We discuss the production of charmonium in nuclear collisions within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. We demonstrate that the model reproduces very well the availble data at RHIC. We provide predictions for the LHC energy where, dependently on the charm production cross section, a dramatically different behaviour of charmonium production as a function of centrality might be expected. We discuss also the case in elementary collisions, where clearly the statistical model does not reproduce the measurements.
The most recent data from the CERN LHC are compared with calculations within the statistical hadronization model. The parameters temperature und baryon chemical potential are fitted to the data. The best fit yields a temperature of 156 MeV, slightly below the expectation from RHIC data. Proton yields are nearly three standard deviations below this fit and possible reasons are discussed.
We study the production of charmonia and charmed hadrons for nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. Results from this model are compared to the observed centrality dependence of J/psi production at SPS energy. We further provide predictions for the centrality dependence of the production of open and hidden charm mesons at RHIC and LHC.

We extend our predictions for charm production towards the threshold energies, where charm is expected to be measured at the future FAIR facility.
Predictions are presented within the framework of the statistical hadronization model for integrated yields of bottomonia in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. We investigate the centrality dependence of $Υ$ production and provide predictions for a large set of still-unmeasured open-beauty hadrons.
We address the principles governing QGP hadronization and particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We argue that chemical non-equilibrium is required and show that once this condition is assumed a very good description of hadron production in collider RHIC and at LHC heavy ion experiments follows. We present results of our analysis as a function of centrality. Comparing most extreme experimental conditions we show that only the reaction volume and degree of strangeness phase space saturation change. We determine the universal QGP fireball hadronization conditions.
We study the production of charmonia and charmed hadrons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. Results from this model are compared to the measured yields and centrality dependence of J/psi production at SPS and RHIC energies. We explore and contrast the centrality dependence of the production of mesons with open and hidden charm at SPS, RHIC, and LHC. The sensitivity of the results to various input parameters is analyzed in detail for RHIC energy.
We study the mechanism and probability of in-medium hadronization in the deconfined medium produced in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We show the likelihood of color-neutral objects to be formed inside the partonic fireball and the probability of these states to escape the medium with reduced interaction strength and energy loss. We will suggest specific measurements that are sensitive to the early degrees of freedom and show predictions for these measurements at RHIC and the LHC
We obtain a detailed description of all available hadron multiplicity yields in central Pb--Pb collisions at LHC measured in the rapidity interval $|y|<0.5$. We find that the hadronization of the fireball at LHC occurs at nearly identical intensive physical bulk conditions for all centralities similar to those seen already at RHIC.
We study the relevance of experimental data on heavy-flavor [$D^0$, $J/ψ$, $B\rightarrow J/ψ$ and $Υ(1S)$ mesons] production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC to improve our knowledge of the gluon-momentum distribution inside heavy nuclei. We observe that the nuclear effects encoded in both most recent global fits of nuclear parton densities at next-to-leading order (nCTEQ15 and EPPS16) provide a good overall description of the LHC data. We interpret this as a hint that these are the dominant ones. In turn, we perform a Bayesian-reweighting analysis for each particle data sample which shows…
The observation of long range ridge-like structure in the near-side region of the two particle $Δη-Δϕ$ correlations as measured by LHC experiments in high multiplicity p$-$p collisions indicated towards the presence of collective effects which are similar to that observed in p$-$A(nucleon-nucleus) and A$-$A (nucleus-nucleus) collisions. The two particle correlation between the charged particles in $Δη-Δϕ$ for p$-$p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV and 13 TeV is studied using Pythia 8 event generator within the framework of final-state partonic color reconnection effects as well as the microsco…
We present new results on the statistical hadronization of heavy quarks at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies. Several new aspects are considered, among them a separation of the collision geometry into a ``core'' and a ``corona'' part and an estimate of the annihilation rate of charm quark in a hot plasma, together with a critical assessment of its influence on the results. For RHIC energies we investigate the centrality dependence of J/psi production focusing on the model results for different values of the charm production cross section, including its theoretical and experimental uncertainty. We als…
We show that all central rapidity hadron yields measured in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV are well described by the chemical non-equilibrium statistical hadronization model (SHM), where the chemically equilibrated QGP source breaks up directly into hadrons. SHM parameters are obtained as a function of centrality of colliding ions, and we compare CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with Brookhaven National Laboratory Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) results. We predict yields of unobserved hadrons and address anti-matter production. The physical properties of the quark--gluon…
In central Pb-Pb collisions at LHC the multiplicity of particles produced is so high that it should become feasible to examine the nature of transition from the deconfined quark-gluon state to the confined hadron state by methods that rely on the availability of high multiplicity events. We consider four classes of the transition process ranging from critical behavior to totally random behavior, depending on whether or not there is clustering of quarks and on whether or not there is contraction of dense clusters due to confinement. Fluctuations of bin multiplicities in each event are quantifie…
This thesis discusses the phenomenological parton recombination approach to describe hadronization in heavy ion collisions. The very good agreement to RHIC data for the flow coefficients v_2 and v_4 is shown and extrapolations are used to make predictions for the LHC.
