Dynamics of a coarse-grained model for the room-temperature ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, couched in the united-atom site representation are studied via molecular dynamics simulations. The dynamically heterogeneous behavior of the model resembles that of fragile supercooled liquids. At or close to room temperature, the model ionic liquid exhibits slow dynamics, characterized by nonexponential structural relaxation and subdiffusive behavior. The structural relaxation time, closely related to the viscosity, shows a super-Arrhenius behavior. Local excitations, defined as displacement of an ion exceeding a threshold distance, are found to be mainly responsible for structural relaxation in the alternating structure of cations and anions. As the temperature is lowered, excitations become progressively more correlated. This results in the decoupling of exchange and persistence times, reflecting a violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation.
Ionic liquids (ILs) are salts that are liquid close to room temperature. Their possible applications are numerous, e.g., as solvents for green chemistry in various electrochemical devices, and even for such "exotic" purposes as spinning-liquid mirrors for lunar telescopes. Here we concentrate on their use for new advancements in energy-storage and -conversion devices: Batteries, supercapacitors or fuel cells using ILs as electrolytes could be important building blocks for the sustainable energy supply of tomorrow. Interestingly, ILs show glassy freezing and the universal, but until now only po…
We investigate knotting probabilities of long double-stranded DNA strands in a coarse-grained Kratky-Porod model for DNA with Monte Carlo simulations. Various ionic conditions are implemented by adjusting the effective diameter of monomers. We find that the occurrence of knots in DNA can be reinforced considerably by high salt conditions and confinement between plates. Likewise, knots can almost be dissolved completely in a low salt scenario. Comparisons with recent experiments confirm that the coarse-grained model is able to capture and quantitatively predict topological features of DNA and c…
Local segmental relaxation properties of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) of varying molecular weight are measured by dielectric spectroscopy, and analyzed in combination the equation of state obtained from PVT measurements. The usual variation of glass transition temperature and fragility with molecular weight are observed. We also find, in accord with the general properties of glass-forming materials, that a single molecular weight dependent scaling exponent, g, is sufficient to define the mean segmental relaxation time, tau_alpha, and its distribution. This exponent can be connected to the G…
Ionic Liquids feature thermophysical properties that are of interest in solvents, energy storage materials and tenable lubrication applications. Recently, a series of coarse grained (CG) models was developed to investigate 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [C2MIM][BF4] and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [C4MIM][PF6] ionic liquids. Building on these CG models we derive force-fields to investigate the [C_{2-8}MIM] [BF4] family of ionic liquids, as a starting step for systematic investigations of lubrication under nanoconfinement conditions. The simualted equation of …
We induce and investigate the coarsening and melting dynamics of an initially static nanoparticle colloidal monolayer at an ionic liquid-vacuum interface, driven by a focused, scanning electron beam. Coarsening occurs through grain interface migration and larger-scale motions such as grain rotations, often facilitated by sliding dislocations. The progressive decrease in area fraction that drives melting of the monolayer is explained using an electrowetting model whereby particles at the interface are solvated once their accumulating charge recruits sufficient counterions to subsume the particl…
We study swelling and structural properties of ionic microgel suspensions within a comprehensive coarse-grained model that combines the polymeric and colloidal natures of microgels as permeable, compressible, charged spheres governed by effective interparticle interactions. The model synthesizes the Flory-Rehner theory of cross-linked polymer gels, the Hertz continuum theory of effective elastic interactions, and a theory of density-dependent effective electrostatic interactions. Implementing the model using Monte Carlo simulation and thermodynamic perturbation theory, we compute equilibrium p…
Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) stand out among molecular liquids for their rich physicochemical characteristics, including structural and dynamic heterogeneity. The significance of electrostatic interactions in RTILs results in long characteristic length- and timescales, and has motivated the development of a number of coarse-grained (CG) simulation models. In this study, we aim to better understand the connection between certain CG parametrization strategies and the dynamical properties and transferability of the resulting models. We systematically compare five CG models: a model larg…
Using dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, we have performed a detailed investigation of the influence of water uptake on the translational and reorientational glassy dynamics in the typical ionic liquid 1-Butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium chloride. From a careful analysis of the measured dielectric permittivity and conductivity spectra, we find a significant acceleration of cation reorientation and a marked increase of the ionic conductivity for higher water contents. The latter effect mainly arises due to a strong impact of water content on the glass temperature, which for…
