We calculate the running of the three coupling constants in cosmological, topologically massive 3d gravity. We find that ν, the dimensionless coefficient of the Chern-Simons term, has vanishing beta function. The flow of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant depends on ν, and for any positive νthere exist both a trivial and a nontrivial fixed point.
We compute the one-loop beta functions of the cosmological constant, Newton's constant and the topological mass in topologically massive supergravity in three dimensions. We use a variant of the proper time method supplemented by a simple choice of cutoff function. We find that the dimensionless coefficient of the Chern-Simons term, $ν$, has vanishing beta function. The flow of the cosmological constant and Newton's constant depends on $ν$; we study analytically the structure of the flow and its fixed points in the limits of small and large $ν$.
An uncomplicated and easily handling prescription that converts the task of checking the unitarity of massive, topologically massive, models into a straightforward algebraic exercise, is developed. The algorithm is used to test the unitarity of both topologically massive higher-derivative electromagnetism and topologically massive higher-derivative gravity. The novel and amazing features of these effective field models are also discussed.
The superfield equations of massive IIA supergravity, in the form of constraints on the superspace geometry, are shown to be implied by $κ$-symmetry of the topologically massive D-2-brane.
We investigate the topologically new massive gravity in three dimensions. It turns out that a single massive mode is propagating in the flat spacetime, comparing to the conformal Chern-Simons gravity which has no physically propagating degrees of freedom. Also we discuss the realization of the BMS/GCA correspondence.
The addition of a topologically massive term to an admittedly non-unitary three-dimensional massive model, be it an electromagnetic system or a gravitational one, does not cure its non-unitarity. What about the enlargement of avowedly unitary massive models by way of a topologically massive term? The electromagnetic models remain unitary after the topological augmentation but, surprisingly enough, the gravitational ones have their unitarity spoiled. Here we analyze these issues and present the explanation why unitary massive gravitational models, unlike unitary massive electromagnetic ones, ca…
We consider renormalizability of topologically massive gravity in three space-time dimensions. With a usual parametrization of the metric tensor, we establish the statement that topologically massive gravity is in fact renormalizable. In this proof, we make use of not only a recently found, new infrared regularization method of scalar mode but also a covariant ultraviolet regulator with a specific combination of higher derivative terms which is motivated by the new massive gravity in three dimensions.
We show that the linking number of two homologically trivial disjoint $p$ and $(D-p-1)$-dimensional submanifolds of a $D$-dimensional manifold can be derived from the topologically massive $BC$ theory in low energy regime.
We find the critical charge for a topologically massive gauge theory for any gauge group, generalising our earlier result for SU(2). The relation between critical charges in TMGT, singular vectors in the WZNW model and logarithmic CFT is investigated.
We study topologically massive (B \wedge F) Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories in four dimensions, and reduce them to three dimensions by assuming that the fields do not propagate in one of the spatial directions. For certain gauge choices the reduced theories are the Jackiw-Pi models of massive gauge fields.
We thereby prove that a large class of topologically massive theories of the Cremmer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond-type in any $d$ dimensions corresponds to gauge non-invariant first-order theories that can be interpreted as self-dual models.
For a (2+1)-dimensional topologically massive Born-Infeld theory, we compute the interaction potential within the structure of the gauge-invariant but path-dependent variables formalism. The result is equivalent to that of $QED_3$ with a Thirring interaction term among fermions, in the short distance regime.
We calculate quasinormal modes of a massive scalar perturbation on the topologically massive black hole (CS-BTZ black hole). The chiral point of $μ\ell=1$ corresponds to a newly extremal black hole. We show that there is no quasinormal modes at this point. Accordingly, we prove the unitarity of the CS-BTZ black hole at the chiral point.
We consider the four dimensional topologically massive electrodynamics in which a gauge field is interacting with 2nd rank antisymmetric tensor field through a topological interaction. The photon becomes massive by eating the 2nd rank tensor field, which is dual to the Higgs mechanism. We explicitly demonstrate the nature of the mechanism by performing a canonical analysis of the theory and discuss various aspects of it.
We explicitly calculate the one-loop effective potential for the supersymmetric topologically massive gauge theory in four dimensions, where the chiral scalar superfield is directly coupled to the field strength for the gauge spinor superfield.
I discuss the applicability in Weyl-invariant induced gravity and topologically massive gravity of certain formulas originally derived by Knizhnik, Polyakov, and Zamolodchikov in the context of diffeomorphism-invariant induced gravity.
