Organic solar cells have the potential to be low-cost and efficient solar energy converters, with a promising energy balance. They are made from carbon-based semiconductors, which exhibit favourable light absorption and charge generation properties, and can be manufactured by low temperature processes such as printing from solvent-based inks, which are compatible with flexible plastic substrates or even paper. In this review, we will present an overview of the physical function of organic solar cells, their state-of-the-art performance and limitations, as well as novel concepts to achieve a better material stability and higher power conversion efficiencies. We will also briefly review processing and cost in view of the market potential.
For many years the faith of organic photovoltaics has been linked to the one of fullerene, since fullerene has been considered the electron-acceptor of choice in bulk heterojunctions solar cells. In the last years, the number of molecules that can be very competitive in replacing fullerene has increased significantly. In this work, we study by means of different theoretical methods five molecules that have demonstrated to work effectively as acceptors in organic heterojunctions. We discuss the comparison of simulated absorption spectra with the experimental spectra.
Recombination of photogenerated charge carriers in polymer bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells reduces the short circuit current (Jsc) and the fill factor (FF). Identifying the mechanism of recombination is, therefore, fundamentally important for increasing the power conversion efficiency. Light intensity and temperature dependent current-voltage measurements on polymer BHJ cells made from a variety of different semiconducting polymers and fullerenes show that the recombination kinetics are voltage dependent and evolve from first order recombination at short circuit to bimolecular recombinat…
Light induced polarons in solid films of polymer-fullerene blends were studied by applying photoluminescence (PL), photo induced absorption (PIA) techniques as well as electron spin resonance (ESR). The materials used were poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly-[2-methoxy, 5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy) phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV) as donors. As acceptors we used [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester ([C60]PCBM) and various soluble C70-derivates: [C70]PCBM, diphenylmethano[70]fullerene oligoether (C70-DPM-OE), C70-DPM-OE2, and two fullerene dimers, C70-C70 and C60-C70 (all shown in figure 1). In …
Organic bulk-heterojunctions (BHJ) and solar cells containing the trimetallic nitride endohedral fullerene 1-[3-(2-ethyl)hexoxy carbonyl]propyl-1-phenyl-Lu3N@C80 (Lu3N@C80-PCBEH) show an open circuit voltage (VOC) 0.3 V higher than similar devices with [6,6]-phenyl-C[61]-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM). To fully exploit the potential of this acceptor molecule with respect to the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells, the short circuit current (JSC) should be improved to become competitive with the state of the art solar cells. Here, we address factors influencing the JSC in blend…
We present a fully quantum-mechanical model of the electronic dynamics of primary photoexcitations in a polymeric semiconductor heterojunction, which includes both polymer stacking and phonon relaxation. By examining the phonon-induced fluctuations in the state-to-state energy gaps and the exact golden-rule rate constants, we conclude that resonant tunnelling between the primary exciton to delocalized interchain charge-transfer states may be the initial step in the formation of charge-carriers in polymer-based bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic diodes.
The ongoing depletion of fossil fuels has led to an intensive search for additional renewable energy sources. Solar-based technologies could provide sufficient energy to satisfy the global economic demands in the near future. Photovoltaic (PV) cells are the most promising man-made devices for direct solar energy utilization. Understanding the charge separation and charge transport in PV materials at a molecular level is crucial for improving the efficiency of the solar cells. Here, we use light-induced EPR spectroscopy combined with DFT calculations to study the electronic structure of charge …
We report a simple one pot process for the preparation of lead sulphide (PbS) nanocrystals in the conjugated polymer MEH-PPV, and we demonstrate electronic coupling between the two components.
