An interatomic potential for high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) crystalline and liquid phases of sodium is created using a neural-network (NN) representation of the ab initio potential energy surface. It is demonstrated that the NN potential provides an ab initio quality description of multiple properties of liquid sodium and bcc, fcc, cI16 crystal phases in the P-T region up to 120 GPa and 1200 K. The unique combination of computational efficiency of the NN potential and its ability to reproduce quantitatively experimental properties of sodium in the wide P-T range enables molecular dynamics simulations of physicochemical processes in HPHT sodium of unprecedented quality.
The cointercalation of sodium with the solvent organic molecule into graphite can resolve difficulty of forming the stage-I Na-graphite intercalation compound, which is a predominant anode of Na-ion battery. To clarify the mechanism of such cointercalation, we investigate the atomistic structure, energetics, electrochemical properties, ion and electron conductance, and charge transferring upon de/intercalation of the solvated Na-diglyme ion into graphite with {\it ab initio} calculations. It is found that the Na(digl)$_2$C$_n$ compound has the negatively lowest intercalation energy at $n\appro…
We have performed quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering (QENS and INS) measurements from 300 K to 1173 K to investigate the Na-diffusion and underlying host dynamics in Na2Ti3O7. The QENS data show that the Na atoms undergo localized jumps up to 1173 K. The ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations supplement the measurements and show 1-d long-ranged diffusion along the a-axis above 1500 K. The simulations indicate that the occupancy of the interstitial site is critical for long-range diffusion. The nudged-elastic-band (NEB) calculation confirmed that the activation energy barrie…
Phosphorus has received recent attention in the context of high-capacity and high-rate anodes for lithium and sodium-ion batteries. Here, we present a first principles structure prediction study combined with NMR calculations which gives us insights into its lithiation/sodiation process. We report a variety of new phases phases found by AIRSS and the atomic species swapping methods. Of particular interest, a stable Na$_5$P$_4$-C2/m structure and locally stable structures found less than 10 meV/f.u. from the convex hull, such as Li$_4$P$_3$-P2$_1$2$_1$2$_1$, NaP$_5$-Pnma and Na$_4$P$_3$-Cmcm. We present a comparative ab initio study of Li, Na, and Mg storage in tin, including phononic effects and phase competition between alpha and beta Sn. Mg doping at low concentration is found to stabilize the beta phase. On the contrary, Li and Na doping is shown to reverse the stability of the phases at room temperature: Li/Na-doped alpha-Sn is more stable than Li/Na-doped beta-Sn up to a temperature of around 380/400 K. This may rationalize the formation of alpha-Sn upon lithiation and delithiation of beta-Sn anodes reported in experimental studies. The changes in phase stability with Li/Na/M…
Electron and phonon spectra dynamics, as well as features of structural transitions and melting of sodium under pressure within range 0 to 100 GPa are investigated. Electron and phonon spectra of crystal sodium are calculated ab initio within the density functional theory by means of the LMTART-7 software package (Savrasov-Savrasov: 1992; Savrasov: 1996; Savrasov: 2004), allowing the fully potential method of linear muffin-tin orbitals. Using the Lindemann measure and the calculated phonon spectra the theoretical values of melting points corresponding to the experimental data (Gregoryanz, et a…
The only known compound of sodium and hydrogen is archetypal ionic NaH. Application of high pressure is known to promote states with higher atomic coordination, but extensive searches for polyhydrides with unusual stoichiometry remain unsuccessful in spite of several theoretical predictions. Here we report the first observation of formation of polyhydrides of Na (NaH3 and NaH7) above 40 GPa and 2000 K. We combined synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy in a laser heated diamond anvil cell and theoretical Ab-Initio Random Structure search, which both agree in stable structures and…
Helium is generally understood to be chemically inert and this is due to its extremely stable closed-shell electronic configuration, zero electron affinity and an unsurpassed ionization potential. It is not known to form thermodynamically stable compounds, except a few inclusion compounds. Here, using the ab initio evolutionary algorithm USPEX and subsequent high-pressure synthesis in a diamond anvil cell, we report the discovery of a thermodynamically stable compound of helium and sodium, Na2He, which has a fluorite-type structure and is stable at pressures >113 GPa. We show that the presence…
We propose a non-perturbative $ab$ $initio$ approach to calculate the electrical conductivity of a liquid metal. Our approach is based on the Kubo formula and the theory of electron-phonon coupling (EPC), and unlike the conventional empirical approach based on the Kubo-Greenwood formula, fully takes into account the effect of coupling between electrons and moving ions. We show that the electrical conductivity at high temperature is determined by an EPC parameter $λ_{\mathrm{tr}}$, which can be inferred, non-perturbatively, from the correlation of electron scattering matrices induced by ions. T…
Engineered $Na_{0.75}CoO_2$ is considered a prime candidate to achieve high-efficiency thermoelectric systems to regenerate electricity from waste heat. In this work, three elements with outmost electronic configurations, (1) an open d shell (Ni), (2) a closed d shell (Zn), and (3) a half filled f shell (Eu) with maximum unpaired electrons, were selected to outline the dopants' effects on electronic and crystallographic structures of $Na_{0.75}CoO_2$. Systematic $ab$ $initio$ density functional calculations with $DMOL^3$ package showed that the Ni and Zn were more stable when substituting Co w…
In this study, we synthesized single crystals of Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ with $x\sim0.8$ using the optical floating zone technique. A thorough electrochemical treatment of the samples permitted us to control the de-intercalation of Na to obtain single crystal samples of stable Na ordered phases with $x=0.5-0.8$. Comparisons of the bulk magnetic properties with those observed in the Na ordered powder samples confirmed the high quality of these single crystal phases. The ab plane resistivity was measured for the Na ordered samples and it was quite reproducible for different sample batches. The data we…
We use ab initio simulations to study the static and dynamic properties of a sodium borosilicate liquid with composition 3Na_2O-B_2O_3-6SiO_2, i.e. a system that is the basis of many glass-forming materials. In particular we focus on the question how boron is embedded into the local structure of the silicate network liquid. From the partial structure factors we conclude that there is a weak nanoscale phase separation between silicon and boron and that the sodium atoms form channel-like structures as they have been found in previous studies of sodo-silicate glass-formers. Our results for the X-…
We introduce a simple scheme to efficiently compute photon exchange-correlation contributions due to the coupling to transversal photons as formulated in the newly developed quantum-electrodynamical density functional theory (QEDFT). Our construction employs the optimized-effective potential (OEP) approach by means of the Sternheimer equation to avoid the explicit calculation of unoccupied states. We demonstrate the efficiency of the scheme by applying it to an exactly solvable GaAs quantum ring model system, a single azulene molecule, and chains of sodium dimers, all located in optical caviti…
The production of large area interfaces and the use of scalable methods to build-up designed nanostructures generating advanced functional properties are of high interest for many materials science applications. Nevertheless, large area coverage remains a major problem for pristine graphene and here we present a hybrid, composite graphene-like material soluble in water, which can be exploited in many areas, such as energy storage, electrodes fabrication, selective membranes and biosensing. Graphene oxide (GO) was produced by the traditional Hummers method being further reduced in the presence …
The effect of nanocrystal orientation on the energy loss spectra of monoclinic hafnia (m-HfO$_2$) is measured by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and valence energy loss spectroscopy (VEELS) on high quality samples. For the same momentum-transfer directions, the dielectric properties are also calculated ab initio by time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT). Experiments and simulations evidence anisotropy in the dielectric properties of m-HfO$_2$, most notably with the direction-dependent oscillator strength of the main bulk plasmon. The anisotropic nature of m-H…
