We apply the recently developed triangular tessellation technique as presented in [J. de Graaf et al., Phys. Rev. E 80, 051405 (2009)] to calculate the free energy associated with the adsorption of anisotropic colloidal particles at a flat interface. From the free-energy landscape, we analyze the adsorption process, using a simplified version of Langevin dynamics. The present result is a first step to understand the time-dependent behavior of colloids near interfaces. This study shows a wide range of adsorption trajectories, where the emphasis lies on a strong dependence of the dynamics on the orientation of the colloid at initial contact with the interface. We believe that the observed orientational dependence in our simple model can be recovered in suitable experimental systems.
We consider a non-spherical colloidal particle immersed in a fluid close to its critical point. The temperature dependence of the corresponding order parameter profile is calculated explicitly. We perform a systematic expansion of the order parameter profile in powers of the local curvatures of the surface of the colloidal particle. This curvature expansion reduces to the short distance expansion of the order parameter profile in the case that the solvent is at the critical composition.
In thermal equilibrium, a colloidal particle between two parallel plates immersed in a fluid which partially wets both the particle and the plates, is attracted by the walls. However, if the particle moves parallel to the plates, a hydrodynamic lift force away from the plates arises in the limit of low Reynolds number. We study theoretically the competition of these two effects and identify the range of velocity in which the velocity may serve as a parameter controlling the adsorption in microflows.
The adsorption of polymer and surfactant molecules onto colloidal particles or droplets in solution can be characterized non-destructively by scattering techniques. In a first part, the general framework of Dynamic Light Scattering, Small Angle Neutron and X-ray Scattering for the determination of the structure of adsorbed layers, and namely of the density profile, is presented. We then review recent studies of layers of the model polymer poly(ethylene oxide), as homopolymer or part of a block copolymer. In this field, scattering with contrast variation has been shown to be a powerful tool to …
The adsorption of single colloidal microparticles (0.5--1 $μ$m radius) at a water-oil interface has been recently studied experimentally using digital holographic microscopy [Kaz \textit{et al., Nat. Mater.}, 2012, \textbf{11}, 138--142]. An initially fast adsorption dynamics driven by capillary forces is followed by an unexpectedly slow relaxation to equilibrium that is logarithmic in time and can span hours or days. The slow relaxation kinetics has been attributed to the presence of surface "defects" with nanoscale dimensions (1--5\,nm) that induce multiple metastable configurations of the c…
In a mixed suspension of rods and small polymer coils, the rods adsorb onto a hard wall in contact with the suspension. This adsorption is studied in the low density of rods limit. It is driven by depletion forces and is much stronger for long rods than for spheres. This is shown by means of exact, numerical, calculations and an approximate theory.
We examine the solvent-mediated interaction between two neutral colloidal particles due to preferential adsorption in a near-critical binary mixture. We take into account the renormalization effect due to the critical fluctuations using the recent local functional theory $[$J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 136}, 114704 (2012)$]$. We calculate the free energy and the force between two colloidal particles as functions of the temperature $T$, the composition far from the colloidal particles $c_\infty$, and the colloid separation $\ell$. The interaction is much enhanced when the component favored by the colloi…
The adsorption dynamics of a colloidal particle at a fluid interface is studied theoretically and numerically, documenting distinctly different relaxation regimes. The adsorption of a perfectly smooth particle is characterized by a fast exponential relaxation to thermodynamic equilibrium where the interfacial free energy has a minimum. The short relaxation time is given by the ratio of viscous damping to capillary forces. Physical and/or chemical heterogeneities in a colloidal system, however, can result in multiple minima of the free energy giving rise to metastability. In the presence of met…
Using fluorescence microscopy we study the adsorption of single latex microparticles at a water/water interface between demixing aqueous solutions of polymers, generally known as a water-in-water emulsion. Similar microparticles at the interface between molecular liquids have exhibited an extremely slow relaxation preventing the observation of expected equilibrium states. This phenomenon has been attributed to "long-lived" metastable states caused by significant energy barriers $Δ{\cal F}\sim γA_d\gg k_B T$ induced by high interfacial tension ($γ\sim 10^{-2}$ N/m) and nanoscale surface defects…
The study of competitive and cooperative adsorption of functionalized molecules such as polymers, rheology modifiers and surfactant molecules on colloidal particles immersed in a solvent is undertaken using coarse grained, dissipative particle dynamics simulations. The results show that a complex picture emerges from the simulations, one where dispersants and surfactants adsorb cooperatively up to certain concentrations, on colloidal particles, but as the surfactant concentration increases it leads to dispersant desorption. The presence of rheology modifying agents in the colloidal dispersion …
