We introduce a new notion of twisted actions of inverse semigroups and show that they correspond bijectively to certain regular Fell bundles over inverse semigroups, yielding in this way a structure classification of such bundles. These include as special cases all the stable Fell bundles.
Our definition of twisted actions properly generalizes a previous one introduced by Sieben and corresponds to Busby-Smith twisted actions in the group case. As an application we describe twisted etale groupoid C*-algebras in terms of crossed products by twisted actions of inverse semigroups and show that Sieben's twisted actions essentially correspond to twisted etale groupoids with topologically trivial twists.
We prove a version of Wordingham's theorem for left regular representations in the setting of Fell bundles of inverse semigroups and use this result to discuss the various associated cross sectional C*-algebras.
We construct a weak conditional expectation from the section C*-algebra of a Fell bundle over a unital inverse semigroup to its unit fibre. We use this to define the reduced C*-algebra of the Fell bundle. We study when the reduced C*-algebra for an inverse semigroup action on a groupoid by partial equivalences coincides with the reduced groupoid C*-algebra of the transformation groupoid, giving both positive results and counterexamples.
Given a saturated Fell bundle A over an inverse semigroup S which is semi-abelian in the sense that the fibers over the idempotents of S are commutative, we construct a twisted etale groupoid L such that A can be recovered from L in a canonical way. As an application we recover most of Renault's recent result on the classification of Cartan subalgebras of C*-algebras through twisted etale groupoids.
We consider Fell bundles over discrete groups, and the C*-algebra which is universal for representations of the bundle. We define deformations of Fell bundles, which are new Fell bundles with the same underlying Banach bundle but with the multiplication deformed by a two-cocycle on the group. Every graph algebra can be viewed as the C*-algebra of a Fell bundle, and there are are many cocycles of interest with which to deform them. We thus obtain many of the twisted graph algebras of Kumjian, Pask and Sims. We demonstate the utility of our approach to these twisted graph algebras by proving tha…
We define inverse semigroup actions on topological groupoids by partial equivalences. From such actions, we construct saturated Fell bundles over inverse semigroups and non-Hausdorff étale groupoids. We interpret these as actions on C*-algebras by Hilbert bimodules and describe the section algebras of these Fell bundles. Our constructions give saturated Fell bundles over non-Hausdorff étale groupoids that model actions on locally Hausdorff spaces. We show that these Fell bundles are usually not Morita equivalent to an action by automorphisms. That is, the Packer-Raeburn Stabilisation Trick doe…
Fell's absorption principle states that the left regular representation of a group absorbs any unitary representation of the group when tensored with it. In a weakened form, this result carries over to the left regular representation of a right LCM submonoid of a group and its Nica covariant isometric representations but it fails if the semigroup does not satisfy independence. In this paper we explain how to extend Fell's absorption principle to an arbitrary submonoid $P$ of a group $G$ by using an enhanced version of the left regular representation. Li's semigroup $C^*$-algebra $C^*_s(P)$ and…
We consider fiberwise singly generated Fell-bundles over etale groupoids. Given a continuous real-valued 1-cocycle on the groupoid, there is a natural dynamics on the cross-sectional algebra of the Fell bundle. We study the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger equilibrium states for this dynamics. Following work of Neshveyev on equilibrium states on groupoid C*-algebras, we describe the equilibrium states of the cross-sectional algebra in terms of measurable fields of traces on the C*-algebras of the restrictions of the Fell bundle to the isotropy subgroups of the groupoid. As a special case, we obtain a des…

In this exposition we highlight product systems as the semigroup analogue of Fell bundles. Motivated by Fock creation operators we extend the definition of Fowler's product systems over unital discrete left-cancellative semigroups, via both a concrete and an abstract characterization. We next underline the importance of Fock spaces and Fell bundle methods for obtaining covariant representation results. First, the strongly covariant representations of Sehnem, for product systems over group embeddable semigroups, find their analogue here. Secondly, we give two solutions for the existence of the …
In this work, we give a presentation of the prefix expansion Pr(G) of an inverse semigroup G as recently introduced by Lawson, Margolis and Steinberg which is similar to the universal inverse semigroup defined by the second named author in case G is a group. The inverse semigroup Pr(G) classifies the partial actions of G on spaces. We extend this result and prove that Fell bundles over G correspond bijectively to saturated Fell bundles over Pr(G). In particular, this shows that twisted partial actions of G (on C*-algebras) correspond to twisted (global) actions of Pr(G). Furthermore, we show t…