Calculations and predictions are presented within the framework of the statistical hadronization model for transverse momentum spectra of the charmonium states J/$ψ$, $ψ(2S)$ and $X(3872)$ produced in nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies. The results are confronted with available data and exhibit very good agreement by using particle flow profiles from state-of-the-art hydrodynamic calculations. For $X(3872)$ production in Pb-Pb collisions we predict a transverse momentum distribution similar in shape to that for J/$ψ$ with a strong enhancement at low transverse momenta and a production …
Azimuthally-sensitive femtoscopy for heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC is explored within the approach consisting of the hydrodynamics of perfect fluid followed by statistical hadronization. It is found that for the RHIC initial conditions the very same framework that reproduces the standard soft observables (including the transverse-momentum spectra, the elliptic flow, and the azimuthally-averaged HBT radii) leads to a proper description of the azimuthally-sensitive femtoscopic observables - we find that the azimuthal variation of the side and out HBT radii is very well reproduced for all …
We study the multiplicity fluctuation and correlation of identified mesons and baryons formed at the hadronization by the quark combination mechanism in the context of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Based on the statistical method of free quark combination, we derive the two-hadron multiplicity correlations such as meson-meson and meson-baryon correlations, and take the effects of quark number fluctuation at hadronization into account by a Taylor expansion method. After including the decay contributions, we calculate the dynamical fluctuation observable $ν_{dyn}$ for $\text{K}π$, $pπ…
We consider the chemical freeze-out of $Ξ$, $\overlineΞ$ and $ϕ$ multistrange hadrons within a Statistical Hadronization Model inspired approach. We study particle yields across a wide range of reaction energy and centrality from NA49 at SPS and STAR at RHIC experiments. We constrain the physical conditions present in the fireball source of strange hadrons, and anticipate results expected at LHC.
This dissertation presents a theoretical study of soft hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We explore the principles governing the hadronization of the expanding QGP fireball, and to understand its properties. Much of the ongoing effort is to demonstrate the validity of a QGP hadronization model which describes the particle production data accurately. We begin with a centrality study of multistrange hadrons from Au-Au collisions at 62.4 GeV at RHIC. We show that the statistical hadronization model (SHM) well describes particle production in QGP hadronization. For all centra…
We study multistrange hadrons produced in NA49 and STAR experiments at center of mass energies varying from \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.61 GeV to 200 GeV. We show that the yields of Ξ, Ξ-bar and ϕ can help to constrain the physical conditions present in the hot dense fireball source of these multistrange hadrons created in heavy ion collision. We address the question of chemical equilibrium of individual quark flavors before and after hadronization and offer a few predictions for LHC.
The relativistic hydrodynamics together with the single-freeze-out statistical hadronization model is used to describe the midrapidity hadron production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. At the highest RHIC energy our approach gives a quite satisfactory global description of soft hadronic observables including the HBT radii. With the increased initial energy, from RHIC to LHC, we expect the saturation of the pion elliptic flow and the moderate increase of the correlation radii.
We review the statistical hadronization picture for charmonium production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions. Our starting point is a brief reminder of the status of the thermal model description of hadron production at high energy. Within this framework an excellent account is achieved of all data for hadrons built of (u,d,s) valence quarks using temperature, baryo-chemical potential and volume as thermal parameters. The large charm quark mass brings in a new (non-thermal) scale which is explicitely taken into account by fixing the total number of charm quarks produced in the collision.…
In the string melting version of a multiphase transport model, the hadronization algorithm has been improved by favoring parton combinations close in not only coordinate space but also momentum space. Formation probabilities of mesons, baryons, and antibaryons during hadronization are determined by their corresponding Wigner functions for the valence parton combinations with no free parameters, and the net baryon, electric, and strangeness charges are conserved during quark coalescence. Effects of the hadronization on anisotropic flows, collision energy dependence of the proton directed flow, …
Quark coalescence models have been applied successfully to reproduce measured hadron production data in relativistic heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies, which finding strongly supports the formation of deconfined quark matter in these collisions. The investigation of meson and baryon production is an ideal tool to understand dynamical details of hadronization, especially strange hadron numbers and ratios. We display latest results on the production of strange particles in quark coalescence processes in heavy ion collisions at different collider energies.