Colloidal particles are considered ideal building blocks to produce materials with enhanced physical properties. The state-of-the-art techniques for synthesizing these particles provide control over shape, size, and directionality of the interactions. In spite of these advances, there is still a huge gap between the synthesis of individual components and the management of their spontaneous organization towards the desired structures. The main challenge is the control over the dynamics of self-organization. In their kinetic route towards thermodynamically stable structures, colloidal particles …
In nanoparticle haloing, charged nanoparticles have been found to enhance the stability of colloidal suspensions by forming a non-adsorbing layer surrounding neutral colloids which induces an electrostatic repulsion between them. However, there has been some debate that nanoparticles may directly deposit onto the colloidal surfaces and that the stabilization mechanism relies on nanoparticle adsorption. In this study, we have found that these two mechanisms control the stability of colloidal suspensions across a continuum over increasing nanoparticle concentrations. AFM force measurements showe…
A systematic fieldtheoretic description of critical adsorption on curved objects such as spherical or rodlike colloidal particles immersed in a fluid near criticality is presented. The temperature dependence of the corresponding order parameter profiles and of the excess adsorption are calculated explicitly. Critical adsorption on elongated rods is substantially more pronounced than on spherical particles. It turns out that, within the context of critical phenomena in confined geometries, critical adsorption on a microscopically thin `needle' represents a distinct universality class of its own…
The performance of graphene oxide(GO)-based materials strongly depends on the lateral size and size distribution of GO nanosheets. Various methods are employed to prepare GO nanosheets with a narrow size distribution. One of the promising method was proposed recently by directionally freezing of a GO aqueous dispersion at a controlled growth rate of the freezing front. We develop a theoretic model of binary colloids suspension, incorporating both the moving freezing boundary and the preferential adsorption of colloidal particles to the ice phase. We numerically solve the coupled diffusion equa…
The effects of contact-line pinning are well-known in macroscopic systems, but are only just beginning to be explored at the microscale in colloidal suspensions. We use digital holography to capture the fast three-dimensional dynamics of micrometer-sized ellipsoids breaching an oil-water interface. We find that the particle angle varies approximately linearly with the height, in contrast to results from simulations based on minimization of the interfacial energy. Using a simple model of the motion of the contact line, we show that the observed coupling between translational and rotational degr…
It is important to understand mechanism of colloidal particles assembly near a substrate for developments of batteries, heterogeneous catalysts, paints, and cosmetics. Knowledge of the mechanism is also important for crystallizations of the colloidal particles and proteins. In this study, we calculated the physical adsorption of colloidal particles on a flat wall by using the integral equation theory, wherein small and large colloidal particles were employed. In the calculation system, electric double layer potentials were used as the pair potentials. In some cases, it was found from the calcu…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the motion of a closely fitting nanometer-size solid sphere in a fluid-filled cylindrical nanochannel at low Reynolds numbers and for a wide range of fluid-solid interactions corresponding to different wetting situations. For fluids that are not completely wetting we observe an interesting and novel adsorption phenomenon, in which the solid sphere, that was initially moving along the center of the tube, meanders across the channel and suddenly adsorbes onto the wall. Thereafter, the adsorbed sphere either {\it sticks} to the wall and remains motio…
We use a reactive Monte Carlo simulation method and primitive model of electrolyte to study acid-base equilibrium that controls charge regulation in colloidal systems. The simulations are performed in a semi-grand canonical ensemble in which colloidal suspension is in contact with a reservoir of salt and strong acid. The interior of colloidal particles is modeled as a low dielectric medium, different from the surrounding water. The effective colloidal charge is calculated for different number of surface acidic groups, pH, salt concentrations, and types of electrolyte. In the case of potassium …
In a recent Letter, Gurovitch and Sens studied the adsorption of a weakly charged polyelectrolyte chain onto an oppositely charged colloidal particle. By using a variational technique they found that the colloidal particle can adsorb a polymer of higher charge than its own, and thus be ``overcharged.'' I argue that the observed overcharging by a factor of 16/5 is indeed an artifact of the approximations involved in the study. Moreover, I show that the existence of overcharging depends crucially on the choice of the trial wave function, contrary to their claim.
