The time dependence of device performance has been measured for photocells using blends containing the conjugated polymer, poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) with two different functionalized C60 electron acceptor molecules: commercially available [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) or [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid octadecyl ester (PCBOD) produced in this laboratory. Performance was characterized by the short-circuit current output of the devices, with the time dependence of PCBM samples typically degrading exponentially. Variations in the characteristic lifetime of the devices were observed to depend on the molar fraction of the electron acceptor molecules (calculated with respect to the MEH-PPV monomer fraction). In comparison to the PCBM samples, the stability of the PCBOD blends was significantly enhanced, with a one or two order of magnitude improvement. Corresponding spectroscopic data with similar time evolution as the transport measurements suggests an independent means for determining and understanding degradation mechanisms.
Development of new greenhouse gas scavengers is actively pursued nowadays. Volatility caused solvent consumption and significant regeneration costs associated with the aqueous amine solutions motivate search for more technologically and economically advanced solutions. We hereby used hybrid density functional theory to characterize thermodynamics, structure, electronic and solvation properties of amino and carboxamido functionalized C60 fullerene. C60 is non-volatile and supports a large density of amino groups on its surface. Attachment of polar groups to fullerene C60 adjusts its dipole mome…
Using the density functional theory calculations, we studied the ferroelectric, electrical and optical properties of series of bias-controllable endohedral fullerenes (TM@C28, TM= Ti-Ni). The important finding is that Cr@C28 has a large electric dipole moment and an appropriate bandgap (~1.2eV) as building blocks for ferroelectric-photovoltaic materials. By sandwiching Cr@C28 molecules between two van der Waals layers, e.g., graphene or transition metal dichalcogenides, the heterostructures may have exotic ferroelectric and photovoltaic properties with high tunability and performance.
In this article, the stability of p-i-n perovskite solar cells is studied under accelerated heat lifetime conditions (60 oC ,85oC and N2 atmosphere). By using a combination of buffer layer engineering, impedance spectroscopy and other characterization techniques, we propose the interaction of the perovskite active layer with the top Al metal electrode through diffusion mechanisms as the major thermal degradation pathway for planar inverted perovskite photovoltaics (PVs) under 85oC heat conditions. We show that by using thick solution processed fullerene buffer layer the perovskite active layer…
While halogenation of graphene presents a fascinating avenue to the construction of a chemically and physically diverse class of systems, their application in photovoltaics has been hindered by often prohibitively large optical gaps. Herein we study the effects of partial bromination and chlorination on the structure and optoelectronic properties of both graphane and fluorographene. We find brominated and chlorinated fluorographene derivatives to be as stable as graphane making them likely to be durable even at elevated temperatures. A detailed investigation of the systems band structure revea…
We evaluate the performances of ab initio GW calculations for the ionization energies and HOMO-LUMO gaps of thirteen gas phase molecules of interest for organic electronic and photovoltaic applications, including the C60 fullerene, pentacene, free-base porphyrins and phtalocyanine, PTCDA, and standard monomers such as thiophene, fluorene, benzothiazole or thiadiazole. Standard G0W0 calculations, that is starting from eigenstates obtained with local or semilocal functionals, significantly improve the ionization energy and band gap as compared to density functional theory Kohn-Sham results, but …
We present a first-principles investigation of the excited-state properties of electron acceptors in organic photovoltaics including C$_{60}$, C$_{70}$, [6,6]-phenyl-C$_{61}$-butyric-acid-methyl-ester ([C$_{60}$]PCBM), and bis-[C$_{60}$]PCBM using many-body perturbation theory within the Hedin's $G_0W_0$ approximation and an efficient Lanczos approach. Calculated vertical ionization potentials (VIP) and vertical electron affinities (VEA) of C$_{60}$ and C$_{70}$ agree very well with experimental values measured in gas phase. The density of states of all three molecules is also compared to phot…
We investigate the mechanical properties of $π$-conjugated polymeric materials composed of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and fullerene C$_{60}$ using coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we perform tensile simulations of P3HT:C$_{60}$ composites with varied degrees of polymerization and C$_{60}$ mass fractions to obtain their stress-strain responses. Decomposition of stress tensor into kinetic energy and virial contributions indicates that the tensile moduli of the pure P3HT samples are greatly dependent on non-bonded interactions and on bonded interactions…
We present a neutron spectroscopy based method to study quantitatively the partial miscibility and phase behaviour of an organic photovoltaic active layer made of conjugated polymer:small molecule blends, presently illustrated with the regio-random poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and fullerene [6,6]-Phenyl C$_{61}$ butyric acid methyl ester (RRa-P3HT:PCBM) system. We perform both inelastic neutron scattering and quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements to study the structural dynamics of blends of different compositions enabling us to resolve the phase behaviour. The difference of neutron…
