We report results of both the Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) and Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) methods on the potential energy curve of the helium dimer. We show that it is possible to obtain a highly accurate description of the helium dimer. An improved stochastic reconfiguration technique is employed to optimize the many-body wave function, which is the starting point for highly accurate simulations based on the Diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) and Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) methods. We find that the results of these methods are in excellent agreement with the best theoretical results at short range, especially the recently developed Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) method, yield particularly accurate results with reduced statistical error, which gives very excellent agreement across the whole potential curve. For the equilibrium internuclear distance of 5.6 bohr, the calculated total energy with Reptation Quantum Monte Carlo (RMC) method is -5.807483599$\pm$0.000000016 hartrees and the corresponding well depth is -11.003$\pm$0.005 K.
Dimers of tetracene molecules are formed inside helium nanodroplets and identified through covariance analysis of the emission directions of kinetic tetracene cations stemming from femtosecond laser-induced Coulomb explosion. Next, the dimers are aligned in either one or three dimensions under field-free conditions by a nonresonant, moderately intense laser pulse. The experimental angular covariance maps of the tetracene ions are compared to calculated covariance maps for seven different dimer conformations and found to be consistent with four of these. Additional measurements of the alignment…
Deuterated imidazole (IM) molecules, dimers and trimers formed in liquid helium nanodroplets are studied by the electrostatic beam deflection method. Monitoring the deflection profile of (IM)D+ provides a direct way to establish that it is the primary product of the ionization-induced fragmentation both of (IM)2 and (IM)3. The magnitude of the deflection determines the electric dipole moments of the parent clusters: nearly 9 D for the dimer and 14.5 D for the trimer. These very large dipole values confirm theoretical predictions and derive from a polar chain bonding arrangement of the heterocy…
Dimers of carbon disulfide (CS$_2$) molecules embedded in helium nanodroplets are aligned using a moderately intense, 160ps, non-resonant, circularly polarized laser pulse. It is shown that the intermolecular carbon-carbon (C-C) axis aligns along the axis perpendicular to the polarization plane of the alignment laser pulse. The degree of alignment, quantified by $\langle \cos^2(θ_\text{2D}) \rangle$, is determined from the emission directions of recoiling CS$_2$$^+$ fragment ions, created when an intense 40fs probe laser pulse doubly ionizes the dimers. Here, $θ_\text{2D}$ is the projection of…
Rubidium dimers residing on the surface of He nanodroplets are doubly ionized by an intense fs laser pulse leading to fragmentation into a pair of $\mathrm{Rb^+}$ ions. We show that the kinetic energy of the $\mathrm{Rb^+}$ fragment ions can be used to identify dimers formed in either the X $^1Σ_{\mathrm{g}}^+$ ground state or in the lowest-lying triplet state, a $^3Σ_{\mathrm{u}}^+$. From the experiment, we estimate the abundance ratio of dimers in the a and X states as a function of the mean droplet size and find values between 4:1 and 5:1. Our technique applies generally to dimers and trime…
We have deduced the structure of the \ce{bromobenzene}--\ce{I2} heterodimer and the \ce{(bromobenzene)2} homodimer inside helium droplets using a combination of laser-induced alignment, Coulomb explosion imaging, and three-dimensional ion imaging. The complexes were fixed in a variety of orientations in the laboratory frame, then in each case multiply ionized by an intense laser pulse. A three dimensional ion imaging detector, including a Timepix3 detector allowed us to measure the correlations between velocity vectors of different fragments and, in conjunction with classical simulations, work…
Dimers and trimers of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) molecules embedded in helium nanodroplets are aligned by a linearly polarized 160 ps long moderately intense laser pulse and Coulomb exploded with an intense 40 fs long probe pulse in order to determine their structures. For the dimer, recording of 2D images of OCS$^+$ and S$^+$ ions and covariance analysis of the emission directions of the ions allow us to conclude that the structure is a slipped-parallel shape similar to the structure found for gas phase dimers. For the trimer, the OCS$^+$ ion images and corresponding covariance maps reveal the pr…
We investigate the helium dimer in strong magnetic fields, focusing on the spectrum of low-lying electronic states and their dissociation curves, at the full configuration-interaction level of theory. To address the loss of cylindrical symmetry and angular momentum as a good quantum number for nontrivial angles between the bond axis and magnetic field, we introduce the almost quantized angular momentum (AQAM) and show that it provides useful information about states in arbitrary orientations. In general, strong magnetic fields dramatically rearrange the spectrum, with the orbital Zeeman effect…
Alkali metal dimers attached to the surface of helium nanodroplets are found to be efficiently doubly ionized by electron transfer-mediated decay (ETMD) when photoionizing the helium droplets. This process is evidenced by detecting in coincidence two energetic ions created by Coulomb explosion and one low-kinetic energy electron. The kinetic energy spectra of ions and electrons are reproduced by simple model calculations based on diatomic potential energy curves, and are in agreement with ab initio calculations for the He-Na_2 and He-KRb systems. This work demonstrates that ETMD is an importan…
We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study of Li$^+$ ions solvated by up to 50 He atoms. The experiments show clear enhanced abundances associated with He$_n$Li$^+$ clusters where $n=2$, 6, 8, and 14. We find that classical methods, e.g.\ Basin-Hopping (BH), give results that qualitatively agree with quantum mechanical methods such as path integral Monte Carlo, diffusion Monte Carlo and quantum free energy, regarding both energies and the solvation structures that are formed. The theory identifies particularly stable structures for $n=4$, 6 and 8 which line up with some of the …
In this work, we report potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the sodium dimer calculated by variational (VMC) and lattice regularized diffusion Monte Carlo (LRDMC). The VMC calculation is accurate for determining the equilibrium distance and the qualitative shape of the experimental PES. Remarkably, after the application of the LRDMC projection to this single determinant ansatz, namely the Jastrow Antisymmetrized Geminal Product (JAGP), chemical accuracy (~ 1kcal/mol) is reached, and the obtained dissociation energy, equilibrium internuclear distance, and harmonic vibrational frequency are in v…
The design of accurate helium-solute interaction potentials for the simulation of chemically complex molecules solvated in superfluid helium has long been a cumbersome task due to the rather weak but strongly anisotropic nature of the interactions. We show that this challenge can be met by using a combination of an effective pair potential for the He-He interactions and a flexible high-dimensional neural network potential (NNP) for describing the complex interaction between helium and the solute in a pairwise additive manner. This approach yields an excellent agreement with a mean absolute dev…
