We consider the dynamics of a self-gravitating spinor field and a self-gravitating rotating perfect fluid. It is shown that both these matter distributions can induce a vortex field described by the curl 4-vector of a tetrad: $ω^i = \frac12\eps^{iklm}e_{(a)k}e^{(a)}_{l;m}$, where $e^{(a)}_k$ are components of the tetrad. The energy-momentum tensor $T_{ik}(ω)$ of this field has been found and shown to violate the strong and weak energy conditions which leads to possible formation of geometries with nontrivial topology like wormholes. The corresponding exact solutions to the equations of general relativity have been found. It is also shown that other vortex fields, e.g., the magnetic field, can also possess such properties.
From the principle of relativity with two universal invariant parameters $c$ and $l$, 24 possible kinematical (including geometrical and static) algebras can be obtained. Each algebra is of 10 dimensional, generating the symmetry of a 4 dimensional homogeneous space-time or a pure space. In addition to the ordinary Poincaré algebra, there is another Poincaré algebra among the 24 algebras. New 4d geometries with the new Poincaré symmetry are presented. The motion of free particles on one of the new space-times is discussed.
The notion of geometrical duality is discussed in the context of both Brans-Dicke theory and general relativity. It is shown that, in some particular solutions, the spacetime singularities that arise in usual Riemannian general relativity may be avoided in its dual representation (Weyl-type general relativity). This dual representation provides a singularity-free picture of the World that is physicaly equivalent to the canonical general relativistic one.
General relativity is reconsidered by starting from the unquestionable interpretation of special relativity, which (Klein 1910) is the theory of the invariants of the metric under the Poincaré group of collineations. This invariance property is physical and different from coordinate properties. Coordinates are physically empty (Kretschmann 1917) if not specified by physics, and one shall look for physics again through the invariance group of the metric. To find the invariance group for the metric, the Lie "Mitschleppen" is ideal for this task both in special and in general relativity. For a ge…
It is shown that the Chern-Simons functional, built in the spinor representation from the initial data on spacelike hypersurfaces, is invariant with respect to infinitesimal conformal rescalings if and only if the vacuum Einstein equations are satisfied. As a consequence, we show that in the phase space the Hamiltonian constraint of vacuum general relativity is the Poisson bracket of the imaginary part of this Chern-Simons functional and Misner's time (essentially the 3-volume). Hence the vacuum Hamiltonian constraint is the condition on the canonical variables that the imaginary part of the C…
The classical and continuum limit of a quantum gravitational setting could lead, at mesoscopic regimes, to a very different notion of geometry w.r.t. the pseudo-Riemannian one of special and general relativity. A possible way to characterize this modified space-time notion is by a momentum dependent metric, in such a way that particles with different energies could probe different spacetimes. Indeed, doubly special relativity theories, deforming the special relativistic kinematics while maintaining a relativity principle, have been understood within a geometrical context, by considering a curv…
New solutions of DHOST theories can be generated by applying a disformal tranformation to a known seed solution. We examine the nature of spherically symmetric solutions of DHOST gravity obtained by disforming static spherical scalar field solutions, or stealth solutions, of general relativity. It is shown that, in these cases, black hole horizons are never created by disforming a black hole seed. New DHOST solutions are then created by disforming two lesser known scalar field solutions of general relativity: Wyman's ``other'' solution and the Husain-Martinez-Nuñez one. These new solutions dem…
The paper 0705.0332v1 seeks to study the effect of non-trivial spatial curvature in homogeneous and isotropic models. We note that the space considered is not homogeneous, and that the equations of motion used are inconsistent with the metric. Also, we explain why the spatial curvature of homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes always evolves like 1/a^2, contrary to the central assumption of 0705.0332v1.