In polymeric semiconductors, charge carriers are polarons, which means that the excess charge deforms the molecular structure of the polymer chain that hosts it. This effect results in distinctive signatures in the vibrational modes of the polymer. We probe polaron photo- generation dynamics at polymer:fullerene heterojunctions by monitoring its time-resolved resonance-Raman spectrum following ultrafast photoexcitation. We conclude that polarons emerge within 200 fs, which is nearly two orders of magnitude faster than exciton localisation in the neat polymer film. Surprisingly, further vibrati…
Blends of polymer and C$_{60}$-derived molecules are in the spotlight in recent years for application in organic photovoltaics, forming what is known as bulk-heterojunction active layers. The character of the heterojunction is determinant, with clear relevance of morphology and phase separation. To better understand the morphology of the systems, we present a classical molecular dynamics (CMD) simulation of polymer/fullerene (P3HT/C$_{60}$) blends, coming from different starting points, using the specifically designed Nanomol Force Field based on the Universal Force Field. We use not-so-short …
Organic solar cells (OSCs) containing an active layer consisting of a nanostructured blend of a conjugated polymer like poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and an electron acceptor molecule have the potential of competing against silicon-based photovoltaic panels. However, this potential is unfulfilled primarily due to interrelated production and stability issues. The generally employed spin coating process for fabricating organic solar cells cannot be scaled up. Recently, He et al., have reported that the gelation of P3HT with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC60BM) under sub-ambient co…
We investigated photogeneration yield and recombination dynamics in blends of poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(30,70-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV) with [6,6]- phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) by means of temperature dependent time delayed collection field (TDCF) measurements. In MDMO-PPV:PC61BM we find a strongly field dependent polaron pair dissociation which can be attributed to geminate recombination in the device. Our findings are in good agreement with field dependent photoluminescence measurements published before, supporting a scena…
We report both transport measurements and spectroscopic data of polymer/fullerene blend photovoltaics using a small library of fullerene esters to correlate device properties with a range of functionality and structural diversity of the ester substituent. We observe that minor structural changes can lead to significant differences in device efficiency and lifetime. Surprisingly, we have found that isomeric R-groups in the fullerene ester-based devices we have studied have very different efficiencies. The characteristic lifetimes derived from both transport and spectroscopic measurements are ge…
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently attracted attention due to their superlative optical and electronic properties. In particular, their extraordinary optical absorption and semiconducting band gap have enabled demonstrations of photovoltaic response from heterostructures composed of TMDCs and other organic or inorganic materials. However, these early studies were limited to devices at the micrometer scale and/or failed to exploit the unique optical absorption properties of single-layer TMDCs. Here we present an experimental realization of a large-area type-I…
In this paper we consider the essential electronic excited states in parallel chains of semiconducting polymers that are currently being explored for photovoltaic and light-emitting diode applications. In particular, we focus upon various type II donor-acceptor heterojunctions and explore the relation between the exciton binding energy to the band off-set in determining the device characteristic of a particular type II heterojunction material. As a general rule, when the exciton binding energy is greater than the band off-set at the heterojunction, the exciton will remain the lowest energy exc…
Hybrid conjugated polymer/fullerene filaments based on MEH-PPV/PVP/PCBM are prepared by electrospinning, and their properties assessed by scanning electron, atomic and lateral force, tunnelling, and confocal microscopy, as well as by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence quantum yield and spatially-resolved fluorescence. Highlighted features include ribbon-shape of the realized fibers, and the persistence of a network serving as a template for heterogeneous active layers in solar cell devices. A set of favorable characteristics is evidenced in t…
We observe a universal feature in the frequency dependence of intensity modulated photocurrent Iph based on studies of a variety of efficient bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells (BHJ-PSCs). This feature of Iph appears in the form of a local maximum in the 5 kHz < frequency < 10 kHz range and is observed to be largely independent of the external parameters such as modulated light intensity (Lac), wavelength, temperature (T), and external field (EF) over a wide range. Simplistic kinetic models involving carrier generation, recombination and extraction processes are used to interpret the over…
