We discuss the construction of higher-dimensional surfaces based on the harmonic maps of $S^2$ into $CP^{N-1}$ and other grassmannians. We show that there are two ways of implementing this procedure - both based on the use of the relevant projectors. We study various properties of such projectors and show that the Gaussian curvature of these surfaces, in general, is not constant. We look in detail at the surfaces corresponding to the Veronese sequence of such maps and show that for all of them this curvature is constant but its value depends on which mapping is used in the construction of the surface.
The degeneration of the hyperelliptic sigma function is studied. We use the Sato Grassmannian for this purpose. A simple decomposition of a rational function gives a decomposition of Plücker coordinates of a frame of the Sato Grassmannian. It then gives a decomposition of the tau function corresponding to the degeneration of a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ in terms of the tau functions corresponding to a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g-1$. Since the tau functions are described by sigma functions, we get the corresponding formula for the degenerate hyperelliptic sigma function.
We study the non-minimal supersymmetric heterotically deformed $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ sigma model with the Grassmannian target space $\mathcal{G}_{M,N}$. To develop the appropriate superfield formalism, we begin with a simplified model with flat target space, find its beta function up to two loops, and prove a non-renormalization theorem. Then we generalize the results to the full model with the Grassmannian target space. Using the geometric formulation, we calculate the beta functions and discuss the 't Hooft and Veneziano limits.
We explore the constant curvature holomorphic solutions of the supersymmetric grassmannian sigma model $G(M,N)$ using in particular the gauge invariance of the model. Supersymmetric invariant solutions are constructed via generalizing a known result for ${C}P^{N-1}$. We show that some other such solutions also exist. Indeed, considering the simplest case of $G(2,N)$ model, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for getting the constant curvature holomorphic solutions. Since, all the constant curvature holomorphic solutions of the bosonic $G(2,4)$ $σ$-model are known, we treat this example…
Under the assumption that the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma model is defined on the Riemann sphere and its action functional is finite, we derive surfaces induced by surfaces and we demonstrate that the stacked surfaces coincide with each other, which means idempotency of the recurrent procedure. Along the path to the solutions of the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ model equations, we demonstrate that the Euler--Lagrange equations for the projectors admit larger classes of solutions than the ones corresponding to rank-1 projectors.
We study the gauge invariance of the supersymmetric grassmannian sigma model $G(M,N)$. It is richer then its purely bosonic submodel and we show how to use it in order to reduce some constant curvature holomorphic solutions of the model into simpler expressions.
We investigate certain properties of $\mathfrak{su}(N)$-valued two-dimensional soliton surfaces associated with the integrable $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models constructed by the orthogonal rank-one Hermitian projectors, which are defined on the two-dimensional Riemann sphere with finite action functional. Several new properties of the projectors mapping onto one-dimensional subspaces as well as their relations with three mutually different immersion formulas, namely, the generalized Weierstrass, Sym-Tafel and Fokas-Gel'fand have been discussed in detail. Explicit connections among these three…
The main objective of this paper is to establish a new connection between the Hermitian rank-1 projector solutions of the Euclidean $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ sigma model in two dimensions and the particular hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials called Krawtchouk polynomials. We show that any such projector solutions of the $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ model, defined on the Riemann sphere and having a finite action, can be explicitly parametrised in terms of these polynomials. We apply these results to the analysis of surfaces associated with $\mathbb{C}P^{2S}$ models defined using the generalised Weierstrass f…
We establish and analyze a new relationship between the matrices describing an arbitrary component of a spin $s$, where $2s\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, and the matrices of $\mathbb{C}P^{2s}$ two-dimensional Euclidean sigma models. The spin matrices are constructed from the rank-1 Hermitian projectors of the sigma models or from the antihermitian immersion functions of their soliton surfaces in the $\mathfrak{su}(2s+1)$ algebra. For the spin matrices which can be represented as a linear combination of the generalized Pauli matrices, we find the dynamics equation satisfied by its coefficients. The equatio…
We present a theory of optimal topological textures in nonlinear sigma-models with degrees of freedom living in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ manifold. These textures describe skyrmion lattices of $N$-component fermions in a quantising magnetic field, relevant to the physics of graphene, bilayer and other multicomponent quantum Hall systems near integer filling factors $ν>1$. We derive analytically the optimality condition, minimizing topological charge density fluctuations, for a general Grassmannian sigma model $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ on a sphere and a torus, together with counting argument…