In a quantum gravity theory, spacetime at mesoscopic scales can acquire a novel structure very different from the classical concept of general relativity. A way to effectively characterize the quantum nature of spacetime is through a momentum dependent space-time metric. There is a vast literature showing that this geometry is related to deformed relativistic kinematics, which is precisely a way to capture residual effects of a quantum gravity theory. In this work, we study the notion of surface gravity in a momentum dependent Schwarzschild black hole geometry. We show that using the two main …
There are two mathematical relativity frameworks generalizing the black hole theory: the theory of isolated horizons (IH) and the theory of near horizon geometries (NHG). We outline here and discuss the derivation of the NHG from the theory of IH by composing spacetimes from IH. The simplest but still quite general class of solutions to Einstein's equations of this type defines spacetimes foliated by Killing horizons emanating from extremal horizons. That derivation, clearly being a link between the two frameworks, seems to be unknown to the NHG researchers and is hardly acknowledged in review…
In this work, we obtain isotropic extensions of the usual spherically symmetric vacuum geometries in general relativity. Exact and perturbative solutions are derived. The classes of geometries obtained include black holes in compact and noncompact universes, wormholes in the interior region of cosmological horizons, and anti-de Sitter geometries with excess/deficit solid angle. The tools developed here are applicable in more general contexts.
Third rank Killing tensors in (1+1)-dimensional geometries are investigated and classified. It is found that a necessary and sufficient condition for such a geometry to admit a third rank Killing tensor can always be formulated as a quadratic PDE, of order three or lower, in a Kahler type potential for the metric. This is in contrast to the case of first and second rank Killing tensors for which the integrability condition is a linear PDE. The motivation for studying higher rank Killing tensors in (1+1)-geometries, is the fact that exact solutions of the Einstein equations are often associated…
GR can be interpreted as a theory of evolving 3-geometries. A recent such formulation, the 3-space approach of Barbour, Foster and Ó Murchadha, also permits the construction of a limited number of other theories of evolving 3-geometries, including conformal gravity and strong gravity. In this paper, we use the 3-space approach to construct a 1-parameter family of theories which generalize strong gravity. The usual strong gravity is the strong-coupled limit of GR, which is appropriate near singularities and is one of very few regimes of GR which is amenable to quantization. Our new strong gravi…
We present here analytical solutions of General Relativity that describe evolving wormholes with a non-constant redshift function. We show that the matter that threads these wormholes is not necessarily exotic. Finally, we investigate some issues concerning WEC violation and human traversability in these time-dependent geometries.
The gravitational measure on an arbitrary topological three-manifold is constructed. The nontrivial dependence of the measure on the conformal factor is discussed. We show that only in the case of a compact manifold with boundary the measure acquires a nontrivial dependence on the conformal factor which is given by the Liouville action. A nontrivial Jacobian (the divergent part of it) generates the Einstein-Hilbert action. The Hartle-Hawking wave function of Universe is given in terms of the Liouville action. In the gaussian approximation to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation this result was earlier …
An approach to computing, withing the framework of distribution theory, the distributional valued energy-momentum tensor for the Schwarzschild spacetime is disscused. This approach avoids the problems associated with the regularization of singularities in the curvature tensors and shares common features with the by now standard treatment of discontinuities in General Relativity. Finally, the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime is also considered using the same approach.
The General Theory of Relativity has been an extremely successful theory, with a well established experimental footing, at least for weak gravitational fields. Its predictions range from the existence of black holes, gravitational radiation to the cosmological models, predicting a primordial beginning, namely the big-bang. All these solutions have been obtained by first considering a plausible distribution of matter, and through the Einstein field equation, the spacetime metric of the geometry is determined. However, one may solve the Einstein field equation in the reverse direction, namely, o…
A spacetime interpretation of deformed relativity symmetry groups was recently proposed by resorting to Finslerian geometries, seen as the outcome of a continuous limit endowed with first order corrections from the quantum gravity regime. In this work we further investigate such connection between deformed algebras and Finslerian geometries by showing that the Finsler geometries associated to the generalisation of the Poincaré group (the so called $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra) are maximally symmetric spacetimes which are also of the Berwald type: Finslerian spacetimes for which the connections ar…
The problem of deforming geometries is particularly important in the context of constructing new exact solutions of Einstein's equation. This issue often appears when extensions of the general relativity are treated, for instance in brane world scenarios. In this paper we investigate spacetimes in which the energy-momentum tensor obeys a linear constraint. Extensions of the usual vacuum and electrovacuum solutions of general relativity are derived and an exact solution is presented. The classes of geometries obtained include a wide variety of compact objects, among them black holes and wormhol…
We study the spontaneously induced general relativity (GR) from the scalar-tensor gravity. We demonstrate by numerical methods that a novel inner core can be connected to the Schwarzschild exterior with cosmological constants and any sectional curvature. Deriving an analytic core metric for a general exterior, we show that all the nontrivial features of the core, including the locally holographic entropy packing, are universal for the general exterior in static spacetimes. We also investigate whether the f(R) gravity can accommodate the nontrivial core.