We study the $C^*$-algebras associated to upper-semicontinuous Fell bundles over second-countable Hausdorff groupoids. Based on ideas going back to the Packer--Raeburn "Stabilization Trick," we construct from each such bundle a groupoid dynamical system whose associated Fell bundle is equivalent to the original bundle. The upshot is that the full and reduced $C^*$-algebras of any saturated upper-semicontinuous Fell bundle are stably isomorphic to the full and reduced crossed products of an associated dynamical system. We apply our results to describe the lattice of ideals of the $C^*$-algebra …
We study simplicity and pure infiniteness criteria for C*-algebras associated to inverse semigroup actions by Hilbert bimodules and to Fell bundles over etale not necessarily Hausdorff groupoids. Inspired by recent work of Exel and Pitts, we introduce essential crossed products for which there are such criteria. In our approach the major role is played by a generalised expectation with values in the local multiplier algebra. We give a long list of equivalent conditions characterising when the essential and reduced C*-algebras coincide. Our most general simplicity and pure infiniteness criteria…
C*-algebras form a 2-category with \Star{}homomorphisms or correspondences as morphisms and unitary intertwiners as 2-morphisms. We use this structure to define weak actions of 2-categories, weakly equivariant maps between weak actions, and modifications between weakly equivariant maps. In the group case, we identify the resulting notions with known ones, including Busby-Smith twisted actions and equivalence of such actions, covariant representations, and saturated Fell bundles. For 2-groups, weak actions combine twists in the sense of Green and Busby-Smith. The Packer-Raeburn Stabilisation Tr…
Twisted étale groupoid algebras have been studied recently in the algebraic setting by several authors in connection with an abstract theory of Cartan pairs of rings. In this paper, we show that extensions of ample groupoids correspond in a precise manner to extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups. In particular, discrete twists over ample groupoids correspond to certain abelian extensions of Boolean inverse semigroups and we show that they are classified by Lausch's second cohomology group of an inverse semigroup. The cohomology group structure corresponds to the Baer sum operation on twists…
We examine a semigroup analogue of the Kumjian-Renault representation of C*-algebras with Cartan subalgebras on twisted groupoids. Specifically, we show how to represent semigroups with distinguished normal subsemigroups as `slice-sections' of groupoid bundles.
We prove uniqueness of representations of Nica-Toeplitz algebras associated to product systems of $C^*$-correspondences over right LCM semigroups by applying our previous abstract uniqueness results developed for $C^*$-precategories. Our results provide an interpretation of conditions identified in work of Fowler and Fowler-Raeburn, and apply also to their crossed product twisted by a product system, in the new context of right LCM semigroups, as well as to a new, Doplicher-Roberts type $C^*$-algebra associated to the Nica-Toeplitz algebra. As a derived construction we develop Nica-Toeplitz cr…
We prove that each exponential functor on the category of finite-dimensional complex inner product spaces and isomorphisms gives rise to an equivariant higher (ie. non-classical) twist of $K$-theory over $G=SU(n)$. This twist is represented by a Fell bundle $\mathcal{E} \to \mathcal{G}$, which reduces to the basic gerbe for the top exterior power functor. The groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ comes equipped with a $G$-action and an augmentation map $\mathcal{G} \to G$, that is an equivariant equivalence. The $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{E})$ associated to $\mathcal{E}$ is stably isomorphic to the section …
We show that the generator of a GNS-symmetric quantum Markov semigroup can be written as the square of a derivation. This generalizes a result of Cipriani and Sauvageot for tracially symmetric semigroups. Compared to the tracially symmetric case, the derivations in the general case satisfy a twisted product rule, reflecting the non-triviality of their modular group. This twist is captured by the new concept of Tomita bimodules we introduce. If the quantum Markov semigroup satisfies a certain additional regularity condition, the associated Tomita bimodule can be realized inside the $L^2$ space …
We first give an overview of the basic theory for discrete unital twisted C*-dynamical systems and their covariant representations on Hilbert C*-modules. After introducing the notion of equivariant representations of such systems and their product with covariant representations, we prove a kind of Fell absorption principle saying that the product of an induced regular equivariant representation with a covariant faithful representation is weakly equivalent to an induced regular covariant representation. This principle is the key to our main result, namely that a certain property, formally weake…