We analyse the equivalence between topologically massive gauge theory (TMGT) and different formulations of non-topologically massive gauge theories (NTMGTs) in the canonical approach. The different NTMGTs studied are Stückelberg formulation of (A) a first order formulation involving one and two form fields, (B) Proca theory, and (C) massive Kalb-Ramond theory. We first quantise these reducible gauge systems by using the phase space extension procedure and using it, identify the phase space variables of NTMGTs which are equivalent to the canonical variables of TMGT and show that under this the …
Using the superfield formalism and the master action approach, we prove, both at the classical and quantum levels, the dual equivalence between four-dimensional supersymmetric self-dual and topologically massive models coupled to dynamical matter.
We demonstrate the classical stability of the BTZ black hole within the context of topologically massive gravity. The linearized perturbation equations can be solved exactly in this case. By choosing standard boundary conditions appropriate to the stability problem, we demonstrate the absence of modes which grow in time, for all values of the Chern-Simons coupling.
The (2+1) dimensional non-linear electrodynamics, the so called Pagels--Tomboulis electrodynamics, with the Chern--Simons term is considered. We obtain "generalized self--dual equation" and find the corresponding generalized massive Chern--Simons Lagrangian. Similar results for (2+1) massive dilaton electrodynamics have been obtained.
We discuss the structure of the vacua in $O(2)$ topologically massive gauge theory on a torus. Since $O(2)$ has two connected components, there are four classical vacua. The different vacua impose different boundary conditions on the gauge potentials. We also discuss the non-perturbative transitions between the vacua induced by vortices of the theory.
We construct a novel topologically massive abelian Chern-Simons gauge theory with 32 global supersymmetries in three spacetime dimensions. In spite of the 32 supercharges, the theory exhibits massive excitations only up to spin 1. The possibility of such a multiplet shortening is due to the presence of non-central R-symmetry generators in the Poincare superalgebra, whose supermultiplets are determined.
We manifestly verify that the miraculous cancellation of the infrared divergence of the topologically massive Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge is completely determined by a new vector symmetry existing in its large topological mass limit, the Chern-Simons theory. Furthermore, we show that the cancellation theorem proposed by Pisarski and Rao is an inevitable consequence of this new vector symmetry.
In an abelian topologically massive gauge theory, any eigenstate of the Hamiltonian can be decomposed into a factor describing massive propagating gauge bosons and a Chern-Simons wave function describing a set of nonpropagating ``topological'' excitations. The energy depends only on the propagating modes, and energy eigenstates thus occur with a degeneracy that can be parametrized by the Hilbert space of the pure Chern-Simons theory. We show that for a {\em nonabelian} topologically massive gauge theory, this degeneracy is lifted: although the Gauss law constraint can be solved with a similar …
We discuss the possibility for the spectrum of topologically massive quantum electrodynamics with spinor matter fields to contain unexpected and unusual stable particle excitations for certain values of the topological photon mass. The new field theoretical phenomena arising from this novel spectral structure are briefly discussed.
We discuss the evaluation of observables in two-dimensional conformal field theory using the topological membrane description. We show that the spectrum of anomalous dimensions can be obtained perturbatively from the topologically massive quantum field theories by computing radiative corrections to Aharonov-Bohm scattering amplitudes for dynamical charged matter fields. The one-loop corrections in the case of topologically massive Yang-Mills theory are shown to coincide with the scaling dimensions of the induced ordinary and supersymmetric WZNW models. We examine the effects of the dressing of…
The asymptotic solutions of cosmological topologically massive gravity (TMG) are analyzed for values of the mass parameter in the range $μ\geq1$. At non-chiral values, a new term in the Fefferman-Graham expansion is needed to capture the bulk degree of freedom. The CDWW modes provide a basis for the pure non-Einstein solutions at all $μ$, with nonlinear corrections appearing at higher order in the expansion.
We investigate in which sense, at the linearized level, one can extend the 3D topologically massive gravity theory beyond three dimensions. We show that, for each k=1,2,3... a free topologically massive gauge theory in 4k-1 dimensions can be defined describing a massive "spin-2" particle provided one uses a non-standard representation of the massive "spin-2" state which makes use of a two-column Young tableau where each column is of height 2k-1. We work out the case of k=2, i.e. 7D, and show, by canonical analysis, that the model describes, unitarily, 35 massive "spin-2" degrees of freedom. Th…
We investigate the perturbative dynamics of noncommutative topologically massive gauge theories with softly broken supersymmetry. The deformed dispersion relations induced by noncommutativity are derived and their implications on the quantum consistency of the theory are discussed.