Asymptotically locally AdS black hole geometries of dimension d > 2 are studied for nontrivial topologies of the transverse section. These geometries are static solutions of a set of theories labeled by an integer 0 < k < [(d-1)/2] which possess a unique globally AdS vacuum. The transverse sections of these solutions are d-2 surfaces of constant curvature, allowing for different topological configurations. The thermodynamic analysis of these solutions reveals that the presence of a negative cosmological constant is essential to ensure the existence of stable equilibrium states. In addition, it…
The causality properties of space-time models with traversable wormholes are considered. It is shown that relativity principle cannot be applied to the motion of the wormhole's mouths in the outer space and the dynamical wormhole transformation into the time machine is impossible. The examples of both causal and noncausal space-time models with traversable wormholes are also considered. Some properties of space-time models with causality violation are briefly discussed.
The conventional spacetime formulation of general relativity may be recast as a dynamics of spatial 3-geometries (geometrodynamics). Furthermore, geometrodynamics can be derived from first principles. I investigate two distinct sets of these: (i) Hojman, Kuchař and Teitelboim's, which presuppose that the spatial 3-geometries are embedded in spacetime. (ii) The 3-space approach of Barbour, Foster, Ó Murchadha and Anderson in which the spatial 3-geometries are presupposed but spacetime is not. I consider how the constituent postulates of the conventional approach to relativity emerge or are to b…
We construct thin-shell electrically charged wormholes in d-dimensional general relativity with a cosmological constant. The wormholes constructed can have different throat geometries, namely, spherical, planar and hyperbolic. Unlike the spherical geometry, the planar and hyperbolic geometries allow for different topologies and in addition can be interpreted as higher-dimensional domain walls or branes connecting two universes. In the construction we use the cut-and-paste procedure by joining together two identical vacuum spacetime solutions. Properties such as the null energy condition and ge…
General relativity can be presented in terms of other geometries besides Riemannian. In particular, teleparallel geometry (i.e., curvature vanishes) has some advantages, especially concerning energy-momentum localization and its ``translational gauge theory'' nature. The standard version is metric compatible, with torsion representing the gravitational ``force''. However there are many other possibilities. Here we focus on an interesting alternate extreme: curvature and torsion vanish but the nonmetricity $\nabla g$ does not---it carries the ``gravitational force''. This {\it symmetric telepar…
A lattice model for four dimensional Euclidean quantum general relativity is proposed for a simplicial spacetime. It is shown how this model can be expressed in terms of a sum over worldsheets of spin networks, and an interpretation of these worldsheets as spacetime geometries is given, based on the geometry defined by spin networks in canonical loop quantized GR. The spacetime geometry has a Planck scale discreteness which arises "naturally" from the discrete spectrum of spins of SU(2) representations (and not from the use of a spacetime lattice). The lattice model of the dynamics is a formal…
Probing the geometry of the universe is one of the most important endevours in cosmology. Current observational data from the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy (CMB), galaxy surveys and type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) strongly constrain the curvature of the universe to be close to zero for a universe dominated by a cosmological constant or dark energy with a constant equation of state. Here we investigate the role of cosmic priors on deriving these tight bounds on geometry, by considering a landscape motivated scenario with an oscillating curvature term. We perform a likelihood analysis of cu…
We explore General Relativity solutions with stealth scalar hair in general quadratic higher-order scalar-tensor theories. Adopting the assumption that the scalar field has a constant kinetic term, we derive in a fully covariant manner a set of conditions under which the Euler-Lagrange equations allow General Relativity solutions as exact solutions in the presence of a general matter component minimally coupled to gravity. The scalar field possesses a nontrivial profile, which can be obtained by integrating the condition of constant kinetic term for each metric solution. We demonstrate the con…
In the present work, a theoretical framework focussing on local geometric deformations is introduced in order to cope with the problem of how to join spacetimes with different geometries and physical properties. Using this framework, it is shown that two Lorentzian manifolds can be matched in agreement with the well-known Darmois-Israel junction conditions by locally deforming the associated spacetime metrics in relation to each other. Based on the insight that metrics can be suitably matched in this way, it is shown that the underlying geometric approach allows the characterization of local s…
General Relativity is contaminated with non-trivial geometries which generate closed timelike curves. These apparently violate causality, producing time-travel paradoxes. We shall briefly discuss these geometries and analyze some of their physical aspects.
