Approximately one year ago Horava proposed a power-counting renormalizable theory of gravity which abandons local Lorentz invariance. The proposal has been received with growing interest and resulted in various different versions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity theories, involving a colourful potpourri of new terminology. In this proceedings contribution we first motivate and briefly overview the various different approaches, clarifying their differences and similarities. We then focus on a model referred to as projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity and summarize the key results regarding its viability.
We consider a way of eliminating the unwanted scalar graviton from Horava-Lifshitz gravity. That is achieved via introduction of certain additional constraints. We perform canonical analysis of both projectable and non-projectable versions of the theory. We obtain the structure of constraints in each case, and analyze its dependence on the values of the coupling constants involved in the additional constraints. In the non-projectable theory, the scalar graviton is absent when the coupling constants have certain values, while for other values the scalar graviton appears. The projectable theory …
In this paper, we study static post-Newtonian limits in non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry. After obtaining all static spherical solutions in the infrared, we apply them to the solar system tests, and obtain the Eddington-Robertson-Schiff parameters in terms of the coupling constants of the theory. These parameters are well consistent with observations for the physically viable coupling constants. In contrast to the projectable case, this consistence is achieved without taking the gauge field and Newtonian prepotential as part of the metric.
The occurrence of a bounce in the FRW cosmology requires modifications of General Relativity. An example of such a modification is the recently proposed Horava-Lifshitz theory of gravity, which includes a "dark radiation" term with a negative coefficient in the analog of the Friedmann equation. A modification of the HL gravity, relaxing the "detailed balance" condition, brings additional terms to the equations of motion, corresponding to stiff matter. This paper presents comparison of the phase structure of the original and modified Horava cosmology. Special attention is paid to the analysis o…
We consider linear perturbations about a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological background in the projectable version of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. Starting from the action for cosmological perturbations, we identify the canonically normalized fluctuation variables. We find that - in contrast to what happens in the non-projectable version of the theory - the extra scalar cosmological perturbation mode is already dynamical at the level of linear perturbations. For values of the parameter $λ$ in the range $1/3 < λ< 1$, the extra mode is ghost-like, for values $1 < λ$ and $λ< 1/3$ it is tachyonic. …
Slowly rotating black holes in the non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory were studied recently in Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 109}, 181101 (2012), and claimed that they do not exist. In this Comment, we show that this is incorrect, and such solutions indeed exist in the IR limit of the non-projectable HL theory.
We study a version of the recently proposed modified $F(R)$ Hořava-Lifshitz gravity that abandons the projectability condition of the lapse variable. We discovered that the projectable version of this theory has a consistent Hamiltonian structure, and that the theory has interesting cosmological solutions which can describe the eras of accelerated expansion of the universe in a unified manner. The usual Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is a special case of our theory. Hamiltonian analysis of the non-projectable theory, however, shows that this theory has serious problems. These problems are compared wi…

The quantization of two-dimensional Hořava theory of gravity without the projectability condition is considered. Our study of the Hamiltonian structure of the theory shows that there are two first-class and two second-class constraints. Then, following Dirac we quantize the theory by first requiring that the two second-class constraints be strongly equal to zero. This is carried out by replacing the Poisson bracket by the Dirac bracket. The two first-class constraints give rise to the Wheeler-DeWitt equations, which yield uniquely a plane-wave solution for the wavefunction. We also study the c…
We consider Horava gravity coupled to Maxwell and higher derivative magnetic terms. We construct static spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the low-energy approximation. We calculate the horizon locations and temperatures in the near-extremal limit, for asymptotically flat and (anti-)de Sitter spaces. We also construct a detailed balanced version of the theory, for which we find projectable and non-projectable, non-perturbative solutions.
