We provide sharp lower and upper bounds for the Gelfand widths of $\ell_p$-balls in the $N$-dimensional $\ell_q^N$-space for $0<p\leq 1$ and $p<q \leq 2$. Such estimates are highly relevant to the novel theory of compressive sensing, and our proofs rely on methods from this area.
We consider the problem of determining the asymptotic order of the Gelfand numbers of mixed-(quasi-)norm embeddings $\ell^b_p(\ell^d_q) \hookrightarrow \ell^b_r(\ell^d_u)$ given that $p \leq r$ and $q \leq u$, with emphasis on cases with $p\leq 1$ and/or $q\leq 1$. These cases turn out to be related to structured sparsity. We obtain sharp bounds in a number of interesting parameter constellations. Our new matching bounds for the Gelfand numbers of the embeddings of $\ell_1^b(\ell_2^d)$ and $\ell_2^b(\ell_1^d)$ into $\ell_2^b(\ell_2^d)$ imply optimality assertions for the recovery of block-spar…
Let $(G,K)$ be a Gelfand pair, with $G$ a Lie group of polynomial growth, and let $Σ\subset{\mathbb R}^\ell$ be a homeomorphic image of the Gelfand spectrum, obtained by choosing a generating system $D_1,\dots,D_\ell$ of $G$-invariant differential operators on $G/K$ and associating to a bounded spherical function $φ$ the $\ell$-tuple of its eigenvalues under the action of the $D_j$'s. We say that property (S) holds for $(G,K)$ if the spherical transform maps the bi-$K$-invariant Schwartz space ${\mathcal S}(K\backslash G/K)$ isomorphically onto ${\mathcal S}(Σ)$, the space of restrictions to $…
Let $0<p,q\leq \infty$ and denote by $\mathcal{S}_p^N$ and $\mathcal{S}_q^N$ the corresponding Schatten classes of real $N\times N$ matrices. We study the Gelfand numbers of natural identities $\mathcal{S}_p^N\hookrightarrow \mathcal{S}_q^N$ between Schatten classes and prove asymptotically sharp bounds up to constants only depending on $p$ and $q$. This extends classical results for finite-dimensional $\ell_p$ sequence spaces by E. Gluskin to the non-commutative setting and complements bounds previously obtained by B. Carl and A. Defant, A. Hinrichs and C. Michels, and J. Chávez-Domínguez and…
In this article, we prove the proximinality of closed unit ball of $M$-ideals of compact operators. We also prove the ball proximinality of $M$-embedded spaces in their biduals. Moreover, we show that $\mathcal{K}(\ell_1)$, the space of compact operators on $\ell_1$, is ball proximinal in $\mathcal{B}(\ell_1)$, the space of bounded operators on $\ell_1$, even though $\mathcal{K}(\ell_1)$ is not an $M$-ideal in $\mathcal{B}(\ell_1)$.
Non-expansive bijections to the unit ball of $\ell_1$-sum of strictly convex Banach spaces
扩展Cascales,Kadets,Orihuela and Wingler(2016),Kadets and Zavarzina(2017),and Zavarzina(2017)最近的结果,我们证明了对于每个Banach空间$X$和严格凸巴拿赫空间的每个集合$Z_i, i\in I$,从$X$的单位球到$Z_i$由$\ell_1$求和的单位球的每个非扩张双射是等距的。
We show that the two-dimensional minimum-volume central section of the $n$-dimensional cross-polytope is attained by the regular $2n$-gon. We establish stability-type results for hyperplane sections of $\ell_p$-balls in all the cases where the extremisers are known. Our methods are mainly probabilistic, exploring connections between negative moments of projections of random vectors uniformly distributed on convex bodies and volume of their sections.
