We report on temperature-dependent magnetoresistance measurements in balanced double quantum wells exposed to microwave irradiation for various frequencies. We have found that the resistance oscillations are described by the microwave-induced modification of electron distribution function limited by inelastic scattering (inelastic mechanism), up to a temperature of T*~4 K. With increasing temperature, a strong deviation of the oscillation amplitudes from the behavior predicted by this mechanism is observed, presumably indicating a crossover to another mechanism of microwave photoresistance, with similar frequency dependence. Our analysis shows that this deviation cannot be fully understood in terms of contribution from the mechanisms discussed in theory.

We report on experimental and theoretical studies of microwave-induced resistance oscillations in a two-dimensional electron gas over a wide range of microwave intensities. We observe a distinct crossover from linear to sublinear power dependence of the oscillation amplitude and a concomitant narrowing of the oscillation extrema. To explain our observations we propose a theory based on the quantum kinetic equation at arbitrary microwave power. Taken together, these findings demonstrate a crucial role of multiphoton processes at elevated microwave intensities.
Magnetotransport measurements on a high-mobility electron bilayer system formed in a wide GaAs quantum well reveal vanishing dissipative resistance under continuous microwave irradiation. Profound zero-resistance states (ZRS) appear even in the presence of additional intersubband scattering of electrons. We study the dependence of photoresistance on frequency, microwave power. and temperature. Experimental results are compared with a theory demonstrating that the conditions for absolute negative resistivity correlate with the appearance of ZRS.
We present a method to quantify the spin Hall angle (SHA) with spin pumping and microwave photoresistance measurements. With this method, we separate the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) from other unwanted effects for permalloy/Pt bilayers using out-of-plane microwave excitation. Through microwave photoresistance measurements, the in- and out-of-plane precessing angles of the magnetization are determined and enabled for the exact determination of the injected pure spin current. This method is demonstrated with an almost perfect Lorentz line-shape for the obtained ISHE signal and the frequency …
In bilayer CrI3, experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the magnetic order is closely related to the layer staking configuration. In this work, we study the effect of dynamical lattice distortions, induced by non-linear phonon coupling, in the magnetic order of the bilayer system. We use density functional theory to determine the phonon properties and group theory to obtain the allowed phonon-phonon interactions. We find that the bilayer structure possesses low-frequency Raman modes that can be non-linearly activated upon the coherent photo-excitation of a suitable infrared phonon m…
Electron and hole Bloch states in gapped bilayer graphene exhibit topological orbital magnetic moments with opposite signs near the band edges, which allows for tunable valley-polarization in an out-of-plane magnetic field. This intrinsic property makes electron and hole quantum dots (QDs) in bilayer graphene interesting for valley and spin-valley qubits. Here we show measurements of the electron-hole crossover in a bilayer graphene QD, demonstrating the opposite sign of the orbital magnetic moments associated with the Berry curvature. Using three layers of metallic top gates, we independently…
We investigate the gap in the single-electron spectrum of twisted bilayer graphene. In a perfect infinite lattice of a twisted bilayer, the gap varies exponentially in response to weak changes of the twist angle. Such a large sensitivity makes theoretical predictions of the gap nearly impossible, since experimentally the twist angle is always known with finite accuracy. To address this issue, we numerically study finite clusters of twisted bilayer graphene. For finite systems, changing the twist angle causes a gradual crossover between gapless and gapped regimes. The crossover occurs when the …
We study theoretically how energy and heat are transferred between the two-dimensional layers of bilayer carrier systems due to near-field interlayer carrier interaction. We derive general expressions for the interlayer heat transfer and thermal conductance. Approximation formulas and detailed calculations for semiconductor and graphene based bilayers are presented. Our calculations for GaAs, Si and graphene bilayers show that the interlayer heat transfer can exceed the electron-phonon heat transfer below (system dependent) finite crossover temperature. We show that disorder strongly enhances …

Several recent experiments have reported an anomalous temperature dependence of the Coulomb drag effect in electron-hole bilayers. Motivated by these puzzling data, we study theoretically a low-density electron-hole bilayer, where electrons and holes avoid quantum degeneracy by forming excitonic molecules. We describe the ionization-recombination crossover between the electron-hole plasma and exciton gas and calculate both the intralayer and drag resistivity as a function of temperature. The latter exhibits a minimum followed by a sharp upturn at low temperatures in a qualitative agreement wit…
We study thermal fluctuations of a free-standing bilayer graphene subject to vanishing external tension. Within a phenomenological theory, the system is described as a stack of two continuum crystalline membranes, characterized by finite elastic moduli and a nonzero bending rigidity. A nonlinear rotationally-invariant model guided by elasticity theory is developed to describe interlayer interactions. After neglection of in-plane phonon nonlinearities and anharmonic interactions involving interlayer shear and compression modes, an effective theory for soft flexural fluctuations of the bilayer i…
We report the fabrication of electrostatically defined nanostructures in encapsulated bilayer graphene, with leakage resistances below depletion gates as high as $R \sim 10~$G$Ω$. This exceeds previously reported values of $R =~$10 - 100 k$Ω$.\cite{Zou2010,Yan2010,Zhu2016a} We attribute this improvement to the use of a graphite back gate. We realize two split gate devices which define an electronic channel on the scale of the Fermi-wavelength. A channel gate covering the gap between the split gates varies the charge carrier density in the channel. We observe device-dependent conductance quanti…

