The state of cold quark matter really challenges both astrophysicists and particle physicists, even many-body physicists. It is conventionally suggested that BCS-like color superconductivity occurs in cold quark matter; however, other scenarios with a ground state rather than of Fermi gas could still be possible. It is addressed that quarks are dressed and clustering in cold quark matter at realistic baryon densities of compact stars, since a weakly coupling treatment of the interaction between constituent quarks would not be reliable. Cold quark matter is conjectured to be in a solid state if thermal kinematic energy is much lower than the interaction energy of quark clusters, and such a state could be relevant to different manifestations of pulsar-like compact stars.
Heavy-quark effects on the equation of state for cold and dense quark matter are obtained from perturbative QCD, yielding observables parametrized only by the renormalization scale. In particular, we investigate the thermodynamics of charm quark matter under the constraints of $β$ equilibrium and electric charge neutrality in a region of densities where perturbative QCD is, in principle, much more reliable. Finally, we analyze the stability of charm stars, a possible new branch of ultradense, self-bound compact stars, and find that they are unstable under radial oscillations.
In this paper we are trying to solve the problem of the origin of strong magnetic fields in the framework of solid quark-cluster stars. We propose that, under the Coulomb repulsion, the electrons inside the stars could spontaneously magnetized and become ferromagnetic, and hence would contribute non-zero net magnetic momentum to the whole star. The leading order approximation in our simple model shows that the magnetism of solid quark-cluster matter could be possible. For most cases in solid quark-cluster stars, the amount of net magnetic momentum, could be significant, and the net magnetic mo…
A simple mixed phase model mimicking so-called "pasta" phases in the quark-hadron phase transition is developed and applied to static neutron stars for the case of DD2 type hadonic and NJL type quark matter models. The influence of the mixed phase on the mass-radius relation of the compact stars is investigated. Model parameters are chosen such that the results are in agreement with the observational constraints for masses and radii of pulsars.
We study the effects of heavy quarks on the equation of state for cold and dense quark matter obtained from perturbative QCD, yielding observables parametrized only by the renormalization scale. We investigate the thermodynamics of charm quark matter under the constraints of $β$ equilibrium and electric charge neutrality in a region of densities where perturbative QCD is, in principle, much more reliable. We also analyze the stability of charm stars, which might be realized as a new branch of ultradense hybrid compact stars, and find that such quark stars are unstable under radial oscillations…
TThe glitch of anomalous X-ray pulsars \& soft gamma repeaters (AXP/SGRs) usually accompanied with detectable energy releases manifesting as X-ray bursts or outbursts, while the glitch of some pulsars like Vela release negligible energy. We find that these two types of glitches can naturally correspond to two types of starquake of solid strange stars. By applying the EoS of quark cluster star and some realistic pulsar parameters, we can reproduce consistent results compared with previous constraints and observations.
Neutron star due to their high interior matter density are expected to be composed of a quark core, a mixed quark-hadron matter, and a layer of hadronic matter. Thus, in this paper, we compute the equation of state of these parts of neutron star to evaluate its structure properties. We use two models for describing EOS of quark matter, NJL and MIT bag models, and employ three approaches in this work. A density dependent bag constant satisfy the quark confinement in the simple MIT bag model. We also study the interaction behavior of quarks, firstly one gluon exchange within MIT bag model and th…
We have studied the spin-down induced phase transition in cold, isolated neutron stars in this work. After birth, as the star slows down, its central density rises and crosses the critical density of phase transition, and a quark core is seeded inside the star. Intermediate mass stars are more likely to have a quark seeding in their lifetime at birth. Smaller neutron stars do not have a quark core and remain neutron stars throughout their life, whereas in massive stars, a quark core exists at their center from birth. In intermediate and massive stars, the quark core grows further as the star s…
We discuss the Hard Dense Loop resummation at finite quark mass and evaluate the equation of state (EoS) of cold and dense QCD matter in $β$ equilibrium. The resummation in the quark sector has an effect of lowering the baryon number density and the EoS turns out to have much smaller uncertainty than the perturbative QCD estimate. Our numerical results favor smooth matching between the EoS from the resummed QCD calculation at high density and the extrapolated EoS from the nuclear matter density region. We also point out that the speed of sound in our EoS slightly exceeds the conformal limit.
We investigate protoneutron star matter using the state-of-the-art perturbative equation of state for cold and dense QCD in the presence of a fixed lepton fraction in which both electrons and neutrinos are included. Besides computing the modifications in the equation of state due to the presence of trapped neutrinos, we show that stable strange quark matter has a more restricted parameter space. We also study the possibility of nucleation of unpaired quark matter in the core of protoneutron stars by matching the lepton-rich QCD pressure onto a hadronic equation of state, namely TM1 with trappe…
We study the tidal deformability of bare quark stars and hybrid compact stars composed of a quark matter core in general relativity, assuming that the deconfined quark matter exists in a crystalline color superconducting phase. We find that taking the elastic property of crystalline quark matter into account in the calculation of the tidal deformability can break the universal I-Love relation discovered for fluid compact stars, which connects the moment of inertia and tidal deformability. Our result suggests that measurements of the moment of inertia and tidal deformability can in principle be…
The outer crust properties of cold non-accreting neutron stars are studied within the framework of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which includes the effects of modifications of the quark structure inside individual nucleons when they are within a high-density nuclear medium. With a unique set of five well-constrained adjustable parameters, which have a clear physical basis, the QMC model gives predictions for the ground state observables of even-even nuclei which agree with experiment as well as traditional models. Furthermore, it gives improved theoretical values for nuclei thought to …
This article studies the maximum mass limit of the quark star formed after the shock-induced phase transition of a cold neutron star. By employing hadronic and quark equation of state that satisfies the current mass bound, we use combustion adiabat conditions to find such a limit. The combustion adiabat condition results in a local or a global maximum pressure at an intermediate density range. The maximum pressure corresponds to a local or global maximum mass for the phase transformed hybrid star. The phase transition is usually exothermic if we have a local maximum mass. The criteria for exot…
The properties of dense QCD matter are delineated through the construction of equations of state which should be consistent with QCD calculations in the low and high density limits, nuclear laboratory experiments, and the neutron star observations. These constraints, together with the causality condition of the sound velocity, are used to develop the picture of hadron-quark continuity in which hadronic matter continuously transforms into quark matter (modulo small 1st order phase transitions). For hadronic matter (at baryon density nB > ~2n0 with n0 ~ 0.16 fm^(-3) being the nuclear saturation …