We investigate the mechanical properties of $π$-conjugated polymeric materials composed of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and fullerene C$_{60}$ using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we perform tensile simulations of P3HT:C$_{60}$ composites with varied degrees of polymerization and C$_{60}$ mass fractions to obtain their stress-strain responses. Decomposition of stress tensor into kinetic energy and virial contributions indicates that the tensile moduli of the pure P3HT samples are greatly dependent on non-bonded interactions and on bonded interactions…
Photoinduced polarons in solid films of polymer-fullerene blends were studied by photoluminescence (PL), photoinduced absorption (PIA) and electron spin resonance (ESR). The donor materials used were P3HT and MEH-PPV. As acceptors we employed PC60BM as reference and various soluble C70-derivates: PC70BM, two different diphenylmethano-[70]fullerene oligoether (C70-DPM-OE) and two dimers, C70-C70 and C60-C70. Blend films containing C70 revealed characteristic spectroscopic signatures not seen with C60. Light-induced ESR showed signals at g\geq2.005, assigned to an electron localized on the C70 c…
Colloidal zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are frequently used in the field of organic photovoltaics for the realization of solution-producible, electron-selective interfacial layers. Despite of the widespread use, there is a lack of detailed investigations regarding the impact of structural properties of the particles on the device performance. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles with varying surface-area-to-volume ratio were synthesized and implemented into polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells with a gas-permeable top electrode. By comparing the electrical characteristics before and a…
The quantum-dynamical mechanism of photoinduced subpicosecond exciton dissociation and the concomitant formation of a charge-separated state at a TFB:F8BT polymer heterojunction is elucidated. The analysis is based upon a two-state vibronic coupling Hamiltonian including an explicit 24-mode representation of a phonon bath comprising high-frequency (C$=$C stretch) and low-frequency (torsional) modes. The initial relaxation behavior is characterized by coherent oscillations, along with the decay through an extended nonadiabatic coupling region. This region is located in the vicinity of a conical…
The major loss mechanism of photogenerated polarons was investigated in P3HT:PCBM solar cells by the photo-CELIV technique. For pristine and annealed devices, we find that the experimental data can be explained by a bimolecular recombination rate reduced by a factor of about ten (pristine) and 25 (annealed) as compared to Langevin theory. Aided by a macroscopic device model, we discuss the implications of the lowered loss rate on the characteristics of polymer:fullerene solar cells.
We determined the dominant polaron recombination loss mechanism in pristine and annealed polythiophene:fullerene blend solar cells by applying the photo-induced charge extraction by linearly increasing voltage (photo-CELIV) method in dependence on temperature. In pristine samples, we find a strongly temperature dependent bimolecular polaron recombination rate, which is reduced as compared to the Langevin theory. For the annealed sample, we observe a polaron decay rate which follows a third order of carrier concentration almost temperature independently.
A polysquaraine low band gap polymer was synthesized by Yamamoto coupling of a monomeric dibromo indolenine squaraine dye. The resulting polymer has a weight average molar mass in the order of Mw ~30.000-50.000 and a polydispersity of ca. 1.7 as determined by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC). The electronic properties of monomer and polymer were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, absorption and emission spectroscopy. Owing to exciton coupling the absorption bands of the polymer are red-shifted and strongly broadened compared to the monomer squaraine dye. Bulk heterojunction solar cells wer…
The separation of photogenerated polaron pairs in organic bulk heterojunction solar cells is the intermediate but crucial step between exciton dissociation and charge transport to the electrodes. In state-of-the-art devices, above 80% of all polaron pairs are separated at fields of below $10^7$V/m. In contrast, considering just the Coulomb binding of the polaron pair, electric fields above $10^8$V/m would be needed to reach similar yields. In order to resolve this discrepancy, we performed kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of polaron pair dissociation in donor--acceptor blends, considering deloc…
A ferroelectric field effect in the bulk heterojunction was found when an external electric field (EEF) was applied on the active layer of polymer solar cells (PSCs) during the annealing process of the active layer spin-coated with poly (3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM). For one direction field, the short circuit current density of PSCs was improved from 7.2 to 8.0 mA/cm2, the power conversion efficiency increased from 2.4 to 2.8%, and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency increased from 42 to 49% corresponding to the different EEF magnitu…