We propose a generic topological insulator bilayer (TIB) system to study the excitonic condensation with self-consistent mean-field (SCMF) theory. We show that the TIB system presents the crossover behavior from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limit to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit. Moreover, by comparison with traditional semiconductor systems, we find that for the present system the superfluid property in the BEC phase is more sensitive to electron-hole density imbalance and the BCS phase is more robust. Applying this TIB model into Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$-family material, we find that…
Linear resistivity at low temperatures is a prominent feature of high-T$_c$ superconductors which has also been found recently in twisted bilayer graphene. We show that due to an extended van Hove singularity (vHS), the $T$-linear resistivity can be obtained from a microscopic tight-binding model for filling factors close to the vHS. The linear behavior is shown to be related to the linear energy dependence of the electron quasiparticle decay rate which implies the low-energy logarithmic attenuation of the quasiparticle weight. These are distinctive features of a marginal Fermi liquid, which w…
We calculate the heat transfer between electrons to acoustic and optical phonons in monolayer and bilayer graphene (MLG and BLG) within the quasiequilibrium approximation. For acoustic phonons, we show how the temperature-power laws of the electron-phonon heat current for BLG differ from those previously derived for MLG and note that the high-temperature (neutral-regime) power laws for MLG and BLG are also different, with a weaker dependence on the electronic temperature in the latter. In the general case we evaluate the heat current numerically. We suggest that a measurement of the heat curre…
Auto-oscillations of magnetization driven by direct spin current have been previously observed in multiple quasi-zero-dimensional (0D) ferromagnetic systems such as nanomagnets and nanocontacts. Recently, it was shown that pure spin Hall current can excite coherent auto-oscillatory dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic nanowires but not in quasi-two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic films. Here we study the 1D to 2D dimensional crossover of current-driven magnetization dynamics in wire-based Pt/$\mathrm{Ni}_{80}\mathrm{Fe}_{20}$ bilayer spin Hall oscillators via varying the wire wi…
The chiral Hamiltonian for twisted graphene bilayers is analyzed in terms of its squared Hamiltonian which removes the particle-hole symmetry and thus one bipartite lattice, allowing to write the Hamiltonian in terms of a $2\times 2$ matrix. This brings to the front the three main physical actors of twisted systems: kinetic energy, confinement potential and an interlayer interaction operator which is divided in two parts: a non-Abelian interlayer operator and an operator which contains an interaction energy between layers. Here, each of these components is analyzed as a function of the angle o…
Interlayer coupling effects between high mobility two-dimensional superconductors are studied in bilayer delta-doped SrTiO3 heterostructures. By tuning the undoped SrTiO3 spacer layer between the dopant planes, clear tunable coupling is demonstrated in the variation of the sheet carrier density, Hall mobility, superconducting transition temperature, and the temperature- and angle-dependences of the superconducting upper critical field. Systematic variation is found between one effective (merged) two-dimensional superconductor to two decoupled two-dimensional superconductors. In the intermediat…
We study the collective modes of the quantum Hall states in undoped bilayer graphene in a strong perpendicular magnetic and electric field. Both for the well-known ferromagnetic state that is relevant for small electric field $E_\perp$ and the analogous valley/layer polarized one suitable for large $E_\perp$, the low energy physics is dominated by magnetoexcitons with zero angular momentum that are even combinations of excitons that conserve Landau orbitals. We identify a long wave length instability in both states, and argue that there is an intermediate range of the electric field $E^{(1)}_\…

We present a simple analytical approach to study anharmonic effects in single layer, bilayer, and multilayer graphene. The coupling between in plane and out of plane modes leads to negative Grüneisen coefficients and negative thermal expansion. The value of the thermal expansion coefficient depends on the coupling to the substrate. The bending rigidity in bilayer graphene shows a crossover between a long wavelength regime where its value is determined by the in plane elastic properties and a short wavelength regime where its value approaches twice that of a single layer.
In two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets, anisotropy is essential for the magnetic ordering as dictated by the Mermin-Wagner theorem. But when competing anisotropies are present, the phase transition becomes nontrivial. Here, utilizing highly sensitive susceptometry of scanning superconducting quantum interference device microscopy, we probe the spin correlations of ABC-stacked CrBr3 under zero magnetic field. We identify a plateau feature in susceptibility above the critical temperature (Tc) in thick samples. It signifies a crossover regime induced by the competition between easy-plane intralayer…
One of important challenges in condensed-matter physics is to realize new quantum states of matter by manipulating the dimensionality of materials, as represented by the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in atomic-layer pnictides and room-temperature quantum Hall effect in graphene. Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a fertile platform for exploring novel quantum phenomena accompanied by the dimensionality change, since they exhibit a variety of electronic/magnetic states owing to quantum confinement. Here we report an anomalous metal-insulator transition induced by …
