The two-dimensional, periodic Lorentz gas, is the dynamical system corresponding with the free motion of a point particle in a planar system of fixed circular obstacles centered at the vertices of a square lattice in the Euclidian plane. Assuming elastic collisions between the particle and the obstacles, this dynamical system is studied in the Boltzmann-Grad limit, assuming that the obstacle radius $r$ and the reciprocal mean free path are asymptotically equivalent small quantities, and that the particle's distribution function is slowly varying in the space variable. In this limit, the periodic Lorentz gas cannot be described by a linear Boltzmann equation (see [F. Golse, Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse 17 (2008), 735--749]), but involves an integro-differential equation conjectured in [E. Caglioti, F. Golse, C.R. Acad. Sci. Sér. I Math. 346 (2008) 477--482] and proved in [J. Marklof, A. Strömbergsson, preprint arXiv:0801.0612], set on a phase-space larger than the usual single-particle phase-space. The main purpose of the present paper is to study the dynamical properties of this integro-differential equation: identifying its equilibrium states, proving a H Theorem and discussing the speed of approach to equilibrium in the long time limit. In the first part of the paper, we derive the explicit formula for a transition probability appearing in that equation following the method sketched in [E. Caglioti, F. Golse, loc. cit.].
We study a system of charged, noninteracting classical particles moving in a Poisson distribution of hard-disk scatterers in two dimensions, under the effect of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. We prove that, in the low-density (Boltzmann-Grad) limit, the particle distribution evolves according to a generalized linear Boltzmann equation, previously derived and solved by Bobylev et al. [4, 5, 6]. In this model, Boltzmann's chaos fails, and the kinetic equation includes non-Markovian terms. The ideas of [13] can be however adapted to prove convergence of the process with memory.
In this note, we propose a slightly different proof of Gallavotti's theorem ["Statistical Mechanics: A Short Treatise", Springer, 1999, pp. 48--55] on the derivation of the linear Boltzmann equation for the Lorentz gas with a Poisson distribution of obstacles in the Boltzmann-Grad limit.
In this work, the magnetohydrodynamics system is formally derived from two species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system. By employing the hypocoercivity of the linear Boltzmann operator and overcoming the difficulties resulting from the singular Lorentz term, we first obtain the uniform estimates of solutions with respect to the Knudsen number and then derive the magnetohydrodynamics system from the dimensionless Valsov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system.
We introduce a gradient flow formulation of linear Boltzmann equations. Under a diffusive scaling we derive a diffusion equation by using the machinery of gradient flows.
In this paper we present a rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation in a compact domain with diffuse reflection boundary conditions. We consider a system of $N$ hard spheres of diameter $ε$ in a box $Λ:= [0, 1] \times (R/Z)^2$. When a particle meets the boundary of the domain, it is instantaneously reinjected into the box with a random direction, and conserving kinetic energy. We prove that the first marginal of the process converges in the scaling $Nε^2 = 1$, $ε\rightarrow 0$ to the solution of the Boltzmann equation, with the same short time restriction of Lanford's classical theorem.
We consider an inverse problem for the Boltzmann equation on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian spacetime $(M,g)$ with an unknown metric $g$. We consider measurements done in a neighbourhood $V\subset M$ of a timelike path $μ$ that connects a point $x^-$ to a point $x^+$. The measurements are modelled by a source-to-solution map, which maps a source supported in $V$ to the restriction of the solution to the Boltzmann equation to the set $V$. We show that the source-to-solution map uniquely determines the Lorentzian spacetime, up to an isometry, in the set $I^+(x^-)\cap I^-(x^+)\subset M$. The se…
We revisit the grazing collision limit connecting the Boltzmann equation to the Landau(-Fokker-Planck) equation from their recent reinterpretations as gradient flows. Our results are in the same spirit as the $Γ$-convergence of gradient flows technique introduced by Sandier and Serfaty. In this setting, the grazing collision limit reduces to showing the lower semi-continuous convergence of the Boltzmann entropy-dissipation to the Landau entropy-dissipation.
We consider solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a potential localised at the points of a Poisson process. We prove convergence of the phase-space distribution in the annealed Boltzmann-Grad limit to a semiclassical Wigner (or defect) measure and show that it is a solution of the linear Boltzmann equation. Our results hold for a large class of square-integrable initial data associated to Wigner measures, including Langragian states, WKB states and coherent states. This extends important previous work by Eng and Erdős.
We prove in this paper the global Lorentz estimate in term of fractional-maximal function for gradient of weak solutions to a class of p-Laplace elliptic equations containing a non-negative Schrödinger potential which belongs to reverse Hölder classes. In particular, this class of p-Laplace operator includes both degenerate and non-degenerate cases. The interesting idea is to use an efficient approach based on the level-set inequality related to the distribution function in harmonic analysis.
An application of global gradient estimates in Lorentz-Morrey spaces: The existence of stationary solution to degenerate diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equations
This paper continues the development of regularity results for quasilinear measure data problems \begin{align*} \begin{cases} -\mathrm{div}(A(x,\nabla u)) &= μ\quad \text{in} \ \ Ω, \\ \quad \quad \qquad u &=0 \quad \text{on} \ \ \partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{align*} in Lorentz and Lorentz-Morrey spaces, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \ge 2$), $μ$ is a finite Radon measure on $Ω$, and $A$ is a monotone Carathéodory vector valued operator acting between $W^{1,p}_0(Ω)$ and its dual $W^{-1,p'}(Ω)$. It emphasizes that this paper studies the `very singular' case $1<p \le \frac{3n-2}{2n-1}$ and th…