We describe the construction of $2+1$-dimensional toplogically massive adS gravity with ${\mathcal{N}}$-extended supersymmetry in superspace by means of introducing a compensating hypermultiplet for the super-Weyl invariance. For $\mathcal{N}\geq 3$ the scalar multiplet must be on shell and the potential for the scalar compensator is completely determined by the geometry. As a consequence the resulting massive theory has no free parameter for $\mathcal{N}\geq 4$. For $\mathcal{N}= 4$ we show that this leads to topologically massive gravity at the chiral point and construct the corresponding of…
We explore topologically massive gauge theories using the covariant colour kinematics duality recently introduced by Cheung and Mangan. We show that the massive bi-adjoint scalar field is simply related to topologically massive gauge theory by the duality, and that enacting the same duality on the gauge theory produces topologically massive gravity coupled to a scalar or, equivalently, an antisymmetric field. We also show that different choices for the replacement of the colour structure constants with kinematic structure constants lead to different theories, including a topologically massive …
The entropy of a Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli black hole in topologically massive gravity had been given with the form inconsistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. In the paper, we provide a consistent statistical interpretation for the entropy, and confirm it to be thermodynamic entropy by preserving the first and second laws. As a novel extension, the logarithmic correction to the black hole entropy is also discussed.
We quantize the Einstein gravity in the formalism of weak gravitational fields by using the constrained Hamiltonian method. Special emphasis is given to the 2+1 spacetime dimensional case where a (topological) Chern-Simons term is added to the Lagrangian.
We study the topologically massive gravity at the chiral point (chiral gravity) by using the logarithmic conformal field theory. Two new tensor fields of $ψ^{new}$ and $X$ are introduced for a candidate of propagating physical field at the chiral point. However, we show that ($ψ^{new},ψ^L$) form a dipole ghost pair of unphysical fields and $X$ is not a primary. This implies that there is no physically propagating degrees of freedom at the chiral point.
We show that, with the help of a general BRST symmetry, different theories in 3 dimensions can be connected through a fundamental topological field theory related to the classical limit of the Chern-Simons model.
By applying the Faddeev-Jackiw symplectic approach we systematically show that both the local gauge symmetry and the constraint structure of topologically massive gravity with a cosmological constant $Λ$, elegantly encoded in the zero-modes of the symplectic matrix, can be identified. Thereafter, via an appropriate partial gauge-fixing procedure, the time gauge, we calculate the quantization bracket structure (generalized Faddeev-Jackiw brackets) for the dynamic variables and confirm that the number of physical degrees of freedom is one. This approach provides an alternative to explore the dyn…
The set of degenerate ground states of an arbitrary nonabelian topologically massive gauge theory is shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the Hilbert space of the associated pure Chern-Simons theory. (Paper is being withdrawn: original conclusion is incorrect for the nonabelian case. For a correct treatment, see M. Asorey, S. Carlip, and F. Falceto, hep-th/9304081.)
The first order form of a three dimensional U(1) gauge theory in which a gauge invariant mass term appears is analyzed using the Dirac procedure. The form of the gauge transformation which leaves the action invariant is derived from the constraints present.
We show that the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop for topologically massive abelian gauge theory in $\RR^3$ can be defined so that its large-mass limit be the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop for abelian Chern-Simons theory also in $\RR^3$.
We construct an effective action for "soft" gluons by integrating out hard thermal modes of topologically massive vector bosons at one loop order. The loop carrying hard gluons (momentum $\sim T$) are known as hard thermal loop (HTL). The gluons are massive in the non-Abelian topologically massive model (TMM) due to a quadratic coupling $B\wedge F$ where a 2-form field $B$ is coupled quadratically with the field strength $F$ of Yang-Mills (YM) field. The mass of the gluons plays an important role in the perturbative analysis of thermal field theory. Due to the presence of this infrared cut-off…
We establish a duality between massive fermions coupled to topologically massive gravity (TGM) in $d=3$ space-time dimensions and a purely gravity theory which also will turn out to be a TGM theory but with different parameters: the original graviton mass in the TGM theory coupled to fermions picks-up a contribution from fermion bosonization. We obtain explicit bosonization rules for the fermionic currents and for the energy-momentum-tensor showing that the identifications do not depend explicitly on the parameters of the theory. These results are the gravitational analog of the results for $2…
We study and discuss some of the consequences of the inclusion of torsion in 3D Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity. Torsion may trigger the excitation of non-physical modes in the spectrum. Higher-derivative terms are then added up and tree-level unitarity is contemplated.
