Minimum numbers of fixed points or of coincidence components (realized by maps in given homotopy classes) are the principal objects of study in topological fixed point and coincidence theory. In this paper we investigate fiberwise analoga and represent a general approach e.g. to the question when two maps can be deformed until they are coincidence free. Our method involves normal bordism theory, a certain pathspace EB and a natural generalization of Nielsen numbers. As an illustration we determine the minimum numbers for all maps between torus bundles of arbitrary (possibly different) dimensions over spheres and, in particular, over the unit circle. Our results are based on a careful analysis of the geometry of generic coincidence manifolds. They allow also a simple algebraic description in terms of the Reidemeister invariant (a certain selfmap of an abelian group) and its orbit behavior (e.g. the number of odd order orbits which capture certain nonorientability phenomena). We carry out several explicit sample computations, e.g. for fixed points in (S1)2-bundles. In particular, we obtain existence criteria for fixed point free fiberwise maps.
Each closed oriented 3-manifold $M$ is naturally associated with a set of integers $D(M)$, the degrees of all self-maps on $M$. $D(M)$ is determined for each torus bundle and torus semi-bundle $M$. The structure of torus semi-bundle is studied in detail. The paper is a part of a project to determine $D(M)$ for all 3-manifolds in Thurston's picture.
The notion of a (stably) decomposable fiber bundle is introduced. In low dimensions, for torus fiber bundles over a circle the notion translates into a property of elements of the special linear group of integral matrices. We give a complete characterization of the stably decomposable torus fiber bundle of fiber-dimension less than 4 over the circle.
In this note we define a lifting of a local torus action modeled on the standard representation (we call it a local torus action for simplicity) to a principal torus bundle, and show that there is an obstruction class for the existence of liftings in the first cohomology of the fundamental group of the orbit space with coefficients in a certain module.
The main purpose this work is to study the minimal fixed point set of fiber-preserving maps for spaces which are fiber bundles over the circle and the fiber is the torus. Using the one-parameter fixed point theory is possible to describe these sets in terms of the fundamental group and the induced homomorphism.
We give a homotopy invariant construction of the Reidemeister trace for the coincidence of two maps between closed manifolds of not necessarily the same dimensions. It is realized as a homology class of the homotopy equalizer, which coincides with the Hurewicz image of Koschorke's stabilized bordism invariant. To define it, we use a kind of shriek maps appearing string topology. As an application, we compute the coincidence Reidemeister trace for the self-coincidence of the projections of $S^1$-bundles on $\mathbb{C}P^n$. We also mention how to relate our construction to the string topology op…
For a torus bundle (S^1 x S^1) -> E -> S^1$, we construct a finite free resolution Z over ZG, where G is the fundamental group of the total space E, and then we compute the cohomology groups H^*(G,Z) and H^*(G,Z_p) for a prime p. We also construct a partial diagonal approximation for the resolution, which allows us to compute the cup product in H^*(G,Z) and H^*(G,Z_p).
Given two fiberwise maps f1, f2 between smooth fiber bundles over a base manifold B, we develop techniques for calculating their Nielsen coincidence number. In certain settings we can describe the Reidemeister set of (f1,f2) as the orbit set of a group operation of π1(B). The size and number of orbits captures crucial extra information. E.g. for torus bundles of arbitrary dimensions over the circle this determines the minimum coincidence numbers of the pair (f1,f2) completely. In particular we can decide when f1 and f2 can be deformed away from one another or when a fiberwise selfmap can be ma…
We exhaustively classify topological equivariant complex vector bundles over two-torus under a compact Lie group (not necessarily effective) action. It is shown that inequivariant Chern classes and isotropy representations at (at most) six points are sufficient to classify equivariant vector bundles except a few cases. To do it, we calculate homotopy of the set of equivariant clutching maps. And, classification on real projective plane, Klein bottle will appear soon
Symplectic torus bundles $ξ:T^{2}\to E\to B$ are classified by the second cohomology group of $B$ with local coefficients $H_{1}(T^{2})$. For $B$ a compact, orientable surface, the main theorem of this paper gives a necessary and sufficient condition on the cohomology class corresponding to $ξ$ for $E$ to admit a symplectic structure compatible with the symplectic bundle structure of $ξ$ : namely, that it be a torsion class. The proof is based on a group-extension-theoretic construction of J. Huebschmann (Sur les premieres differentielles de la suite spectrale cohomologique d'une extension de …
Let $f_1,...,f_k:M\to N$ be maps between closed manifolds, $N(f_1,...,f_k)$ and $R(f_1,...,f_k)$ be the Nielsen and the Reideimeister coincidence numbers respectively. In this note, we relate $R(f_1,...,f_k)$ with $R(f_1,f_2),...,R(f_1,f_k)$. When $N$ is a torus or a nilmanifold, we compute $R(f_1,...,f_k)$ which, in these cases, is equal to $N(f_1,...,f_k)$.