We report a study of reversible adsorption of DNA-coated colloids on complementary functionalized oil droplets. We show that it is possible to control the surface coverage of oil droplets by colloidal particles, by exploiting the fact that during slow adsorption, compositional arrest takes place well before structural arrest occurs. As a consequence, we can prepare colloid-coated oil droplets with a `frozen' degree of loading, but with fully ergodic colloidal dynamics on the droplets. We illustrate the equilibrium nature of the adsorbed colloidal phase by exploring the quasi two-dimensional (2…
Due to the complex interplay between surface adsorption and hydrodynamic interactions, representative microscopic mechanisms of colloidal membrane fouling are still not well understood. Numerical simulations overcome experimental limitations such as the temporal and spatial resolution of microscopic events during colloidal membrane fouling: they help to gain deeper insight into fouling processes. This study uses coupled computational fluid dynamics - discrete element methods (CFD-DEM) simulations to examine mechanisms of colloidal fouling in a microfluidic architecture mimicking a porous micro…
We investigate bridging and aggregation of two colloidal particles in a near-critical binary mixture when the fluid far from the particles is outside the coexistence (CX) curve and is rich in the component disfavored by the colloid surfaces. In such situations, the adsorption-induced interaction is enhanced, leading to bridging and aggregation of the particles. We realize bridging firstly by changing the temperature with a fixed interparticle separation and secondly by letting the two particles aggregate. The interparticle attractive force dramatically increases upon bridging. The dynamics is …
The behavior of polyelectrolytes between charged surfaces immersed in semi-dilute solutions is investigated theoretically. A continuum mean field approach is used for calculating numerically concentration profiles between two electrodes held at a constant potential. A generalized contact theorem relates the inter-surface forces to the concentration profiles. The numerical results show that over-compensation of the surface charges by adsorbing polyelectrolytes can lead to effective attraction between equally charged surfaces. Simple scaling arguments enable us to characterize qualitatively the …
We introduce a new numerical technique, namely triangular tessellation, to calculate the free energy associated with the adsorption of a colloidal particle at a flat interface. The theory and numerical scheme presented here are sufficiently general to handle non-convex patchy colloids with arbitrary surface patterns characterized by a wetting angle, e.g., amphiphilicity. We ignore interfacial deformation due to capillary, electrostatic, or gravitational forces, but the method can be extended to take such effects into account. It is verified that the numerical method presented is accurate and s…
To explore charge regulation (CR) in physicochemical and biophysical systems, we present a model of colloidal particles with sticky adsorption sites which account for the formation of covalent bonds between the hydronium ions and the surface functional groups. Using this model and Monte Carlo simulations, we find that the standard Ninham and Parsegian (NP) theory of CR leads to results which deviate significantly from computer simulations. The problem of NP approach is traced back to the use of bulk equilibrium constant to account for surface chemical reactions. To resolve this difficulty we p…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of the phase behavior of a binary mixture of colloids with opposite adsorption preferences in a critical solvent. As a result of the attractive and repulsive critical Casimir forces, the critical fluctuations of the solvent lead to a further critical point in the colloidal system, i.e. to a critical colloidal-liquid--colloidal-liquid demixing phase transition which is controlled by the solvent temperature. Our experimental findings are in good agreement with calculations based on a simple approximation for the free energy of the system.
