We study deformations of Riemannian metrics on a given manifold equipped with a codimension-one foliation subject to quantities expressed in terms of its second fundamental form. We prove the local existence and uniqueness theorem and estimate the existence time of solutions for some particular cases. The key step of the solution procedure is to find (from a system of quasilinear PDE's) the principal curvatures of the foliation. Examples for extrinsic Newton transformation flow, extrinsic Ricci flow, and applications to foliations on surfaces are given.
Extrinsic Geometric Flow (EGF) for a codimension-one foliation has been recently introduced by authors as deformations of Riemannian metrics subject to quantities expressed in terms of its second fundamental form. In the paper we introduce soliton solutions to EGF and study their geometry for totally umbilical foliations, foliations on surfaces, and when the EGF is produced by the extrinsic Ricci tensor.
We study the geometry of a codimension-one foliation with a time-dependent Riemannian metric. The work begins with formulae concerning deformations of geometric quantities as the Riemannian metric varies along the leaves of the foliation. Then the Extrinsic Geometric Flow depending on the second fundamental form of the foliation is introduced. Under suitable assumptions, this evolution yields the second order parabolic PDEs, for which the existence/uniquenes and in some cases convergence of a solution are shown. Applications to the problem of prescribing mean curvature function of a codimensio…
We develop variation formulas for the quantities of extrinsic geometry for adapted variations of metrics on almost-product (e.g. foliated) Riemannian manifolds, and apply them to study the total mixed scalar curvature of a distribution -- analogue of the classical Einstein-Hilbert action. The mixed scalar curvature ${\rm S}_{\,\rm mix}$ is the averaged sectional curvature over all planes that contain vectors from both distributions of an almost-product structure and the variations we consider preserve orthogonality of the distributions. We derive the directional derivative $D J_{\,\rm mix}$ (o…
We develop variation formulas on almost-product (e.g. foliated) pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, and we consider variations of metric preserving orthogonality of the distributions. These formulae are applied to Einstein-Hilbert type actions: the total mixed scalar curvature and the total extrinsic scalar curvature of a distribution. The obtained Euler-Lagrange equations admit a number of solutions, e.g., twisted products, conformal submersions and isoparametric foliations. The paper generalizes recent results about the actions on codimension-one foliations for the case of arbitrary (co)dimension.
In this article, we deduce a series of integral formulas for a foliated sub-Riemannian manifold, which is a new geometric concept denoting a Riemannian manifold equipped with a distribution ${\mathcal D}$ and a foliation ${\mathcal F}$, whose tangent bundle is a subbundle of ${\mathcal D}$. Our integral formulas generalize some results for foliated Riemannian manifolds and involve the shape operators of ${\mathcal F}$ with respect to normals in ${\mathcal D}$ and the curvature tensor of induced connection on ${\mathcal D}$. The formulas also include arbitrary functions $f_j\ (0\le j<\dim{\math…
In this article, we prove a series of integral formulae for a codimension-one foliated sub-Riemannian manifold, i.e., a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ equipped with a distribution ${\mathcal D}=T{\mathcal F}\oplus\,{\rm span}(N)$, where ${\mathcal F}$ is a foliation of $M$ and $N$ a unit vector field $g$-orthogonal to ${\mathcal F}$. Our integral formulas involve $r$th mean curvatures of ${\mathcal F}$, Newton transformations of the shape operator of ${\mathcal F}$ with respect to $N$ and the curvature tensor of induced connection on ${\mathcal D}$ and generalize some known integral formulas (due…
Integral formulae for foliated Riemannian manifolds provide obstructions for existence of foliations or compact leaves of them with given geometric properties. This paper continues our recent study and presents new integral formulae and their applications for codimension-one foliated Randers spaces. The goal is a generalization of Reeb's formula (that the total mean curvature of the leaves is zero) and its companion (that twice total second mean curvature of the leaves equals to the total Ricci curvature in the normal direction). We also extend results by Brito, Langevin and Rosenberg (that to…
A pre-Lie algebroid is an anchored bundle provided with an almost Lie bracket such that the anchor is compatible with the Lie bracket of vector fields. We firstly show how most geometrical structures intensively studied in the framework of Lie algebroid can easily be extended in the pre-Lie algebroid context. The principal purpose of this paper is to show that how all these results only depend of the foliated structure and do not depend of the pre-Lie algebroid structure that we can put on a foliated anchored bundle. As application, we obtain a Finsler connection on a foliated anchored bundle …
We prove a general result about the short time existence and uniqueness of second order geometric flows transverse to a Riemannian foliation on a compact manifold. Our result includes some flows already existing in literature, as the transverse Ricci flow, the Sasaki-Ricci flow and the Sasaki J-flow and motivates the study of other evolution equations. We also introduce a transverse version of the Kaehler-Ricci flow adapting some classical results to the foliated case.