We study heavy flavor evolution and hadronization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The in-medium evolution of heavy quarks is described using our modified Langevin framework that incorporates both collisional and radiative energy loss mechanisms. The subsequent hadronization process for heavy quarks is calculated with a fragmentation plus recombination model. We find significant contribution from gluon radiation to heavy quark energy loss at high $p_T$; the recombination mechanism can greatly enhance D meson production at medium $p_T$. Our calculation provides a good description of D meso…
We present novel rope hadronization results for strange hadron enhancement in pp, pPb, and PbPb collisions using PYTHIA/Angantyr at LHC energies. With the rope model for string fragmentation, we find that the strangeness and baryon enhancement has a coherent increase across all collision systems as a function of average charged central multiplicity, in qualitative agreement with LHC data. In AA collisions, we find that the baryonic yields overshoot data at high multiplicities, and we discuss how a combination of rope hadronization with other string interactions may tame this rise.
We present a detailed phenomenological analysis of single-inclusive hadron production at the CERN-LHC in both proton-proton and proton-lead collisions. First data from the LHC experiments on charged hadron spectra are compared to next-to-leading order QCD expectations, and predictions are made for identified pion, kaon, and proton distributions differential in transverse momentum and rapidity for LHC energies from 900 GeV to 14 TeV. The results are obtained with the latest sets of vacuum fragmentation functions based on global QCD analyses, and recently proposed medium modified fragmentation f…
A hadronic rescattering model with the proper hadronization time width as the free parameter is compared with charged pion and charged and neutral kaon femtoscopy measurements from the LHC ALICE experiment for sqrt{s}=7 TeV proton-proton collisions. Comparisons between the model and measurements are made for one-dimensional source parameters in several charged multiplicity and transverse particle pair momentum bins. It is found that a reasonable description of the measured source parameters by the model is obtained for a hadronization proper time width of 0.4 +- 0.1 fm/c, which is in agreement…

The integrated HydroKinetic Model (iHKM) is applied to analyse the results of direct photon spectra as well as elliptic and triangular flow measurements in 200A GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC for different centrality bins. Experiments detect the strong centrality dependence of photon elliptic and triangular flow as increasing $v_n(p_T)$-coefficients towards peripheral collisions. The photon production in the model is accumulated from the different sources along with the process of relativistic heavy ion collision developing. Those include the primary hard photons from the parton collisions at th…
We investigate photon emission at the hadronization stage from a quark-gluon plasma created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A recombination-model picture suggests that a quark and an antiquark bind into a meson state in hadronization, which would apparently violate the energy conservation if there is nothing else involved. We consider here a hadronization process where the recombination accompanies a photon emission. This is an analog of the "{\it radiative recombination}" known in plasma physics, such as $e^- + p^+ \to {\rm H}^0 +γ$, which occurs when an electromagnetic plasma goes back…
Since the early eighties, we have shared with Leon Van Hove the following view. That if a QGP were produced in high energy heavy ion colliders, that its hadronization products would likely come from small localized in phase space bubbles of plasma. We develop a model based on HIJING, to which we added a ring of adjoining multiple bubbles in the central rapidity region. Our simulations were designed to be tested by the forthcoming RHIC STAR detector data for 65 GeV/n Au colliding with 65 GeV/n Au. We took into account background and resonance effects to allow a direct comparison with the data. …
We study the particle production in the early stage of the ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. To this end the Boltzmann kinetic equations for gluons and pions with elastic rescattering are considered together with a simple model for the parton-hadron conversion process (hadronisation). It is shown that the overpopulation of the gluon phase space in the initial state leads to an intermediate stage of Bose enhancement in the low-momentum gluon sector which due to the gluon-pion conversion process is then reflected in the final distribution function of pions. This pattern is very similar to …
We have studied the hadronization of jet parton showers based on the quark recombination model. This is achieved by letting gluons at the end of the perturbative shower evolution undergo a non-perturbative splitting into quark and antiquark pairs, then applying a Monte-Carlo version of instantaneous quark recombination, and finally subjecting remnant quarks (those which have not found a recombination partner) to Lund string fragmentation. When applied to parton showers from the PYTHIA Monte Carlo generator, the final hadron spectra from our calculation compare quite well to PYTHIA jets that ha…
