In the future neutrino experiments, a beta-beam, which can produce pure electron neutrino beam, is expected to achive precise measurement of the neutrino oscillation parameters. In the $ν_μ$ appearance measurement of a beta-beam, a detector does not need to identify particle charge and thus, a water Cherecov detector will be a candidate for the far detector. In this paper, we study the expected signal detection efficiencies and background at the proposed beta beam facilities with the water Cherenkov detector. In the estimation, we use the current simulation and analysis tools developed for the Super-Kamiokande experiment. Depending on the beta beam setups, the signal detection efficiencies are found to vary from 36.4$%$ to 75.3$%$ in the standard $ν_μ$ search. The major source of background was found to be neutral current pion production, and the fraction of the background increases with the mean energy of the neutrino beam.
The main goals of the Absolute Luminosity For ATLAS (ALFA) detector is to provide an absolute luminosity and total cross section measurement. The measurement method used, the detector alignment and the quality of the collected data are discussed.
The ATLAS detector has been designed to have good muon momentum resolution up to momenta in the TeV range. The muon momentum resolution of the ATLAS spectrometer has been measured with p-p collision data recorded in 2011. The measurement combines the di-muon mass resolution in J/Ψ->μμand Z->μμdecays with measurements of the alignment accuracy of the detector based on straight muon tracks, which are acquired with special runs without magnetic field in the ATLAS detector.
We present a measurement of the electron neutrino charged-current inclusive cross section per nucleon with a data sample corresponding to 2.6E20 protons-on-target collected by NOvA near detector at Fermilab.
NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiment that is optimized for electron-neutrino appearance measurements. It uses the upgraded NuMI beam from Fermilab and consists of a Far Detector in Ash River, Minnesota and a Near Detector at Fermilab. An accurate prediction of the neutrino flux is key to both oscillation and cross-section measurements. The precisely known neutrino-electron elastic scattering cross section provides an in situ constraint on the absolute flux. This talk discusses the status of the measurement of the rate of neutrino-electron elastic scattering…
Based on test-beam measurements, we study the response of a liquid-scintillator detector equipped with wavelength-shifting optical modules, that are proposed e.g. for the IceCube experiment and the SHiP experiment, and adiabatic light guides that are viewed either by a photomultiplier tube or by an array of silicon photomultipliers. We report on the efficiency, the time resolution and the detector response to different particle types and point out potential ways to improve the detector performance.
Particle detectors based on liquid argon (LAr) have recently become recognized as an extremely attractive technology for the direct detection of dark matter as well as the measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS). The Chinese argon group at Institute of High Energy Physics has been studying the LAr detector technology and a LAr detector has been operating steadily. A program of using a dual phase LAr detector to measure the CE$ν$NS at Taishang Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed and the R\&D work is ongoing. Considering the requirements of ultra-low radio-purity …

Absolute normalisation of the LHC measurements with a precision of O(1%) is desirable but beyond the reach of the present LHC detectors. This series of papers proposes and evaluates a measurement method capable to achieve such a precision target. In our earlier paper we have selected the phase-space region where the lepton pair production cross section in pp collisions at the LHC can be controlled with < 1 % precision and is large enough to reach a comparable statistical accuracy of the absolute luminosity measurement on the day-by-day basis. In the present one the performance requirements for…
The Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment has measured the neutrino mixing angle θ_{13} to world-leading precision. The experiment uses eight antineutrino detectors filled with 20-tons of gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator to detect antineutrinos emitted from the Daya Bay nuclear power plant through the inverse beta decay reaction. The precision measurement of sin^{2}2θ_{13} relies on the relative antineutrino interaction rates between detectors at near (400 m) and far (roughly 1.8 km) distances from the nuclear reactors. The measured interaction rate in each detector is directly proportional…
The thermal properties of the LHCb Vertex Locator (VELO) are studied using the real-time detector alignment procedure. The variation of the position and orientation of the detector elements as a function of the operating temperature of the VELO is presented. This study uses a dataset collected by the LHCb experiment during a VELO temperature scan performed at the end of LHC Run 2 (October 2018). Significant shrinkage of the VELO modules is observed at the operating temperature of $-30^\circ$ compared to the laboratory measurements on a single module taken at a range of temperatures from $+45^\…
Detecting the X-ray radialization of pulsars and obtaining the photons' time of arrival are the foundation steps in autonomous navigation via X-ray pulsar measurement. The precision of a pulse' s time of arrival is mainly decided by the precision of photon arrival time. In this work, a silicon drift detector is used to measure photon energy and arrival time. The measurement system consists of a signal detector, a processing unit, a signal acquisition unit, and a data receiving unit. This system acquires the energy resolution and arrival time information of photons. In particular, when backgrou…
Systematic studies on the gain and the energy resolution have been carried out varying the voltage across the GEM foils for both single mask and double mask triple GEM detector prototypes. Variation of the gain and the energy resolution have also been measured varying either the drift voltage, transfer voltage and induction voltage keeping other voltages constant. The results of the systematic measurements has been presented.
A measurement has been made of the radiation damage incurred by the ATLAS Pixel Detector barrel silicon modules from the beginning of operations through the end of 2012. This translates to hadronic fluence received over the full period of operation at energies up to and including 8 TeV. The measurement is based on a per-module measurement of the silicon sensor leakage current. The results are presented as a function of integrated luminosity and compared to predictions by the Hamburg Model. This information can be used to predict limits on the lifetime of the Pixel Detector due to current, for …
The time-dependent gain variation of detectors incorporating Thick Gas Electron Multipliers (THGEM) electrodes was studied in the context of charging-up processes of the electrode's insulating surfaces. An experimental study was performed to examine model-simulation results of the aforementioned phenomena, under various experimental conditions. The results indicate that in a stable detector's environment, the gain stabilization process is mainly affected by the charging-up of the detector's insulating surfaces caused by the avalanche charges. The charging-up is a transient effect, occurring du…
Straw tube detectors are single wire proportional counters that are widely used as a tracking device. We have carried out R$\&$D with a straw tube detector prototype. The motivation of this work is to study the stability of the performance in terms of gain and energy resolution of the straw tube detectors under high rate radiation. Two different methods are incorporated to perform this study. The gain and energy resolution of the detector are studied along with its variation with ambient temperature and pressure. X-ray from a radioactive source is used to irradiate the detector and the same so…

