayer graphene hosts valley-chiral one dimensional modes at domain walls between regions of different interlayer potential or stacking order. When such a channel is brought into proximity to a superconductor, the two electrons of a Cooper pair which tunnel into it move in opposite directions because they belong to different valleys related by the time-reversal symmetry. This is a kinetic variant of Cooper pair splitting, which requires neither Coulomb repulsion nor energy filtering but is enforced by the robustness of the valley isospin in the absence of atomic-scale defects. We derive an ef…
Ferromagnetic insulators can induce a strong exchange field in an adjacent superconductor via the magnetic proximity effect. This manifests as spin-splitting of the BCS density of states of the superconductor, an important ingredient for numerous superconducting spintronics applications and the realization of Majorana fermions. A crucial parameter that determines the magnitude of the induced spin-splitting in FI/S bilayers is the thickness of the S layer $d$: In very thin samples, the superconductivity is suppressed by the strong magnetism. By contrast, in very thick samples, the spin splittin…
We perform first-principles band structure calculations for the tetragonal and monoclinic structures of LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$. We find that the Bi $6p_{x,y}$ bands on two BiS$_2$ layers exhibit a sizable splitting at the X = ($π$, 0, 0) and several other \textbf{k}-points for the monoclinic structure. We show that this feature originates from the inter-BiS$_2$ layer coupling strongly enhanced by the symmetry breaking of the crystal structure. The Fermi surface also shows a large splitting and becomes anisotropic with respect to the $k_x$ and $k_y$ directions in the monoclinic structure, …
The Fourier transform of the observed magnetic quantum oscillations (MQO) in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$ high-temperature superconductors has a prominent low-frequency peak with two smaller neighbouring peaks. The separation and positions of these three peaks are almost independent of doping. This pattern has been explained previously by rather special, exquisitely detailed, Fermi-surface reconstruction. We propose that these MQO have a different origin, and their frequencies are related to the bilayer and inter-bilayer electron hopping rather than directly to the areas of tiny Fermi-surface po…
A ferromagnetic insulator attached to a superconductor is known to induce an exchange splitting of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) singularity by a magnitude proportional to the magnetization, and penetrating into the superconductor to a depth comparable with the superconducting coherence length. We study this long-range magnetic proximity effect in EuS/Al bilayers and find that the exchange splitting of the BCS peaks is present already in the unpolarized state of the ferromagnetic insulator (EuS), and is being further enhanced when magnetizing the sample by a magnetic field. The measureme…
We study the effects of spin-splitting and spin-flip scattering in a superconductor (S) on the thermoelectric properties of a tunneling contact to a metallic ferromagnet (F) using the Green's function method. A giant thermopower has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in such structures. This is attributed to the spin-dependent particle-hole asymmetry in the tunneling density of states in the S/F heterostructure. Here, we evaluate the S density of states and thermopower for a range of temperatures, Zeeman-splitting, and spin-flip scattering. In contrast to the naive expect…
We investigate the behavior of a Josephson junction consisting of a ferromagnetic insulator-superconductor (FI-S) bilayer tunnel-coupled to a superconducting electrode. We show that the Josephson coupling in the structure is strenghtened by the presence of the spin-splitting field induced in the FI-S bilayer. Such strenghtening manifests itself as an increase of the critical current $I_c$ with the amplitude of the exchange field. Furthermore, the effect can be strongly enhanced if the junction is taken out of equilibrium by a temperature bias. We propose a realistic setup to assess experimenta…