Heavy-ion collisions at the LHC provide the conditions to investigate regions of quark-gluon plasma that reach higher temperatures and that persist for longer periods of time compared to collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. This extended duration allows correlations from charge conservation to better separate during the quark-gluon plasma phase, and thus be better distinguished from correlations that develop during the hadron phase or during hadronization. In this study charge balance functions binned by relative rapidity and azimuthal angle and indexed by species are considered.…
We investigate the production of hadrons in nuclear collisions within the framework of the thermal (or statistical hadronization) model. We discuss both the ligh-quark hadrons as well as charmonium and provide predictions for the LHC energy. Even as its exact magnitude is dependent on the charm production cross section, not yet measured in Pb-Pb collisions, we can confidently predict that at the LHC the nuclear modification factor of charmonium as a function of centrality is larger than that observed at RHIC and compare the experimental results to these predictions.
We review the signatures for the soft collective dynamics in highest-multiplicity ultrarelativistic p-Pb collisions and show that the effects are well described in a three-stage model, consisting of the event-by-event Glauber initial conditions, viscous 3+1D hydrodynamics, and statistical hadronization. In particular, we discuss the ridges in two-particle correlations in the relative azimuth and pseudorapidity, the elliptic and triangular flow coefficients, and the mass hierarchy of observables sensitive to flow.
We present additions to the MARTINI event generator for examining heavy quarks and quarkonia in heavy-ion collisions. All stages of a heavy-ion collision affect the observables associated with heavy quarks: the initial phase space of the heavy quarks are sampled with PYTHIA8.1, the heavy quarks are evolved using Langevin dynamics and a 3+1-dimensional hydrodynamical description of the heavy-ion collision, and are fragmented and hadronized using a modified version of the color evaporation model that takes into account non-trivial evolution in position space, as well as the possibility of recomb…
We briefly review the predictions of the thermal model for hadron production in comparison to latest data from RHIC and extrapolate the calculations to LHC energy. Our main emphasis is to confront the model predictions with the recently released data from ALICE at the LHC. This comparison reveals an apparent anomaly for protons and anti-protons which we discuss briefly. We also demonstrate that our statistical hadronization predictions for J/$ψ$ production agree very well with the most recent LHC data, lending support to the picture in which there is complete charmonium melting in the quark-gl…
We study the dynamics of energy loss and flow of heavy quarks produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the framework of a Langevin equation coupled to a (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model that simulates the space-time evolution of the produced hot and dense QCD matter. The classical Langevin approach is improved such that, apart from quasi-elastic scatterings, radiative energy loss is incorporated by treating gluon radiation as an additional force term. The hadronization of emitted heavy quarks is simulated via a hybrid fragmentation plus recombination model. Our ca…
Boost-invariant hadron production in high energy collisions occurs in causally disconnected regions of finite space-time size. As a result, globally conserved quantum numbers (charge, strangeness, baryon number) are conserved locally in spatially restricted correlation clusters. Their size is determined by two time scales: the equilibration time specifying the formation of a quark-gluon plasma, and the hadronization time, specifying the onset of confinement. The expected values for these scales provide the theoretical basis for the suppression observed for strangeness production in elementary …
Heavy flavor measurements in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at collider energies enable unique insights into their production and hadronization mechanism because experimental and theoretical uncertainties cancel in ratios of their cross-sections relative to minimum bias events. We explore such event engineering using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory to compute short distance charmonium cross-sections. The CGC is combined with heavy-quark fragmentation functions to compute $D$-meson cross-sections; for the $J/ψ$, hadronization is described e…
We compile experimental data for the averaged transverse momentum ($\left\langle p_{T}\right\rangle $) of proton, $Λ$, $Ξ^{-}$, $Ω^{-}$ and $ϕ$ at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 200, 39, 27, 19.6, 11.5, 7.7 GeV and in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV, and find that experimental data of these hadrons exhibit systematic correlations. We apply a quark combination model with equal-velocity combination approximation to derive analytic formulas of hadronic $\left\langle p_{T}\right\rangle $ in the case of exponential form of quark $p_{T}$ spectra at hadronization. …