Both projectable and non-projectable versions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity face serious challenges. In the non-projectable version, the constraint algebra is seemingly inconsistent. The projectable version lacks a local Hamiltonian constraint, thus allowing for an extra scalar mode which can be problematic. A new formulation of non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity, naturally realized as a representation of the master constraint algebra studied by loop quantum gravity researchers, is presented. This yields a consistent canonical theory with first class constraints. It captures the essence of H…
Hořava--Lifshitz gravity has covariance only under the foliation-preserving diffeomorphism. This implies that the quantities on the constant-time hypersurfaces should be regular. In the original theory, the projectability condition, which strongly restricts the lapse function, is proposed. We assume that a star is filled with a perfect fluid with no-radial motion and that it has reflection symmetry about the equatorial plane. As a result, we find a no-go theorem for stationary and axisymmetric star solutions in projectable Hořava--Lifshitz gravity under the physically reasonable assumptions in…

We find stable singularity-free cosmological solutions in non-flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime in the context of Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. Although we encounter the negative squared effective masses of the scalar perturbations in the original HL theory, the behaviors can be remedied by relaxing the projectability condition. In our analysis, the effects from the background dynamics are taken into account as well as the sign of the coefficients in the quadratic action for perturbations. More specifically, we give further classification of the gradient stability/instab…
We use the Wetterich equation for foliated spacetimes to study the RG flow of projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity coupled to n Lifshitz scalars. Using novel results for anisotropic heat kernels, the matter-induced beta functions for the gravitational couplings are computed explicitly. The RG flow exhibits an UV attractive anisotropic Gaussian fixed point where Newton's constant vanishes and the extra scalar mode decouples. This fixed point ensures that the theory is asymptotically free in the large-n expansion, indicating that projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity is perturbatively renormalizabl…
In this paper we formulate RFDiff invariant f(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity and we show that it is related to the ghost condensation in the projectable version of Horava-Lifshitz gravity.
The Hamiltonian formulation of the lowest-order projectable Horava gravity, namely the so-called $λ$-$R$ gravity, is studied. Since a preferred foliation has been chosen in projectable Horava gravity, there is no local Hamiltonian constraint in the theory. In contrast to general relativity, the constraint algebra of $λ$-$R$ gravity forms a Lie algebra. By canonical transformations, we further obtain the connection-dynamical formalism of the $λ$-R gravity theories with real $su(2)$-connections as configuration variables. This formalism enables us to extend the scheme of non-perturbative loop qu…
A lattice regularization for the $2$d projectable Horava-Lifshitz (HL) quantum gravity is known to be the $2$d causal dynamical triangulations (CDT), and the $2$d CDT can be generalized so as to include all possible genus contributions non-perturbatively. We show that in the context of HL gravity, effects coming from such a non-perturbative sum over topologies can be successfully taken into account, if we quantize the $2$d projectable HL gravity with a simple bi-local wormhole interaction. This conference paper is based on the article, Phys. Lett. B 816 (2021), 136205.
We consider Horava-Lifshitz gravity in both 1+1 and 2+1 dimensions. These lower-dimensional versions of Horava-Lifshitz gravity are simple enough to be explicitly tractable, but still complex enough to be interesting. We write the most general (non-projectable) action for each case and discuss the resulting dynamics. In the 1+1 case we utilize the equivalence with 2-dimensional Einstein-aether theory to argue that, even though non-trivial, the theory does not have any local degrees of freedom. In the 2+1 case we show that the only dynamical degree of freedom is a scalar, which qualitatively ha…
We prove perturbative renormalizability of projectable Horava gravity. The key element of the argument is the choice of a gauge which ensures the correct anisotropic scaling of the propagators and their uniform falloff at large frequencies and momenta. This guarantees that the counterterms required to absorb the loop divergences are local and marginal or relevant with respect to the anisotropic scaling. Gauge invariance of the counterterms is achieved by making use of the background-covariant formalism. We also comment on the difficulties of this approach when addressing the renormalizability …
A recent paper studies a modification of Einstein-aether theory in which the aether vector is restricted, at the level of the action, to be the gradient of a scalar. In this comment we note that this scalar version of Einstein-aether theory is equivalent to the projectable version of the IR limit of Hořava gravity when the potential for the scalar is constant. This provides a generally covariant formulation for projectable Hořava gravity.
