Motivated by recent observations of $C_4$ symmetry breaking in strongly correlated two-dimensional electron systems on a square lattice, we analyze this phenomenon within an extended Fermi liquid approach. It is found that the symmetry violation is triggered by a continuous topological phase transition associated with exchange of antiferromagnetic fluctuations. In contrast to predictions of mean-field theory, the structure of a part of the single-particle spectrum violating $C_4$ symmetry is found to be highly anisotropic, with a peak located in the vicinity of saddle points.
In the triangular layered magnet PdCrO2 the intralayer magnetic interactions are strong, however the lattice structure frustrates interlayer interactions. In spite of this, long-range, 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic order condenses at $T_N = 38$~K. We show here through neutron scattering measurements under in-plane uniaxial stress and in-plane magnetic field that this occurs through a spontaneous lifting of the three-fold rotational symmetry of the nonmagnetic lattice, which relieves the interlayer frustration. We also show through resistivity measurements that uniaxial stress can suppress ther…
Recent formal classifications of crystalline topological insulators predict that the combination of time-reversal and rotational symmetry gives rise to topological invariants beyond the ones known for other lattice symmetries. Although the classification proves their existence, it does not indicate a way of calculating the values of those invariants. Here, we show that a specific set of concentric Wilson loops and line invariants yields the values of all topological invariants in two-dimensional systems with pure rotation symmetry in class AII. Examples of this analysis are given for specific …
We investigate Cu-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with transport, magnetic susceptibility, and elastic neutron scattering measurements. In the heavily Cu-doped regime where long-range stripe-type antiferromagnetic order in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is suppressed, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (0.145 $\leq x \leq$ 0.553) samples exhibit spin-glass-like behavior in magnetic susceptibility and insulating-like temperature dependence in electrical transport. Using elastic neutron scattering, we find stripe-type short-range magnetic order in the spin-glass region identified by susceptibility measurements…
We study the effect of band anisotropy with discrete rotational symmetry $C_N$ (where $N\ge 2$) in the quantum Hall regime of two-dimensional electron systems. We focus on the composite Fermi liquid (CFL) at half filling of the lowest Landau level. We find that the magnitude of anisotropy transferred to the composite fermions decreases very rapidly with $N$. We demonstrate this by performing density matrix normalization group calculations on the CFL, and comparing the anisotropy of the composite fermion Fermi contour with that of the (non-interacting) electron Fermi contour at zero magnetic fi…
Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride (SmB6) has been intensely studied in recent years as a potential candidate of a strongly correlated topological insulator. One of the most exciting phenomena observed in SmB6 is the clear quantum oscillations appearing in magnetic torque at a low temperature despite the insulating behavior in resistance. These quantum oscillations show multiple frequencies and varied effective masses. The origin of quantum oscillation is, however, still under debate with evidence of both two-dimensional Fermi surfaces and three-dimensional Fermi surfaces. Here, we carry out …
We investigate the physics of quasicrystalline models in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, focusing on the presence and construction of topological states. This is done by using the Hofstadter model but with the sites and couplings denoted by the vertex model of the quasicrystal, giving the Hofstadter vertex model. We specifically consider two-dimensional quasicrystals made from tilings of two tiles with incommensurate areas, focusing on the five-fold Penrose and the eight-fold Ammann-Beenker tilings. This introduces two competing scales; the uniform magnetic field and the incommensura…
Matrix Models are the most effective way to describe strongly interacting systems with many degrees of freedom. They have proven successful in describing very different settings, from nuclei spectra to conduction in mesoscopic systems, from holographic models to various aspects of mathematical physics. This success reflects the existence of a large universality class for all these systems, signaled by the Wigner-Dyson statistics for the matrix eigenvalues. These models are defined in a base invariant way and this rotational symmetry has traditionally been read to imply that they describe exten…
How are the symmetries encoded in quasicrystals? As a compensation for the lack of translational symmetry, quasicrystals admit non-crystallographic symmetries such as 5- and 8-fold rotations in two-dimensional space. It is originated from the extended crystallography group of high-dimensional lattices and projection onto the physical space having a finite perpendicular window. One intriguing question is : How does the translation operation in high-dimension affect to the quasicrystals as a consequence of the projection? Here, we answer to this question and prove that a simple translation in fo…
We show that unconventional nematic superconductors with multi-component order parameter in lattices with three-fold and six-fold rotational symmetries support a charge-$4e$ vestigial superconducting phase above $T_c$. The charge-$4e$ state, which is a condensate of four-electron bound states that preserve the rotational symmetry of the lattice, is nearly degenerate with a competing vestigial nematic state, which is non-superconducting and breaks the rotational symmetry. This robust result is the consequence of a hidden discrete symmetry in the Ginzburg-Landau theory, which permutes quantities…