Superconducting behavior even under harsh ambient conditions is expected to occur in La@C(60) if it could be isolated from the primary metallofullerene soot when functionalized by CF(3) radicals. We use ab initio density functional theory calculations to compare the stability and electronic structure of C(60) and the La@C(60) endohedral metallofullerene to their counterparts functionalized by CF(3). We found that CF(3) radicals favor binding to C(60) and La@C(60), and have identified the most stable isomers. Structures with an even number m of radicals are energetically preferred for C(60) and…
Non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) are excellent light harvesters, yet the origin of such high optical extinction is not well understood. In this work, we investigate the absorption strength of NFAs by building a database of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of ~500 pi-conjugated molecules. The calculations are first validated by comparison with experimental measurements on liquid and solid state using common fullerene and non-fullerene acceptors. We find that the molar extinction coefficient (ε_(d,max)) shows reasonable agreement between calculation in vacuum and exper…
A new multifunctional 2D material is theoretically predicted based on systematic ab-initio calculations and model simulations for the honeycomb lattice of endohedral fullerene W@C28 molecules. It has structural bistability, ferroelectricity, multiple magnetic phases, and excellent valley characters and can be easily functionalized by the proximity effect with magnetic isolators such as MnTiO3. Furthermore, we may also manipulate the valley Hall and spin transport properties by selectively switch a few W@C28 molecules to the metastable phase. These findings pave a new way in integrate different…
We report both transport measurements and spectroscopic data of polymer/fullerene blend photovoltaics using a small library of fullerene esters to correlate device properties with a range of functionality and structural diversity of the ester substituent. We observe that minor structural changes can lead to significant differences in device efficiency and lifetime. Surprisingly, we have found that isomeric R-groups in the fullerene ester-based devices we have studied have very different efficiencies. The characteristic lifetimes derived from both transport and spectroscopic measurements are ge…
Time-dependent measurements of both power conversion efficiency and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy have been observed for solar cell blends containing the polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) with two different functionalized C60 electron acceptor molecules: commercially available [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) or [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid octadecyl ester (PCBOD) produced in this laboratory. Efficiency was found to decay with an exponential time dependence, while spectroscopic features show saturating exponential behavior. Time constants extracted …
Blends of polymer and C$_{60}$-derived molecules are in the spotlight in recent years for application in organic photovoltaics, forming what is known as bulk-heterojunction active layers. The character of the heterojunction is determinant, with clear relevance of morphology and phase separation. To better understand the morphology of the systems, we present a classical molecular dynamics (CMD) simulation of polymer/fullerene (P3HT/C$_{60}$) blends, coming from different starting points, using the specifically designed Nanomol Force Field based on the Universal Force Field. We use not-so-short …
In the last three decades, zero-dimensional, one-dimensional, and two-dimensional carbon nanomaterials (i.e., fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, respectively) have attracted significant attention from the scientific community due to their unique electronic, optical, thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. While early work showed that these properties could enable high performance in selected applications, issues surrounding structural inhomogeneity and imprecise assembly have impeded robust and reliable implementation of carbon nanomaterials in widespread technologies. However, …
Transparent photovoltaic (TPV) devices have the great potential to apply as smart windows in the construction and agriculture field. The efficiencies of TPVs are growing up quickly in recent years and the champion efficiency even exceeds 10%. However, the transparency is still hard to further improved after the average visible transmission (AVT) achieved 73%. Each component of the TPV devices will influent the transparency of the TPV. To date, the TPV with the AVT over 80% has not been reported yet. In this work, we describe the fullerene-based highly transparent solar cells. The CuSCN/C60 het…
The ongoing depletion of fossil fuels has led to an intensive search for additional renewable energy sources. Solar-based technologies could provide sufficient energy to satisfy the global economic demands in the near future. Photovoltaic (PV) cells are the most promising man-made devices for direct solar energy utilization. Understanding the charge separation and charge transport in PV materials at a molecular level is crucial for improving the efficiency of the solar cells. Here, we use light-induced EPR spectroscopy combined with DFT calculations to study the electronic structure of charge …
The ability to precisely control the electronic coupling/decoupling of adsorbates from surfaces is an essential goal. Here, we provide atomic-scale experimental and theoretical investigations of a semi-insulatinglayer grown on a silicon surface via its epitaxy with CaF2. We showthat, following the formation of a wetting layer, the ensuing organiz…

Highlighted features include ribbon-shape of the realized fibers, and the persistence of a network serving as a template for heterogeneous active layers in solar cell devices. A set of favorable characteristics is evidenced in t…