In 1989, G. Godefroy proved that a Banach space contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if it can be equivalently renormed to be octahedral. It is known that octahedral norms can be characterized by means of covering the unit sphere by a finite number of balls. This observation allows us to connect the theory of octahedral norms with ball-covering properties of Banach spaces introduced by L. Cheng in 2006. Following this idea, we extend G. Godefroy's result to higher cardinalities. We prove that, for an infinite cardinal $κ$, a Banach space $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_…
In this article we prove three fundamental types of limit theorems for the $q$-norm of random vectors chosen at random in an $\ell_p^n$-ball in high dimensions. We obtain a central limit theorem, a moderate deviations as well as a large deviations principle when the underlying distribution of the random vectors belongs to a general class introduced by Barthe, Guédon, Mendelson, and Naor. It includes the normalized volume and the cone probability measure as well as projections of these measures as special cases. Two new applications to random and non-random projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls to lo…
In this work we study the rate of convergence in the central limit theorem for the Euclidean norm of random orthogonal projections of vectors chosen at random from an $\ell_p^n$-ball which has been obtained in [Alonso-Gutiérrez, Prochno, Thäle: Gaussian fluctuations for high-dimensional random projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls, Bernoulli 25(4A), 2019, 3139--3174]. More precisely, for any $n\in\mathbb N$ let $E_n$ be a random subspace of dimension $k_n\in\{1,\ldots,n\}$, $P_{E_n}$ the orthogonal projection onto $E_n$, and $X_n$ be a random point in the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$. We prove a Berry-Es…
In this paper, we study high-dimensional random projections of $\ell_p^n$-balls. More precisely, for any $n\in\mathbb N$ let $E_n$ be a random subspace of dimension $k_n\in\{1,\ldots,n\}$ and $X_n$ be a random point in the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$. Our work provides a description of the Gaussian fluctuations of the Euclidean norm $\|P_{E_n}X_n\|_2$ of random orthogonal projections of $X_n$ onto $E_n$. In particular, under the condition that $k_n\to\infty$ it is shown that these random variables satisfy a central limit theorem, as the space dimension $n$ tends to infinity. Moreover, if $k_n\to\i…
We establish Central Limit Theorems for the volumes of intersections of $B_{p}^n$ (the unit ball of $\ell_p^n$) with uniform random subspaces of codimension $d$ for fixed $d$ and $n\to \infty$. As a corollary we obtain higher order approximations for expected volumes, refining previous results by Koldobsky and Lifschitz and approximations obtained from the Eldan--Klartag version of CLT for convex bodies. We also obtain a Central Limit Theorem for the Minkowski functional of the intersection body of $B_p^n$, evaluated on a random vector distributed uniformly on the unit sphere.
We study the embedding $\text{id}: \ell_p^b(\ell_q^d) \to \ell_r^b(\ell_u^d)$ and prove matching bounds for the entropy numbers $e_k(\text{id})$ provided that $0<p<r\leq \infty$ and $0<q\leq u\leq \infty$. Based on this finding, we establish optimal dimension-free asymptotic rates for the entropy numbers of embeddings of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces of small dominating mixed smoothness which settles an open question in the literature. Both results rely on a novel covering construction recently found by Edmunds and Netrusov.

We study the precise asymptotic volume of balls in Orlicz spaces and show that the volume of the intersection of two Orlicz balls undergoes a phase transition when the dimension of the ambient space tends to infinity. This generalizes a result of Schechtman and Schmuckenschläger [GAFA, Lecture notes in Math. 1469 (1991), 174--178] for $\ell_p^d$-balls. As another application, we determine the precise asymptotic volume ratio for $2$-concave Orlicz spaces $\ell_M^d$. Our method rests on ideas from statistical mechanics and large deviations theory, more precisely the maximum entropy or Gibbs prin…
We study volumes of sections of convex origin-symmetric bodies in $\mathbb{R}% ^{n}$ induced by orthonormal systems on probability spaces. The approach is based on volume estimates of \ John-Löwner ellipsoids and expectations of norms induced by the respective systems. The estimates obtained allows us to establish lower bounds for the radii of sections which gives lower bounds for Gelfand widths (or linear cowidths). As an application we offer a new method of evaluation of Gelfand and Kolmogorov widths of multiplier operators. In particular, we establish sharp orders of widths of standard Sobo…
For a compact Hausdorff space $S$, we prove that the closed unit ball of a closed linear subalgebra of the space of real-valued continuous functions on $S$, denoted by $C(S)$, satisfies property-$(P_1)$ (the set-valued generalization of strong proximinality) for the non-empty closed bounded subsets of the bidual of $C(S)$. Various stability results related to property-$(P_1)$ and semi-continuity properties of restricted Chebyshev-center maps are also established. As a consequence, we derive that if $Y$ is a proximinal finite co-dimensional subspace of $c_0$ then the closed unit ball of $Y$ sat…
We establish that the Volterra-type integral operator $J_b$ on the Hardy spaces $H^p$ of the unit ball $\mathbb{B}_n$ exhibits a rather strong rigid behavior. More precisely, we show that the compactness, strict singularity and $\ell^p$-singularity of $J_b$ are equivalent on $H^p$ for any $1 \le p < \infty$. Moreover, we show that the operator $J_b$ acting on $H^p$ cannot fix an isomorphic copy of $\ell^2$ when $p \ne 2.$
We study the spectrum $M_b(U)$ of the algebra of bounded type holomorphic functions on a complete Reinhardt domain in a symmetrically regular Banach space $E$ as an analytic manifold over the bidual of the space. In the case that $U$ is the unit ball of $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty$, we prove that each connected component of $M_b(B_{\ell_p})$ naturally identifies with a ball of a certain radius. We also provide estimates for this radius and in many natural cases we have the precise value. As a consequence, we obtain that for connected components different from that of evaluations, these radii are str…
We prove that Banach spaces $\ell_1\oplus_2\mathbb{R}$ and $X\oplus_\infty Y$, with strictly convex $X$ and $Y$, have plastic unit balls (we call a metric space plastic if every non-expansive bijection from this space onto itself is an isometry).