Let $f_1,..., f_k:X\to N$ be maps from a complex $X$ to a compact manifold $N$, $k\ge 2$. In previous works \cite{BLM,MS}, a Lefschetz type theorem was established so that the non-vanishing of a Lefschetz type coincidence class $L(f_1,...,f_k)$ implies the existence of a coincidence $x\in X$ such that $f_1(x)=...=f_k(x)$. In this paper, we investigate the converse of the Lefschetz coincidence theorem for multiple maps. In particular, we study the obstruction to deforming the maps $f_1,...,f_k$ to be coincidence free. We construct an example of two maps $f_1,f_2:M\to T$ from a sympletic $4$-man…
Let $M$ be the moduli space of rank 3 parabolic vector bundles over a Riemann surface with several punctures. By the Mehta-Seshadri correspondence, this is the space of rank 3 unitary representations of the fundamental group of the punctured surface with specified conjugacy classes of the images of each boundary component, up to conjugation by elements of the unitary group. For each puncture we consider the torus bundle on $M$ consisting of those representations where the image of the corresponding boundary component is a fixed element of the torus. We associate line bundles to these torus bun…
We use noncommutative topology to study T-duality for principal torus bundles with H-flux. We characterize precisely when there is a "classical" T-dual, i.e., a dual bundle with dual H-flux, and when the T-dual must be "non-classical," that is, a continuous field of noncommutative tori. The duality comes with an isomorphism of twisted $K$-theories, required for matching of D-brane charges, just as in the classical case. The isomorphism of twisted cohomology which one gets in the classical case is replaced in the non-classical case by an isomorphism of twisted cyclic homology. An important part…
Let M to B, N to B be fibrations and f1,f2 :M to N be a pair of fibre-preserving maps. Using normal bordism techniques we define an invariant which is an obstruction to deforming the pair f1,f2 over B to a coincidence free pair of maps.In the special case where the two fibrations are the same and one of the maps is the identity, a weak version of our ω-invariant turns out to equal Dold's fixed point index of fibre-preserving maps. The concepts of Reidemeister classes and Nielsen coincidence classes over B are developed. As an illustration we compute e.g. the minimal number of coincidence compo…
We consider topological T-duality of torus bundles equipped with S^{1}-gerbes. We show how a geometry on the gerbe determines a reduction of its band to the subsheaf of S^{1}-valued functions which are constant along the torus fibres. We observe that such a reduction is exactly the additional datum needed for the construction of a T-dual pair. We illustrate the theory by working out the example of the canonical lifting gerbe on a compact Lie group which is a torus bundles over the associated flag manifold. It was a recent observation of Daenzer and van Erp (arXiv1211.0763) that for certain com…
The toral rank conjecture speculates that the sum of the Betti numbers of a compact manifold admitting a free action of a torus of rank $r$ is bounded from below by $2^r$. Clearly, such an action yields a torus bundle, and, more generally, the same cohomological bound is conjectured for total spaces of suitable topological torus fibrations by Félix--Oprea--Tanré. In this article we show that this generalised toral rank conjecture cannot hold by providing various different counter-examples to it (for each rank $r\geq 5$). In particular, we show that there are sequences of smooth nilpotent fibre…
Let $X$ be a paracompact space, let $G$ be a finite group acting freely on $X$ and let $H$ a cyclic subgroup of $G$ of prime order $p$. Let $f:X\rightarrow M$ be a continuous map where $M$ is a connected $m$-manifold (orientable if $p>2$) and $f^* (V_k) = 0$, for $k\geq 1$, where $V_k$ are the $Wu$ classes of $M$. Suppose that ${\rm{ind}}\, X\geq n> (|G|-r)m$, where $r=\frac{|G|}{p}$. In this work, we estimate the cohomological dimension of the set $A(f,H,G)$ of $(H,G)$-coincidence points of $f$. Also, we estimate the index of a $(H, G)$-coincidence set in the case that $H$ is a $p$-torus subg…
This paper generalizes Bismut's equivariant Chern character to the setting of abelian gerbes. In particular, associated to an abelian gerbe with connection, an equivariantly closed differential form is constructed on the space of maps of a torus into the manifold. These constructions are made explicit using a new local version of the higher Hochschild complex, resulting in differential forms given by iterated integrals. Connections to two dimensional topological field theories are indicated. Similarly, this local higher Hochschild complex is used to calculate the 2-holonomy of an abelian gerbe…