Polymer chains adsorbed onto oppositely charged spherical colloidal particles can significantly modify the particle-particle interactions. For sufficient amounts of added polymers, the original electrostatic repulsion can even turn into an effective attraction and relatively large kinetically stable aggregates can form which display several unexpected and interesting peculiarities and some intriguing biotechnological implications. The attractive interaction contribution between two oppositely particles arises from the correlated adsorption of polyions at the oppositely charged particle surface…
We present a new model of sequential adsorption in which the adsorbing particles experience dipolar interactions. We show that in the presence of these long-range interactions, highly ordered structures in the adsorbed layer may be induced at low temperatures. The new phenomenology manifests through significant variations of the pair correlation function and the jamming limit, with respect to the case of noninteracting particles. Our study could be relevant in understanding the adsorption of magnetic colloidal particles in presence of a magnetic field.
We investigate the behavior of a patchy particle model close to a hard-wall via Monte Carlo simulation and density functional theory (DFT). Two DFT approaches, based on the homogeneous and inhomogeneous versions of Wertheim's first order perturbation theory for the association free energy are used. We evaluate, by simulation and theory, the equilibrium bulk phase diagram of the fluid and analyze the surface properties for two isochores, one of which is close to the liquid side of the gas-liquid coexistence curve. We find that the density profile near the wall crosses over from a typical high-t…
Electrostatic repulsions can drive crystallization in many-particle systems. For charged colloidal systems, the phase boundaries as well as crystal structure are highly tunable by experimental parameters such as salt concentration and pH. By using projections of the colloid-ion mixture to a system of (soft) repulsive spheres and the one-component plasma (OCP), we study the hitherto unexplained experimentally observed reentrant melting of electrostatically repelling colloids upon increasing the colloid density. Our study shows that the surface chemistry should involve a competition between adso…
Previous experiments have shown that spherical colloidal particles relax to equilibrium slowly after they adsorb to a liquid-liquid interface, despite the large interfacial energy gradient driving the adsorption. The slow relaxation has been explained in terms of transient pinning and depinning of the contact line on the surface of the particles. However, the nature of the pinning sites has not been investigated in detail. We use digital holographic microscopy to track a variety of colloidal spheres---inorganic and organic, charge-stabilized and sterically stabilized, aqueous and non-aqueous--…
We consider a system of spherical colloidal particles with a size polydispersity and use a simple van der Waals description in order to study the combined effect of both the polydispersity and the spatial non-uniformity induced by a planar interface between a low-density fluid phase (enriched in small particles) and a high-density fluid phase (enriched in large particles). We find a strong adsorption of small particles at the interface, the latter being broadened with respect to the monodisperse case. We also find that the surface tension of the polydisperse system results from a competition b…
An extension of the Random Sequential Adsorption (RSA) model has been proposed recently, motivated by the coverage of oil droplets by DNA-functionalized colloidal particles. Particles arrive to a flat substrate with a uniform flux F but they can only adsorb on patches. Patches diffuse on the substrate with a diffusion coefficient D if they are free and they remain immobile when attached to an adsorbed particle. The adsorption is considered irreversible and particles cannot adsorb on top of each other. Thus, the system reaches a jammed state, consisting of a monolayer where no more particles ca…
We study suspensions of hydrophobic charged colloidal spheres dispersed in a demixed oil-water mixture by means of a modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory, taking into account image charge effects and partitioning of the monovalent ions. We find that the ion's aversion for oil can destroy the double layers of the oil-dispersed colloids. This affects the salt-concentration dependence of the colloidal adsorption to the oil-water interface qualitatively. The theory also predicts a narrow range of the oil-dielectric constant in which micron-sized water-in-oil droplets acquire enough charge to crystall…