Hydrodynamics merged with single-freeze-out statistical hadronization is used to describe the midrapidity hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the highest RHIC energies and to make predictions for the LHC. Thermodynamic properties of the quark-gluon plasma are taken from lattice simulations, at low temperatures the hadron-gas equation of state is used, while in the cross-over region an interpolation between the two equations of state is constructed. The initial condition for hydrodynamics is obtained from a Glauber profile for the entropy, with the initial central temperat…
In relativistic nuclear collisions the production of hadrons with light (u,d,s) quarks is quantitatively described in the framework of the Statistical Hadronization Model (SHM). Charm quarks are dominantly produced in initial hard collisions but interact strongly in the hot fireball and thermalize. Therefore charmed hadrons can be incorporated into the SHM by treating charm quarks as 'impurities' with thermal distributions, while the total charm content of the fireball is fixed by the measured open charm cross section. We call this model SHMc and demonstrate that with SHMc the measured multipl…
We study chemical equilibration of quarks and gluons in central nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The initial quark and gluon densities are taken from earlier studies as well as from recent perturbative QCD estimates and are then evolved via rate equations coupled to longitudinally boost-invariant fluid dynamics. We find that, for RHIC initial conditions, the lifetime of quark-gluon matter is too short in order for the quark and gluon number densities to chemically equilibrate prior to hadronization. In contrast, at LHC energies chemical equilibration is complete before the system h…
We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS and LHC energies. Employing the UrQMD hybrid transport model we study the effects of the final hadron/resonance expansion phase on the hadron multiplicities established at hadronization. The bulk meson yields freeze out directly at hadronization whereas the baryon-antibaryon sector is subject to significant alterations, due to annihilation and regeneration processes. We quantify the latter changes by survival factors for each species which are applied to modify the statistical model predictions for the data. The modifi…
We present a relativistic molecular dynamics approach based on the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian. We derive the relativistic time evolution equations for an expanding plasma, discuss the hadronization cross section and how they act in such a scenario. We present in detail how one can transform the time evolution equation to a simulation program and apply this program to study the expansion of a plasma created in experiments at RHIC and LHC. We present first results on the centrality dependence of $v_2$ and of the transverse momentum spectra of pions and kaons and discuss in detail the hadroni…
We construct a theoretical framework to describe the evolution of heavy flavors produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The in-medium energy loss of heavy quarks is described using our modified Langevin equation that incorporates both quasi-elastic scatterings and the medium-induced gluon radiation. The space-time profiles of the fireball is described by a (2+1)-dimensional hydrodynamics simulation. A hybrid model of fragmentation and coalescence is utilized for heavy quark hadronization, after which the produced heavy mesons together with the soft hadrons produced from the bulk QGP are…
We present predictions for the nuclear modification factor and elliptic flow of D and B mesons, as well as of their decay electrons, in semicentral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. Heavy quarks are propagated in a Quark-Gluon Plasma using a relativistic Langevin simulation with drag and diffusion coefficients from elastic interactions with light anti-/quarks and gluons, including non-perturbative resonance scattering. Hadronization at T_c is performed within a combined coalescence-fragmentation scheme.
The drag and diffusion coefficients of heavy baryons ($Λ_c$ and $Λ_b$) in the hadronic phase created in the latter stage of the heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies have been evaluated recently. In this work we compute some experimental observables, such as the nuclear suppression factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of heavy baryons at RHIC and LHC energies, highlighting the role of the hadronic phase contribution to these observables, which are going to be measured at Run 3 of LHC. For the time evolution of the heavy quarks in the QGP and heavy baryons in the hadronic phase w…
We calculate the heavy quark evolution in heavy ion collisions and show results for the elliptic flow $v_2$ as well as the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ at RHIC and LHC energies. For the calculation we implement a Langevin approach for the transport of heavy quarks in the UrQMD (hydrodynamics + Boltzmann) hybrid model. As drag and diffusion coefficients we use a Resonance approach for elastic heavy-quark scattering and assume a decoupling temperature of the charm quarks from the hot medium of $130\,\text{MeV}$. At RHIC energies we use a coalescence approach at the decoupling temperature…
