Vortices in two-dimensional superconductors with broken time-reversal and spin-rotation symmetry can bind states at zero excitation energy. These socalled Majorana bound states transform a thermal insulator into a thermal metal and may be used to encode topologically protected qubits. We identify an alternative mechanism for the formation of Majorana bound states, akin to the way in which Shockley states are formed on metal surfaces: An atomic-scale electrostatic line defect can have a pair of Majorana bound states at the end points. The Shockley mechanism explains the appearance of a thermal metal in vortex-free lattice models of chiral p-wave superconductors and (unlike the vortex mechanism) is also operative in the topologically trivial phase.
One of the promising platforms for creating Majorana bound states is a hybrid nanostructure consisting of a semiconducting nanowire covered by a superconductor. We analyze the previously disregarded role of electrostatic interaction in these devices. Our main result is that Coulomb interaction causes the chemical potential to respond to an applied magnetic field, while spin-orbit interaction and screening by the superconducting lead suppress this response. Consequently, the electrostatic environment influences two properties of Majorana devices: the shape of the topological phase boundary and …

Exploiting the peculiar properties of proximity-induced superconductivity on the surface of a topological insulator, we propose a device which allows the creation of a Majorana fermion inside the core of a pinned Abrikosov vortex. The relevant Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations are studied analytically. We demonstrate that in this system the zero-energy Majorana fermion state is separated by a large energy gap, of the order of the zero-temperature superconducting gap $Δ$, from a band of single-particle non-topological excitations. In other words, the Majorana fermion remains robust against thermal…
The chiral edge modes of a topological superconductor support two types of excitations: fermionic quasiparticles known as Majorana fermions and $π$-phase domain walls known as edge vortices. Edge vortices are injected pairwise into counter-propagating edge modes by a flux bias or voltage bias applied to a Josephson junction. An unpaired edge mode carries zero electrical current on average, but there are time-dependent current fluctuations. We calculate the shot noise power produced by a sequence of edge vortices and find that it increases logarithmically with their spacing - even if the spacin…
We propose to use the recently predicted two-dimensional `weak-pairing' $p_x + ip_y$ superfluid state of fermionic cold atoms as a platform for topological quantum computation. In the core of a vortex, this state supports a zero-energy Majorana mode, which moves to finite energy in the corresponding topologically trivial `strong-pairing' state. By braiding vortices in the `weak-pairing' state, unitary quantum gates can be applied to the Hilbert space of Majorana zero-modes. For read-out of the topological qubits, we propose realistic schemes suitable for atomic superfluids.
In recent years there has been an intensive search for Majorana fermion states in condensed matter systems. Predicted to be localized on cores of vortices in certain non-conventional superconductors, their presence is known to render the exchange statistics of bulk vortices non-Abelian. Here we study the equations governing the dynamics of phase solitons (fluxons) in a long Josephson junction in a topological superconductor. We show that the fluxon will bind a localized zero energy Majorana mode and will consequently behave as a non-Abelian anyon. The low mass of the fluxon, as well as its exp…
If superconductivity is induced in the metallic surface states of topological insulators via proximity, Majorana modes will be trapped on the vortex cores. The same effects hold for doped topological insulators which become bulk s-wave superconductors as long as the doping does not exceed a critical values $ μ^{\pm}_c.$ It is this critical chemical potential at which the material forgets it arose from a band-inverted topological insulator; it loses its topological \emph{imprint.} For the most common classes of topological insulators, which can be modeled with a minimal 4-band Dirac model the v…
The presence of Majorana zero-energy modes at vortex cores in a topological superconductor implies that each vortex carries an extra entropy $s_0$, given by $(k_{B}/2)\ln 2$, that is independent of temperature. By utilizing this special property of Majorana modes, the edges of a topological superconductor can be cooled (or heated) by the motion of the vortices across the edges. As vortices flow in the transverse direction with respect to an external imposed supercurrent, due to the Lorentz force, a thermoelectric effect analogous to the Ettingshausen effect is expected to occur between opposin…
We consider Majorana fermions tunneling among an array of vortices in a 2D chiral p-wave superconductor or equivalent material. The amplitude for Majorana fermions to tunnel between a pair of vortices is found to necessarily depend on the background superconducting phase profile; it is found to be proportional to the sine of half the difference between the phases at the two vortices. Using this result we study tight-binding models of Majorana fermions in vortices arranged in triangular or square lattices. In both cases we find that the aforementioned phase-tunneling relationship leads to the c…
A nonuniform in-plane Zeeman field can induce spontaneous supercurrents of spin-orbit coupled electrons in superconducting two-dimensional systems and thin films. In this work it is shown that current vortices can be created at the ends of a long homogeneously magnetized strip of a ferromagnetic insulator, which is deposited on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. The s-wave superconductivity on its surface is assumed to have an intrinsic origin, or to be induced by the proximity effect. It is shown that vortices with the odd vorticity can localize Majorana zero modes. The …
By solving the Bogoliubov--De Gennes equations analytically, we derive the fermionic zero-modes satisfying the Majorana property that exist in vortices of a two-dimensional $s$-wave Fermi superfluid with spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman spin-splitting. The Majorana zero-mode becomes normalisable and exponentially localised to the vicinity of the vortex core when the superfluid is topologically non-trivial. We calculate the energy splitting due to Majorana hybridisation and identify that the $s$-wave Majorana vortices obey non-Abelian statistics.