We performed temperature dependent transient photovoltage and photocurrent measurements on poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methylester bulk heterojuction solar cells. We found a strongly charge carrier concentration and temperature dependent Langevin recombination prefactor. The observed recombination mechanism is discussed in terms of bimolecular recombination. The experimental results were compared with charge carrier extraction by linearly increasing voltage (photo-CELIV) measurements done on the same blend system. We explain the charge carrier dynamics, following an ap…
Mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions comprising polymer and twodimensional (2D) semiconductors have many characteristics of an ideal charge separation interface for optoelectronic and photonic applications. However, the photoelectron dynamics at polymer- 2D semiconductor heterojunction interfaces are currently not sufficiently understood to guide the optimization of devices for these applications. This manuscript is a report of a systematic exploration of the time-dependent photophysical processes that occur upon photoexcitation of a type-II heterojunction between the polymer PTB7 a…
We report transient electron paramagnetic resonance (trEPR) measurements with sub-microsecond time resolution performed on a P3HT:PCBM blend at low temperature. The trEPR spectrum immediately following photoexcitation reveals signatures of spin-correlated polaron pairs. The pair partners (positive polarons in P3HT and negative polarons in PCBM) can be identified by their characteristic g-values. The fact that the polaron pair states exhibit strong non-Boltzmann population unambiguously shows that the constituents of each pair are geminate, i.e. originate from one exciton. We demonstrate that c…
We theoretically investigate the dynamical stability of one-dimensional fullerene polymers by computing the phonon dispersion relations within the atomistic approach. We find that only seven models among 54 models proposed previously [J. Phys. Chem. A 119, 3048 (2015)] are dynamically stable. We show that the low temperature specific heat of them is proportional to the square root of the temperature in a wider range of temperature compared to the case of single-walled carbon nanotubes.
The work concerns the analysis of experimental time-resolved ESR spectra in photoexcited polymer:fullerene blend, consisting of poly(3-hexilthiophene) and fullerene [6,6]-phenyl C_{61} -butyric acid methyl ester (at low temperature T = 100 K). The spectra are assumed to be determined by spin-coherent pairs of charged polarons P^{+} and P^{-} generated in the singlet state. The analysis is made within simple model of a set of first order processes, in which P^{+}P$^{-}-pair spin evolution is described by the stochastic Liouville equation, allowing for fairly accurate description of experimental…
The two-dimensional polymer structure and lattice dynamics of the superionic conductor Li4 C60 are investigated by neutron diffraction and spectroscopy. The peculiar bonding architecture of this compound is definitely confirmed through the precise localisation of the carbon atoms involved in the intermolecular bonds. The spectral features of this phase are revealed through ab-initio lattice dynamics calculations and inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The neutron observables are found to be in very good agreement with the simulations which predict a partial charge transfer from the Li at…
The time dependence of device performance has been measured for photocells using blends containing the conjugated polymer, poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) with two different functionalized C60 electron acceptor molecules: commercially available [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) or [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid octadecyl ester (PCBOD) produced in this laboratory. Performance was characterized by the short-circuit current output of the devices, with the time dependence of PCBM samples typically degrading exponentially. Variations in the charact…
In this work, a novel electrospun conductive polymer nanocomposite made of polycaprolactone with an exohedral complex made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and fullerene C60 was prepared and characterized. The preparation was straightforward and the complexes self-assembled within the nanocomposite fibers. The nanocomposite showed electrical switching behavior due to charge accumulation of fullerene C60 upon electrical stimulation. Write-once read-many memory devices were fabricated by electrospinning a nanocomposite with 0.8%wt. fullerene C60 onto interdigitated coplanar electrodes. The device…
