We investigate the recurrence properties of the time series of quantum mechanical expectation values, in terms of two representative models for a single-mode radiation field interacting with a nonlinear medium. From recurrence-time distributions, return maps and recurrence plots, we conclude that the dynamics of appropriate observables pertaining to the field can vary from quasiperiodicity to hyperbolicity, depending on the extent of the nonlinearity and of the departure from coherence of the initial state of the field. We establish that, in a simple bipartite model in which the field is effectively an open quantum system, a decaying exponential recurrence-time distribution, characteristic of a hyperbolic dynamical system, is associated with chaotic temporal evolution as characterized by a positive Liapunov exponent.

In a novel approach to quantum dynamics, we apply the tools of recurrence network analysis to the dynamics of the quantum mechanical expectation values of observables. We construct and analyse $ε$-recurrence networks from the time-series data of the mean photon number in a model tripartite quantum system governed by a nonlinear Hamiltonian. The role played by the intensity-dependent field-atom coupling in the dynamics is investigated. Interesting features emerge as a function of a parameter characterising this intensity-dependent coupling in both the short-time and the long-time dynamics. In p…
In a tripartite system comprising a $Λ$-atom interacting with two radiation fields in the presence of field nonlinearities and an intensity-dependent field-atom coupling, striking features have been shown to occur in the dynamics of the mean photon number $\aver{N_{i}(t)}$ ($i = 1,\,2$) corresponding to either field. In this Letter, we carry out a detailed time-series analysis and establish an interesting correlation between the short-time and long-time dynamics of $\aver{N_{i}(t)}$. Lyapunov exponents, return maps, recurrence plots, recurrence-time statistics, as well as the clustering coeffi…
We show that in a one-dimensional translationally invariant tight binding chain, non-dispersing wave packets can in general be realized as Floquet eigenstates -- or linear combinations thereof -- using a spatially inhomogeneous drive, which can be as simple as modulation on a single site. The recurrence time of these wave packets (their "round trip" time) locks in at rational ratios $sT/r$ of the driving period $T$, where $s,r$ are co-prime integers. Wave packets of different $s/r$ can co-exist under the same drive, yet travel at different speeds. They retain their spatial compactness either i…
Periodically-driven systems are ubiquitous in science and technology. In quantum dynamics, even a small number of periodically-driven spins leads to complicated dynamics. Hence, it is of interest to understand what constraints such dynamics must satisfy. We derive a set of constraints for each number of cycles. For pure initial states, the observable being constrained is the recurrence probability. We use our constraints for detecting undesired coupling to unaccounted environments and drifts in the driving parameters. To illustrate the relevance of these results for modern quantum systems we d…
An expression of the Lindbladian form is proposed that ensures an unambiguous time-continuous reduction of the initial system-pointer wave-packet to one in which the readings and the observable's values are aligned, formalized as the transition from an outer product to an inner product of the system's and apparatus' density matrices. The jump operators are in the basis of the observables, with uniquely determined parameters derived from the measurement set-up (thereby differing from S. Weinberg's Lindbladian resolution of wave-packet formalism) and conforming to Born's probability rules. The n…
In chemical reactions, the interplay between coherent evolution and dissipation is central to determining key properties such as the rate and yield. Of particular interest are cases where two potential energy surfaces cross at features known as conical intersections (CIs), resulting in nonadiabatic dynamics that may promote ultrafast and highly efficient reactions when rovibrational damping is present. A prominent chemical reaction that involves a CI is the cis-trans isomerization reaction in rhodopsin, which is crucial to vision. CIs in real molecular systems are typically investigated via op…
The variance of an observable in a pre-selected quantum system, which is always real and non-negative, appears as an increase in the probe wave packet width in indirect measurements. Extending this framework to pre- and post-selected systems, we formulate a complex-valued counterpart of the variance called "weak variance." In our formulation, the real and imaginary parts of the weak variance appear as changes in the probe wave packet width in the vertical-horizontal and diagonal-antidiagonal directions, respectively, on the quadrature phase plane. Using an optical system, we experimentally dem…
One of the reasons for the tremendous success of a plane-wave approximation in particle physics is that the non-paraxial corrections to such observables as energy, magnetic moment, scattering cross section, and so on are attenuated as $λ_c^2/σ_{\perp}^2 \ll 1$ where $σ_{\perp}$ is a beam width and $λ_c = \hbar/mc$ is a Compton wavelength. This amounts to less than $10^{-14}$ for modern electron accelerators and less than $10^{-6}$ for electron microscopes. Here we show that these corrections are $|\ell|$ times enhanced for vortex particles with high orbital angular momenta $|\ell|\hbar$, which…
The Aharonov-Bohm effect is a fundamental topological phenomenon with a wide range of applications. It consists of a charge encircling a region with a magnetic flux in a superposition of wave packets having their relative phase affected by the flux. In this work, we analyze this effect using an entropic measure known as realism, originally introduced as a quantifier of a system's degree of reality and mathematically related to notions of global and local quantum coherence. More precisely, we look for observables that lead to gauge-invariant realism associated with the charge before it complete…
We extend our previous work on symplectic semiclassical Gaussian wave packet dynamics to incorporate electromagnetic interactions by including a vector potential. The main advantage of our formulation is that the equations of motion derived are naturally Hamiltonian. We obtain an asymptotic expansion of our equations in terms of $\hbar$ and show that our equations have $\mathcal{O}(\hbar)$ corrections to those presented by Zhou, whereas ours also recover the equations of Zhou in the case of a linear vector potential and quadratic scalar potential. One and two dimensional examples of a particle…
Chaos in classical systems has been studied in plenty over many years. Although the search for chaos in quantum systems has been an area of prominent research over the last few decades, the detailed analysis of many inherently chaotic quantum systems based on expectation values of dynamical variables has not been reported in the literature. In this paper, we extend the study of dynamical behaviour using expectation values of variables to a $q$-deformed harmonic oscillator. The system is found to be periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic depending on the values of the deformation parameter $q$ and…
The classical free-space solutions of Maxwell's equations for light propagation in one dimension include wave packets of any shape that travel at the speed of light. This includes highly-localised wave packets that remain localised at all times. Motivated by this observation, this paper builds on recent work by Southall et al. [J. Mod. Opt. 68, 647 (2021)] and shows that a local description of the quantised electromagnetic field, which supports such solutions and which must overcome several no-go theorems, is indeed possible. Starting from the assumption that the basic building blocks of photo…
We theoretically study an impulsively excited quantum bouncer (QB) - a particle bouncing off a surface in the presence of gravity. A pair of time-delayed pulsed excitations is shown to induce a wave-packet echo effect - a partial rephasing of the QB wave function appearing at twice the delay between pulses. In addition, an appropriately chosen observable [here, the population of the ground gravitational quantum state (GQS)] recorded as a function of the delay is shown to contain the transition frequencies between the GQSs, their populations, and partial phase information about the wave packet …

The semiclassically scaled time-dependent multi-particle Schrödinger equation describes, inter alia, quantum dynamics of nuclei in a molecule. It poses the combined computational challenges of high oscillations and high dimensions. This paper reviews and studies numerical approaches that are robust to the small semiclassical parameter. We present and analyse variationally evolving Gaussian wave packets, Hagedorn's semiclassical wave packets, continuous superpositions of both thawed and frozen Gaussians, and Wigner function approaches to the direct computation of expectation values of observabl…