Zero--energy Majorana quasiparticles can be induced at the edge of a low dimensional systems. Non--Abelian statistics of this state makes it a good candidate for the realization of quantum computing. From the practical point of view, it is crucial to obtain an intentional creation and manipulation of this type of bound states. Here, we show such a possibility in a setup of quantum nanoring in which we specify a quantum dot region via electrostatic means. States in such quantum dot can lead to the emergence of Andreev and Majorana bound states in investigated system. We study the differences be…
Abrikosov vortices in Fe-based superconductors are a promising platform for hosting Majorana zero modes. Their adiabatic exchange is a key ingredient for Majorana-based quantum computing. However, the adiabatic braiding process can not be realized in state-of-the-art experiments. We propose to replace the infinitely slow, long-path braiding by only slightly moving vortices in a special geometry without actually physically exchanging the Majoranas, like a Majorana carousel. Although the resulting finite-time gate is not topologically protected, it is robust against variations in material specif…
By analytically solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations we study the fermion bound states at the center of the core of a vortex in a two-dimensional superconductor. We consider three kinds of 2D superconducting models: (a) a standard type II superconductor in the mixed state with low density of vortex lines, (b) a superconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling locking the spin parallel to the momentum and (c) a superconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling locking the spin perpendicular to the momentum. The 2D superconducting states are induced via proximity effect between an $s$-wave supe…
We present a theoretical analysis of a Majorana-based qubit consisting of two topological superconducting islands connected via a Josephson junction. The qubit is operated by electrostatic gates which control the coupling of two of the four Majorana zero modes. At the end of the operation, readout is performed in the charge basis. Even though the operations are not topologically protected, the proposed experiment can potentially shed light on the coherence of the parity degree of freedom in Majorana devices and serve as a first step towards topological Majorana qubits. We discuss in detail the…
Finding ways of creating, measuring and manipulating Majorana bound states (MBSs) in superconducting-semiconducting nanowires is a highly pursued goal in condensed matter physics. It was recently proposed that a periodic covering of the semiconducting nanowire with superconductor fingers would allow both gating and tuning the system into a topological phase while leaving room for a local detection of the MBS wavefunction. We perform a detailed, self-consistent numerical study of a three-dimensional (3D) model for a finite-length nanowire with a superconductor superlattice including the effect …
As part of the intense effort towards identifying platforms in which Majorana bound states can be realized and manipulated to perform qubit operations, we propose a topological Josephson junction architecture that achieves these capabilities and which can be experimentally implemented. The platform uses conventional superconducting electrodes deposited on a topological insulator film to form networks of proximity-coupled lateral Josephson junctions. Magnetic fields threading the network of junction barriers create Josephson vortices that host Majorana bound states localized in the junction whe…
We propose a mechanism for opening a full bulk energy gap and inducing vortex Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in nodal superconductors (SCs). We show that this becomes possible by coupling the nodal SC of interest to a magnetic texture crystal. The latter consists of superpositions of magnetic textures which repeat periodically in space according to suitable wave vectors that enable spin-flip scattering between all pairs of nodes of the SC, and thus open a full gap in its bulk energy spectrum. In this event, MZMs can be trapped in spin or shift vortices introduced in the magnetic texture crystal. O…
Motivated by recent experiments on FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$, we construct an explicit minimal model of an iron-based superconductor with band inversion at the $Z$ point and non-topological bulk $s_{\pm}$ pairing. While there has been considerable interest in Majorana zero modes localized at vortices in such systems, we find that our model - without any vortices - intrinsically supports 1D helical Majorana modes localized at the hinges between (001) and (100) or (010) surfaces, suggesting that this is a viable platform for observing "higher-order" topological superconductivity. We provide a general…