The electronic properties of co-evaporated mixtures (blends) of manganese phthalocyanine and the fullerene C$_{60}$ (MnPc:C$_{60}$) have been studied as a function of the concentration of the two constituents using two supplementary electron spectroscopic methods, photoemission spectroscopy (PES) as well as electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in transmission. Our PES measurements provide a detailed picture of the electronic structure measured with different excitation energies as well as different mixing ratios between MnPc and C$_{60}$. Besides a relative energy shift, the occupied elect…
We present a theory of the electronic structure and photophysics of 1:1 blends of derivatives of polyparaphenylenevinylene and fullerenes. Within the same Coulomb-correlated Hamiltonian applied previously to interacting chains of single-component $π$-conjugated polymers, we find an exciplex state that occurs below the polymer's optical exciton. Weak absorption from the ground state occurs to the exciplex. We explain transient photoinduced absorptions in the blend, observed for both above-gap and below-gap photoexcitations, within our theory. Photoinduced absorptions for above-gap photoexcitati…
We present first-principles band calculations as well as structural optimization of the orthorhombic K$_1$C$_{60}$ polymerized phase. We found three-dimensional inter-fullerene bonding/anti-bonding characters consisting of $t_{1u}$ molecular orbitals with $p$-like symmetry in the conduction bands. The formation of the four-membered ring connecting the fullerenes lifts the $p_x$ band from the continuous $p_y$-$p_z$ band, where the z-axis is parallel to the chain. The asymmetry between $p_x$ and $p_y$ may play an important role in binding the chains with the rotational configuration proposed by …
Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on ADA-type (acceptor-donor-acceptor) non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) exhibit improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to the conventional fullerene-based analogues. The optoelectronic properties of OSC active layer blends are correlated to their underlying structural dynamics and therefore influence the device performance. Using synergistically different neutron spectroscopy techniques, we studied the dynamics of binary and ternary blends made of the NFAs O-IDTBR and O-IDFBR and the regioregular donor polymer P3HT. Deuteration was considered for a co…
Transparent photovoltaic (TPV) devices have the great potential to apply as smart windows in the construction and agriculture field. The efficiencies of TPVs are growing up quickly in recent years and the champion efficiency even exceeds 10%. However, the transparency is still hard to further improved after the average visible transmission (AVT) achieved 73%. Each component of the TPV devices will influent the transparency of the TPV. To date, the TPV with the AVT over 80% has not been reported yet. In this work, we describe the fullerene-based highly transparent solar cells. The CuSCN/C60 het…
We studied the recombination dynamics of charge carriers in organic bulk heterojunction solar cells made of the blend system poly(2,5-bis(3-dodecyl thiophen-2-yl) thieno[2,3-b]thiophene) (pBTCT-C12):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) with a donor--acceptor ratio of 1:1 and 1:4. The techniques of charge carrier extraction by linearly increasing voltage (photo-CELIV) and, as local probe, time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) were used. We observed a difference in the initially extracted charge carrier concentration in the photo-CELIV experiment by one order of magnitude, w…
The active layer crystallinity has long been associated with favourable organic solar cells (OSCs) properties such as high mobility and Fill Factor. In particular, this applies to acceptor materials such as fullerene-derivatives and the most recent Non-Fullerene Acceptors (NFAs), which are now surpassing 19% of Power Conversion Efficiency. Despite these advantages are being commonly attributed to their 3-dimensional crystal packing motif in the single crystal, the bridge that links the acceptor crystal packing from single crystals to solar cells has not clearly been shown yet. In this work, we…
We investigate the electronic dynamics of model organic photovoltaic (OPV) system consisting of polyphenylene vinylene (PPV) oligomers and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methylester (PCBM) blend using a mixed molecular mechanics/quantum mechanics (MM/QM) approach. Using a heuristic model that connects energy gap fluctuations to the average electronic couplings and decoherence times, we provide an estimate of the state-to-state internal conversion rates within the manifold of the lowest few electronic excitations. We find that the lowest few excited states of a model interface are rapidly mixed …
Driven by the rapid development of non-fullerene electron acceptors (NFAs), the power conversion efficiencies of organic solar cells (OSCs) have reached levels suitable for commercial applications. However, the poor operational stability of high-performance NFA OSCs is a remaining fundamental challenge that must be addressed. Whilst previous studies have primarily focused on the NFA component, we consider here the degradation pathways of both the donor and acceptor materials in the benchmark PM6:Y6 blend. Here, we show that light soaking greatly increases the energetic disorder and trap state …