We present an analysis of the classic wormhole geometries based on conformal Weyl gravity, rather than standard general relativity. The main characteristics of the resulting traversable wormholes remain the same as in the seminal study by Morris and Thorne, namely, that effective super-luminal motion is a viable consequence of the metric. Improving on previous work on the subject, we show that for particular choices of the shape and redshift functions the wormhole metric in the context of conformal gravity does not violate the main energy conditions at or near the wormhole throat. Some exotic …
An analysis of the work of Mira Fernandes on unitary theories is presented. First it is briefly mentioned the Portuguese scientific context of the 1920s. A short analysis of the extension of Riemann geometries to new generalized geometries with new affine connections, such as those of Weyl and Cartan, is given. Based on these new geometries, the unitary theories of the gravitational and electromagnetic fields, proposed by Weyl, Eddington, Einstein, and others are then explained. Finally, the book and one paper on connections and two papers on unitary theories, all written by Mira Fernandes, ar…
A quasi-local mass has been a long sought after quantity in general relativity. A recent candidate has been the Liu-Yau mass. One can show that the Liu-Yau mass of any two-surface is the maximum of the Brown-York energy for that two-surface. This means that it has significant disadvantages as a mass. It is much better interpreted as an energy and I will show one way of doing so. The Liu-Yau mass is especially interesting in spherical geometries, where mass and energy are indistinguishable. For a spherical two-surface, it equals the minimum of the amount of energy at rest that one needs to put …
In this paper we study Weyl fermions in a family of Gödel-type geometries in Einstein general relativity. We also consider that these solutions are embedded in a topological defect background. We solve the Weyl equation and find the energy eigenvalues and eigenspinors for all three cases of Gödel-type geometries where a topological defect is passing through them. We show that the presence of a topological in these geometries contributes to modification of the spectrum of energy. The energy zero modes for all three cases of the Gödel geometries are discussed.
In the context of the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR) we have investigated the role of local observers, associated with tetrad fields, in description of the gravitational interaction through the concepts of the gravitoelectric (GE) and gravitomagnetic (GM) fields. We start by analyzing the gravitoelectromagnetic (GEM) fields obtained from an observer freely falling in the Schwarzschild space-time. Then, we investigated whether it is possible to distinguish between this situation and to be at rest in the Minkowski space-time. We conclude that, although there are non-zero co…
We establish a correspondence between general relativity with diffeomorphism invariance and scalar field theories with Galilean invariance: notions such as the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemann tensor have a Galilean counterpart. This suggests Galilean theories as the unique nontrivial alternative to gauge theories (including general relativity). Moreover, it is shown that the requirement of first-order Palatini formalism uniquely determines the Galileon models with second-order field equations, similar to the Lovelock gravity theories. Possible extensions are discussed.
It is often argued that superluminal velocities and nontrivial spacetime topologies, allowed by the theory of relativity, may lead to causal paradoxes. By emphasizing that the notion of causality assumes the existence of a time arrow (TA) that points from the past to the future, the apparent paradoxes appear to be an artefact of the wrong tacit assumption that the relativistic coordinate TA coincides with the physical TA. The latter should be identified with the thermodynamic TA, which, by being absolute and irrotational, does not lead to paradoxes.