We discuss statistics of vortices having zero-energy non-Abelian Majorana fermions inside them. Considering the system of multiple non-Abelian vortices, we derive a non-Abelian statistics that differs from the previously derived non-Abelian statistics. The new non-Abelian statistics presented here is given by a tensor product of two different groups, namely the non-Abelian statistics obeyed by the Abelian Majorana fermions and the Coxeter group. The Coxeter group is a symmetric group related to the symmetry of polytopes in a high-dimensional space. As the simplest example, we consider the case…
We study the stability of nucleated topological phases that can emerge when interacting non-Abelian anyons form a regular array. The studies are carried out in the context of Kitaev's honeycomb model, where we consider three distinct types of perturbations in the presence of a lattice of Majorana mode binding vortices -- spatial anisotropy of the vortices, dimerization of the vortex lattice and local random disorder. While all the nucleated phases are stable with respect to weak perturbations of each kind, strong perturbations are found to result in very different behavior. Anisotropy of the v…
Using Ginzburg-Landau approach we show that the strain of the nematic superconductor can generate a specific (nematic) vorticity. In the case of doped topological insulators that vorticity forms a spin vortex. We find two types of topologically different spin vortices that either enhance (type I) or suppress (type II) superconductivity far from the vortex core. We apply Bogoliubov-de Geunnes equations to study electronic states in the nematic superconductor with spin vortices. We find that in the case of the vortex of type I, zero-energy states are localized near the vortex core. These states …
We study the generation of Majorana fermions in a two-dimensional topological superconductor placed in a transverse magnetic field B. A topological insulator/superconductor heterostructure and a two-dimensional p-wave superconductor are discussed. It is demonstrated that in these systems a single vortex creates two Majorana fermions, one hosted at the vortex core. The wave function of the second Majorana state is localized in the superconductor volume along a circle of radius $r^* \propto B^{-1}$ centered at the vortex core. In the case of many vortices, the sensitivity of $r^*$ to the magneti…
Two classes of topological superconductors and Majorana modes in condensed matter systems are known to date: one, in which impurity disorder strongly suppresses topological superconducting gap and is detrimental to Majorana modes, and the other, where Majorana fermions are protected by disorder-robust superconductor gap. In this work we predict a third class of topological superconductivity and Majorana modes, in which they appear exclusively in the presence of impurity disorder. Observation and control of Majorana fermions and other non-Abelions often requires a symmetry leading to a gap in a…
We investigate the properties of electron states localized at the edge of a superconducting island placed on the surface of a topological insulator in a magnetic field. In such systems, Majorana fermions emerge if an odd number of vortices (or odd multivortex vorticity) is hosted by the island; otherwise, no Majorana states exist. Majorana states emerge in pairs: one state is localized near the vortex core, and another at the island edge. We analyze in detail the robustness of Majorana fermions at the edge of the island threaded by a single vortex. If the system parameters are optimized, the e…
A highlighting feature of Majorana bound states in two-dimensional topological superconductors is that they gain a phase factor of $π$ upon being orbited by a vortex. This work focuses on the vortex degree of freedom itself and demonstrates that the change in the Majorana state is accompanied by a fermion parity change within the vortex. Such a parity flip is interpreted as a higher dimensional analog of the fermion parity pump mechanism in superconducting wires as well as through general topological arguments. It is demonstrated in terms of level crossings in three different situations - in i…
Majorana zero-modes in a superconductor are midgap states localized in the core of a vortex or bound to the end of a nanowire. They are anyons with non-Abelian braiding statistics, but when they are immobile one cannot demonstrate this by exchanging them in real space and indirect methods are needed. As a real-space alternative, we propose to use the chiral motion along the boundary of the superconductor to braid a mobile vortex in the edge channel with an immobile vortex in the bulk. The measurement scheme is fully electrical and deterministic: edge vortices ($π$-phase domain walls) are creat…
Spin-orbit interaction (SOI) plays a key role in creating Majorana zero modes in semiconductor nanowires proximity coupled to a superconductor. We track the evolution of the induced superconducting gap in InSb nanowires coupled to a NbTiN superconductor in a large range of magnetic field strengths and orientations. Based on realistic simulations of our devices, we reveal SOI with a strength of 0.15-0.35 eV$\require{mediawiki-texvc}Å$. Our approach identifies the direction of the spin-orbit field, which is strongly affected by the superconductor geometry and electrostatic gates.