The behavior of colloidal particles with a hard core and a soft shell has attracted the attention for researchers in the physical-chemistry interface not only due the large number of applications, but due the unique properties of these systems in bulk and at interfaces. The adsorption at the boundary of two phases can provide information about the molecular arrangement. In this way, we perform Langevin Dynamics simulations of polymer-grafted nanoparticles. We employed a recently obtained core-softened potential to analyze the relation between adsorption, structure and dynamic properties of the…
Hypothesis: A broad range of phenomena, such as emulsification and emulsion stability, foam formation or liquid evaporation, are closely related to the dynamics of adsorbing colloidal particles. Elucidation of the mechanisms implied is key to a correct design of many different types of materials. Experiments: Microspheres forced to rotate near a fluid interface exhibit a roto-translational hydrodynamic mechanism that is hindered by capillary torques as soon as the particles protrude the interface. Under these conditions, the time evolution in the ratio of moving spheres provides a direct descr…
Superballs represent a class of particles whose shapes are defined by ${|x|}^{2p}+{|y|}^{2p}+{|z|}^{2p} \le R^{2p}$, with $p\in(0,\infty)$ being the "deformation parameter". $0<p<0.5$ represents a family of hexapodlike (concave octahedrallike) particles, while for $0.5\leq p<1$ and $p>1$ one has, respectively, families of convex octahedrallike and cubelike particles, with $p=1,\;0.5$ and $\infty$ representing spheres, octahedra, and cubes. Colloidal zeolite suspensions, catalysis, and adsorption, as well as biomedical magnetic nanoparticles are but a few of the applications of packing of super…

Many biological systems fold thin sheets of lipid membrane into complex three-dimensional structures. This microscopic origami is often mediated by the adsorption and self-assembly of proteins on a membrane. As a model system to study adsorption-mediated interactions, we study the collective behavior of micrometric particles adhered to a lipid vesicle. We estimate the colloidal interactions using a maximum likelihood analysis of particle trajectories. When the particles are highly wrapped by a tense membrane, we observe strong long-range attractions with a typical binding energy of 150 $k_B T$…
Recent experiments have demonstrated a fluctuation-induced lateral trapping of spherical colloidal particles immersed in a binary liquid mixture near its critical demixing point and exposed to chemically patterned substrates. Inspired by these experiments, we study this kind of effective interaction, known as the critical Casimir effect, for elongated colloids of cylindrical shape. This adds orientational degrees of freedom. When the colloidal particles are close to a chemically structured substrate, a critical Casimir torque acting on the colloids emerges. We calculate this torque on the basi…
The interaction of amphiphilic polymers with small colloids, capable to reversibly stick onto the chains, is studied. Adhesive small colloids in solution are able to dynamically bind two polymer segments. This association leads to topological changes in the polymer network configurations, such as looping and cross-linking, although the reversible adhesion permits the colloid to slide along the chain backbone. Previous analyses only consider static topologies in the chain network. We show that the sliding degree of freedom ensures the dominance of small loops, over other structures, giving rise…
We consider the Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij model of hard sphere colloids and ideal polymer coils in contact with a planar hard wall at (colloidal) liquid-gas coexistence. Using extensive numerical density functional calculations, the liquid-gas, wall-liquid and wall-gas interfacial free energies are calculated. The results are inserted into Young's equation to obtain the contact angle between the liquid-gas interface and the wall. As a function of polymer fugacity this angle exhibits discontinuities of slope (``kinks'') upon crossing first-order surface phase transitions located on the gas branch of …
We performed extensive Monte Carlo simulations of the irreversible adsorption of polydispersed disks inside the cells of a patterned substrate. The model captures relevant features of the irreversible adsorption of spherical colloidal particles on patterned substrates. The pattern consists of (equal) square cells, where adsorption can take place, centered at the vertices of a square lattice. Two independent, dimensionless parameters are required to control the geometry of the pattern, namely, the cell size and cell-cell distance, measured in terms of the average particle diameter. However, to …
We study colloidal particles with chemically inhomogeneous surfaces suspended in a critical binary liquid mixture. The inhomogeneous particle surface is composed of patches with alternating adsorption preferences for the two components of the binary solvent. By describing the binary liquid mixture \emph{at} its consolute point in terms of the critical Ising model we exploit its conformal invariance in two spatial dimension. This allows us to determine exactly the universal profiles of the order parameter, the energy density, and the stress tensor as well as some of their correlation functions …