We correct a sign in the first variation of the on-shell action of cosmological topologically massive gravity at the chiral point and present the three equations affected by that sign. While this does not change any of the main conclusions of arXiv:0805.2610, it modifies the finite part of the Brown-York stress tensor. Our corrected Brown-York stress tensor is still finite, conserved and traceless, but no longer coincides with that of global AdS_3. It agrees with results found in recent literature.
In this paper we obtain conserved charges of spin-3 topologically massive gravity by using a quasi-local formalism. We find a general formula to calculate conserved charge of the spin-3 topologically massive gravity which corresponds to a Killing vector field $ξ$. We show that this general formula reduces to the previous one for the ordinary spin-3 gravity presented in \cite{31} when we take into account only transformation under diffeomorphism, without considering generalized Lorentz gauge transformation (i.e. $λ_ξ =0$), and by taking $\frac{1}μ\rightarrow 0$. Then we obtain a general formula…
We apply differential renormalization method to the study of three-dimensional topologically massive Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons theories. The method is especially suitable for such theories as it avoids the need for dimensional continuation of three-dimensional antisymmetric tensor and the Feynman rules for three-dimensional theories in coordinate space are relatively simple. The calculus involved is still lengthy but not as difficult as other existing methods of calculation. We compute one-loop propagators and vertices and derive the one-loop local effective action for topologically massive …
A Higgs mechanism for Abelian theories over non-trivial background flat connections is proposed. It is found that the mass generated for the spin 1 excitation is the same as the one obtained from the standard Higgs mechanism over trivial backgrounds, however, the dynamical structure of the action for the Higgs scalar is completely different from the usual approach. There is a topological contribution to the mass term of the Higgs field. After functional integration over all backgrounds, it is shown that the action for the massive spin 1 excitation is dual to the Topologically Massive Models in…
Abelian topologically massive gauge theories (TMGT) provide a topological mechanism to generate mass for any p-tensor boson in any dimension. Within the Hamiltonian formulation, the embedded topological field theory (TFT) is not made manifest. We therefore introduce a gauge invariant factorization of the classical phase space in two orthogonal sectors. The first of these sectors is that of gauge invariant dynamical variables with massive excitations. The second is that of a decoupled TFT. Through canonical quantization, a factorization of quantum states arises, enabling the projection from TMG…
We start with a new first order gauge non-invariant formulation of massive spin-one theory and map it to a reducible gauge theory viz; abelian $B{\wedge}F$ theory by the Hamiltonian embedding procedure of Batalin, Fradkin and Tyutin(BFT). This equivalence is shown from the equations of motion of the embedded Hamiltonian. We also demonstrate that the original gauge non-invariant model and the topologically massive gauge theory can both be obtained by suitable choice of gauges, from the phase space partition function of the emebedded Hamiltonian, proving their equivalence. Comparison of the firs…
The Galilean Conformal Algebra (GCA) arises from the relativistic conformal algebra in the non-relativistic limit. In two dimensions, one can view it as a limit of linear combinations of the two copies Virasoro algebra. Recently, it has been argued that Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) realizes the quantum 2d GCA in a particular scaling limit of the gravitational Chern-Simons term. To add strength to this claim, we demonstrate a matching of correlation functions on both sides of this correspondence. A priori looking for spatially dependent correlators seems to force us to deal with high spi…
We consider self-duality in a 2+1 dimensional gauge theory containing both the Born-Infeld and the Chern-Simons terms. We introduce a Born-Infeld inspired generalization of the Proca term and show that the corresponding self dual equation is identical to that of the Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons theory.
We first make a Killing spinor analysis for a general three-dimensional off-shell $N=(2,0)$ supergravity and find conditions for a bosonic background to preserve some supersymmetry . We then consider a particular model, namely $N=(2,0)$ topologically massive supergravity and impose its field equations. By making a suitable ansatz on metric functions we find a large class of solutions that include spacelike, timelike and null warped $AdS_3$ among others. Isometric quotients of spacelike and timelike squashed $AdS_3$ solutions yield extremal black holes without closed causal curves.
In this report we study the dual equivalence between the generalized self-dual (SD) and topologically massive (TM) models. To this end we linearize the model using an auxiliary field and apply a gauge embedding procedure to construct a gauge equivalent model. We clearly show that, under the above conditions, a nonlinear SD model always has a duality equivalent TM action. The general result obtained is then particularized for a number of examples, including the Born-Infeld-Chern-Simons (BICS) model recently discussed in the literature.
