The problem of collisions of shockwaves in gravity is well known and has been studied extensively in the literature. Recently, the interest in this area has been revived trough the anti-de-Sitter space/Conformal Field Theory correspondence (AdS/CFT) with the difference that in this case the background geometry is Anti de Sitter in five dimensions. In a recent project that we have completed in the context of AdS/CFT, we have gained insight in the problem of shockwaves and our goal in this work is to apply the technique we have developed there in the case of ordinary gravity. In the current project, each of the shockwaves correspond to a point-like Stress-Energy tensor that moves with the speed of light while the collision is asymmetric and involves an impact parameter (b). Our method is to expand the metric $(g_{μν})$ in the background of flat space-time in the presence of the two shockwaves and compute corrections that satisfy causal boundary conditions taking into account back-reactions of the Stress-Energy tensor of the two point-like particles. Our solution respects causality as expected but this casual dependence takes place in an intuitive way. In particular, $g_{μν}$ at any given point $\vec{r}$ on the transverse plane at fixed $τ$ evolves according from whether the propagation from the center of each of the shockwaves or from both shockwaves has enough proper time ($τ$) to reach the point under consideration or not. Simultaneously around the center of each shockwave, the future metric develops a $δ$-function profile with radius $τ$; therefore this profile expands outwards from the centers (of the shockwaves) with the speed of light. Finally, we discuss the case of the zero impact parameter collision which results to the violation of conservation and we argue that this might be a signal for the formation of a black hole.
The dispersion relation of de Sitter special relativity is obtained in a simple and compact form, which is formally similar to the dispersion relation of ordinary special relativity. It is manifestly invariant under change of scale of mass, energy and momentum, and can thus be applied at any energy scale. When applied to the universe as a whole, the de Sitter special relativity is found to provide a natural scenario for the existence of an evolving cosmological term, and agrees in particular with the present-day observed value. It is furthermore consistent with a conformal cyclic view of the u…
In a quantum gravity theory, spacetime at mesoscopic scales can acquire a novel structure very different from the classical concept of general relativity. A way to effectively characterize the quantum nature of spacetime is through a momentum dependent space-time metric. There is a vast literature showing that this geometry is related to deformed relativistic kinematics, which is precisely a way to capture residual effects of a quantum gravity theory. In this work, we study the notion of surface gravity in a momentum dependent Schwarzschild black hole geometry. We show that using the two main …
We show that one can obtain asymptotic evolving boost-invariant geometries in a simple manner from the corresponding static solutions. We exhibit the procedure in the case of a supergravity dual of R-charged hydrodynamics by turning on a supergravity gauge field and analyze the relevant thermodynamics. Finally we consider turning on the dilaton and show that electric and magnetic modes in the plasma equilibrate before reaching asymptotic proper times.
In this work, we obtain isotropic extensions of the usual spherically symmetric vacuum geometries in general relativity. Exact and perturbative solutions are derived. The classes of geometries obtained include black holes in compact and noncompact universes, wormholes in the interior region of cosmological horizons, and anti-de Sitter geometries with excess/deficit solid angle. The tools developed here are applicable in more general contexts.
A spacetime interpretation of deformed relativity symmetry groups was recently proposed by resorting to Finslerian geometries, seen as the outcome of a continuous limit endowed with first order corrections from the quantum gravity regime. In this work we further investigate such connection between deformed algebras and Finslerian geometries by showing that the Finsler geometries associated to the generalisation of the Poincaré group (the so called $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra) are maximally symmetric spacetimes which are also of the Berwald type: Finslerian spacetimes for which the connections ar…
In this work, we explore the possibility of evolving (2+1) and (3+1)-dimensional wormhole spacetimes, conformally related to the respective static geometries, within the context of nonlinear electrodynamics. For the (3+1)-dimensional spacetime, it is found that the Einstein field equation imposes a contracting wormhole solution and the obedience of the weak energy condition. Nevertheless, in the presence of an electric field, the latter presents a singularity at the throat, however, for a pure magnetic field the solution is regular. For the (2+1)-dimensional case, it is also found that the phy…
The problem of deforming geometries is particularly important in the context of constructing new exact solutions of Einstein's equation. This issue often appears when extensions of the general relativity are treated, for instance in brane world scenarios. In this paper we investigate spacetimes in which the energy-momentum tensor obeys a linear constraint. Extensions of the usual vacuum and electrovacuum solutions of general relativity are derived and an exact solution is presented. The classes of geometries obtained include a wide variety of compact objects, among them black holes and wormhol…
We construct thin-shell electrically charged wormholes in d-dimensional general relativity with a cosmological constant. The wormholes constructed can have different throat geometries, namely, spherical, planar and hyperbolic. Unlike the spherical geometry, the planar and hyperbolic geometries allow for different topologies and in addition can be interpreted as higher-dimensional domain walls or branes connecting two universes. In the construction we use the cut-and-paste procedure by joining together two identical vacuum spacetime solutions. Properties such as the null energy condition and ge…
Collapsing shells form horizons, and when the curvature is small classical general relativity is believed to describe this process arbitrarily well. On the other hand, quantum information theory based (fuzzball/firewall) arguments suggest the existence of some structure at the black hole horizon. This structure can only form if classical general relativity stops being the correct description of the collapsing shell before it reaches the horizon size. We present strong evidence that classical general relativity can indeed break down prematurely, by explicitly computing the quantum tunneling amp…
We have proposed a novel shape function on which the metric that models traversable wormholes is dependent. Using this shape function, the energy conditions, equation of state and anisotropy parameter are analyzed in $f(R)$ gravity, $f(R,T)$ gravity and general relativity. Furthermore, the consequences obtained with respect to these theories are compared. In addition, the existence of wormhole geometries is investigated.
