Variational discretization and semi-smooth Newton methods; implementation, convergence and globalization in pde constrained optimization with control constraints
When combining the numerical concept of variational discretization and semi-smooth Newton methods for the numerical solution of pde constrained optimization with control constraints, special emphasis has to be taken on the implementation, convergence and globalization of the numerical algorithm. In the present work we address all these issues. In particular we prove fast local convergence of the algorithm and propose two different globalization strategies which are applicable in many practically relevant mathematical settings. We illustrate our analytical and algorithmical findings by numerical experiments.
We consider the integral definition of the fractional Laplacian and analyze a linear-quadratic optimal control problem for the so-called fractional heat equation; control constraints are also considered. We derive existence and uniqueness results, first order optimality conditions, and regularity estimates for the optimal variables. To discretize the state equation equation we propose a fully discrete scheme that relies on an implicit finite difference discretization in time combined with a piecewise linear finite element discretization in space. We derive stability results and a novel $L^2(0,…
Finite element approximations of Dirichlet boundary control problems governed by parabolic PDEs on convex polygonal domains are studied in this paper. The existence of a unique solution to optimal control problems is guaranteed based on very weak solution of the state equation and $L^2(0,T;L^2(Γ))$ as control space. For the numerical discretization of the state equation we use standard piecewise linear and continuous finite elements for the space discretization of the state, while a dG(0) scheme is used for time discretization. The Dirichlet boundary control is realized through a space-time $L…
The parallel solution of large scale non-linear programming problems, which arise for example from the discretization of non-linear partial differential equations, is a highly demanding task. Here, a novel solution strategy is presented, which is inherently parallel and globally convergent. Each global non-linear iteration step consists of asynchronous solutions of local non-linear programming problems followed by a global recombination step. The recombination step, which is the solution of a quadratic programming problem, is designed in a way such that it ensures global convergence. As it tur…
In this paper we investigate a priori error estimates for the space-time Galerkin finite element discretization of an optimal control problem governed by a simplified linear gradient enhanced damage model. The model equations are of a special structure as the state equation consists of an elliptic PDE which has to be fulfilled at almost all times coupled with an ODE that has to hold true in almost all points in space. The state equation is discretized by a piecewise constant discontinuous Galerkin method in time and usual conforming linear finite elements in space. For the discretization of th…
A majorized accelerated block coordinate descent (mABCD) method in Hilbert space is analyzed to solve a sparse PDE-constrained optimization problem via its dual. The finite element approximation method is investigated. The attractive $O(1/k^2)$ iteration complexity of {the mABCD} method for the dual objective function values can be achieved. Based on the convergence result, we prove the robustness with respect to the mesh size $h$ for the mABCD method by establishing that asymptotically the infinite dimensional ABCD method and finite dimensional discretizations have the same convergence proper…
We consider a linear-quadratic pde constrained optimal control problem on an evolving surface with pointwise state constraints. We reformulate the optimization problem on a fixed surface and approximate the reformulated problem by a discrete control problem based on a discretization of the state equation by linear finite elements in space and a discontinuous Galerkin scheme in time. We prove error bounds for control and state.
In this article, we derive a new, fast, and robust preconditioned iterative solution strategy for the all-at-once solution of optimal control problems with time-dependent PDEs as constraints, including the heat equation and the non-steady convection--diffusion equation. After applying an optimize-then-discretize approach, one is faced with continuous first-order optimality conditions consisting of a coupled system of PDEs. As opposed to most work in preconditioning the resulting discretized systems, where a (first-order accurate) backward Euler method is used for the discretization of the time…
These notes are issued from a short course given by the author in a summer school in Chamb{é}ry in June 2015. We consider general semilinear PDE's and we address the following two questions: 1) How to design an efficient feedback control locally stabilizing the equation asymptotically to 0? 2) How to construct such a stabilizing feedback from approximation schemes? To address these issues, we distinguish between parabolic and hyperbolic semilinear PDE's. By parabolic, we mean that the linear operator underlying the system generates an analytic semi-group. By hyperbolic, we mean that this opera…
In this paper we investigate a priori error estimates for the space-time Galerkin finite element discretization of a simplified semilinear gradient enhanced damage model. The model equations are of a special structure as the state equation consists of an elliptic PDE which has to be fulfilled at almost all times coupled with a non-smooth, semilinear ODE that has to hold true in almost all points in space. The system is discretized by a constant discontinuous Galerkin method in time and usual conforming linear finite elements in space. For the uncontrolled equation, we prove linear convergence …
Models incorporating uncertain inputs, such as random forces or material parameters, have been of increasing interest in PDE-constrained optimization. In this paper, we focus on the efficient numerical minimization of a convex and smooth tracking-type functional subject to a linear partial differential equation with random coefficients and box constraints. The approach we take is based on stochastic approximation where, in place of a true gradient, a stochastic gradient is chosen using one sample from a known probability distribution. Feasibility is maintained by performing a projection at eac…

PDE-constrained optimization problems find many applications in medical image analysis, for example, neuroimaging, cardiovascular imaging, and oncological imaging. We review related literature and give examples on the formulation, discretization, and numerical solution of PDE-constrained optimization problems for medical imaging. We discuss three examples. The first one is image registration. The second one is data assimilation for brain tumor patients, and the third one data assimilation in cardiovascular imaging. The image registration problem is a classical task in medical image analysis an…
We develop a theoretical foundation for the application of Nesterov's accelerated gradient descent method (AGD) to the approximation of solutions of a wide class of partial differential equations (PDEs). This is achieved by proving the existence of an invariant set and exponential convergence rates when its preconditioned version (PAGD) is applied to minimize locally Lipschitz smooth, strongly convex objective functionals. We introduce a second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) with a preconditioner built-in and show that PAGD is an explicit time-discretization of this ODE, which requ…