Non-fullerene acceptors based on perylenediimides (PDIs) have garnered significant interest as an alternative to fullerene acceptors in organic photovoltaics (OPVs), but their charge transport phenomena are not well understood, especially in bulk heterojunctions (BHJs). Here, we investigate charge transport and current fluctuations by performing correlated low-frequency noise and impedance spectroscopy measurements on two BHJ OPV systems, one employing a fullerene acceptor and the other employing a dimeric PDI acceptor. In the dark, these measurements reveal that PDI-based OPVs have a greater …
We present a neutron spectroscopy based method to study quantitatively the partial miscibility and phase behaviour of an organic photovoltaic active layer made of conjugated polymer:small molecule blends, presently illustrated with the regio-random poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and fullerene [6,6]-Phenyl C$_{61}$ butyric acid methyl ester (RRa-P3HT:PCBM) system. We perform both inelastic neutron scattering and quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements to study the structural dynamics of blends of different compositions enabling us to resolve the phase behaviour. The difference of neutron…
Earlier reports demonstrated that ternary organic solar cells (OSC) made of donor polymers (D) blended with different mixtures of fullerene acceptors (A:A) performed very similarly. This finding is surprising, as the corresponding fullerene LUMO levels are slightly different, which might result in decisive differences in the charge transfer step. We investigate ternary OSC (D:A:A) made of the donor polymer P3HT with stoichiometric mixtures of different fullerene derivatives, PC60BM:PC70BM and PC70BM:IC60BA, respectively. Using quantitative electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) we can distingui…
Time-dependent measurements of both power conversion efficiency and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy have been observed for solar cell blends containing the polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) with two different functionalized C60 electron acceptor molecules: commercially available [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) or [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid octadecyl ester (PCBOD) produced in this laboratory. Efficiency was found to decay with an exponential time dependence, while spectroscopic features show saturating exponential behavior. Time constants extracted …
We present a first-principles investigation of the excited-state properties of electron acceptors in organic photovoltaics including C$_{60}$, C$_{70}$, [6,6]-phenyl-C$_{61}$-butyric-acid-methyl-ester ([C$_{60}$]PCBM), and bis-[C$_{60}$]PCBM using many-body perturbation theory within the Hedin's $G_0W_0$ approximation and an efficient Lanczos approach. Calculated vertical ionization potentials (VIP) and vertical electron affinities (VEA) of C$_{60}$ and C$_{70}$ agree very well with experimental values measured in gas phase. The density of states of all three molecules is also compared to phot…
In organic photovoltaics, the mechanism by which free electrons and holes are generated overcoming the Coulomb attraction is a currently much debated topic. To elucidate this mechanism at a molecular level, we carried out a combined electronic structure and quantum dynamical analysis that captures the elementary events from the exciton dissociation to the free carrier generation at polymer/fullerene donor-acceptor heterojunctions. Our calculations show that experimentally observed efficient charge separations can be explained by a combination of two effects: First, the delocalization of charge…
Organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently shown a rapid improvement in their performance, bringing power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) closer to the point where commercial applications of the technology become viable. However, the low open-circuit voltage (Voc) of OSCs relative to their optical gap still limits PCEs to below 20%. A key factor contributing to the large Voc deficit in OSCs is non-radiative recombination to spin-triplet excitons, which is widely, but not universally, observed in blends using both fullerene and non-fullerene electron acceptors. Here, we present an experimental fra…
Understanding of degradation mechanisms in polymer:fullerene bulk-heterojunctions on the microscopic level aimed at improving their intrinsic stability is crucial for the breakthrough of organic photovoltaics. These materials are vulnerable to exposure to light and/or oxygen, hence they involve electronic excitations. To unambiguously probe the excited states of various multiplicities and their reactions with oxygen, we applied combined magneto-optical methods based on multifrequency (9 and 275 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), photoluminescence (PL), and PL-detected magnetic resonan…