In this article we give a geometric interpretation of the Hitchin component for PSL(4,R) in the representation variety of a closed oriented surface of higher genus. We show that representations in the Hitchin component are precisely the holonomy representations of properly convex foliated projective structures on the unit tangent bundle of the surface. From this we also deduce a geometric description of the Hitchin component the symplectic group PSp(4,R).
We prove a Hitchin-Thorpe inequality for noncompact 4-manifolds with foliated geometry at infinity by extending on previous work by Dai and Wei. After introducing the objects at hand, we recall some preliminary results regarding the $G$-signature formula and the rho invariant, which are used to obtain expressions for the signature and Euler characteristic in our geometric context. We then derive our main result, and present examples.
The mixed scalar curvature is one of the simplest curvature invariants of a foliated Riemannian manifold. We explore the problem of prescribing the mixed scalar curvature of a foliated Riemann-Cartan manifold by conformal change of the structure in tangent and normal to the leaves directions. Under certain geometrical assumptions and in two special cases: along a compact leaf and for a closed fibred manifold, we reduce the problem to solution of a leafwise elliptic equation, which has three stable solutions -- only one of them corresponds to the case of a foliated Riemannian manifold.
Integral formulae for foliated Riemannian manifolds provide obstructions for existence of foliations or compact leaves of them with given geometric properties. Recently, we associated a new Riemannian metric to a codimension-one foliated Finsler space and proved integral formulae for general and for Randers spaces. In the paper, we study this metric for a wider class of codimension-one foliated $(α,β)$-spaces and embody it in a set of metrics that can be viewed as a perturbed metric associated with $α$. For such metrics we calculate the Weingarten operator of the leaves and deduce the Reeb typ…
We study extrinsic geometry of a codimension-one foliation ${\cal F}$ of a closed Finsler space $(M,F)$, in particular, of a Randers space $(M,α+β)$. Using a unit vector field $ν$ orthogonal (in the Finsler sense) to the leaves of ${\cal F}$ we define a new Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$, which for Randers case depends nicely on $(α,β)$. For that $g$ we derive several geometric invariants of ${\cal F}$ (e.g. the Riemann curvature and the shape operator) in terms of $F$, then under natural assumptions on $β$ which simplify derivations, we express them in terms of corresponding invariants arising …
We investigate ruled surfaces in 3d Riemannian manifolds, i.e., surfaces foliated by geodesics. In 3d space forms, we find the striction curve, distribution parameter, and the first and second fundamental forms, from which we obtain the Gaussian and mean curvatures. We also provide model-independent proof for the known fact that extrinsically flat surfaces in space forms are ruled. This proof allows us to identify the necessary and sufficient condition the curvature tensor must satisfy for an extrinsically flat surface in a generic 3d manifold to be ruled. Further, we show that if a 3d manifol…
Analogous to the bowl soliton of mean curvature flow, we construct rotationally symmetric translating solutions to a very large class of extrinsic curvature flows, namely those whose speeds are $α$-homogeneous ($α>0$), elliptic and symmetric with respect to the principal curvatures. We show that these solutions are necessarily convex, and give precise criteria for the speed functions which determine whether these translators are defined on all of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ or contained in a cylinder. For speeds that are nonzero when at least one of the principal curvatures is nonzero, we are also able t…
We study harmonic and totally invariant measures in a foliated compact Riemannian manifold isometrically embedded in an Euclidean space. We introduce geometrical techniques for stochastic calculus in this space. In particular, using these techniques we can construct explicitely an Stratonovich equation for the foliated Brownian motion (cf. L. Garnett \cite{LG} and others). We present a characterization of totally invariant measures in terms of the flow of diffeomorphisms of associated to this equation. We prove an ergodic formula for the sum of the Lyapunov exponents in terms of the geometry o…
In recent years a lot of attention has been paid to topological spaces which are a bit more general than smooth manifolds - orbifolds. Orbifolds are intuitively speaking manifolds with some singularities. The formal definition is also modelled on that of manifolds, an orbifold is a topological space which locally is homeomorphic to the orbit space of a finite group acting on $R^n$. Orbifolds were defined by Satake, as V-manifolds, then studied by W. Thurston, who introduced the term "orbifold". Due to their importance in physics, and in particular in the string theory, orbifolds have been draw…
A Riemannian manifold endowed with $k\ge2$ complementary pairwise orthogonal distributions is called a Riemannian almost $k$-product manifold. In the article, for the first time, we study the following problem: find a relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic invariants of a Riemannian almost $k$-product manifold isometrically immersed in another Riemannian manifold. For such immersions, we establish an optimal inequality that includes the mixed scalar curvature and the square of the mean curvature. Although Riemannian curvature tensor belongs to intrinsic geometry, a special part called th…
We use adiabatic limits to study foliated manifolds. The Bott connection naturally shows up as the adiabatic limit of Levi-Civita connections. As an application, we then construct certain natural elliptic operators associated to the foliation and present a direct geometric proof of a vanshing theorem of Connes[Co], which extends the Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem [L] to foliated manifolds with spin leaves, for what we call almost Riemannian foliations. Several new vanishing theorems are also proved by using our method.