An analysis of the work of Mira Fernandes on unitary theories is presented. First it is briefly mentioned the Portuguese scientific context of the 1920s. A short analysis of the extension of Riemann geometries to new generalized geometries with new affine connections, such as those of Weyl and Cartan, is given. Based on these new geometries, the unitary theories of the gravitational and electromagnetic fields, proposed by Weyl, Eddington, Einstein, and others are then explained. Finally, the book and one paper on connections and two papers on unitary theories, all written by Mira Fernandes, ar…
Currently there exists no known way to construct the Stress-Energy Tensor $(T_{μν})$ of the produced medium in heavy ion collisions at strong coupling from purely theoretical grounds. In this paper, some steps are taken in that direction. In particular, the evolution of $T_{μν}$ at strong coupling and at high energies is being studied for early proper times $(τ)$. This is achieved in the context of the AdS/CFT duality by constructing the evolution of the dual geometry in an AdS$_5$ background. Improving the earlier works in the literature, the two incident nuclei have an impact parameter $b$ a…
We propose a field theory for the local metric in Stueckelberg--Horwitz--Piron (SHP) general relativity, a framework in which the evolution of classical four-dimensional (4D) worldlines $x^μ\left( τ\right)$ ($μ= 0,1,2,3 $) is parameterized by an external time $τ$. Combining insights from SHP electrodynamics and the ADM formalism in general relativity, we generalize the notion of a 4D spacetime $\mathcal{M}$ to a formal manifold $\mathcal{M}_5 = \mathcal{M} \times R$, representing an admixture of geometry (the diffeomorphism invariance of $\mathcal{M}$) and dynamics (the system evolution of $\m…
There is an intriguing analogy between the gravitational dynamics of the horizons and thermodynamics. In case of general relativity, as well as for a wider class of Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity, it is possible to interpret the field equations near any spherically symmetric horizon as a thermodynamic identity TdS = dE + PdV. We study this approach further and generalize the results to two more generic cases within the context of general relativity: (i) stationary axis-symmetric horizons and (ii) time dependent evolving horizons. In both the cases, the near horizon structure of Einstein …
The black-hole information paradox provides one of the sharpest foci for the conflict between quantum mechanics and general relativity and has become the proving-ground of would-be theories of quantum gravity. String theory has made significant progress in resolving this paradox, and has led to the fuzzball and microstate geometry programs. The core principle of these programs is that horizons and singularities only arise if one tries to describe gravity using a theory that has too few degrees of freedom to resolve the physics. String theory has sufficiently many degrees of freedom and this na…
The current interests in the universe motivate us to go beyond Einstein's General theory of relativity. One of the interesting proposals comes from a new class of teleparallel gravity named symmetric teleparallel gravity, i.e., $f(Q)$ gravity, where the non-metricity term $Q$ is accountable for fundamental interaction. These alternative modified theories of gravity's vital role are to deal with the recent interests and to present a realistic cosmological model. This manuscript's main objective is to study the traversable wormhole geometries in $f(Q)$ gravity. We construct the wormhole geometri…
In this work, we find novel static and spherically symmetric wormhole geometries using a three-form field. By solving the gravitational field equations, we find a variety of analytical and numerical solutions and show that it is possible for the matter fields threading the wormhole to satisfy the null and weak energy conditions throughout the spacetime, when the three-form field is present. In these cases, the form field is responsible for supporting the wormhole and all the exoticity is confined to it. Thus, the three-form curvature terms, which may be interpreted as a gravitational fluid, su…
The construction of a generic parametrization of spinning geometries which can be matched continuously to the Kerr metric is an important open problem in General Relativity. Its resolution is more than of academic interest, as it allows to parametrize and quantify possible deviations from the no-hair theorem. Various approaches to the problem have been proposed, all with their own (severe) limitations. Here we discuss the metric recently proposed by Johannsen and Psaltis, showing that (i) the original metric describes only corrections that preserve the horizon area-mass relation of nonspinning…