We analyze different claims on the role of the coupling constant lambda in so-called lambda-R models, a minimal generalization of general relativity inspired by Horava-Lifshitz gravity. The dimensionless parameter lambda appears in the kinetic term of the Einstein-Hilbert action, leading to a one-parameter family of classical theories. Performing a canonical constraint analysis for closed spatial hypersurfaces, we obtain a result analogous to that of Bellorin and Restuccia, who showed that all non-projectable lambda-R models are equivalent to general relativity in the asymptotically flat case.…
We show that certain three-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz gravity theories can be written as Chern-Simons gauge theories on various non-relativistic algebras. The algebras are specific extensions of the Bargmann, Newton-Hooke and Schroedinger algebra each of which has the Galilean algebra as a subalgebra. To show this we employ the fact that Horava-Lifshitz gravity corresponds to dynamical Newton-Cartan geometry. In particular, the extended Bargmann (Newton-Hooke) Chern-Simons theory corresponds to projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity with a local U(1) gauge symmetry without (with) a cosmological …
We perform the BFV quantization of the 2+1 projectable and the 3+1 nonprojectable versions of the Horava theory. This is a Hamiltonian formalism, and noncanonical gauges can be used with it. In the projectable case, we show that the integration on canonical momenta reproduces the quantum Lagrangian known from the proof of renormalization of Barvinsky et al. This quantum Lagrangian is nonlocal, its nonlocality originally arose as a consequence of getting regular propagators. The matching of the BFV quantization with the quantum Lagrangian reinforces the program of quantization of the Horava the…
We quantize the two-dimensional projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity with a bi-local as well as space-like wormhole interaction. The resulting quantum Hamiltonian coincides with the one obtained through summing over all genus in the string field theory for two-dimensional causal dynamical triangulations. This implies that our wormhole interaction can be interpreted as a splitting or joining interaction of one-dimensional strings.
We study quantum corrections to projectable Horava gravity with $z = 2$ scaling in 2+1 dimensions. Using the background field method, we utilize a non-singular gauge to compute the anomalous dimension of the cosmological constant at one loop, in a normalization adapted to the spatial curvature term.
Recently it has been established that torsional Newton-Cartan (TNC) geometry is the appropriate geometrical framework to which non-relativistic field theories couple. We show that when these geometries are made dynamical they give rise to Horava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity. Projectable HL gravity corresponds to dynamical Newton-Cartan (NC) geometry without torsion and non-projectable HL gravity corresponds to dynamical NC geometry with twistless torsion (hypersurface orthogonal foliation). We build a precise dictionary relating all fields (including the scalar khronon), their transformations and oth…
In this paper we have considered the structure of the non-projectable Horava-Melby-Thompson (HMT) gravity to find braneworld scenarios. A relativistic scalar field is considered in the matter sector and we have shown how to reduce the equations of motion to first-order differential equations. In particular, we have studied thick brane solutions of both the dilatonic and Randall-Sundrum types.
We derive the projectable version of Horava - Lifshitz gravity from the localisation of the Galilean symmetry. Specifically we provide a dynamical construction of the metric, from first principles, that reproduces the transformations of the physical variables - lapse, shift and spatial component of the metric. Also, the measure defining the action is reproduced. The geometrical basis of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity is thereby revealed which also elucidates its difference from the Newton-Cartan geometry - the spacetime of Newtonian gravity. The connection of Newton's gravity with Horava-Lifshitz…
In this paper we address the issue of black hole solutions in (1+1)-dimensional non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We consider several models by considering different potentials in the scalar matter sector. We also consider the gravitational collapse of a distribution of pressureless dust filling a region in one-dimensional space. The time of the collapse can be faster or slower depending on the parameter $λ$ of the theory.
Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) is a lattice theory where aspects of quantum gravity can be studied. Two-dimensional CDT can be solved analytically and the continuum (quantum) Hamiltonian obtained. In this article we show that this continuum Hamiltonian is the one obtained by quantizing two-dimensional projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity.
Using the multiplicity of solutions for the projectable case of the covariant extension of Horava-Lifshitz Gravity, we show that an appropriate choice for the auxiliary field allows for an effective description of galaxy rotation curves. This description is based on static and spherically symmetric solutions of covariant Horava-Lifshitz Gravity and does not require Dark Matter.
In this paper, we first propose a universal coupling between the gravity and matter in the framework of the Hořava-Lifshitz theory of gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry for both the projectable and non-projectable cases. Then, using this universal coupling we study the post-Newtonian approximations and obtain the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameters in terms of the coupling constants of the theory. Contrary to the previous works in which only two PPN parameters were calculated, we obtain {\it all} PPN parameters. We then, for the first time in either projectable or non-projectable ca…
We compute the $β$-functions of marginal couplings in projectable Hořava gravity in $2+1$ spacetime dimensions. We show that the renormalization group flow has an asymptotically-free fixed point in the ultraviolet (UV), establishing the theory as a UV-complete model with dynamical gravitational degrees of freedom. Therefore, this theory may serve as a toy-model to study fundamental aspects of quantum gravity. Our results represent a step forward towards understanding the UV properties of realistic versions of Hořava gravity.
