In this article we consider the cycle structure of compositions of pairs of involutions in the symmetric group S_n chosen uniformly at random. These can be modeled as modified 2-regular graphs, giving rise to exponential generating functions. A composition of two random involutions in S_n typically has about n^(1/2) cycles, and the cycles are characteristically of length n^(1/2). Compositions of two random fixed-point-free involutions, on the other hand, typically have about log n cycles and are closely related to permutations with all cycle lengths even. The number of factorizations of a random permutation into two involutions appears to be asymptotically lognormally distributed, which we prove for a closely related probabilistic model. This study is motivated by the observation that the number of involutions in [n] is (n!)^(1/2) times a subexponential factor; more generally the number of permutations with all cycle lengths in a finite set S is n!^(1-1/m) times a subexponential factor, and the typical number of k-cycles is nearly n^(k/m)/k. Connections to pattern avoidance in involutions are also considered.
Motivated by a recent paper of Adin, Bagno and Roichman, we present an involution on Dyck paths that preserves the rise composition and interchanges the number of returns and the position of the first double fall.
An involution is a permutation that is its own inverse. Given a permutation $σ$ of $[n],$ let $\mathbf{N}_{n}(σ)$ denote the number of ways to write $σ$ as a product of two involutions of $[n].$ If we endow the symmetric groups $S_{n}$ with uniform probability measures, then the random variables ${\mathbf N}_{n}$ are asymptotically lognormal. The proof is based upon the observation that, for most permutations $σ$, $\mathbf{N}_{n}(σ)$ can be well approximated by $\mathbf{B}_{n}(σ),$ the product of the cycle lengths of $σ$. Asymptotic lognormality of $\mathbf{N}_{n}$ can therefore be deduced fro…
The involution walk is the random walk on $S_n$ generated by involutions with a binomially distributed with parameter $1-p$ number of $2$-cycles. This is a parallelization of the transposition walk. The involution walk is shown in this paper to mix for $\frac{1}{2} \leq p \leq 1$ fixed, $n$ sufficiently large in between $\log_{1/p}(n)$ steps and $\log_{2/(1+p)}(n)$ steps. The paper introduces a new technique for finding eigenvalues of random walks on the symmetric group generated by many conjugacy classes using the character polynomial for the characters of the representations of the symmetric…
In this paper we study the cycle descent statistic on permutations. Several involutions on permutations and derangements are constructed. Moreover, we construct a bijection between negative cycle descent permutations and Callan perfect matchings.
There are left and right actions of the 0-Hecke monoid of the affine symmetric group $\tilde{S}_n$ on involutions whose cycles are labeled periodically by nonnegative integers. Using these actions we construct two bijections, which are length-preserving in an appropriate sense, from the set of involutions in $\tilde{S}_n$ to the set of $\mathbb{N}$-weighted matchings in the $n$-element cycle graph. As an application, we compute a formula for the bivariate generating function counting the involutions in $\tilde S_n$ by length and absolute length. The 0-Hecke monoid of $\tilde{S}_n$ also acts on…
Any permutation polynomial is an $ n $-cycle permutation. When $n$ is a specific small positive integer, one can obtain efficient permutations, such as involutions, triple-cycle permutations and quadruple-cycle permutations. These permutations have important applications in cryptography and coding theory. Inspired by the AGW Criterion, we propose criteria for $ n $-cycle permutations, which mainly are of the form $ x^rh(x^s) $. We then propose unified constructing methods including recursive ways and a cyclotomic way for $ n $-cycle permutations of such form. We demonstrate our approaches by c…
Let $k$ be a nonnegative integer, and let $α$ and $β$ be two permutations of $n$ symbols. We say that $α$ and $β$ $k$-commute if $H(αβ, βα)=k$, where $H$ denotes the Hamming metric between permutations. In this paper, we consider the problem of finding the permutations that $k$-commute with a given permutation. Our main result is a characterization of permutations that $k$-commute with a given permutation $β$ in terms of blocks in cycles in the decomposition of $β$ as a product of disjoint cycles. Using this characterization, we provide formulas for the number of permutations that $k$-commute …
The distribution of descents in fixed conjugacy classes of $S_n$ has been studied, and it is shown that its moments have interesting properties. Fulman proved that the descent numbers of permutations in conjugacy classes with large cycles are asymptotically normal, and Kim proved that the descent numbers of fixed point free involutions are also asymptotically normal. In this paper, we generalize these results to prove a central limit theorem for descent numbers of permutations in any conjugacy class of $S_n$.
We use moment method to understand the cycle structure of the composition of independent invariant permutations. We prove that under a good control on fixed points and cycles of length 2, the limiting joint distribution of the number of small cycles is the same as in the uniform case i.e. for any positive integer k, the number of cycles of length k converges to the Poisson distribution with parameter 1/k and is asymptotically independent of the number of cycles of length k' different from k.
In this paper we study different restrictions imposed over the set of permutations of size $n$, $S_n$, and for specific classes of restrictions study the cycle structure of corresponding permutations. More specifically, we prove that for any fixed positive integer $k$, the number of $k$-cycles of a uniformly chosen permutation $π\in S_n$ with the restriction "$π(i) \geq i-1$" for $i \in \{2, \ldots, n\}$ has a Normal asymptotic distribution. We further prove that this result translates into CLTs regarding multiplicities of fixed-size parts of a uniformly selected composition of $n$.
The simple connected graphs may be classified by their cycle composition (number and lengths of cycles). This work derives the counting series of the simple connected graphs that have cycles of unrestricted number and length, but no overlapping cycles. Cycle pairs of these graphs of interest must not have common nodes or edges. The recipe of counting these graphs is based on the counting series of the associated planted graphs, multisets of planted graphs, a recursive synthesis of enriched trees, and a generalized Otter's formula that maps the underlying rooted block graphs to the underlying b…
Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field of order $q$, and $\mathbb P^1(\mathbb{F}_q) = \mathbb F_q\cup \{\infty\}$. Write $(x+\sqrt y)^m$ as $N(x,y)+D(x,y)\sqrt{y}$. For $m\in\mathbb N$ and $a \in \mathbb{F}_q$, the Rédei function $R_{m,a}\colon \mathbb P^1(\mathbb F_q) \to \mathbb P^1(\mathbb F_q)$ is defined by $N(x,a)/D(x,a)$ if $D(x,a)\neq 0$ and $x\neq\infty$, and $\infty$, otherwise. In this paper we give a complete characterization of all pairs $(m,n)\in\mathbb N^2$ such that the Rédei permutations $R_{m,a}$ and $R_{n,b}$ have the same cycle structure when $a$ and $b$ have the same quadr…
We show that J_n, the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the n-cycle, has a free resolution supported on the (n-3)-dimensional simplicial associahedron A_n. This resolution is not minimal for n > 5; in this case the Betti numbers of J_n are strictly smaller than the f-vector of A_n. We show that in fact the Betti numbers of J_n are in bijection with the number of standard Young tableaux of shape (d+1, 2, 1^{n-d-3}). This complements the fact that the number of (d-1)-dimensional faces of A_n are given by the number of standard Young tableaux of (super)shape (d+1, d+1, 1^{n-d-3}); a bijective proof of thi…
This paper introduces a new graph construction, the permutational power of a graph, whose adjacency matrix is obtained by the composition of a permutation matrix with the adjacency matrix of the graph. It is shown that this construction recovers the classical zig-zag product of graphs when the permutation is an involution, and it is in fact more general. We start by discussing necessary and sufficient conditions on the permutation and on the adjacency matrix of a graph to guarantee their composition to represent an adjacency matrix of a graph, then we focus our attention on the cases in which …