In this paper we present a method of scintillation detector energy calibration using the gamma-rays. The technique is based on the Compton scattering of gamma-rays in a scintillation detector and subsequent photoelectric absorption of the scattered photon in the Ge-detector. The novelty of this method is that the source of gamma rays, the germanium and scintillation detectors are immediately arranged adjacent to each other. The method presents an effective solution for the detectors consisting of a low atomic number materials, when the ratio between Compton effect and photoelectric absorption …
Several different vertex detector designs for the Linear Collider Detector(LCD) are evaluated in the context of measurements of the branching ratio of the standard model Higgs particle decaying into charm/anti-charm final states. Fast Monte Carlo simulations are used to model the detector and neural network-optimized flavor tagging is used to perform the measurements. These tools are used to study the effects of pixel resolution, material thickness, and inner layer radius on the flavor tagging efficiency-purity curve and ultimately on the branching ratio measurement error.
New measurements are presented from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Minimum bias distributions are measured in distinct phase-space regions and compared with Monte Carlo model predictions. Activity in the underlying event is measured with respect to the track with the highest tranverse momentum in the event. Angular correlations between charged particles are studied to provide model-sensitive measurements.
We have measured the W-boson mass MW using data corresponding to 2.2/fb of integrated luminosity collected in proton-antiproton collisions at 1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This is the most precise measurement of the W-boson mass to date and significantly exceeds the precision of all previous measurements combined.

A new concept for the direct measurement of muons in air showers is presented. The concept is based on resistive plate chambers (RPCs), which can directly measure muons with very good space and time resolution. The muon detector is shielded by placing it under another detector able to absorb and measure the electromagnetic component of the showers such as a water-Cherenkov detector, commonly used in air shower arrays. The combination of the two detectors in a single, compact detector unit provides a unique measurement that opens rich possibilities in the study of air showers.

Using a large sample of pure, slow, short lived K0 mesons collected with KLOE detector at DaFne, we have measured the KS lifetime. From a fit to the proper time distribution we find tau = (89.562 +- 0.029_stat +- 0.043_syst) ps. This is the most precise measurement today in good agreement with the world average derived from previous measurements. We observe no dependence of the lifetime on the direction of the Ks.

This proceeding reports a study of the impacts of the SB2009 beam parameters on the Higgs recoil mass and Higgs-Strahlung cross-section measurements based on a dedicated fast simulation algorithm of the ILD detector. The study shows worse results from SB2009 beam parameters than the previous RDR beam parameters, because of the smaller luminosity. However, Travel Focus (TF) technology can recover the degradation to certain level.

The magnetized MINOS Near Detector, at a depth of 225 meters of water equivalent (mwe), is used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio. The ratio of observed positive to negative atmospheric muon rates, using 301 days of data, is measured to be 1.266+/-0.001(stat.)+0.015/-0.014(syst.). This measurement is consistent with previous results from other shallow underground detectors, and is 0.108+/-0.019(stat. + syst.) lower than the measurement at the functionally identical MINOS Far Detector at a depth of 2070 mwe. This increase in charge ratio as a function of depth is consistent with an i…

The systematic uncertainties associated to t…
Diboson cross sections have been measured for all combinations of W,Z and isolated photons, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The cross sections are measured in kinematic regions defined by the decay kinematics, in some cases including vetoes on additional jets. The measurements are also extrapolated to the full phase space using theoretical calculations of the acceptance, and are additionally used to place constraints on triple-gauge boson couplings.
A measurement is presented of the flux ratio of positive and negative muons from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, using data collected by the CMS detector at ground level and in the underground experimental cavern. The excellent performance of the CMS detector allowed detection of muons in the momentum range from 5GeV/c to 1TeV/c. For muon momenta below 100GeV/c the flux ratio is measured to be a constant 1.2766 +/-0.0032(stat.) +/-0.0032(syst.), the most precise measurement to date. At higher momenta an increase in the charge ratio is observed, in agreement with models of muon produ…
We present results from the first measurement of axial range components of fiducialized neutron induced nuclear recoil tracks using the DRIFT directional dark matter detector. Nuclear recoil events are fiducialized in the DRIFT experiment using temporal charge carrier separations between different species of anions in 30:10:1 Torr of CS$_2$:CF$_4$:O$_2$ gas mixture. For this measurement, neutron-induced nuclear recoil tracks were generated by exposing the detector to $^{252}$Cf source from different directions. Using these events, the sensitivity of the detector to the expected axial direction…

Measurements of the top-quark pole mass based on precision theoretical QCD calculations for lepton kinematic distribution and for top quark pair production with an additional jet are also presented.
NOvA is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. It uses the NuMI beam from Fermilab and two sampling calorimeter detectors placed off-axis from the beam. The 293 ton Near Detector measures the unoscillated neutrino energy spectrum, which can be used to predict the neutrino energy spectrum observed at the 14 kton Far Detector. The Near Detector also provides an excellent opportunity to measure neutrino interaction cross sections with high statistics, which will benefit current and future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. This analysis implements new algorithms to identify…