Near a spinning point particle in (2+1)-dimensional gravity (or near an infinitely thin, straight, spinning string in 3+1 dimensions) there is a region of space-time with closed timelike curves. Exact solutions for extended sources with apparently physically acceptable energy-momentum tensors, have produced the same exterior space-time structure. Here it is pointed out that in the case with torsion, closed timelike curves appear only for spin densities so high that the spin energy density is higher than the net effective energy density. In models without torsion, the presence of closed time-li…
The problem of collisions of shockwaves in gravity is well known and has been studied extensively in the literature. Recently, the interest in this area has been revived trough the anti-de-Sitter space/Conformal Field Theory correspondence (AdS/CFT) with the difference that in this case the background geometry is Anti de Sitter in five dimensions. In a recent project that we have completed in the context of AdS/CFT, we have gained insight in the problem of shockwaves and our goal in this work is to apply the technique we have developed there in the case of ordinary gravity. In the current proj…
We continue our investigation of the configuration space of general relativity begun in I (gr-qc/9411009). Here we examine the Hamiltonian constraint when the spatial geometry is momentarily static (MS). We show that MS configurations satisfy both the positive quasi-local mass (QLM) theorem and its converse. We derive an analytical expression for the spatial metric in the neighborhood of a generic singularity. The corresponding curvature singularity shows up in the traceless component of the Ricci tensor. We show that if the energy density of matter is monotonically decreasing, the geometry ca…
Certain exact solutions of the Einstein field equations over nonsimply-connected manifolds are reviewed. These solutions are spherically symmetric and have no curvature singularity. They provide a regularization of the standard Schwarzschild solution with a curvature singularity at the center. Spherically symmetric collapse of matter in $\mathbb{R}^4$ may result in these nonsingular black-hole solutions, if quantum-gravity effects allow for topology change near the center or if nontrivial topology is already present as a remnant from a quantum spacetime foam.
We find a family of exact solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations for rotating cylindrically symmetric distributions of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = wρ$ ($|w| < 1$), carrying a circular electric current in the angular direction. This current creates a magnetic field along the $z$ axis. Some of the solutions describe geometries resembling that of Melvin's static magnetic universe and contain a regular symmetry axis, while some others (in the case $w > 0$) describe traversable wormhole geometries which do not contain a symmetry axis. Unlike Melvin's solution, those with ro…

In this work, we construct traversable wormhole geometries in the context of f(R) modified theories of gravity. We impose that the matter threading the wormhole satisfies the energy conditions, so that it is the effective stress-energy tensor containing higher order curvature derivatives that is responsible for the null energy condition violation. Thus, the higher order curvature terms, interpreted as a gravitational fluid, sustain these non-standard wormhole geometries, fundamentally different from their counterparts in general relativity. In particular, by considering specific shape function…
A fundamental ingredient in wormhole physics is the presence of exotic matter, which involves the violation of the null energy condition. Although a plethora of wormhole solutions have been explored in the literature, it is useful to find geometries that minimize the usage of exotic matter. In the context of modified gravity, it has also been shown that the normal matter can be imposed to satisfy the null energy condition, and it is the higher order curvature terms, interpreted as a gravitational fluid, that sustain these non-standard wormhole geometries, fundamentally different from their cou…
In this work, we find novel static and spherically symmetric wormhole geometries using a three-form field. By solving the gravitational field equations, we find a variety of analytical and numerical solutions and show that it is possible for the matter fields threading the wormhole to satisfy the null and weak energy conditions throughout the spacetime, when the three-form field is present. In these cases, the form field is responsible for supporting the wormhole and all the exoticity is confined to it. Thus, the three-form curvature terms, which may be interpreted as a gravitational fluid, su…
We investigate static and spherically symmetric solutions in the Minimal Theory of Bigravity (MTBG). First, we show that a pair of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes with different cosmological constants and black hole masses written in the spatially-flat Gullstrand-Painlevé (GP) coordinates is a solution in the self-accelerating branch of MTBG, while it cannot be a solution in the normal branch. We then illustrate how Schwarzschild-de Sitter solutions can become compatible with the normal branch when using different coordinates. We also confirm that the self-accelerating branch of MTBG admits…
Global One--Dimensional Quantum General Relativity is the toy model with nontrivial field theoretical content, describing classical one-dimensional massive bosonic fields related to any 3+1 metric, where the dimension is a volume of three-dimensional embedding. In fact it constitutes the midisuperspatial Quantum Gravity model. We use one-particle density operator method in order to building macrostates thermodynamics related with any 3+1 metric. Taking the Boltzmann gas limit, which is given by the energy equipartition law for the Bose-Einstein gas of space quantum states generated from the Bo…
For a large class of space and time-dependent warped geometries we find the general solution of the 6-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet equations in the presence of p-form matter fields. This is done under two conditions on the matter sector which we show impose the integrability of the full system. Solutions are classified and known black hole limits are found. It is shown that Lovelock gravity restricts drastically the possible horizon geometries and allowed matter sources. In fact, we show that if we allow only for solutions of asymptotically flat falloff behaviour, and no fine-tuning of co…