Inclusion of heavy metal atoms in a polymer backbone allows transitions between the singlet and triplet manifolds. Interfacial dissociation of triplet excitons constitutes a viable mechanism for enhancing photovoltaic (PV) efficiencies in polymer heterojunction-based solar cells. The PV efficiency from polymer solar cells utilizing a ladder-type poly (para-phenylene) polymer (PhLPPP) with trace quantity of Pd atoms and a fullerene derivative (PCBM) is much higher than its counterpart (MeLPPP) with no Pd atom. Evidence is presented for the formation of a weak ground-state charge-transfer comple…
In organic solar cells, photogenerated singlet excitons form charge transfer (CT) complexes, which subsequently split into free charge carriers. Here, we consider the contributions of excess energy and molecular quadrupole moments to the charge separation process. We investigate charge photogeneration in two separate bulk heterojunction systems consisting of the polymer donor PTB7-Th and two non-fullerene acceptors, ITIC and h-ITIC. CT state dissociation in these donor-acceptor systems is monitored by charge density decay dynamics obtained from transient absorption experiments. We study the el…
In polymer:fullerene solar cells, the origin of the losses in the field-dependent photocurrent is still controversially debated. We contribute to the ongoing discussion by performing photo-induced charge extraction measurements on poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl):[6,6]-phenyl-C$_{61}$ butyric acid methyl ester solar cells in order to investigate the processes ruling charge carrier decay. Calculating the drift length of photogenerated charges, we find that polaron recombination is not limiting the photocurrent for annealed devices. Additionally, we applied Monte Carlo simulations on blends of co…
Open circuit voltage decay measurements are performed on methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) perovskite solar cells to investigate the charge carrier recombination dynamics. The measurements are compared to the two reference polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells based on P3HT:PC60BM and PTB7:PC70BM blends. In the perovskite devices, two very different time domains of the voltage decay are found, with a first drop on a short time scale that is similar to the organic solar cells. However, two major differences are also observed. 65-70% of the maximum photovoltage persists on much…
We have performed resistivity measurements of poly[3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene]: poly[styrenesulfonate] (PEDOT:PSS) films with varying concentrations of glycerol. Resistivity is seen to decrease exponentially from roughly 3 ohm-cm for pure PEDOT:PSS to 3x10-2 ohm-cm for 35 mg/cm3 glycerol in PEDOT:PSS. Beyond this concentration adding glycerol does not significantly change resistivity. Bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells using these variously doped PEDOT:PSS layers as electrodes were studied to characterize the effects on efficiency and lifetime. Although our data display significant scatte…
Non-fullerene acceptor (NFA)-based ternary bulk heterojunction solar cells (TSC) are the most efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) today due to their broader absorption and quantum efficiencies (QE) often surpassing those of corresponding binary blends. We study how the energetics driving charge transfer at the electron donor:electron acceptor (D/A) interfaces impact the QE in blends of PBDB-T-2F donor with several pairs of lower bandgap NFAs. As in binary blends, the ionization energy offset between donor and acceptor (ΔIE) controls the QE and maximizes for ΔIE > 0.5 eV. However, ΔIE is not c…
All-organic-based photovoltaic solar cells have attracted considerable attention because of their low-cost processing and short energy payback time. In such systems the primary dissociation of an optical excitation into a pair of photocarriers has been recently shown to be extremely rapid and efficient, but the physical reason for this remains unclear. Here, two-dimensional photocurrent excitation spectroscopy, a novel non-linear optical spectroscopy, is used to probe the ultrafast coherent decay of photoexcitations into charge-producing states in a polymer:fullerene based solar cell. The two-…
Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Z-contrast imaging we have demonstrated elongated nanostructure formation of fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) within an organic host through annealing. The annealing provides an enhanced mobility of the PCBM molecules and, with good initial dispersion, allows for the formation of exaggerated grain growth within the polymer host. We have assembled these nanostructures within the regioregular conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). This PCBM elongated nanostructure formation maybe responsible for the…
Charge carrier recombination is studied in operational organic solar cells made from the polymer:fullerene system PCDTBT:PC71BM (poly[N-9"-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl-2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole)] : [6,6]-phenyl-C$_{70}$-butyric acid methyl ester). A newly developed technique High Intensity Resistance dependent PhotoVoltage (HI-RPV) is presented for reliably quantifying the bimolecular recombination coefficient independently of variations in experimental conditions, thereby resolving key limitations of previous experimental approaches. Experiments are performed on sola…