In this paper, geometric characterizations of conformally flat and radially flat hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{S}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ are given by means of their extrinsic geometry. Under suitable conditions on the shape operator, we classify conformally flat hypersurfaces in terms of rotation hypersurfaces. In addition, a close relation between radially flat hypersurfaces and semi-parallel hypersurfaces is established. These results lead to geometric descriptions of hypersurfaces with special intrinsic structures, such as Einstein metrics, Ricci solitons and …
In this paper we study the foliated structure of a contact metric $(κ,μ)$-space. In particular, using the theory of Legendre foliations, we give a geometric interpretation to the Boeckx's classification of contact metric $(κ,μ)$-spaces and we find necessary conditions for a contact manifold to admit a compatible contact metric $(κ,μ)$-structure. Finally we prove that any contact metric $(κ,μ)$-space $M$ whose Boeckx invariant $I_M$ is different from $\pm 1$ admits a compatible Sasakian or Tanaka-Webster parallel structure according to the circumstance that $|I_M|>1$ or $|I_M|<1$, respectively.
We extend the notion of the geometric entropy of foliation to foliated manifolds equipped with leafwise Finsler structure. We study the relation between the geometric entropy and the topological entropy of the holonomy pseudogroup. The case of foliated manifold with leafwise Randers structure. In this case the estimates for one dimensional foliation defined by a vector field in term of topological entropy of a flow are presented.
Given a Riemannian spin^c manifold whose boundary is endowed with a Riemannian flow, we show that any solution of the basic Dirac equation satisfies an integral inequality depending on geometric quantities, such as the mean curvature and the O'Neill tensor. We then characterize the equality case of the inequality when the ambient manifold is a domain of a Kähler-Einstein manifold or a Riemannian product of a Kähler-Einstein manifold with R (or with the circle S^1).
The main result of this paper is a convexity estimate for translating solitons of extrinsic geometric flows which evolve under a $1$-homogeneous concave function in the principal curvatures. In addition, we show examples of these hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for particular functions.
Geometric quantization of a Poisson manifold need not imply quantization of its symplectic leaves. We provide the leafwise geometric quantization of a Poisson manifold, seen as a foliated one, whose quantum algebra restricted to each leaf is quantized.
We prove a priori estimates for a class of transverse fully nonlinear equations on Sasakian manifolds and give some geometric applications such as the transversion Calabi-Yau theorem for transverse balanced and (strongly) Gauduchon metrics. We also explain that similar results hold on compact oriented, taut, transverse Hermitian foliated manifold of complex co-dimension $n$, and give some geometric applications such as the transverse Calabi-Yau theorems for transverse Hermitian and (strongly) Gauduchon metrics.
Recent renewed interest in Sasakian manifolds is due mainly to the fact that they can provide examples of generalized Einstein manifolds, manifolds which are of great interest in mathematical models of various aspects of physical phenomena. Sasakian manifolds are odd dimensional counterparts of Kählerian manifolds to which they are closely related. The book of Ch. Boyer and K. Galicki, Sasakian Geometry is both the best introduction to the subject and at the same time it gathers state of the art information and results on these manifolds. However, although the authors are well aware that a Sas…
We describe a procedure, called regularisation, that allows us to study geometric structures on Lie algebroids via foliated geometric structures on a manifold of higher dimension. This procedure applies to various classes of Lie algebroids; namely, those whose singularities are of b^k, complex-log, or elliptic type, possibly with self-crossings. One of our main applications is a proof of the Weinstein conjecture for overtwisted b^k-contact structures. This was proven by Miranda-Oms using a certain technical hypothesis. Our approach avoids this assumption by reducing the proof to the foliated s…
These notes arose from a mini lecture series the author gave at the Early Career Researchers Workshop on Geometric Analysis and PDEs, held in January 2020 at the Matrix institute of the University of Melbourne. We discussed some classical aspects of expanding curvature flows and obtained first applications. In these notes we will give a detailed account on what was covered during the lectures.

In 1996, Huisken-Yau proved that every three-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be uniquely foliated near infinity by stable closed surfaces of constant mean curvature (CMC) if it is asymptotically equal to the (spatial) Schwarzschild solution. Later, their decay assumptions were weakened by Metzger, Huang, Eichmair-Metzger, and the author. In this work, we prove the reverse implication, i.e. any three-dimensional Riemannian manifold is asymptotically flat if it possesses a CMC-cover satisfying certain geometric curvature estimates, a uniqueness property, a weak foliation property, and each s…
In 1996, Huisken-Yau proved that every three-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be uniquely foliated near infinity by stable closed surfaces of constant mean curvature (CMC) if it is asymptotically equal to the (spatial) Schwarzschild solution. Using their method, Rigger proved the same theorem for Riemannian manifolds being asymptotically equal to the (spatial) (Schwarzschild-)Anti-de Sitter solution. This was generalized to asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds by Neves-Tian, Chodosh, and the author at a later stage. In this work, we prove the reverse implication as the author already did in …