Chain-like macromolecules (polymers) show characteristic adsorption properties due to their flexibility and internal degrees of freedom, when attracted to surfaces and interfaces. In this review we discuss concepts and features that are relevant to the adsorption of neutral and charged polymers at equilibrium, including the type of polymer/surface interaction, the solvent quality, the characteristics of the surface, and the polymer structure. We pay special attention to the case of charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) that have a special importance due to their water solubility. We present a su…
The vertical drying of a colloidal film containing rod-like particles was studied by means of kinetic Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. The problem was approached using a two-dimensional square lattice and the rods were represented as linear $k$-mers (i.e., particles occupying $k$ adjacent sites). The initial state before drying was produced using a model of random sequential adsorption (RSA) with isotropic orientations of the $k$-mers (orientation of the $k$-mers along horizontal $x$ and vertical $y$ directions are equiprobable). In the RSA model, overlapping of the $k$-mers is forbidden. During t…
When a drop containing colloidal particles evaporates on a surface, a circular stain made of these particles is often observed due to an internal flow toward the contact line. To hinder this effect, several approaches have been proposed such as flow modification by addition of surfactants or control of the interactions between the particles. All of these strategies involve the liquid phase while maintaining the drying process. However, substitution of evaporation by absorption into the substrate of the solvent has been investigated less. Here, we show that a droplet containing colloidal partic…
We investigate excluded-volume effects in a bidisperse colloidal suspension near a flexible interface. Inspired by a recent experiment by Dinsmore et al. (Phys. Rev, Lett. 80, 409 (1998)), we study the adsorption of a mesoscopic bead on the surface and show that depletion forces could in principle lead to particle encapsulation. We then consider the effect of surface fluctuations on the depletion potential itself and construct the density profile of a polymer solution near a soft interface. Surprisingly we find that the chains accumulate at the wall, whereas the density displays a deficit of p…
In this work, we addressed the effects of Y$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$ cations on the adsorption of the whey protein $β$-lactoglobulin (BLG) at air-water interfaces as a function of electrolyte concentration. Both cations caused very similar but dramatic changes at the interface and in the bulk solution. Here, measurements of the electropho-retic mobility and vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) were applied and consistently showed a reversal of the BLG net charge at remarkably low ion concentrations of 30 (bulk) and 40 (interface) $μ$M of Y$^{3+}$ or Nd$^{3+}$ for a BLG concentra…
We study the non-equilibrium coarsening dynamics of a binary liquid solvent around a colloidal particle in a presence of a time-dependent temperature gradient that emerges after temperature quench of a suitably coated colloid surface. The solvent is maintained at its critical concentration and the colloid is fixed in space. The coarsening patterns near the surface are shown to be strongly dependent on the colloid surface adsorption properties and on the temperature evolution. The temperature gradient alters the morphology of a binary solvent near the surface of a colloid as compared to the coa…
Colloidosomes provide a possibility to encapsulate oily substances in water in the form of core-in-shell structures. In this study, we produced microcapsules with shell from colloidal particles, where the interparticle openings are blocked by mixed layers from polymer and surfactant that prevent the leakage of cargo molecules. The particles and polymer play the role of bricks and mortar. We used hydrophilic silica particles, which were partially hydrophobized by the adsorption of potassium oleate to enable them to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Various polymers were tested to select the most a…
Microgels are soft colloidal particles constituted by cross-linked polymer networks with a high potential for applications. In particular, after adsorption at a fluid interface, interfacial tension provides two-dimensional (2D) confinement for microgel monolayers and drives the reconfiguration of the particles, enabling their deployment in foam and emulsion stabilization and in surface patterning for lithography, sensing and optical materials. However, most studies focus on systems of fluids with a high interfacial tension, e.g. alkanes/ or air/water interfaces, which imparts similar propertie…