We review the effective field theory of modified gravity in which the Lagrangian involves three dimensional geometric quantities appearing in the 3+1 decomposition of space-time. On the flat isotropic cosmological background we expand a general action up to second order in the perturbations of geometric scalars, by taking into account spatial derivatives higher than two. Our analysis covers a wide range of gravitational theories-- including Horndeski theory/its recent generalizations and the projectable/non-projectable versions of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. We derive the equations of motion for …
Non-projectable Hořava gravity for a spherically symmetric configuration with $λ=1$ exhibits an infinite set of solutions parametrized by a generic function $g^{2}(r)$ for the radial component of the shift vector. In the IR limit the infinite set of solutions corresponds to the invariance of General Relativity under a spacetime reparametrization. In general, not being a coordinate transformation, the symmetry in the action responsible for the infinite set of solutions does not have a clear physical interpretation. Indeed it is broken by the matter term in the action. We study the behavior of t…
The most general spherically symmetric solution with zero shift is found in the non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz class of theories with general coupling constants. It contains as special cases, spherically symmetric solutions found by other authors earlier. It is found that the generic solution has conventional (AdS, dS or flat) asymptotics with a universal 1/r tail. There are several special cases where the asymptotics differ, including the detailed balance choice of couplings. The conventional thermodynamics of this general class of solutions is established by calculating the energy, temperat…
In the context of Horava gravity, the most promising known scenarios to recover Lorentz invariance at low energy are the possibilities that (1) the renormalization group flow of the system leads to emergent infrared Lorentz invariance, and (2) that supersymmetry protects infrared Lorentz invariance. A third scenario proposes that a classically Lorentz invariant matter sector with controlled quantum corrections may simply co-exist with Horava gravity under certain conditions. However, for non-projectable Horava gravity in 3+1 dimensions it is known that, in the absence of additional structures,…
We consider the branch of the projectable Horava-Lifshitz model which exhibits ghost instabilities in the low energy limit. It turns out that, due to the Lorentz violating structure of the model and to the presence of a finite strong coupling scale, the vacuum decay rate into photons is tiny in a wide range of phenomenologically acceptable parameters. The strong coupling scale, understood as a cutoff on ghosts' spatial momenta, can be raised up to $Λ\sim 10$ TeV. At lower momenta, the projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity is equivalent to General Relativity supplemented by a fluid with a small p…
In this paper, we study a projectable Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology without the detailed balance condition minimally coupled to a non-linear self-coupling scalar field. In the minisuperspace framework, the super Hamiltonian of the presented model is constructed by means of which, some classical solutions for scale factor and scalar field are obtained. Since these solutions exhibit various types of singularities, we came up with the quantization of the model in the context of the Wheeler-DeWitt approach of quantum cosmology. The resulting quantum wave functions are then used to investigate the poss…
We consider the role of matter in the non-projectable version of Horava-Liftshitz gravity at both a classical and a quantum level. At the classical level, we construct general forms of matter Lagrangians consistent with the reduced symmetry group and demonstrate that they must be reduced to their relativistic form if they are to avoid sourcing the gravitational Stuckelberg field. At the quantum level we consider one loop corrections to the propagator for a relativistic scalar minimally coupled to gravity at tree level. We find large corrections to the light cone at low energies arising from th…
We extend the discrete Regge action of causal dynamical triangulations to include discrete versions of the curvature squared terms appearing in the continuum action of (2+1)-dimensional projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity. Focusing on an ensemble of spacetimes whose spacelike hypersurfaces are 2-spheres, we employ Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations to study the path integral defined by this extended discrete action. We demonstrate the existence of known and novel macroscopic phases of spacetime geometry, and we present preliminary evidence for the consistency of these phases with solutions t…
We study stability of singularity-free cosmological solutions with positive cosmological constant based on projectable Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. In HL theory, the isotropic and homogeneous cosmological solutions with bounce can be realized if spacial curvature is non-zero. By performing perturbation analysis around non-flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetime, we derive a quadratic action and discuss the stability, i.e, ghost and tachyon-free conditions. Although the squared effective mass of scalar perturbation must be negative in infrared regime, we can avoid tachyon inst…
In the framework of the power-counting renormalizable theory of gravitation, recently proposed by Hořava, we study the limit $λ\to\infty$, which is arguably the most natural candidate for the ultraviolet fixed point of the renormalization group flow. In the projectable version with dynamical critical exponent $z=3$, we analyze the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background driven by the so-called "dark matter as integration constant" and perturbations around it. We show that amplitudes of quantum fluctuations for both scalar and tensor gravitons remain finite in the limit and that the theory is wea…