We study quantum Chern-Simons theory as the large mass limit of the limit $D\to 3$ of dimensionally regularized topologically massive Yang-Mills theory. This approach can also be interpreted as a BRS-invariant hybrid regularization of Chern-Simons theory, consisting of a higher-covariant derivative Yang-Mills term plus dimensional regularization. Working in the Landau gauge, we compute radiative corrections up to second order in perturbation theory and show that there is no two-loop correction to the one-loop shift $k\rightarrow k+ c_{\scriptscriptstyle V},\,\,k$ being the bare Chern-Simons pa…
We study the equivalence between the $B\wedge F$ self-dual ($SD_{B\wedge F}$) and the $B\wedge F$ topologically massive ($TM_{B\wedge F}$) models including the coupling to dynamical, U(1) charged fermionic matter. This is done through an iterative procedure of gauge embedding that produces the dual mapping. In the interactive cases, the minimal coupling adopted for both vector and tensor fields in the self-dual representation is transformed into a non minimal magnetic like coupling in the topologically massive representation but with the currents swapped. It is known that to establish this equ…
We show that topologically massive gravity can be obtained by the consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction from recently constructed seven-dimensional gravity with topological terms. The internal four-manifold should be Einstein with the Pontryagin four-form constantly proportional to the volume form. We also discuss the possible lift of the system to D=11. This enables us to connect the mass parameter \tildeμin D=3 to the M5-brane charge. The dimensionless quantity 3/(G\tilde μ) is discrete and proportional to N, where N is the number of M5-branes.
In topologically massive QED$_{2+1}$ with $N$ flavours, there is the possibility that two equal-charged fermions can form a bound state pair in either s-wave or p-wave. We are concerned about the s-wave pairs and obtain the low energy effective action describing them. It is shown that the fermion pairs behave like doubly charged spin-1 bosons and, when they condense, the gauge field aquires the longitudinal mass. The approximate $SU(2)$ symmetry due to the similarity between the fermion pairs and the gauge field is discussed.
We consider Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG), which is three dimensional general relativity with a cosmological constant and a gravitational Chern-Simons term. When the cosmological constant is negative the theory has two potential vacuum solutions: Anti-de Sitter space and Warped Anti-de Sitter space. The theory also contains a massive graviton state which renders these solutions unstable for certain values of the parameters and boundary conditions. We study the decay of these solutions due to the condensation of the massive graviton mode using Ricci-Cotton flow, which is the appropriate g…
There exists a well-known duality between the Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory and the self-dual massive model in 2+1 dimensions. This dual description has been extended to topologically massive gauge theories (TMGT) in any dimension. This Letter introduces an unconventional approach to the construction of this type of duality through a reparametrisation of the master theory action. The dual action thereby obtained preserves the same gauge symmetry structure as the original theory. Furthermore, the dual action is factorised into a propagating sector of massive gauge invariant variables and a sector…
We study the topologically massive gravity with a negative cosmological constant on AdS$_2$ spacetimes by making use of dimensional reduction. For a constant dilaton, this two-dimensional model admits three AdS$_2$ vacuum solutions, which are related to AdS$_3$ and warped AdS$_3$ with an identification upon uplifting three dimensions. We carry out the perturbation analysis around these backgrounds to find what is a physically propagating field. It turns out that a mode of $δF = (h-f/e)$ is merely a redundant field of dilaton $φ$ in the absence of Chern-Simons terms, while it becomes a massive …
A recent paper [arXiv:0801.4566] claims that topologically massive gravity contains only chiral boundary excitations at a particular value of the Chern-Simons coupling. On the other hand, propagating bulk degrees of freedom were found even at the chiral point in [arXiv:0803.3998]. The two references use very different methods, making comparison of their respective claims difficult. In this letter, we use the method of [arXiv:0801.4566] to construct a tower of propagating bulk states satisfying standard AdS boundary conditions. Our states have finite norm, with sign opposite to that of right-mo…
The effective potential for a dynamical Wick field (dynamical signature) induced by the quantum effects of massive fields on a topologically non-trivial $D$ dimensional background is considered. It is shown that when the radius of the compactified dimension is very small compared with $Λ^{1/2}$ (where $Λ$ is a proper-time cutoff), a flat metric with Lorentzian signature is preferred on ${\bf R}^4 \times {\bf S}^1$. When the compactification radius becomes larger a careful analysis of the 1-loop effective potential indicates that a Lorentzian signature is preferred in both $D=6$ and $D=4$ and t…
