The velocity distribution of nearby stars contains many "moving groups" that are inconsistent with the standard assumption of an axisymmetric, time-independent, and steady-state Galaxy. We study the age and metallicity properties of the low-velocity moving groups based on the reconstruction of the local velocity distribution in Paper I of this series. We perform stringent, conservative hypothesis testing to establish for each of these moving groups whether it could conceivably consist of a coeval population of stars. We conclude that they do not: the moving groups are not trivially associated with their eponymous open clusters nor with any other inhomogeneous star formation event. Concerning a possible dynamical origin of the moving groups, we test whether any of the moving groups has a higher or lower metallicity than the background population of thin disk stars, as would generically be the case if the moving groups are associated with resonances of the bar or spiral structure. We find clear evidence that the Hyades moving group has higher than average metallicity and weak evidence that the Sirius moving group has lower than average metallicity, which could indicate that these two groups are related to the inner Lindblad resonance of the spiral structure. Further we find weak evidence that the Hercules moving group has higher than average metallicity, as would be the case if it is associated with the bar's outer Lindblad resonance. The Pleiades moving group shows no clear metallicity anomaly, arguing against a common dynamical origin for the Hyades and Pleiades groups. Overall, however, the moving groups are barely distinguishable from the background population of stars, raising the likelihood that the moving groups are associated with transient perturbations. We present a cross-calibration of Hipparcos and Gaia EDR3 intended to identify astrometrically accelerating stars and to fit orbits to stars with faint, massive companions. The resulting catalog, the EDR3 edition of the Hipparcos-Gaia Catalog of Accelerations (HGCA), provides three proper motions with calibrated uncertainties on the EDR3 reference frame: the Hipparcos proper motion, the Gaia EDR3 proper motion, and the long-term proper motion given by the difference in position between Hipparcos and Gaia EDR3. Our approach is similar to that for the Gaia DR2 edition of the HGCA, but offers a f…
We propose that fourteen co-moving groups of stars uncovered by Kounkel & Covey (2019) may be related to known nearby moving groups and bridge those and nearby open clusters with similar ages and space velocities. This indicates that known nearby moving groups may be spatially much more extended than previously though, and some of them might be parts of tidal tails around the cores of known open clusters, reminiscent of those recently found around the Hyades and a handful of other nearby clusters. For example, we find that both the nearby Carina and Columba associations may be linked to Theia …
Analysis of membership probability in nearby young moving groups with Gaia DR2
Gaia EDR3 offers greatly improved kinematics for nearby objects, including members of nearby young stellar moving groups (NYMGs). In this study, we aim to identify low-mass NYMG members (spectral types of M0 to mid-L) in Gaia EDR3. We calculated spatio-kinematic membership probabilities utilising a Bayesian membership probability calculation scheme developed in our previous study. We evaluated stellar youth primarily based on colour-magnitude diagram positions. Combining spatio-kinematic membership assessment and youth evaluation, we identified ~2900 low-mass NYMG candidate members including ~…
The formation of giant planets is best studied through direct imaging by observing planets both during and after formation. Giant planets are expected to form either by core accretion, which is typically associated with low initial entropy (cold-start models) or by gravitational instability, which corresponds to a high initial entropy of the gas (hot-start models). Thus, constraining the initial entropy provides insight into the planet formation mechanism and determines the resultant brightness evolution. We find that, by observing planets in nearby moving groups of known age both through dire…
We present the compilation of the Fifth Catalogue of Nearby Stars (CNS5), based on astrometric and photometric data from Gaia EDR3 and Hipparcos, and supplemented with parallaxes from ground-based astrometric surveys carried out in the infrared. The aim of the CNS5 is to provide the most complete sample of objects in the solar neighbourhood. For all known stars and brown dwarfs in the 25 pc sphere around the Sun, basic astrometric and photometric parameters are given. Furthermore, we provide the colour-magnitude diagram and various luminosity functions of the stellar content in the solar neigh…
We revisit the moving groups (MGs) in the solar neighborhood with a sample of 91969 nearby stars constructed from LAMOST DR7. Using the wavelet technique and Monte Carlo simulations, five MGs together with a new candidate located at $V \simeq$ -130 km s$^{-1}$ are detected simultaneously in $V-\sqrt{U^2+2V^2}$ space. Taking into account the other known MGs, we conclude that MGs in the Galactic disk are spaced by approximately 15 $\sim$ 25 km s$^{-1}$ along $V$ velocity. The origin of detected MGs is analysed through the distributions of [Fe/H]$-$[Mg/Fe] and ages. Our results support attributin…

Young nearby runaway stars are suitable to search for their place of origin and possibly associated objects, for example neutron stars. Tetzlaff, Neuhäuser & Hohle (2011) selected young ($\le 50$ Myr) runaway star candidates from Hipparcos, for which they had estimated the ages from the location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and evolutionary models. Here, we redetermine or constrain their young ages more precisely not only by using the new Gaia DR2 data, but also by measuring lithium, which is a youth indicator. For 308 stars, we took spectra to search for the strong resonance doublet of …
We present a search for new planetary-mass members of nearby young moving groups (YMGs) using astrometry for 694 T and Y dwarfs, including 447 objects with parallaxes, mostly produced by recent large parallax programs from UKIRT and Spitzer. Using the BANYAN $Σ$ and LACEwING algorithms, we identify 30 new candidate YMG members, with spectral types of T0$-$T9 and distances of $10-43$ pc. Some candidates have unusually red colors and/or faint absolute magnitudes compared to field dwarfs with similar spectral types, providing supporting evidence for their youth, including 4 early-T dwarfs. We est…

We analyze 5108 AFGKM stars with at least five high precision radial velocity points as well as Gaia and Hipparcos astrometric data utilizing a novel pipeline developed in previous work. We find 914 radial velocity signals with periods longer than 1000\,d. Around these signals, 167 cold giants and 68 other types of companions are identified by combined analyses of radial velocity, astrometry, and imaging data. Without correcting for detection bias, we estimate the minimum occurrence rate of the wide-orbit brown dwarfs to be 1.3\%, and find a significant brown dwarf valley around 40 $M_{\rm Jup…