We investigate the Hamiltonian structure of linearized extended Hořava- Lifshitz gravity in a flat cosmological background following the Faddeev-Jackiw's Hamiltonian reduction formalism. The Hamiltonian structure of extended Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is similar to that of the projectable version of original Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, in which there is one primary constraint and so there are two physical degrees of freedom. We also find that extra scalar graviton mode in an inflationary background can be decoupled from the matter field in the infrared (IR) limit, but it is coupled to the matter fie…
Stationary, axisymmetric and slowly rotating vacuum spacetimes in the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity are studied, and shown that, for any given spherical static vacuum solution of the HL theory (of any model, including the ones with an additional U(1) symmetry), there always exists a corresponding slowly rotating, stationary and axisymmetric vacuum solution, which reduces to the former, when the rotation is switched off. The rotation is universal and only implicitly depends on the models of the HL theory and their coupling constants through the spherical seed solution. As a result, all asymptoti…
Horava's proposal for non-relativistic quantum gravity introduces a preferred time foliation of space-time which violates the local Lorentz invariance. The foliation is encoded in a dynamical scalar field which we call `khronon'. The dynamics of the khronon field is sensitive to the symmetries and other details of the particular implementations of the proposal. In this paper we examine several consistency issues present in three non-relativistic gravity theories: Horava's projectable theory, the healthy non-projectable extension, and a new extension related to ghost condensation. We find that …
We investigate the linear cosmological perturbations in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with a scalar field. Starting from the most general expressions of the metric perturbations as well as that of a canonical scalar field, we decompose the scalar, vector and tensor parts of the perturbed action. By reducing the Hamiltonian, we find that there are two independent degrees of freedom for the tensor perturbations while none for the vector perturbations. For the scalar perturbations, the remaining number of degrees of freedom, which are all gauge invariant, depends on whether the projectable condition is…
In this paper, we investigate the scalar quasinormal modes of Hořava-Lifshitz theory with $U(1)$ symmetry in static Anti-de Sitter spacetime. The static planar and spherical black hole solutions in lower energy limit are derived in non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. The equation of motion of a scalar field is obtained, and is utilized to study the quasinormal modes of massless scalar particles. We find that the effect of Hořava-Lifshitz correction is to increase the quasinormal period as well as to slow down the decay of the oscillation magnitude. Besides, the scalar field could be unsta…
Horava gravity is a proposal for completing general relativity in the ultraviolet by interactions that violate Lorentz invariance at very high energies. We focus on (2+1)-dimensional projectable Horava gravity, a theory which is renormalizable and perturbatively ultraviolet-complete, enjoying an asymptotically free ultraviolet fixed point. Adding a small cosmological constant to regulate the long distance behavior of the metric, we search for all circularly symmetric stationary vacuum solutions with vanishing angular momentum and approaching the de Sitter metric with a possible angle deficit a…
The functional renormalization group equation for projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is used to derive the non-perturbative beta functions for the Newton's constant, cosmological constant and anisotropy parameter. The resulting coupled differential equations are studied in detail and exemplary RG trajectories are constructed numerically. The beta functions possess a non-Gaussian fixed point and a one-parameter family of Gaussian fixed points. One of the Gaussian fixed points corresponds to the Einstein-Hilbert action with vanishing cosmological constant and constitutes a saddle point with one…
In this work, a minisuperspace model for the projectable Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity without the detailed balance condition is investigated. The Wheeler-deWitt equation is derived and its solutions are studied and discussed for some particular cases where, due to HL gravity, there is a "potential barrier" nearby $a=0$. For a vanishing cosmological constant, it is found a normalizable wave function of the universe. When the cosmological constant is non-vanishing, the WKB method is used to obtain solutions for the wave function of the universe. Using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, one discusses …
The destructive interference of the neighbouring field configurations with infinite classical action in the gravitational path integral approach serves as a dynamical mechanism resolving the black hole singularity problem. It also provides an isotropic and homogeneous early universe without the need of inflation. In this work, we elaborate on the finite action in the framework of Horava-Lifshitz gravity -- a ghost-free QFT. Assuming the mixmaster chaotic solutions in the projectable H-L theory, we show that the beginning of the universe is homogeneous and isotropic. Furthermore, we show that t…