Recent tunneling conductance measurements on semiconductor-superconductor nanowires find zero-bias peaks to be ubiquitous across wide ranges of chemical potential and Zeeman energy. Motivated by this, we demonstrate that topologically-trivial Andreev abound states (ABSs) pinned near zero energy are produced rather generically in inhomogeneous systems with multi-band occupancy in the presence of inter-band coupling. We first investigate the inter-band coupling mechanism responsible for the pinning within a multi-band 1D toy model, then we confirm the findings using a 3D Schrödinger-Poisson appr…
We consider a two-dimensional px+i py superconductor in the presence of multiple vortices, which support zero-energy Majorana fermion states in their cores. Intervortex tunnelings of the Majorana fermions lift the topological state degeneracy. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we calculate splitting of the zero-energy modes due to these tunneling events. We also discuss superconducting fluctuations and, in particular, their effect on the energy splitting.
We study the proximity effect between an s-wave superconductor and the surface states of a strong topological insulator. The resulting two dimensional state resembles a spinless p_x+ip_y superconductor, but does not break time reversal symmetry. This state supports Majorana bound states at vortices. We show that linear junctions between superconductors mediated by the topological insulator form a non chiral 1 dimensional wire for Majorana fermions, and that circuits formed from these junctions provide a method for creating, manipulating and fusing Majorana bound states.
Recent experimental efforts towards the detection of Majorana bound states have focused on creating the conditions for topological superconductivity. Here we demonstrate an alternative route, which achieves fully localised zero-energy Majorana bound states when a topologically trivial superconductor is strongly coupled to a helical normal region. Such a junction can be experimentally realised by e.g. proximitizing a finite section of a nanowire with spin-orbit coupling, and combining electrostatic depletion and a Zeeman field to drive the non-proximitized (normal) portion into a helical phase.…
We study the low-energy physics of a one-dimensional array of superconducting quantum dots realized by proximity coupling a semiconductor nanowire to multiple superconducting islands separated by narrow uncovered regions. The effective electrostatic potential inside the quantum dots and the uncovered regions can be controlled using potential gates. By performing detailed numerical calculations based on effective tightbinding models, we find that multiple low-energy sub-gap states consisting of partially overlapping Majorana bound states emerge generically in the vicinity of the uncovered regio…
The Majorana zero mode (MZM), which manifests as an exotic neutral excitation in superconductors, is the building block of topological quantum computing. It has recently been found in the vortices of several iron-based superconductors as a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in tunneling spectroscopy. In particular, a clean and robust MZM has been observed in the cores of free vortices in (Li0.84Fe0.16)OHFeSe. Here using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we demonstrate that Majorana-induced resonant Andreev reflection occurs between the STM tip and this zero-bias bound state, and consequent…
Excitation spectrum of a half-quantum vortex in a p-wave superconductor contains a zero-energy Majorana fermion. This results in a degeneracy of the ground state of the system of several vortices. From the properties of the solutions to Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations in the vortex core we derive the non-abelian statistics of vortices identical to that for the Moore-Read (Pfaffian) quantum Hall state.
Recent progress toward the fabrication of Majorana-based qubits has sparked the need for systematic approaches to optimize experimentally relevant parameters for the realization of robust Majorana bound states. Here, we introduce an efficient numerical method for the real-space optimization of tunable parameters, such as electrostatic potential profiles and magnetic field textures, in Majorana wires. Combining ideas from quantum control and quantum transport, our algorithm, applicable to any noninteracting tight-binding model, operates on a largely unexplored parameter space and opens new rout…
We analyze the topological superconductivity and investigate the spectroscopic properties manifested by the zero-energy modes, induced in a metallic strip embedded into a Josephson-type junction. Focusing on the Majorana polarization of such quasiparticles, we propose feasible means for its empirical detection, using the spin-selective Andreev reflection method. Our study reveals a gradual development of a transverse gradient of the Majorana polarization across the metallic strip upon increasing its width. We also inspect the spatial profile and polarization of the Majorana quasiparticles in t…
We characterize topological features of Josephson junctions formed by coupled mesoscopic chiral $p$-wave superconducting islands. Through analytic and numerical studies of the low-lying BdG (Bogoliubov-de Gennes) spectrum, we identify localized MBS (Majorana bound states) nucleated in Josephson vortices by the application of a perpendicular magnetic field. Additionally, we demonstrate the existence of an extended MBS that is delocalized around the outer perimeter of the coupled islands, which has measurable consequences on the Josephson supercurrent and phase dynamics of the junction. In parti…