Despite many advances towards improving the stability of organic photovoltaic devices, environmental degradation under ambient conditions remains a challenging obstacle for future application. Particularly conventional systems employing fullerene derivatives are prone to oxidise under illumination, limiting their applicability. Herein, we report on the environmental stability of the small molecule donor DRCN5T together with the fullerene acceptor PC70BM. We find that this system exhibits exceptional device stability, mainly due to almost constant short-circuit current. By employing ultrafast f…

Carbon materials are excellent candidates for photovoltaic solar cells: they are Earth-abundant, possess high optical absorption, and superior thermal and photostability. Here we report on solar cells with active layers made solely of carbon nanomaterials that present the same advantages of conjugated polymer-based solar cells - namely solution processable, potentially flexible, and chemically tunable - but with significantly increased photostability and the possibility to revert photodegradation. The device active layer composition is optimized using ab-initio density functional theory calcul…
Stability is one of the most important challenges facing organic solar cells (OSC) on their path to commercialization. In the high-performance material system PM6:Y6 studied here, investigate degradation mechanisms of inverted photovoltaic devices. We have identified two distinct degradation pathways: one requires presence of both illumination and oxygen and features a short-circuit current reduction, the other one is induced thermally and marked by severe losses of open-circuit voltage and fill factor. We focus our investigation on the thermally accelerated degradation. Our findings show that…
Colloidal zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are frequently used in the field of organic photovoltaics for the realization of solution-producible, electron-selective interfacial layers. Despite of the widespread use, there is a lack of detailed investigations regarding the impact of structural properties of the particles on the device performance. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles with varying surface-area-to-volume ratio were synthesized and implemented into polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells with a gas-permeable top electrode. By comparing the electrical characteristics before and a…
We report the application of a coordination polymer semiconductor, tin(II) thiocyanate [Sn(SCN)$_2$] as an ultrathin anode interlayer in organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Sub-10 nm layers of Sn(SCN)$_2$ with high smoothness and excellent transparency having an optical band gap of 3.9 eV were deposited from an alcohol-based solution at room temperature without post-deposition annealing. Inserting Sn(SCN)$_2$ as an anode interlayer in polymer:fullerene OPVs drastically reduces the recombination loss due to the exciton-blocking energy levels of Sn(SCN)$_2$. At the optimum thickness of 7 nm, an averag…
Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Z-contrast imaging we have demonstrated elongated nanostructure formation of fullerene derivative [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) within an organic host through annealing. The annealing provides an enhanced mobility of the PCBM molecules and, with good initial dispersion, allows for the formation of exaggerated grain growth within the polymer host. We have assembled these nanostructures within the regioregular conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). This PCBM elongated nanostructure formation maybe responsible for the…
Inclusion of heavy metal atoms in a polymer backbone allows transitions between the singlet and triplet manifolds. Interfacial dissociation of triplet excitons constitutes a viable mechanism for enhancing photovoltaic (PV) efficiencies in polymer heterojunction-based solar cells. The PV efficiency from polymer solar cells utilizing a ladder-type poly (para-phenylene) polymer (PhLPPP) with trace quantity of Pd atoms and a fullerene derivative (PCBM) is much higher than its counterpart (MeLPPP) with no Pd atom. Evidence is presented for the formation of a weak ground-state charge-transfer comple…
All-organic-based photovoltaic solar cells have attracted considerable attention because of their low-cost processing and short energy payback time. In such systems the primary dissociation of an optical excitation into a pair of photocarriers has been recently shown to be extremely rapid and efficient, but the physical reason for this remains unclear. Here, two-dimensional photocurrent excitation spectroscopy, a novel non-linear optical spectroscopy, is used to probe the ultrafast coherent decay of photoexcitations into charge-producing states in a polymer:fullerene based solar cell. The two-…
Understanding of degradation mechanisms in polymer:fullerene bulk-heterojunctions on the microscopic level aimed at improving their intrinsic stability is crucial for the breakthrough of organic photovoltaics. These materials are vulnerable to exposure to light and/or oxygen, hence they involve electronic excitations. To unambiguously probe the excited states of various multiplicities and their reactions with oxygen, we applied combined magneto-optical methods based on multifrequency (9 and 275 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), photoluminescence (PL), and PL-detected magnetic resonan…
The great progress in organic photovoltaics (OPV) over the past few years has been largely achieved by the development of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs), with power conversion efficiencies now approaching 20%. To further improve device performance, loss mechanisms must be identified and minimized. Triplet states are known to adversely affect device performance, since they can form energetically trapped excitons on low-lying states that are responsible for non-radiative losses or even device degradation. Halogenation of OPV materials has long been employed to tailor energy levels and to enhance…