Ionic liquids are promising candidates for electrolytes in energy-storage systems. We demonstrate that mixing two ionic liquids allows to precisely tune their physical properties, like the dc conductivity. Moreover, these mixtures enable the gradual modification of the fragility parameter, which is believed to be a measure of the complexity of the energy landscape in supercooled liquids. The physical origin of this index is still under debate; therefore, mixing ionic liquids can provide further insights. From the chemical point of view, tuning ionic liquids via mixing is an easy and thus an ec…
We report a thorough characterization of the dielectric relaxation behavior and the ionic conductivity in the plastic-crystalline mixture of 60% succinonitrile and 40% glutaronitrile. The plastic phase can be easily supercooled and the relaxational behavior is investigated by broadband dielectric spectroscopy in the liquid, plastic crystalline, and glassy crystal phases. The very pronounced alpha-relaxation found in the spectra is characterized in detail. From the temperature dependence of the alpha-relaxation time, a fragility parameter of 62 was determined making this material one of the mos…
A recently published analytical model, describing and predicting elasticity, viscosity, and fragility of metallic melts, is applied for the analysis of about 30 nonmetallic glassy systems, ranging from oxide network glasses to alcohols, low-molecular-weight liquids, polymers, plastic crystals, and even ionic glass formers. The model is based on the power-law exponent lambda representing the steepness parameter of the repulsive part of the inter-atomic or -molecular potential and the thermal-expansion parameter alpha_T determined by the attractive anharmonic part of the effective interaction. I…
We study ionic liquids interacting with electrified interfaces. The ionic fluid is modeled as a Coulomb lattice gas. We compare the ionic density profiles calculated using a popular modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation with the explicit Monte Carlo simulations. The modified Poisson-Boltzmann theory fails to capture the structural features of the double layer and is also unable to correctly predict the ionic density at the electrified interface. The lattice Monte Carlo simulations qualitatively capture the coarse-grained structure of the double layer in the continuum. We propose a convolution re…
A gap in understanding the link between continuum theories of ion transport in ionic liquids and the underlying microscopic dynamics has hindered the development of frameworks for transport phenomena in these concentrated electrolytes. Here, we construct a continuum theory for ion transport in ionic liquids by coarse graining a simple exclusion process of interacting particles on a lattice. The resulting dynamical equations can be written as a gradient flow with a mobility matrix that vanishes at high densities. This form of the mobility matrix gives rise to a charging behaviour that is differ…
Fragility is an empirical property that describes how abruptly a glass-forming material solidifies upon supercooling. The degree of fragility carries important implications for the functionality and processability of a material, as well as for our fundamental understanding of the glass transition. However, the microstructural properties underlying fragility still remain poorly understood. Here, we explain the microstructure-fragility link in vitrimeric networks, a novel type of high-performance polymers with unique bond-swapping functionality and unusual glass-forming behavior. Our results are…
As typical complex liquids, ionic liquids (ILs) exhibit phases beyond the description of simple liquid theories. In particular, with an intermediate cationic side-chain length, ILs can form the nanoscale segregated liquid (NSL) phase, which will eventually transform into the ionic liquid crystal (ILC) phase when the side chains are adequately long. However, the microscopic mechanism of this transformation is still unclear. In this work, by means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation, we show that, with increasing cationic side-chain length, some local pieces of non-polar domains are …
Lithium-salt-based deep eutectic solvents, where the only cation is Li+, are promising candidates as electrolytes in electrochemical energy-storage devices like batteries. We have performed broadband dielectric spectroscopy on three such systems, covering a broad temperature and dynamic range that extends from the low-viscosity liquid around room temperature down to the glassy state approaching the glass-transition temperature. We detect a relaxational process that can be ascribed to dipolar reorientational dynamics and exhibits the clear signatures of glassy freezing. We find that the tempera…
We present a molecular dynamics study of the effects of confinement on the lubrication and flow properties of ionic liquids. We use a coarse-grained salt model description of ionic liquid as a lubricant confined between finite solid plates and subjected to two dynamic regimes: shear and cyclic loading. The impact of confinement on the ion arrangement and mechanical response of the system has been studied in detail and compared to static and bulk properties. The results have revealed that the wall slip has a profound influence on the force built--up as a response to mechanical deformation and t…
Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations and a coarse grained model of ionic liquids, we have investigated the impact that the shape and the intramolecular charge distribution of the ions have on the electrotuneable friction with ionic-liquid nanoscale films. We show that the electric-field induces significant structural changes in the film, leading to dramatic modifications of the friction force. Comparison of the present work with previous studies using different models of ionic liquids indicate that the phenomenology presented here applies to a wide range of ionic liquids. In pa…
In the current work we present a new modelling approach for simulating meso-scopic phenomena related to lubrication of the piston ring-cylinder liner contact. Our geometry allows a variable confinement gap and a varying amount of lubricant in the gap, while avoiding the squeeze-out of the lubricant into vacuum. We have implemented a coarse grain molecular dynamics description of an ionic liquid as a lubricant which can expand into lateral reservoirs. The results have revealed two regimes of lubrication, an elasto-hydrodynamic one under low loads and one with low, velocity-independent specific …
We present a thermodynamically robust coarse-grained model to simulate folding of RNA in monovalent salt solutions. The model includes stacking, hydrogen bond and electrostatic interactions as fundamental components in describing the stability of RNA structures. The stacking interactions are parametrized using a set of nucleotide-specific parameters, which were calibrated against the thermodynamic measurements for single-base stacks and base-pair stacks. All hydrogen bonds are assumed to have the same strength, regardless of their context in the RNA structure. The ionic buffer is modeled impli…
The aggregation of clay particles in aqueous solution is a ubiquitous everyday process of broad environmental and technological importance. However, it is poorly understood at the all-important atomistic level since it depends on a complex and dynamic interplay of solvent-mediated electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding, and dispersion interactions. With this in mind we have performed an extensive set of classical molecular dynamics simulations (included enhanced sampling simulations) on the interactions between model kaolinite nanoparticles in pure and salty water. Our simulations reveal highly aniso…
We numerically investigate the dynamic heterogeneity and its length scale found in the coarse-grained ionic liquid model systems. In our ionic liquid model systems, cations are modeled as dimers with positive charge, while anions are modeled as monomers with negative charge, respectively. To study the effect of the charge distributions on the cations, two ionic liquid models with different charge distributions are used and the model with neutral charge is also considered as a counterpart. To reveal the heterogeneous dynamics in the model systems, we examine spatial distributions of displacemen…
In this paper we explore the validity of the Rosenfeld and the Dzugutov relation for the Lennard-Jones (LJ) system, its repulsive counterpart, the WCA system and a network forming liquid, the NTW model. We find that for all the systems both the relations are valid at high temperature regime with an universal exponent close to 0.8. Similar to that observed for the simple liquids, the LJ and the WCA systems show a breakdown of the scaling laws at the low temperature regime. However for the NTW model, which is a simple liquid, these scaling laws are valid even at lower temperature regime similar …
Electrical charging of parallel plates confining a model ionic liquid down to nanoscale distances yields a variety of charge-induced changes in the structural features of the confined film. That includes even-odd switching of the structural layering and charging-induced solidification and melting, with important changes of local ordering between and within layers, and of squeezout behavior. By means of molecular dynamics simulations, we explore this variety of phenomena in the simplest charged Lennard-Jones coarse-grained model including or excluding the effect a neutral tail giving an anisotr…
The flexibility in the structure of calmodulin (CaM) allows its binding to over 300 target proteins in the cell. To investigate the structure-function relationship of CaM, we combined methods of computer simulation and experiments based on circular dichroism (CD) to investigate the structural characteristics of CaM that influence its target recognition in crowded cell-like conditions. We developed a unique multiscale solution of charges computed from quantum chemistry, together with protein reconstruction, coarse-grained molecular simulations, and statistical physics, to represent the charge d…
Among other improvements, the Martini 3 coarse-grained force field provides a more accurate description of the solvation of protein pockets and channels through the consistent use of various bead types and sizes. Here, we show that the representation of Na$^+$ and Cl$^-$ ions as "tiny" (TQ5) beads limits the accessible time step to 25 fs. By contrast, with Martini 2, time steps of 30-40 fs were possible for lipid bilayer systems without proteins. This limitation is relevant for, e.g., phase separating lipid mixtures that require long equilibration times. We derive a quantitative kinetic model …
We present a new method for calculating internal forces in DNA structures using coarse-grained models and demonstrate its utility with the oxDNA model. The instantaneous forces on individual nucleotides are explored and related to model potentials, and using our framework, internal forces are calculated for two simple DNA systems and for a recently-published nanoscopic force clamp. Our results highlight some pitfalls associated with conventional methods for estimating internal forces, which are based on elastic polymer models, and emphasise the importance of carefully considering secondary str…