We study the conditions for the existence of unpaired Majorana modes at the ends of vortex lines or the side edges of a layered topological superconductor. We show that the problem is mapped to that of a general Majorana chain and extend Kitaev's condition for the existence of its nontrivial phase by providing an additional condition when a supercurrent flows in the chain. Unpaired Majorana bound states may exist in a vortex line that threads the layers if the spin-orbit coupling has certain in-layer components but, interestingly, only if a nonzero supercurrent is maintained along the vortex. …
We describe experimental signatures of Majorana fermion edge states, which form at the interface between a superconductor and the surface of a topological insulator. If a lead couples to the Majorana fermions through electron tunneling, the Majorana fermions induce \textit{resonant} Andreev reflections from the lead to the grounded superconductor. The linear tunneling conductance is $0 $ ($2 e^2/h$) if there is an even (odd) number of vortices in the superconductor. Similar resonance occurs for tunneling into the zero mode in the vortex core. We also study the current and noise of a two-lead d…
We consider a setup consisting of two coupled sheets of bilayer graphene in the regime of strong spin-orbit interaction, where electrostatic confinement is used to create an array of effective quantum wires. We show that for suitable interwire couplings the system supports a topological insulator phase exhibiting Kramers partners of gapless helical edge states, while the additional presence of a small in-plane magnetic field and weak proximity-induced superconductivity leads to the emergence of zero-energy Majorana corner states at all four corners of a rectangular sample, indicating the trans…
This is a colloquium-style introduction to the midgap excitations in superconductors known as Majorana fermions. These elusive particles, equal to their own antiparticle, may or may not exist in Nature as elementary building blocks, but in condensed matter they can be constructed out of electron and hole excitations. What is needed is a superconductor to hide the charge difference, and a topological (Berry) phase to eliminate the energy difference from zero-point motion. A pair of widely separated Majorana fermions, bound to magnetic or electrostatic defects, has non-Abelian exchange statistic…
Topological insulator (TI) nanoribbons with proximity-induced superconductivity are a promising platform for Majorana bound states (MBSs). In this work, we consider a detailed modeling approach for a TI nanoribbon in contact with a superconductor via its top surface, which induces a superconducting gap in its surface-state spectrum. The system displays a rich phase diagram with different numbers of end-localized MBSs as a function of chemical potential and magnetic flux piercing the cross section of the ribbon. These MBSs can be robust or fragile upon consideration of electrostatic disorder. W…
Vortices in chiral topological superconductors are known for trapping Majorana zero modes as a signature response to their bulk-state topologies. In this work, we establish a similar bulk-vortex correspondence for two-dimensional $C_n$-protected class D higher-order topological superconductors, in which a quantum vortex will universally trap a pair of $C_n$-protected Majorana bound states with $\hat{z}$-directional angular momenta $J_z=0$ and $J_z=n/2$, respectively. This intriguing one-to-one mapping between anomalous vortex modes and higher-order topology can be systematically derived throug…
We consider a heterostructure of semiconductor layers sandwiched between two superconductors, forming a two-dimensional Josephson junction. Applying a Zeeman field perpendicular to the junction can render a topological superconducting phase with chiral Majorana edge mode. We show that the phase difference between two superconductors can efficiently reduce the magnetic field required to achieve the chiral topological superconductivity, providing an experimentally feasible setup to realize chiral Majorana edge modes. We also construct a lattice Hamiltonian of the setup to demonstrate the chiral …
We provide an argument based on flux insertion to show that certain superconductors with a non-trivial topological invariant have protected zero modes in their vortex cores. This argument has the flavor of a two dimensional index theorem and applies to disordered systems as well. It also provides a new way of understanding the zero modes in the vortex cores of a spinless $p_{x} + i p_{y}$ superconductor. Applying this approach to superconductors with and without time reversal and spin rotational symmetry, we predict the necessary and sufficient conditions for protected zero modes to exist in t…
We study the collective states of interacting non-Abelian anyons that emerge in Kitaev's honeycomb lattice model. Vortex-vortex interactions are shown to lead to the lifting of the topological degeneracy and the energy is discovered to exhibit oscillations that are consistent with Majorana fermions being localized at vortex cores. We show how to construct states corresponding to the fusion channel degrees of freedom and obtain the energy gaps characterizing the stability of the topological low energy spectrum. To study the collective behavior of many vortices, we introduce an effective lattice…
